When you first spawn in, it tells you what town or city you're close to. If you missed that, the sun always goes West to East, so you can easily find North/South. Once you have an idea of North, look for landmarks, pay attention to the topography of the area, road signs, powerlines and train tracks. After awhile, you'll just know where you are.. :)

Oooh, how do I apply for closed testing? I've been an alpha/beta tester since QTF days! Take. Your. Time.. we will still be here. ;)

Crowbars can only be used for melee and take up your pistol/sidearm slot in the inventory, Hatchets can be used for melee as well as to collect wood for fires, but they take up the Primary weapon slot. (altho they can be stored on the toolbelt when not being used for melee, and you can still use it to gather wood) A pistol will fit in the starter pack(Coyote patrol - 8 slots) with 2 slots left. Be careful though, if you have more than 2 clips for it, you'll drop them or they will disappear. A primary weapon takes 10 slots, but you should wait until you have at least a Czech (16 slots) or Alice (20 slots) pack to be safe. (Primary weapons will simply disappear if you try to put it in the starter pack) Again, be careful not to have more clips than slots, or you could end up losing the weapon. http://dayzwiki.com/wiki/index.php?title=Weapons http://dayzwiki.com/wiki/index.php?title=Backpack

Come join up with the Ghost Response Team. It's a new group that basically takes new players and shows them the ropes, provides medical assistance, and a bunch of other cool stuff. We're a friendly group with the goal of helping people learn what not to do. Once you've learned some things, you can decide to help more new people yourself so the cycle can continue. It's sad that people aren't willing to be a little more tolerant of others in this game, but it just makes those friendly players that you do run into that much more rewarding and memorable. I encourage you to check us out: http://dayzgrt.enjin.com/ tl;dr don't quit, get better at playing and group up with some people you can trust! :)

No thanks.. maybe an axe or a crowbar at the most, but even that is unneeded. Just spawn. find nearest barn. Profit. Trust me, I was against removing the starter weapons when I heard it was going to happen, but then I gave it a chance and decided I was fine with it.

This thread is awesome! :) Don't read it at night though.. you'll get the creeps for sure!

[How To] ArmA 2: CO + Steam Tracking and Overlay with Beta Patch
cyanyde replied to xcryonic's topic in New Player Discussion
Why am I getting the "Warning, Illegal copies may degrade" message after copying the beta patch in? Please tell me that I didn't trigger the "FADE" copy protection. D: -
warning: illegal copies may degrade?
cyanyde replied to FadedReality's topic in DayZ Mod Troubleshooting
I was wondering about this as well, I have been getting this message since replacing the arma2oe.exe with the beta version. My game is bought on Steam and perfectly legit, does the message mean your copy is degrading? Because if so, I'm kind of annoyed that I'm suffering for using an official beta patch. :/ -
Storage question: Dropped/Packs vs Tents
cyanyde replied to deviantdigi's topic in New Player Discussion
If it was that close to any town, it would be found for sure. It's still a good idea, but I was picturing going way out in the wilderness and dropping the pack where it would be somewhat safer. Either way, it all depends on the answer to the despawning question. -
If they let zeds run around in buildings, I sure hope they slow them down by just a little.. it's terrifying how close behind they can get.. almost impossible to shoot them when zig-zagging and stuff. Going inside feels kind of cheap, I'll admit, but it's the only option currently.

Storage question: Dropped/Packs vs Tents
cyanyde replied to deviantdigi's topic in New Player Discussion
I've though of doing that before, but I'm not sure of how long they stay etc.. I know tents are designed to stick around, but it's possible that the packs would stick around. Problem is, you can only carry one pack at a time, so you would be packless until you found another.. you can't even put a smaller pack in a bigger pack, which would be cool as well. -
I'm pretty much always shot at on site. If the first shot doesn't kill me, I immediately go prone and try to locate my assailant. Most of the time, they either log out, or I get shot. Sometimes I shoot them, but I don't want to.. Other times I've met a random player in one of the coastal towns, and they're telling me not to shoot and that they're friendly, sometimes they even need a blood transfusion, and of course, I give it to them.. guess what, only once has a player actually thanked me and gone on his way. I've played for a month, and every single time I try to help someone, I get killed for it. Anyway tl;dr I'm friendly, but extreeeeemely paranoid. D:

