Watch out for this stream sniper and confessed hacker...
Funkmaster Rick replied to floomoo's topic in General Discussion
I've entertained, for a while now, the notion that most KoS bandits are actually just assholes. It's a difficult notion to prove or disprove, as asking them directly isn't always a reliable source of information. On top of that, there are a lot of legitimate reasons to kill everyone you see immediately - after all, one you've lost your gear to KoS bandits enough (and been shot in the back by supposed friendlies), you start to adapt to your environment, and you learn that assuming the worst of everyone you meet is generally the safest policy. You can only live with psychopaths so long before you start adopting their traits as a sort of survival mechanism. Stream sniping is a bit of a different angle on the same thing: clearly, they only play to kill you, but the voyeuristic aspect of it is a bit important, I think; with a normal DayZ kill, the whole thing is done once their body hits the ground. You check them for anything useful, of course, and you can mostly assume they're running their freshspawned ass right back to where they died in the vain hope of fulfilling some kind of revenge/dominance fetish. With stream sniping, they get to live a more substantial power fantasy: they've not only killed you, taken your stuff, ruined your fun, but now they get to bring down a room's worth of viewers. Most importantly, they get to observe first-hand whatever frustration and anger they cause. I can sort of imagine two streamers (or just a friend who knows the streamer) playing out a bit of a prank war via stream sniping, but that's about the only scenario I can picture in which the stream sniper is not actively practising sadism. All I have left to say is thank goodness these people have the internet and video games to work their problems out on, because I don't think they could handle real life without those outlets, and our prison systems are already overtaxed. -
About the new .60 performance comparison
Funkmaster Rick replied to Ironhuge's topic in General Discussion
Man. Next to vehicle introduction, the new renderer has been pretty much the most anticipated update to the SA. And now that we're finally getting close, a significant portion of the regular posters on this forum can't move past "Psh, yeah, but what else are you doing?" I am rapidly losing faith in the vocal portion of this community. -
Have you ever done port forwarding on your router?

Zombie outbreak at BI offices is delaying game updates. The local military has severed their communications to prevent worldwide panic. Trust me, I'm a funkmaster, I know all about these things.

Wheels having a persistence issue
Funkmaster Rick replied to emuthreat's topic in General Discussion
If I had to guess, which I do because I'm bored, I'd say Mother Nature is actively trying to reclaim her wheels. Clearly, placing any man-made object between the wheel and her loamy grasp is enough to discourage her, so tent floors are a go. Maybe she needs new wheels inside the Earth to keep rotating it. -
Please update me on single player mod progress
Funkmaster Rick replied to Ugly (DayZ)'s topic in General Discussion
There is no news at the moment. Personally, I would not expect to hear anything at all on that front for at least another year given the things currently being worked on. -
Discussion: Would the community at large hound the Devs less if did more low key interactions on the forums?
Funkmaster Rick replied to narchy's topic in General Discussion
For what it's worth, I personally agree with this statement; I kind of expect to find everything here, given that it's a forum hosted at the expense of the devs and which has the sole purpose of providing the DayZ community with a place to communicate. Not many have the time or inclination to hunt and peck for news. This in particular strikes me as something of a common oversight among game companies these days. Nobody needs Twitter exclusives but Twitter. -
Man, you have to understand. Kamenka has been a nowhere shithole that only bambis and I go to since, like, summer 2012. It's the ultimate hipster hangout in Chernarus. It's also a great place to stash things since nobody goes there. Plus, two gas pumps and a grocery nearby - you can't underestimate that. I have a feeling I could turn it into a premier cozy little resort town. EDIT: And then I re-read your post and understood, because I'm clearly thick and need to do things twice so I don't derp it.
-
I skipped all the responses after this, so if my point has been made, I apologize for the repetition. If you can't travel around Chernarus in a shitmobile with a couple of dozen loaded AKs in the trunk just ready and waiting to equip a posse of conscripted 12-year-olds to hunt down bandits and secure cities, I think I might want my money back. I have a dream, and that dream is shenanigans in large quantities.

If they allow you to purchase NPCs to guard your camp, will I be able to pimp them out for ammunition and fuel? Can I run a post-apocalyptic bordello in downtown Kamenka?

Discussion: Would the community at large hound the Devs less if did more low key interactions on the forums?
Funkmaster Rick replied to narchy's topic in General Discussion
I think a fairly large minority of the forum-going population would be appeased by having more direct, small-scale interactions with the developers. After all, while us players are expected to playtest and provide feedback for Early Access, I think there's an implied expectation that the developers will respond directly to this feedback - after all, nobody wants to be shouting at the void. -
Dude where's my car? Where's your car dude? Is it just me, or does anyone else feel the missed opportunity?

