A couple "Long Term" Suggestions for DayZ
nahholmes replied to nahholmes's topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
Also #7 - Server farming. Keep a short list of the last 8 or so places a player generated loot spawns. When a player generates loot the server first checks the list and if the loot spot already appears on the list 2 or more times the server generates crappy loot instead (tin cans, flares, bottles...). Save and load this list from main server with character data. The slightly increased load on the server is more than offset by not having hundreds of people log in/out 10 times an hour farming barracks. #8 - Maps Most people use online maps anyways which are superior to in game maps and have a 100% spawn rate. Increase the spawn rate of in game maps and let us all play more legit. In real life a map would be a really common find anyways compared to most loot. -
Is Balota usually camped?
nahholmes replied to despair (DayZ)'s topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
Everything changed when people started spawning with no weapons so it's hard to say. I'm sure a lot of people head to Balota now after spawning who used to go straight for cherno/elektro or into the woods. -

Shitty thread, shitty user. The great tale of TheLoneSurvivor.

I wish they would unban these kids just long enough to get one response to being banned then immediately ban them again. -
Soda Should count towards hunger (a little bit)
nahholmes replied to alexahr2008's topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
This. After you give blood they give you a soda and a cookie not a can of sardines after all. Some day soda should give maybe 100 blood and refill thirst about 1/2 as much as water. -
If you were a customer and demanded to be treated that way you know what the end result of that is right? The Alpha gets yanked out of public and put behind closed doors and you don't get to play it at all until it's ready. Maybe Beta if your lucky which could still be a long time away, but more likely it would be full release before you would be playing DayZ again. No company would ever publicly release an Alpha build to paying customers. If you want to be treated like a customer delete DayZ and don't play it until it's finished. We are lucky to be playing at this point and you just have to understand the only way to allow people to play the Alpha is for them to understand it's going to be broken every once in a while because it's a game still in progress. Don't get all entitled because you payed $30 for a full retail game + expansion pack and happened to get DayZ thrown in even if it is still in play test phase. Don't call on the guy who is creating the mod and try to pull rank on him like he owes you something. This behavior is exactly the reason if a company was officially running development you wouldn't be playing Alpha right now at all.

The zombies need to be more dangerous.
nahholmes replied to switch296's topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
There are 2 kinds of complainers on this forums. The ones who think the game is too hard all the time and will complain almost no matter what and the ones who think the game is too easy and will complain almost no matter what. There is A LOT of work left to do on this mod obviously. They will need to find the right balance of zombie LOS and hearing before they can even begin to truly address zombie AI and difficulty. Even then there are enough exploits to drive a truck through. Basically the players complaining the game it too easy/hard have one thing in common. They expect a game that tens of thousands of people are playing to be set to their personal difficulty level. Get over yourselves. Buggy zeds will get patched and broken and patched again only to be broken again. I don't see the wisdom in asking for buffs to AI when the way they detect players is fundamentally flawed. -

@OP I love how the 1% of kids that are "OMG 2 1337" for this game come on here and act like everyone is being a scrub and destroying their good time and they are somehow entitled to have this game we all enjoy made too difficult for anyone who doesn't have 1000's of hours to invest into being a super elite video game player. If you want someone to create a video game that only super godlike hardcore clan members could possibly enjoy I'd recommend you log off DayZ and pick up a book on programming, because not many people are going to spend almost all of their free time creating a game that immediately eliminates 99% of the player base. In the mean time log into a nighttime server, respawn, don't get help from your clan, and throw your flashlight into the ocean if you want a challenge. Give me a break. There are plenty of games out there with difficulty levels and learning curves that would make you cry (If you don't believe me I have a Super Street Fighter 2 Turbo arcade machine in my basement that is ready to prove you wrong). If you want a real challenge play competitive games with the big boys. You will never get a REAL challenge from AI zombies or casual bean countering players anyways if you are as boss at this game as you claim to be. But no games to challenge gamers you say? I could die laughing if it weren't so sad... -
Heartbeats! Are they broken?
nahholmes replied to Joyrider (DayZ)'s topic in DayZ Mod Troubleshooting
Not a fan of this feature. For all the people up in arms about any other suggestion that would make the game easier you guys sure did pick a bad one to get behind IMO. -
Who cares about spawn camping and bandits in this case, within a month all the All-Time top spots will be cheaters and exploiters. You can camp noobs all day that isn't going to get you on leader boards. Have you guys ever played a game with a leader board before? Very few are legit. With the mod the way it is, it's going to be impossible to be legit. Some kid with way too much time on his hands and 2 copies of Arma will script a bot to farm his 2nd account all day just to be #1 murderer on a leader board. As unbelievable as this may seem I won't be a bit shocked if in a month there are "alive" "players" with 1000+ kills or almost persistant online "alive" time or thousands of miles walked in a circle off the map in a server with 2 players on it. Online game players can be truly pathetic when there is an exploitable way to say "I'm the best". I don't think it will ruin the game because of the way the boards are set up (where it's easier just to never interact with real players to exploit to the top), but it will probably make the leader boards moot and it certainly won't add any value to the game. Stumped as to why this exists... I assure you right now there is someone with 20 cans of bean and 10 canteens running laps off the map while AFK.

