Why DayZ will fail as a standalone game
floogy (DayZ) replied to TheMachine's topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
I just don't understand why someone with so much dislike for the game would stick around to bitch about it. It's a game, if it was something important then get out and fight for it. But it's just a game, if you don't like what it is or where it's going just walk away. I don't get it. I'm taking a break from dayz since I'm playing other games ATM, kind of waiting for SA. I keep up with the SA development though. I wonder if this kind of rage carries over to other entertainment as well, books, movies etc. -
3rd Party Interaction, and why it ruins the game
floogy (DayZ) replied to applejaxc's topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
I did not read the 3 pages of flaming wreckage before this so if it's already been posted, oh well. While I agree with you in principle, being that the game is better when you're all alone and everyone is a on a level playing field. Like a real zombie apocalypse with no comms or organization. But what you're suggesting is that everyone be dictated to play a certain way. Or use their own personal computer in a certain way, including other non game programs like TS and skype. Those type of people are called dictators. The only way to enforce such an opinion would be complete and total control over all gamers' computers. Communism is a way of making everything 'fair', because forcing everyone to do the same thing is really the only way to make things 'fair'. Except it doesn't really work that way. I think this is a case of keeping your opinion to yourself, or at least voicing it in a less forceful manner. Unless you plan on seizing control of the world and forcing everyone to play dayz your way. YOU WILL ALL BOW TO THE MIGHTY DAYZ EMPEROR! -
Any Servers with... or few other questions

Said no one ever.... Until now. -
Could you have missed the point any more? Since you're attempting to insult me I'll play along for a bit. Could you enlighten us as to where this particular Arms Room is? I'm assuming it's a different term for armory. My point is not that they'll be in an armory, which is obviously where weapons are stored on military bases. I also realize there is not an M107 in every single armory across the world. Where is the armory located? Is it locked?(It's not as simple as kicking in a door in this case). Is there even anything in there? I'm also aware they store ammunition separately. Which raises the other issue of finding ammo for a weapon that would already be like finding a needle in a haystack. So... Your point was finding ammunition for a 25mm Bushmaster cannon would be difficult? I agree. I just said I could get a hold of an armored vehicle more easily than an M107. I was illustrating the fact that even an individual with military experience on a particular base could not easily obtain this type of weapon or even want to use it in this scenario.

Well, I agree with the fact that with a bigger player base the quality goes way down. The Arma series is a pretty hardcore sim so the community has always been smaller and probably older than most other games. So, when DayZ started out there was just people who still played Arma2, mature people who had been with the community for years probably. But for what it's worth, Rocket wanted an experiment instead of just a game. So, we found out the result of this grand experiment, for better or worse. He never had the intent of controlling the direction of people playing DayZ. They play how they want to play. I can't say I like getting shot in the head when posing no one any threat in the game. But you can't dictate peoples' behavior in a game specifically designed with no limits. I still play, it's fun. Once it ceases to be fun, I won't play. Simple.

Bandages... what's the point?
floogy (DayZ) replied to bad_mojo (DayZ)'s topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
I see what you're saying but they aren't much of a hindrance either way so it doesn't seem like much of an issue to me. But it does kind of balance out your secondary inventory slots. So you have to choose between pistol mags and 40mm grenades and bandages. I wouldn't feel comfortable less than three so that leaves 5 spots for mags. I don't think that it warrants modification though. I hope inventory slots in the SA are just general inventory like in A3. No primary or secondary slots just space. Maybe it's just that if you play longer than a couple of weeks you always have enough bandages and it's no longer a conscious consideration for surviving. Even though you always have them you'd know it right away if you didn't. You might get hit by a Z on the way out of town and use your one bandage for that. You get shot a couple minutes later and you'd be screwed, even if you survive the firefight. Food and drink is common too, but still important. I guess what I'm saying is that just because an item is common doesn't mean it's unimportant. I guess someone may consider a rare weapon more valuable than bandages but with no bandages the weapon is worthless if you get shot without them. PS. It's kind of a practical limitation for the mod since you need an item for the action. Without the item there is no interface option built in for bandaging, like you suggest using your clothing. Meh. I still see what you're saying though. Although clothing would be poor substitute for a real bandage or pressure dressing. -
Wow, tough crowd. Oh well, haters wanna hate. Thanks. I'll print this at work for even greater savings!

That's why I don't even bother with the helos. Too much at stake. Much happier alone in the woods.

