    New Derringer Shown!

Yup - that was the major influence on my design :) I'm thinking about a couple of colors - a chromed one, this black one and maybe a hello kitty one :p

    The Repeater

Its 357mag...already shoots in game. Just waiting for the animations/sounds to be made.
  3. This is precisely our current plan for the same reasons you just stated. The blase has something like divots in its barrel which allows for attachment of a saddle mount - a type of mount which cannot be used on any other of our guns. That means the only way to satisfy the 'realism' junkies is to create a specific Blaze scope which can't be used on any other weapon. Alternatively we introduce a generic 'scope' and then make people find the exact mount they need to attach to a given rifle and craft them together, which is a lot more work involving both the art and design team and has the end result of making it easier for there to be more leet snip0rs killing other players at long range - something we're not interested in encouraging at the moment. Its not something we'll permanently ignore - its just not a high priority right now.
  4. My personal opinion: one could argue that dayz takes place after the last events on the timeline relating to A2/OA, since it would seem odd that there is no mention anywhere among the campaigns or ANN reports of a society-crushing virus, which would put dayz in late 2013 at the earliest. AND I tend to view dayz as a parallel universe since I feel like having to incorporate a zombie apocalypse between the time of A2 and A3 feels a bit...cheese for the otherwise serious-feeling ArmA3.

    Silencers? Where are they?

suppressors were strategically withdrawn from the loot tables pending support for their function.

    New CDF Gear Confirmed?

Yep, I was thinking about the MASKA helmet, SMERSH vest, and balaclava when I said that. Flack jacket is another thing I've thought of but we have to see how to handle it first. I'm holding SVD until we get a working version of central loot since it would quickly become 'that gun every leet sniper wants'. Peter and I agree that sniper rifles are of the devil and need to be quite rare. We'll probably add an MMG like PKM for mounting on vehicles when the time comes.

    Fingerless Gloves/hobo gloves

Funny we were just talking about this last week. Actually started planning it out as a feature but actually we remembered there's one problem. Some of you might remember when, if you wore gloves, and you were playing as a black person, your arms would turn white. We'd actually have the same problem with fingerless gloves at the moment - the fingers would always be white, so we'd need to get some programmer and designer time before we can pull it off the right way.

Status Report: Week of 04 August 14

N-nothing. :) Actually its because I'm visiting a remote studio we started working with and didn't write anything up for this week but we're going to update the status report probably today with new info.
  9. Still, most of the complaints I'm reading in this discussion boil down to the lack of wounding effects, not necessarily the lethality of the M4 (which I maintain, is not a one-shot stopper). We definitely want wounding effects.
  10. I started going through the guns and polishing things up a bit. The pistols, in particular, seem to have have a silly amount of dispersion. I was missing zombies with well aimed shots at ~25m. I calculated the MOA for one of the pistols to be ~300. About the M4 damage - current values were recommended by Gews. Feedback from Iraq and A-stan indicate that the average number of hits it took to instantly incapacitate an enemy was 7 from the M4. Hell if I can find the article now but yeah...I'm sure it could one-shot drop a woodchuck. Here's an article filled with quotes and anecdotes about the evolution of .223 into the 77gr bullets they are today and how they're performing in the field. Not the report I saw before but you'll get the idea. And keep in mind that most soldiers are issued the 62gr rounds. You can't want both realism and 1-shot drops from an M4. http://www.americanthinker.com/2004/08/the_last_big_lie_of_vietnam_ki.html
  11. Its almost like...the rifle is a work in progress and isn't ready to be released to experimental yet :) Caliber is changing. Art was told to make this in 5.56mm by design, but that was before design moved all 5.56 to crashsites so we decided this week to rebarrel the 527 in 7.62x39 and might later add a full-length 527 varmint in 5.56 sometime in the future. Sounds are being made atm, along with new reload animations.