Do i need extra content to play Dayz?
Funkmaster Rick replied to Zero Nero's topic in New Player Discussion
You do not need additional DLC to play the DayZ mod, though some servers might use the DLC content if they expand upon the mod or have a lot of scripting. It's probably easiest to buy ArmA 2: OA on Steam, but buy wherever it's cheapest. DayZ mod itself is free, and I believe there are still occasional updates - Dean Hall dropped development of the mod when he teamed up with BI for the Standalone version of the game, which is what most everyone is talking about on these forums. The Standalone is far from complete at the moment, but you may want to watch some videos on YouTube and whatnot, as the Standalone has more long-term potential as a game (in my opinion) and thus may be a better investment. It's also worth checking out a mod called DayZero, for ArmA 3, which I've heard is good fun, and very much like the DayZ mod for ArmA 2. They're not affiliated (as far as I know) with the SA or DayZ mod teams, but it comes with the added advantage of having ArmA 3, which looks quite good.- 1 reply

[Opinion] The Value of Base Building?
Funkmaster Rick replied to [DGN] Johnny's topic in General Discussion
The value of base building is roughly equal to the amount of protection it affords you and your stuff. When one considers how easy it currently is to see tents and barrels from distance, I'd say that base building would actually result in a negative value. Needs more useful foliage, the kind you can't turn off in your game settings. EDIT: Upon consideration, base building also has some meagre value as a fun activity in and of itself. One thing I failed to consider is that a base, in a lot of ways, represents a community, which can definitely be its own hefty reward - assuming it doesn't attract too many DayZ psychopaths. =3 -
Kicking from Vilayer server IS ALLOWED.

With respect, none of what you said addresses the actual argument I made, the one where I essentially said you can't count a lack of evidence as proof. I'm afraid that's just plain bad logic. I don't particularly care to look back on other threads on this subject since I wasn't part of those threads, had no hand in the arguments, and basically just don't recognize them as authoritative on the topic. Sorry mate, but the only arguments you're making are ad hominem. Wielding the tenuous presence of two years' worth of threads on this topic does not necessarily make you more informed, only more involved. If someone told me they knew all the ins and outs of dating because they'd read two years' worth of a Cosmo subscription, I would continue to reserve judgement. As to your third point, it's chaff, man. I could probably come up with clever, well-considered answers to all those questions, but none of them are related the core argument I put forth, which is "A lack of evidence does not constitute proof." As to implying I'm a wanderer gawking as I walk by, insisting "It can't possibly be that bad," that's not what I said, mate. I said that a lack of evidence does not constitute proof. For the record, the statements "I am an adult," and "Your loss people," as used in your post appear to be highly contradictory. Just sayin', man. -
Oh, you can bet your ass there are players going through there. Nobody I've run with in DayZ hasn't already known about that lootzone. Anytime I loot it, I've got a good chance of hitting all the ground-level spawns before anyone shows up, but there have been many times I've run across unexpected survivors. With the way the base is laid out, you really can't see outside of it to the North and South all that well without being on that edge of the base. To the West there's a bit of a trench before you hit the hill - the top of that hill can be a bit of a pain in the ass to navigate, but it gives you some truly beautiful angles for scouting and covering the base. The Eastern hill offers fewer really great shooter angles but a safer retreat. I think the biggest issue with looting or living near the Myshkino tent cluster is that it definitely attracts somewhat more experienced players; it's not near the coast, not right next to the NWAF, and makes a somewhat terrible place for hiding your camp given that it's a huge military loot zone. Most of the players you encounter there will probably have some idea what they're doing. People heading straight to NWAF, via the milbase near Pavlovo, will often detour through the tent cluster, and you can expect them to already have at least a pistol from their earlier adventures. That being said, I've put bases in that general area and seen them untouched for weeks at a time, so who knows.

Kicking from Vilayer server IS ALLOWED.
Funkmaster Rick replied to deevote's topic in General Discussion
Not finding a complaint doesn't prove anything, man. A lack of evidence only counts as evidence itself in books and movies. Honestly, think about this: if you're breaking the rules, get caught, get punished, are you really going to started complaining loudly about it all over the internet? "Hey, my name's Jackass McGee, and I'm terribly upset that Company X won't let me continue being a giant dickwad. What a controversy this amounts to! We should boycott their shenanigans!" I had more fun typing out that sentence than it warrants. But in any case, my point stands: it would essentially be someone complaining about their own faults and trying to make it seem like someone else caused it. Lack of evidence proves nothing, alas. =/ -
Personally, what I look for most in a server (aside from 1pp only) is community. I want to feel like there might be more to do on a server than just loot, scoot, and shoot. Sometimes that means events, sometimes it means RP, but mostly it means a way of sharing experiences. If you want to push your server to the max, the best you can do is make sure all the support systems are in place - namely, have a subreddit or forum for your server. Find out who the regulars on your server are, and try to interact with them publicly on the aforementioned subreddit or forum. In general, show people that your server has personality. Good luck.

Player stats shouldn't show players killed
Funkmaster Rick replied to WilliamTheConqueror's topic in General Discussion
This to the max. -
You say pointless, but when I feel all sociable and some nub asks me for a weapon "to help protect the group," I'ma give him the one with a six-foot rise at 200m.

Enough with the guns already....
Funkmaster Rick replied to Zurvivalist's topic in General Discussion
As strongly as I favour open communication, the first time someone reports that they "...wrote a thousand lines of code yesterday, then spent all of today fixing syntax typos in yesterday's code," someone with a personality disorder and too much free time is going to come here and be Upset On The Internet (patent pending) and call for his job to be axed. Too much detail will draw attention to discontinuity in a system some inexperienced people believe must be consistent. -

Anyone who actually wants to track their kills is perfectly capable of doing so with pencil-and-paper technology. Removing the kill counter would punish them.
