You could create multiple template skins, add some random noise, and then randomly assign to the interiors. It would simply require that the wals of houses become objects with properties. Skin templates also become objects with properties as well. One of the properties for a wall object is a randomly assigned skin object. In this case, you could even have an entirely new look on server restart by simply reshuffling the skin object assigned to a wall object. Easy peasy... The power of object oriented programming. Hopefully his programmers know of this concept and have built it in at the core level, but from the sound of it, their OOP is at house level, and not at wall level. In this case, it is not granular enough... uhoh. :( I hope they see this...

So are you saying it is more like say, a butter knife verses an axe, then? If so then this is acceptable commonsense. The question is, how will one be able to explain why newbies tend to find the crappiest of weapons first instead of good ones... Bad luck? I cannot stress enough however, that categories of guns must be designed from the inside out, each one having distinguishing features in terms of their action, range, power, spread, caliber, weight and handling. In essence, a class system must go into designing weapons for use, similar to how class systems for players worked in past games. And there must be sufficient difference in these classes such that the player identifies these differences immediately. This is not the case in the current DayZ dispensation. Here, you can only tell the difference between an AK and an M4 by appearance and maybe sound... how boring is this, especially when you consider that these two weapons are worlds apart?

After reviewing this blog again, I am seeing and hearing some things that would be considered crap. Firstly, rocket stated that wepons could be considerd levels. This will make the game crap. ALL Weapons have certain advantages and disadvantages, so there should be no clearly defined levels for guns. To say that there exists some better weapon that will automatically trump a previously owned weapon is absurd. Advantages/disadvantages over for example: revolvers vs semi-auto handguns, repeater shotguns vs. bolt actions, automatic rifles vs. double barrel shotguns should be incorporated into the game, as it is a key reason why there are still so many variations of old, yet fine weaponry out there for people to choose from, and most of it has to do with the functionality that the user would like to exploit from that gun. If the current DayZ concept of 'gun levels were true', then there would have long been designed a gun to render all others obsolete. Clearly, this is not the case. Currently, even though you do have a variety of weapons to choose from in DayZ, there is nothing really to set one rifle apart from the other, other than the fact that one fires multiple timess, whereas the other does not. This is BORING and childish!! You don't just design an authentic weapon model forDayZ by designing moving parts for it, and maybe tweeking with the detail. You start with the internal functionality, right down to the level of the type of ammunition it uses. Any less and it is all one big farce. Secondly, where are all the blood and poop stains that go on the inside walls of building?? I am tired of seeing pristine hotel rooms in the middle of a zombie apocalypse. Lastly, if beans sound crunchy or have a crunchy texture when you munch on them, then maybe you shouldn't be etating them unless you desire a serious 'bout of the shittings... just a thought.

Read the full first and second post, please. I have already acquiesced to your request for general vital organ hits. Even in this case, my reasoning is still correct... A man, woman or child on anything that is capable of causing them to rip the flesh from off another grown man's body with his/her bare hands and eat it in a crazed fashion will clearly be more difficult to take down than your average sane person anyways. Not to mention if they are wearing body armor... Hence the reason why headshots or heart counts for a one shot kill. Any other location and you can most certainly fugetaboutit. Armor peircing rounds from a high powered rifle are about the worst sort of ammunition to use on pure soft tissue in this case. You get insufficient stopping power for a crazed zombie at close range. You, sir, are quibbling over over minutiae without even knowing it. sigh. <_<

That's just 'cause you can't make a headshot and want an easy game. Fine. Headshots or Heart. There. Now what? Bet you still can't make either one in a single shot if the target is moving. These are basically the only two main vital organs that should stop a zed clear in its tracks, and both still requires some skill. But, even so, from what I have been wittnessing, with a maximum of three shots, anyone can take down a zombie. There is no way that in 100% of these cases the shooter has hit a vital organ. What if you hit them in the stomach or lung while missing the rib cage, then? An FMJ will pass cleanly through, offering very little impact force, fragmentation and collateral splash damage. Yet, zombies keel over and die instantly. This is bad modelling, mmkay? Very bad. Also, some of these zeds are military personel with FULL BODY ARMOR!! Yet, three shots anywhere, and they are dead, as if they were running around bucknaked! Now fine... if you are saying that the zeds are merely suffering from an infection, then at the very least, if you hit them in a non vital area, they should bleed out and slow down instead of just dying. Also, it is quite obvious that these zeds have acquired some extranormal strength as a result of the infection. This alone should make them more difficult to take down. Your comment is not sincere, because as it is, you don't even have to hit a vital organ to kill a zed. you just have to hit it enough times. Also, read the rest of my post before posting, and you will see why I am right, and you are not.