.380 ACP Coming To DayZ! [Torchia Reddit]

You're exactly right - IMO that's precisely what we've done - we added a new, real life caliber, enhancing gameplay. People don't have to 100% agree with the rationale or the particular selected caliber. It was a comprimise so by definition, it means neither side got exactly what it wanted. Its massively pedantic at this point to say this somehow caters to the COD crowd and its gamey or whatever other nonsense. We added a real world caliber to go with real world weapons we just didn't pick the specific caliber some people wanted. To me that's a matter of simple preference, rather than principle. For those still harping on the 7.62 issue edit, I meant this:

.380 ACP Coming To DayZ! [Torchia Reddit]

Right it has to do with game design. To make it easier to understand which guns take which ammo we wanted a way to more easily distinguish them. Having 7.62x39, 7.62x51, and 7.62x54 sounds like nonsense to the average player. Likewise 9x17, 9x18, and 9x19...only a few people know the difference between them and which guns take which. If the stated design goal allows for a slight expansion of calibers but making sure they can be easily discriminated, then a compromise is to add 380Auto (9x17) since this is the same 'class' of ammo as 9mmM, and most guns which are chambered in 9mmM have a variant in 380Auto anyways. It remains authentic (not 100% realistic, I can agree, but authentic) and makes it easier for an average player to tell the difference in the ammo, plus it dilutes the ammo pool having the gameplay effect people are talking about. The only downside is the slight hit to 'realism' in our made-up zombie-infested game universe.

.380 ACP Coming To DayZ! [Torchia Reddit]

Just a general FYI: We're not against adding more calibers but the team feels strongly we should avoid confusion of casual players. This means we can achieve the same effect on gameplay that dilution of the ammo pool would accomplish without adding in more 7.62s, and more 9mm's. 380Auto has performance characteristics more similar to the 9mmM than 9mmP but has several advantages 1) avoids confusion 2) allow for the addition of many iconic firearms such as Makarov, RAK, PPK, MAC10, Scorpion 3) sets a precedent which might allow us to do the same with 7.62 (think .308 Win instead of 7.62x51).

    [SA]WeaponZ Survey

Tell me the KIND of weapon in each category you'd most like to see in the survey at the below link: http://goo.gl/ZzyHeH To be clear, this doesn't mean the others won't be considered but I'm just trying to get an idea of the MOST wanted of all teh things. You can pick more than one.

    [SA]WeaponZ Survey

Thanks everyone - I got tons of responses from this poll (almost 10,000!) and the community preferences for each category were are all very clear to me. I have thought about sharing these data but I see mostly drawbacks with this - the only benefit being to satisfy people's curiosity. Let me explain - There are a small number of weapons either in planning phase, in development, or finished, awaiting animations/configging. However, according to the results of the poll, while the items in progress are items the wider community has demonstrated it does want, it does not want them most of all. I was surprised, for example, to find (and I'll use this example since the double barrel shotgun has been made public) that people had a 2:1 preference for a pump action shotgun over the double barrel (full size and sawed off). However, at this point it is unreasonable to drop everything we're doing or have planned for the double barrel shotty and start working again on the Remington 870 (we have already shown one in progress at Gamescom, if I'm not mistaken). Therefore, I'm afraid that if I do release the results and it does not appear that we are implementing the exact wishes in the same timetable suggested by the results of the poll, people will become resentful. On the other hand, if we do adopt a 'govern-by-poll' style, so to speak, we are exposing the development of our project to the 'whims of men', in keeping with the analogy. Therefore, the results of the poll have given me a clear understanding of the direction the community would like to move but it may be some time (weeks/months) before we can allow these data to influence our decisions. Perhaps I'll post the results publicly at that time.

    [SA]WeaponZ Survey

Closing in on 3k responses! I could probably close the the poll here since the results are quite clear but I guess its better to let as many as possible voice their opinions... I'll probably share the results but with some caveats explained later on.

    [SA]WeaponZ Survey

We want to have a wide variety of guns eventually - to spread out the chances of finding a specific item. However, we have to prioritize in the short term, so I'm curious to hear from you guys.

