Are those the ones that require batteries? I've also noticed reflex dots only reflecting on some surfaces - they don't seem to like doors.

What is stopping the devs from upping the difficulty?

You've got a good point - I'd forgotten about the prevalence of ale back when miasma theory was all the rage. -

What is this, the bloody Sahara? I have literally never died from cholera and I've had it a few times in-game. It just means I put away my AK, take out my SVD, and stop sprinting around so much. Maybe spend a half-hour lazily looting residential spawns for sewing kits and other knick-knacks to hand out to the kids. I've had firefights while fighting of cholera, and it wasn't a big deal. Last time I caught it, I was drinking from a pond at very low health to recover from a firefight - half an hour of jogging around and drinking from wells and ponds, and we're good. There are a variety of natural water sources that are safer than 'infects you with a pathogen that has a 50% chance of killing you if you don't have antibiotics.' I doubt we'd have survived so long as a species otherwise. =/ -
Honestly, if they never officially release the game, that's fine by me - as long as they keep building on it! =)

I hear that hitting up NWAF after a server restart pretty much guarantees you an SVD. As for FALs, yeah, military, but fairly rare.

Personally, I'd rather let them focus on whatever they feel is best first.

nl had it right: it's all about testing. Alpha testing used to be so tedious they paid people to do it; I think we can all adapt to little things like this. -
What location comes to mind when you think of DayZ?
Funkmaster Rick replied to Tatanko's topic in General Discussion
Green Mountain is probably the first to come to mind for any long-time player. We all remember the radio broadcast, and the ghost stories. Vyshnoye is another good callout from the old-time players. These days I see more people living more Westward to stay in contact with the military bases, but Zub castle and environs were a sort of home for many groups, and I still know the terrain like the back of my hand. That castle was important strategic ground back when snipers could hit 2km shots with the right rifles and a little patience. Stary Sobor in particular will always be remembered fondly as a place of utter destruction and mayhem; it served as a central hub to most of the North, had some interesting terrain and varied cover, and a good spread of loot locations - but no hospital to cower in while approaching enemies respawned the medical gear, so you knew you'd have good fights. Berezino, Elektrozavodsk, and Chernogorsk were fucking crazy. You never knew what you'd find if you chose to stick around there. Most of the hero-vs-bandit wars took place there, the bandits murdering and then the heroes eventually being called in on global chat. Frequently you'd run across lone and lightly geared survivors - sometimes a fight would ensue, sometimes a friend would be made, but often betrayal was involved. I've met some of the least trustworthy and some of the most trustworthy DayZ players in those cities. But home? For me, home will always be Kamenka, away from the action, plenty of civilian loot, and a mixture of major roadways for newbie navigation, hilly forest for a covered retreat, and now the option of fishing, some military bases within easy reach, and prison island to swim to when I get really fucking bored. I probably spend most of my time around the Zeleno-NWAF-Stary triangle since that seems to be where most of the action is, but Kamenka is home. EDIT: Oh, let's not forget Balota. LOTS of crazy fights at Balota. -
Look! Up in the sky! It's a bird... it's a plane... no, it's Boris from Marketing's reanimated corpse, soaring gracefully with the crows and the eagles, about to bag himself a bambi.

Logging out with a weapon in your hands is a bad move lately. Can confirm from experience.

Mookie: even if they can see what you're doing, flanking while leaving a base of fire still forces them to split their attention, which gives you an opening. OP: why does everyone feel the need to advertise their YouTube channels here?

Tried 0.60 after a long time away from DayZ
Funkmaster Rick replied to Evilsausage's topic in General Discussion
For what it's worth, PvP streamers are the second lowest social class within DayZ, in my books. The trolls are worse. You know, the guys for whom shooting you and looting your corpse isn't enough - the ones who consistently fuck with their victims, or try to humiliate them. At least the PvP streamers kill you quickly when they can. -
That's one issue I frequently notice when running with groups: a lack of fucking discipline and awareness. As soon as they're running with others, they start spending more time making sure they're hugging ass than actually scouting, and the mere mention of potentially desirable loot turns everyone's brains off. I can't even begin to count the number of times I've been running with a group of skilled players and had the entire group wipe because of really, really poor decision-making. It lends credence to the old saying about people being smart, but groups being stupid. =/