Your 8mm Mag weighs 22lbs? Holy crap, what kind of barrel do you have on that thing? I bet it helps with recoil but that's crazy. I'd honestly like to see a picture of it. What's the longest range you've been able to shoot at? I bet it makes a sweet 1000 yard gun if it's that heavy, depending on your optics. I've got a Rem 700 in 300 win mag but it's the standard barrel and not very heavy at all (about 8 lbs). A CZ550 is about the same size as a Remington 700 and mine weighs nowhere near that. At least the version in the game. There may be bench guns that heavy but your standard bolt action rifle is going to be in the area of 6-10lbs. An M16 is six pounds, my 700 is 8, the M24 or M40 is a heavy barrel military version of the Remington 700 so add a pound or two for that. By contrast the M107 weighs 30lbs. No one, no matter how built or in shape will be running a long time with that thing. I for one don't care about weapon balance being in the game, it's not supposed to be balanced, it's supposed to be realistic(as possible). Most of the 7.62 rifles in the game are almost one shot weapons already if you hit someone right. I'm more concerned about relative realism. Can the average guy run at 18 km/hr with a 30lb rifle? No. But if you got as tired as you might in real life it just wouldn't be very fun. Sure, .50 cal rifles exsist in the military but they are quite rare. I think on a ship of several thousand Marines and Navy Sailors I saw two M107 rifles during the whole deployment. Those belonged to the Marine Scout Snipers aboard. Maybe a dozen guys total. Cool dudes, but that's another story. If at some point there are .50 cal weapons in the SA I won't mind too much. But they need to be very, very rare. I'd ask this of anyone who really wants the AS50 or M107 because it's realistic. "Ok, it's the zombie apocalypse or the fall of civilization as we know it. You have all the things you need to survive for a few days. Go get a .50 BMG rifle." I live a 2 hours away from Camp Pendleton. I've been there many times over the past several years. I have general knowledge of the base layout from training there as well as visiting friends still stationed on base. I HAVE NO IDEA WHERE THEY KEEP THE M107s. I'd actually be able to find an armored vehicle with an automatic 25mm cannon more easily. No one would ever use a .50 cal rifle in this type of scenario. Even people who own one privately would not take it along. The damn thing can barely fit inside a car.

How many users are on Dayz per day?
floogy (DayZ) replied to SeaNanners (DayZ)'s topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
I bet you could find something like that on gametracker. Even for private hives. Not sure though, they track the server pop for the individual server at least. So it appears they track the number of servers, but not players on their neat little graph. But they could probably figure it out pretty easily on their end. Unless you wanted to maybe see how many players were on at the moment. -
I had heard at the the time that items put directly into backpacks on the ground could disappear. Now when I transfer to a new pack I load directly into the pack on the ground then simply drop the old pack a few steps away and grab the new one. Since I can obviously get into the new pack already and if the old pack disappears from voodoo magic it doesn't matter since it's already empty. It's a lot faster than other ways I've tried, plus if I unload then drop the old pack I have a few seconds to check my back in between. I was pretty new at the time that happened too, so I wasn't too quick with the interface.
-
Yeah, existing loot piles are probably safest. I think the worst case of DayZ sorcery to cause me to lose my stuff was dropping my alice pack to pick up a coyote. I carefully unloaded my alice into a loot pile to pick up the coyote pack. Right after I dropped the empty alice pack, I was disconnected from the server. Came back, everything gone. Booo.

WHAT DA F...!?!? HACKER? CHEATER?

Sounds like a ghost story. -
The 50 BMG weapons are kind of a double edged sword to me. Yeah, you kind of need them to counter vehicles and helos but they are typically used to kill people from extreme ranges. Which is what they're used for in real life as well. There won't be vehicles right away in the SA so that precludes the immediate need for those weapons. It sounds to me like the loot system in SA will fix a lot of these type of problems. Dean mentioned in the PAX Q and A session that they had something like 867,000 (can't remember the exact number) spawn locations now with the new system. So now there will be many more spots to check for these items, but they won't be concentrated in a few key areas. I like the idea that a noob just scavenging some military areas has the same chance of finding top tier stuff as a clan who would now fly around looking for crash sites. I'd like to know if crash sites will be in the SA, which could be interesting depending on whether or not they're included. But either way, things will be much rarer and harder to find since there aren't dedicated loot tables. I wouldn't be surprised if this stuff is included in the SA eventually but I like the idea that an M4 with attachments will be top end gear. It should be like this. Some thing like an AS50 if it included later on should be something rare enough to have 1-2 per group, instead of 1-2 per person. So, an 8 man team spread out looking for loot should be able to turn up enough to gear up pretty nicely, but maybe only find 1 'sniper' rifle and a a few assault rifles for the whole group. No vehicles, at least initially will have a huge impact on loot gathering since it will be harder to hit multiple sites in one go. I'm hoping that the SA makes things rare enough to where not every clan is like a paramilitary unit geared to the teeth. Ragtag band of survivors should be more like it. Strength in numbers not in gear. I want to feel like a noob again getting my hands on a double bbl shotgun or Winchester and being stoked about it.