    BUIS for weapons with optics

Its actually a bug, not a placeholder. The attachment system works via proxies placed on the M4 base model. The engine is supposed to render the LOD of the proxy mesh which corresponds to the observed LOD in game (i.e. if you're in 1st person view, the 1st person proxy mesh should render for you). This wasn't happening at the time the video was made and the engine was rendering one of the 3rd person LODs (lower poly to save on performance for others). Dean told me just yesterday, this bug was fixed. As for BUIS - yes we are planning on making BUIS for the M4 (actually I have both a MaTech and MBUIS high poly models from previous projects already made so its just a matter of me making something game-ready and then letting Dean and Jirka see what they can conjure up with them). edit: oh and regarding cowitness...its not necessary in the game. Actually the way the game works means the rear sight aperture is just eyecandy. IRL the rear sight tells you 'you're perpendicular to the front post' but you're forced to have perfect perpendicularity in-game because you don't have 6-DOF when aiming. Your aimpoint can turn off but it really won't have an impact on your aim in game :P Of course, for eye candy purposes, I think it should be there...but in practice, it wouldn't surprise me if people go rear aperture-less to maintain greater situational awareness.

    More antiquated yet effective weapons.

That's partly what I meant by saying we can substitute specific 'things' with specific 'types of things' For example, the substitution of VZ58 for AKs since they are similar rifles filling a similar role (I know they function differently internally but that has no real impact on gameplay). In this way, the setting appears to be more Russian, despite it actually being inspired a bit more by the Czech Republic. As for the small selection available in A2, I think you would agree that for the sake of making an entire spin off game, DayZ needs to put a bit more thought into the setting than the A2 team had to. For the scope of that campaign, a pretext for war in "generic eastern European country" was sufficient - and anyways, the back story reminds me of what would become a real life flashpoint in the western-phillic Republic of Georgia. I hope the fans will agree that we are not stretching too far.

    More antiquated yet effective weapons.

Mauser is already made but won't be in the initial release of SA. There will be assault rifles. As for the Mosin... Shhh...don't tell anybody I showed you these ;) http://puu.sh/3huFD http://puu.sh/3hvKz http://puu.sh/3hvrD The Chernarus of DayZ is a fictitious creation that’s "generic country with significant Russian influence in its past" that more recently has had a great influence from the West. Its not unlike Czech Republic in that regard and so when myself and Ivan Buchta (our ambassador to Chernarus) created the wish lists of weapons, gear, and player clothing, it was done with that in mind. I even went so far as to gather gun ownership statistics in CR, which, incidentally, has some of the most accommodating gun laws for civilian ownership in Europe. What I found was that CR is ranked in the top third of gun owners per capita. There's approximately 300k registered gun owners who own ~700k firearms between them. This doesn't include those with illegal guns and you can bet there are a fair number of those too. This contained the greatest variety and can include anything from AR15s to civilianized AKs (such as Vepr), Glocks, Desert Eagles...pretty much anything you can think of can be found in the country. Next is the police - there's ~42k police officers in the CR and they seem to use both western and eastern weapons. I've found pics of SWAT-style units in Prague with MP5k and MP5s, Glocks, Benelli shotguns, and an assortment of CZ pistols, SMGs, and rifles (of course). Last comes military and there's ~23k soldiers. These guys use anything from your assorted CZ arms like the police, as well as M4 variants, M60s, MP5SDs, SVDs, OP96s, some tricked out Sako rifles, etc... and I think this type of model (although we can embellish the selection of specific things with specific ‘types of things’) is a good one to follow. So I'm looking at these stats and I read comments on the forum and I wonder "do people think DayZ is set during the Cold War era". Then I would understand why most guns need to be Eastern-ish, historic peculiarities. But if DayZ is set in the present day (or slight future), then it’s totally appropriate to have an eclectic mixture of things. There will be some older, historic firearms from the East, like the Mosin, and some newer ones from the West, like a customizable M4. If I recall, the weapon list is ~50% "eastern stuff" so its not exactly a Russian gun enthusiasts wet dream but I hope that which was chosen will appeal to a broad range of people.
  25. There will be accurate slow firing rifles with scopes...if you want to call that a sniper rifle.