The Melee combat....Worst shit i have seen in any game.
Funkmaster Rick replied to Evilsausage's topic in General Discussion
As far as I'm aware, it's not a placeholder. It's my understanding that Hicks has declared it Essentially Done. We might get lucky and get some better animations for it with the new avatar controller, and these animations might make melee more predictable, but at the moment we might as well be running around with no pants and a fire extinguisher when it comes to hand-to-hand combat. -
Instantly became hyperthermic and I can't cool off..?
Funkmaster Rick replied to Ransurias's topic in New Player Discussion
When you start heating up, take your hat off and try to sprint in shadows instead of sunlight. I literally have no problems whatsoever with temperature management using this strategy. -
I'm constantly reminded of this issue when I see a company that sells gaming monitors advertising said monitors. Instant-swap gamma settings and other such things are advertised as acceptable advantages, with the implication being that you'd be a scrub not to buy the screen that lets you see better in the dark.

Not all. For example, I play regularly on the UN 1pp hive - server 1 works as intended, server 2 has the issue with indicators. I think on servers without indicators, you're also not actually affected by bleeding, starvation, etc. You also appear not to be able to recover from going unconscious. Haven't tested it well, though.

I'm putting a fresh tray of fries in the oven and could use your help with the seasoning. =p But yeah, literally. Water nearly everywhere. Just, not necessarily a well. I know, it sounds nit-picky, but with the cholera mechanics it's actually a somewhat important distinction.

0.60 settings optimization or tool?
Funkmaster Rick replied to NewPlayer80's topic in General Discussion
Go to you documents/DayZ folder, open YourName.vars.DayZProfile, then scroll down to the bottom. Mess around with the following settings to achieve solid results: sceneComplexity, shadowZDistance, viewDistance, preferredObjectViewDistance I play with a GTX 560 without too much trouble on medium settings, just had to find the right balance on those four things. -
Severe fps drom when driving vehicles
Funkmaster Rick replied to BlinkingRiki182's topic in General Discussion
I've been told that driving V3S's near other vehicles causes unbearable, computer-is-running-on-diesel stutter-lag. Maybe this hearkens back to when putting two persistence items on the same plane of existence would cause a divide-by-zero singularity? -
Tisy and the military compound to its West, Topolniki, Krasnoye, Ratnoye, Polesovo, Zaprudnoe, Novaya Petrovka, Chernaya Polana, Dobroye, Berezhki, Vavilovo, Sosnovka, Drozhino, Progorodki, Pusta, Msta, Shakhovka, Orlovets, Karmanovka, and Dubrovka. Pretty sure that's all of them. Your point still stands, however. Many of these cities are within a five-minute run of a well (not thirty seconds, but close enough), and upwards of 95% of the map has some manner of water nearby, even if it means drinking from the dirty ass-puddle with a handful of dead bodies rotting in it near the school building in Novaya Petrovka, but let's not forget that unless you have the healthy status already, you risk cholera at any non-well location, so hitting bright green for a post-fight cure job isn't always as easy as it used to be. Cholera can still be man-moded through with a bit of food and a steady source of water, and a good puke and some charcoal can largely eliminate it, but it's a bit of a pain in the ass. OP should definitely fire his travel planner - you've got to move from water to water when running across Cherno.
-
If you're heating up while loot-sprinting, take your hat off and try to run in shadowy forests slightly more often. I have found that in nearly all cases this completely eliminates the problem, but that's just my experience.

This isn't an open discussion on some of the most frequently walked ground in DayZ debate, it's an advertisement for your YouTube account.

How do some of you justify this game?!
Funkmaster Rick replied to JudoCobra's topic in General Discussion
Kinda funny how every single change to the loot mechanics has brought about at least one thread explaining how the game is killing itself with a rusty spoon. I lol'd. This thread is slightly more interesting in that the OP is trying to shame the developers into reconsidering. I mean, it's still silly, but at least it's something different. And for what it's worth, loot scarcity is good. I played back when there was an abundance of loot. The deathmatching was worse. Bambies died in droves, and all the CoD kiddies had a gay ol' time.