DayZ Alpha won't launch until launched !
floogy (DayZ) replied to willey.erd@oundleschool.org.uk's topic in Mod Announcements & Info
Dayz has only been around for less than a year. Going from a rough ~100mb Arma2 mod to a full featured standalone game (alpha release) in slightly more than a year? That's fast. I don't think anyone really predicted how big this would get. I also think their plans for the standalone became much more ambitious with merging more tech from A3. June? So be it. More features and less bugs the better. We still have the mod to play which is still being developed and new features added. -

DayZ and Bandwidth - some numbers
floogy (DayZ) replied to taco241's topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
Good info, no wonder it doesn't matter too much when my wife is watching netflix. My monthly usage so far is 331 GB so I'm sure DayZ is a very small portion of that. I don't have caps though. Are you noting the difference between bits and bytes? Since internet speed is measured in bits (lower case B) and data is typically measured in bytes (upper case B). You used both. Just wondering. -

The act of banditry, not so far from realism... (KOS)
floogy (DayZ) replied to Skinny_Man's topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
I think self preservation in real life is what keeps people from going totally nuts in these type situations. Let's face it. Taking someone's life is risky to your own usually. I understand having to defend yourself and your family, something I am a staunch defender of in real life. I will not be an unarmed victim. But you likely would not be putting yourself into lots of bad situations like in the game. You're not going to go scavenging in Cherno with your family, LOL. C'mon kids! let's go to the supermarket and see if we can find another ALICE pack! In a lot of these situations people are going got hunker down and ride it out. If you had to defend yourself, so be it. But even most of the 'bad guys' would likely value their lives enough to keep to themselves. That's why real life criminals are almost always complete cowards who will not place themselves in significant danger. Which is why they target elderly, infirmed and unarmed people. What kind of bandit attacks an armed, able bodied adult? LA riots for example, armed store owners protected their shops quite effectively while police were overwhelmed. Looters are more concerned about getting shot than stealing from someone who poses a threat. Sociopaths are still a minority, despite what DayZ has taught us. -
Great OP, intensity killed me with that picture. Hilarious. I'd be happy to play with ya. I'm a loner in the game most of the time and don't kill without provocation. A couple survivors have made my list on US46 though.

Does anyone actually cares about boiling water?
floogy (DayZ) replied to Leto (DayZ)'s topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
They should give the canteens multiple 'shots' to increase their usefulness. Those type of canteens are quart size (or roughly a liter for the rest of you) and would equal about 3 typical cans of soda by volume. Make it worthwhile to take the time boiling it. Yes, I boil and cook everything now. An infection without antibiotics sucks. -
No, it's really quite simple, you're trolling. There is no underlying message to your posts. Goodbye.

Your bad grammar might be forgivable since English is a second language, but you seem pretty proud of being bad at it. If I could speak or write in Norwegian I wouldn't be proud of writing or speaking it poorly. Obviously since you don't care, I'll spare the rest of the readers here another cumbucket reference. Don't worry about responding again. You've proven my point. You can go on ineffectively not communicating on the forums. Anyway, BTT and my apologies for poking the troll under the bridge. I think that this is important for suggestion posts. If someone has a good suggestion for the mod or SA and it might just be ignored due to the fact that it's presented poorly. Since this mod is community driven it might be the difference between having a cool feature implemented or not.
-
Yes, we can tell you don't care about grammar. This post is so bad I don't even know what you're babbling about. Something like, "I'm always right, even though I I appear to have an IQ in the 50s". Being able to effectively communicate thoughts and ideas in writing has many uses beyond flaming each other on internet forums. Like getting and holding job for instance. You might even be an intelligent person but no one here can tell since you're writing like a six year old. Whatever it is you tried to tell us was lost because no one can understand what the fuck you're saying without re-reading it several times. 'Nuff said. <_<

what brings you to day z ?
floogy (DayZ) replied to Crusader-'s topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
Not to mention hoarding stuff in the forest. I'm a total RPG loot hoarder so if I can have a tent or truck packed with weapons and gear I'm happy. Plus then I can stash the good stuff in the forest while I grab a Winchester and act foolish like trying loot the Cherno fire stations.