Finally some people are trying to make the game fun
nahholmes replied to Hirox3's topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
"It's realistic" has become the rallying cry of the forums. Forget if an idea adds anything to the game, forget if an idea actually has any merit, forget technical limitations and the finite resource that is developer time. If it's realistic it's good and if it's not it's bad. That's what the forums seem to have boiled down to. Either that or people complaining they get shot too often (which is the other end of the spectrum). Seems like everyday the forum slides further down into the abyss. It's gotten so bad that someone is actually in this thread trying to tell us a zombie infection is possible to justify this ultra-realism talk. Luckily it seems like Rocket has plenty of his own ideas, so I'm not worried. If the community was actually listened to overall I would be in the process of looting cherno for toothpaste so I don't log back in with gingevitus because I drank a soda yesterday in game. -
Zombie Children YAY or NAY
nahholmes replied to AfricanizedBees's topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
Yeah because I don't already hear about DayZ in the news, oh wait... Regardless of how you feel personally about adding child zombies it will never happen. Dayz is not a normal mod, when's the last time a game mod was making the news? Also Rocket is not an idiot and he knows it would add nothing to the game and undo all his good favor in the media. Not to mention it's an election year where Repulicans are losing ground on traditional social conservative issues and can't call the president soft on terrorism. Don't tell me every politician wouldn't like to pick up that ball and run with it, the news medias darling game changed into a "child hunting simulator". Note: Not talking to you here just to rest of people who actually think this is a good idea... Get your head in the game guys, the world doesn't cease to exist at the end of your keyboards. Open the door, read a newspaper, take a walk, talk to someone not over VOIP. You guys are asking for something so idiotic that would detract a million things this mod has going for it and add nothing. You "DAYZ is now REAL LIFE and everything must be 100% realistic" guys have officially gone off the deep end. What's next? I can only imagine. If anyone fails to see why implementing this would be a terrible idea for the longevity of this mod you are officially losing touch with reality. -
Zombie Children YAY or NAY
nahholmes replied to AfricanizedBees's topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
How could anyone be dense enough to suggest or endorse this idea? #1: Starting off light, some people don't enjoy shooting children even if they are zombies in a video game. #2: Rocket would be shunned in the industry because... #3: ...Video games have long walked a fine line of narrowly avoiding being legislated (AKA having game devs' first amendment rights wholesale violated, see Australia) by self regulating (see ESRB which is largely just for show). Society draws a fine line at violence against children. Every time the censorship monster rears it's head it's because some idiot was playing Doom before he happened to kill some kids at his school (forget mentioning the 1000000 people who have played Doom and never killed anyone, they won't listen). If some 40y/o creep plays a game about killing child zombies then shoots up a school, it will likely be the last straw, and people know this. #4: It adds nothing to the game. It would be shocking the first couple of times then add nothing to the game for the next 1000 times you play it. #5: The mod changes from media darling "Oh isn't that cool, it's like a Walking Dead computer game." To "It's that disgusting game about killing children". Don't even try to explain they are zombies, the news media reported that the Norwegian mass murderer "trained in a shooting game called World of Warcraft." So congratulations WoW players you are now trained to shoot 100 people for no reason according to the media (and WoW is a shooter, coulda fooled me). Now imagine what happens when a game actually has you capping little kids... #6: The game instantly becomes illegal in several countries and instantly becomes AO rated if it sees solo release (which will kill sales). #7: Kids' parents will hear about Dayz in the news media and make their kids stop playing it (and likely any other shooting video games, these moral panics tend to come in waves). Many will stop buying any shooting games for their kids (or any M rated games). The effects of having an open world game where shooting any representation of a child is an option, much less an integral part of gameplay, has likely repercussions for an entire billion dollar industry. I could literally list 100 more reasons why this is the worst idea I've ever seen. I'm not even joking when I say you should be absolutely ashamed that you would share this mental shart with anyone. If I was project manager on a game, and someone opened their mouth with an idea that poorly thought out and they had thought about it long enough to write it down, I would seriously consider firing them on the spot... This will never ever EVER happen for a VERY GOOD reason. It would cast a shadow on the entire game industry. A sandbox game with shooting children? Why the hell would anyone ever consider that a good idea for a long enough time to actually post it, then people agree? You guys seriously need to get a grip on reality. I can't think of a quicker way for Rocket to completely destroy this entire project and his entire reputation. I hope he reads this thread as a reminder that most of the people on this forum don't have a blue's clue what is going on and that he should wash down all suggestions with a shaker full of salt... -
Why is there a leaderboard in this game? What purpose could that possibly serve except to encourage the worst in people who would gladly ruin the game for everyone just for some imaginary status? IMO it will quickly become a hall of shame as 99% of the people on there within a week will no longer be players just people exploiting/hiding/botting/ALT F4ing there way to the "top".

