Many people use Fraps, but I don't really like it myself. Dxtory is a great program from what I've heard. Try looking it up. -

I recommend that you play the Arma 2 singleplayer tutorials. They'll get you familiar to the controls and how the game/engine works. -

You have to edit the mission file. Just search on YouTube about editing server missions for Arma 2: OA.

Make challenges for yourself or create achievements to keep yourself occupied. Maybe join a random server with a decent amount of people, and survive as long as you can without storing stuff in tents, and vehicles (Nomad style). Until the standalone comes out, there is very limited since this is just a mod. -
As long as we can gave the generic guy as that fish from Spongebob screaming "MY LEG" when it happens.

ArmA 2 by itself is a really great game. I wouldn't get it just for DayZ, due to the fact there are plenty of really fun mods other than DayZ (as mentioned above). Even if the standalone is right around the corner, buying the game and playing the mod before it comes out will still be good of you're wanting to play. You'll be able to get some experience in, and be able to play the standalone with more knowledge than none at all. -

You can't necessarily stop it. As long as people have private hives, and need money to run those private hives, it's going to keep happening. Not saying a totally agree with it, but if I ran a server myself, I would probably do it just so I could pay the rent on the server to keep it up. Then let them ruin their fun. It is their story after all, right? Just play the game how you want to, and let them play how they do! Very simply! -

Welcome to the forums! Being new to the ArmA engine, I would recommend going through the tutorials they have set in the singleplayer. It teaches you the basic controls to the game so that you won't be completely senseless of what to do,