Out of bounds item/vehicles cleanup [2012-07-06]
cyanyde replied to Ander (DayZ)'s topic in Mod Announcements & Info
Ugh. to start with, posts like NuclearBanane's post makes me want to rage.. I would like it if the Dayz map was a bit bigger too, but at the risk of sounding like a troll, I have to say that the way some of the people on this forum tend to approach issues, is retarded. Reading the thread from start to finish is like watching a perfectly normal society descend into chaos.. it's cool, but not cool enough. Anyway, to the op/dev.. thank you for fixing the issue of hoarding assests outside the map. As for making the map bigger, I agree. While the map is big enough for the majority of the community, there are times when it would be nice to have something like the debug forest to just make a basecamp and chill.. How about adding to the map? Is that possible? I mean we already used to spawn outside of the current boundries before it was fixed, so it's obviously possible within the confines of the engine.. why not just add some miltary tents and crap outside the current boundries of Charnarus and call it the "outskirts" or wilderness or whatever? Also, wh1t3y brought up a good point which wasn't addressed.. "..just to clarify "respawn" as in start fresh, will need repairing, or will spawn back where it was fixed with all the items it had when it was out of bounds, seems a silly question maybe but im curious" I'm curious too.. I'm sure they would need repairing based on my knowledge of game engines, but it would kind of be cool if it was the other way. I know in the old sp mod for this mod, it wasn't possible to spawn a fully fixed vehicle, but how is it handled in this case? Anyway, awesome fix and great timing.. but is it final, or will we eventually be linked to other maps as mentioned in the pcg review.. cuz that would be amaaaaazing! :) -
With so many exploits I cant have a private server DB?...or Single Player?
cyanyde replied to TragicEnd's topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
Zombies aren't scary, they're window dressing. The true fear in this game is other players. It doesn't matter if they're friendly or not.. when you hear that gunshot, or hear another player moving around in the building you're in, the adrenaline starts pumping and your heart starts pounding. That's what this game is all about.. The emotional investment that you make into your character is amazing, and unlike any other game. ever. If people are dying to zombies, then they're doing it wrong.. I completely understand what coolboy is saying, and I too hope that number includes spawn spamming. ;P -
With so many exploits I cant have a private server DB?...or Single Player?
cyanyde replied to TragicEnd's topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
I get the op's frustration, but it's a little mis-guided, as has been so kindly pointed out. As far as players leaving.. it happens to *every* game/mod/sport.. etc. In my experience with modding, (since QTF fyi) I have seen many mods come and go. I have seen thousands of players try out a mod, and realize that it's not for them. This game(mod) is no different.. with the amount of press this mod gets, there is going to be a huge spike of players with every update.. then, as people lose interest, get frustrated, or just move on to something else, those player counts will eventually taper back down to the norm. I completely understand how a new player could get frustrated and rage-quit, but in all honesty, it's their own fault, if they do that. This mod has heaps of potential, but you have to give yourself the chance to get used to it.. it's an amazing mod, but it's just that.. a mod. It isn't meant for *everyone*, it's meant for the players who want something different.. something challenging, and I guarantee, once all the newbs quit and the new players get experienced, this community will still be thriving and it will still be full of passionate people who care about this game. When Rocket removed the starter weapons from the mod, a lot of people complained and bitched.. guess what, it didn't change anything. The players who are passionate and understand this mod for what it is will stick around and adapt, and the ones who aren't cut out for it will leave. I've seen mods (and commercial games) die because the devs tried too hard to please everyone involved.. look at BF3, if the majority of the players complain about some "Over powered" gun, or gadget, Dice nerfs, or buffs it, it's because of all the outcry.. and it ruins the game for the real players.. hell the ones who complained probably don't even play anymore when the update comes out, they weren't serious about it in the first place.. I guess what I'm trying to say is that this mod is here for our enjoyment, frustration and adrenaline rush, but at the end of the day, Rocket has made it clear that this is "not a game, it's art" and it's his before anyone else's. If he wants to make us spawn in the middle of the ocean, "naked, wearing only a cock-ring"*, then that's his call to make.. and I for one will continue playing it. Gladly. :) *(extra points if you can tell me what movie that's from) -

Got a source to back that up? Or is it just stuff you read in other threads, posted by other users who have no clue what they are talking about? The only info on this so far has been some second hand articles based on a supposed conversation between a fan and Rocket at E3.

Actually BI have allowed him to use company resources, from what I've read.. but he's still not getting paid to work on DayZ. He is under contract to work on Arma 3, DayZ is still his own personal side project, and yes, he is still doing work on it in his spare time. BI still has to finish and release Arma 3.. and ultimately, that is what his contract is for. You should avoid using sarcasm unless you specifically know what you're talking about, otherwise you just come off looking like an ass. ;)

I'm seriously amazed that this thread hasn't been locked by now. lol I can just picture the devs sitting around, having a beer and laughing at all the retarded comments. (I'm not referring to everyone, just the people that are still bitching and complaining) The update is going to be released.. With about 5 minutes of research, you can find out what is going on and get a pretty good idea of when things will return to normal. (hint: Google "dayz rezzed") ;) Finally, it's been said plenty of times already: This is a free mod made by a few people in their *spare time* if you don't like waiting for updates some times (they are normally pretty frequent), go play a commercially released game.. not sure why any of us are bothering to post this at all though, mature players are already mature, childish players are gonna stay childish. :P

Looking for more people - creating a small clan
cyanyde replied to GetYouBarbara's topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
Twice in a row I found ghillies before I had even found a primary weapon! Let me tell you, it's pretty scary sneaking around looking like a bandit without a weapon to defend oneself.. D: -
so update ARMA2_OA_Build_94444.zip is out for Arma2. If I patch to that version, will it work? Or should I stick with my working build for now?

know what would be cool? Rabbit snares! Those little bastards are way too quick, it's like trying to shoot clay pigeons in vanilla arma 2.. :(