1.7.1.2: Dropping weapon drops ~60 hatchets + crashes server?
nahholmes replied to ThagaSa's topic in DayZ Mod Troubleshooting
You are the "basic functionality testing" this is an alpha TEST. Since this is a mod they probably lack a lot of the automated testing tools they would have to easily catch stuff like this normally. -
I could be wrong but I would assume you're not supposed to lose hunger/get thirst when you are logged out and this will be fixed at some point. Why would someone make a game where going on vacation or taking a break for exams = death?
-
...Wouldn't it make a little more sense if before you went around setting no guns on spawn and tweaking zed AI you fixed infinite ammo exploits, tweaked the food drops, fixed server hopping for gear, and fixed logging out to avoid death. You know, all the little things that people who complain the game is too easy tend to do without even thinking twice about it. Then they come on here and complain the game is too easy. I agree the game was too easy, but fix the most obviously unfair things about it before you go adjusting the difficulty level. Now I think it will just encourage more people to abuse ammo/DC/server hopping exploits.

Yes' date=' Our Lord works in mysterious ways. How dare these heretics question His plan. [/quote'] I think his response was the most reasonable so far actually. It's very fair to assume Rocket has a plan that accounts for some if not all of my concerns. At the same time million dollar studios full of devs fail all the time and NASA crashes rockets into Mars because someone forgot to convert feet to meters. I fail to see the wisdom of tweaking game difficulty based on player input in a game where exploits are actually unavoidable in normal game play. Doesn't mean there can't be a valid reason for doing things the way he does obviously, but I feel it was fair of me to voice my concerns in a short post given the mountains of completely useless crap he probably reads through daily on these forums.

Yes, thank you for the standard "know it all" forum reply. I'll be sure to dig up my old textbooks and cross out all the incorrect information and paste in a short paragraph explaining Alpha to members of a video game forum. Just for the record, what part of Alpha do I start soliciting gameplay input from a public internet forum? I will need to write that in as well. Alpha was likely explained as a way of saying "Don't come in here and complain about every little thing, we know the game has bugs, you may die or lose all your stuff for no reason, understand you are playing a game that is not fully developed and will change significantly and maybe without notice." I was pointing out many people exploit and these people exploiting changes the game for everyone (from difficulty to overall experience). I was trying to make my first post short and convey my point quickly, but the basic idea is the things I have listed will change the way the game is played when they are patched over FOR EVERYONE (Regardless if they were exploiting or not). People will die more, bullets will be more scare, many people will alter the way they play the game, more players will be spawning (as a result of dying more) = more active coastal region, risk/reward of farmed areas will completely change, ect... These issues are all things that are integral to the finished game and will need to be patched eventually no matter what direction the game goes in from here. My opinion was why not attempt to fix them now before you take a whole bunch of opinions on what direction the game should go in from people playing in an environment rampant with exploits? If Rocket wasn't taking player input (actively seeking it out) this wouldn't be as much of an issue and I wouldn't have even made this post, but he seems to be taking player opinions very seriously and IMO this input is all tainted by the current state of infinite ammo, server farming, ALT+F4, and all that jazz... Is that not a reasonable opinion to have/share on my part? If so why not?