ROAR!! I demand that zombies are designed so that only head shots or melee hits to the cranium put them down for good. This will be beneficial for several reasons; Not only will you be guarranteed to suffer from the shittings when you see that sob crawl back to its legs even after you hit it squarely in the chest with your shotty, but...with all the effort going into weapons, it would be good to have advantages of choosing one weapon over another. Here's why. As it stands, all you need is an AK-47 to hit a zombie anywhere on the body to take it down permanently. Sniper rifles and weapons such as these stand to be one size fits all solutions. In this case, there would be little to no reason to think twice about holding on to that rusty old over-and -under shotgun found in a barn somewhere, if you came across an assault rifle as the exchange would be seen as an upgrade of sorts. This is totally unrealistic in every way, as each weapon class has its own advantages and disadvantages, with reasons to choose one over the other. This fact must be integrated into the game if correctness is our focus on weapons. On the other hand, if it were modeled such that shotguns taking slugs, buck and bird shot, and handguns taking hollow point, weapons could still be the primary tool of choice for survivors who are not confident nailing headshots clean. Atleast they will have the ability to take a leg off, thereby crippling them from being a fast moving runing zombie to a slower crawling one, or at worst, knocking it off their feet thus giving the player enough space to make a clean getaway. In addition, if a player decides to stick with a shotgun or some such weapon with less range, but more stopping power, the game will become far richer, as players choose their own destiny as to the kind of survivor they will be. Will they be long distance snipers, hanging on to that sniper rifle with scope, FMJ armor peircing rounds capable of headshotting zombies and players from great distances, will they prefer to engage at medium range with a fully automatic rifle, or will they decide to get their hands dirty going in close range wih a shotgun and handgun with hollow-points for close quarter combat? Who knows? You will have to think a little harder about your choices before discarding one weapon in favor of another, in this case. Another nice thing about this is that a player with a set pair of binoculars can assess another player's capabilities and classification from a distance, by examining their weapon of choice, as the player would have placed themselves in a particular survivor 'class' by the simple act of choosing one weapon over another. Finally, it could be used as a technique to curb that mad ruch for the military bases in an effort to secure an M-16 or some such weapon, as there will now be players who will decide that stopping power is probably better for them than range and penetration. ROAR!!

Yea, but these secondary challenges will never be as scary as having to run and hide from zombies that are stalking youwith the tenacity of my x girlfriend, all wanting a piece of tail. With my x, a head shot is about the only thing that'll keep her down for the count. Otherwise, you just knock her off her feet, and she'll be back at your ass again. Dayz should model after this. Another solution would be to have a super-heavyweight Alpha zombie. Kinda like that 'butter's girl' who hangs out with my X..

MOM!!!! Where da hordes of scary zeds?? seems to me like zombie action has suddenly become secondary to PvP group action... I want to be 'shit my pants' scared and DayZ hasn't made me soil myself yet. It's not fair!! I don't wanna play no more. I'm going home. :(

Instead of skill system, implement handbooks

The handbook idea is good. However, with it comes the potential to negatively affect the realism. For instance, what happens if a player looses the handbook for say, changing a tire? Does this mean that their memory to do this task successfully is immediately wiped? This is not very realistic. On the other hand, it is equally unrealistic for a character to have an infinitely extended memory for more complex tasks such as flying a helicopter.. One would naturally forget the subtle details of this if one did not constantly refresh ones' self. More realistically, memory of learned skills should degrade over time, the rate of which is dependent on the complexity of the task. In this case, players would not need to have their manual on them at all times, but would have to keep it stored safely and refer back to it when they need a quick refresher course as is the case in real life. To add to this, it would require 'probability to successful task completion' imposed on the player as their memory degrades over time. P.S. I shock myself at times with such brilliance. Stay tuned for more...

Yea. i think it'd be more fun if you have to make that headshot to take them down for good, or else, empty a magazine on them to knock them off their feet in order to make a clean getaway. It'd be surreal watching a zed slowly ge back up after taking some hot bird shot straight to the chest! You'd be like... oh shit! Let's d' d the phuck outta here!! That way, military weapons such as AK's and M16's that take armor penetrating FMJ rounds would not be as valuable as say, more civilian type weapons that take hollow-points, slug and bird shot which offer larger take-down forces due to their spread. Armor peircing rounds tend to penetrate clean through soft tissue, with less impact force than say a hollow point or buck shot. This kind of ammo would be more favorable since there are less people with enough skill, capable of making clean head shots, whereas with a shotty, you could take the leg of a zed much easier. Military grade and sniper weapons would only become useful for long range sniper or PvP, hence effectively managing the problem of rampant PvP kills.

    K. now I saw the vid: www.youtube.com/watch?v=tc_C6ylIK_w and there are a few things. 1) Big mistake for not including quests!! You will regret this, Dean Hall. 2) I thought zombies were killed by a head shot only... a shot to the torso should slow them down, not kill them! What gives? 3) Rooms need to be dirtier. e.g. poop, flies, corpses, garbage, blood stains, last month's food, puddles of stagnant water from leaky faucets and graffiti should litter the rooms. In other words, you have my authority to 'go to town' on the rooms. don't hold back because of me!

Wow, Mr. Mouse... you sound really old. Was that like back in the 60's when you had to buy PC games in cardboard boxes? You are correct, tho.
  19. I am very confused by this response. The problem of foliage is indeed a deal breaker for me. Will this issue be addressed?
  20. have you considered that you might just be going through menopause? It's nothing to be ashamed of, you know...
  21. ...but you are the Sauseage King of Chicago! There are no tropical storms in Chicago. Chicago isn't even tropical... must have really taken your kingdom by suprise!!
  22. will there be a rare form of super badass, loner, alpha-male zombie like the ones in s.t.a.l.k.e.r (without the strange appendages)
  23. omg, where the eff do you guys find these truly odd vids... you go scavenging the weird part of the internet?
  24. I think it would be grand if a person could carry two long guns... a long rifle (bolt action) for sniping and a shorter one maybe a shotty or a grease gun slung around the back
  25. I'm not very happy with you saying that at all... Take it back. >:(
