Is DayZ really set in fictional Ukraine?
Cap'n (DayZ) replied to Mr Sunshine Kid's topic in General Discussion
I wholeheartedly agree. Some expanded lore would be amazing. Hell, explaining the connection to the armaverse is frustrating enough. It'd make it a lot less painful to write up some stuff on the website and some items in-game. -
Is DayZ really set in fictional Ukraine?
Cap'n (DayZ) replied to Mr Sunshine Kid's topic in General Discussion
We play in a distant Northern province that has a large Russian minority. If you've ever played ArmA 2, or read some of the billboards, or the posters in the clinic, you'd know that the actual Chernarussian language is Czech. Besides, we're about 200km from the border with Takistan. And countries like Azerbaijan and Armenia have quite dynamic climate changes along their borders, and not all of Afghanistan is arid desert. I wouldn't call Armenia or Georgia middle eastern countries, yet they happen to border a good handful. And again, Russia controlled Chernarus from the 1600's until 1990. Maybe they changed the town names to something a bit more distinctly Russian during the tenure under it? -

One thing wrong: Russian is not the language of Chernarus. Chernarussian is identical to the Czech language, and the developers had some fun with it back in the days of old (a civilian named Pepa Zdepa, or Joe-from-the-Depot is my favorite. Cyrillic is used alongside normal latin letters. I've come to multiple conclusions with this; Chernarus is probably a former property of the Bohemian principate, and was established in the Middle ages as an exclave outside Bohemia. That, and outside South Zagoria, Russian and Cyrillic aren't even used to the same degree, as the ethnic Russian population is a lot less in Western Chernarus (think Kirovograd and Novigrad). The geography is probably much different, as the country borders Takistan, a middle eastern country covered in deserts. But habitat changes are incredibly abrupt in places like Armenia, so maybe Bohemia could base a future DLC map off of Kirovograd/Novigrad, and make it distinctively more Western (Chernarus is distancing from Russia, as the two aren't on the best of terms), while still having a unique geography. Wouldn't that be cool? -

Dear Moderators, This should be pinned to the general. This is vital information that the greater community has ignored. Heed my simple request, and I will fangirl my ass off. Best regards, Captain. PS; don't let Ceppy run me over again, Skoda on leg doesn't feel good. -
Oh god. The image of beardo tacticool operators is burned into the back of my eyeballs. But I look forward to having a nice stache with some sweet burns. Ladykiller, that's what I am!

Couldn't you guys post some of the info on Chernarus on the main website and kill some of this silly speculation? -
Things that make me wonder about the whole DayZ deal and idea/direction of the game in general.
Cap'n (DayZ) replied to Hetstaine's topic in General Discussion
No. It's not. I doubt pasting all the trash pile decals and more burned husks would make anything better. Besides, it's Chernarus. No one other than Bohemia (more specifically, Ivan Buchta), has authority to say what Chernarus should be. Actually, the fact that Ivan Buchta isn't involved with map design has really grinded my gears. Thinking of giving it a throw in a rage thread, but I don't know. Honestly, I don't. Really. -
Majority no? What the fuck is wrong with you people? You guys aren't any fun, are you?

What Is Your Favorite Current Food In Game?
Cap'n (DayZ) replied to Deathlove's topic in General Discussion
Rice & Canteen. Simple, keeps me fed, and relatively easy to find. Minimalism is the way to play the game. Greed is the easiest way to get killed ;) -
A big island instead of generic land in north and west
Cap'n (DayZ) replied to roguetrooper's topic in Suggestions
This guy, I like this guy. He knows what we need, not what we want! But anyways, there is a reason why Chernarus is the way it is. EVERY terrain prior to A2 was an island. It was something new, and I hate people that want to desecrate Chernarus further. Bohemia knows best. Their games are always the best when they ignore the wailing masses. -
Increase Chernarus size with the new engine.
Cap'n (DayZ) replied to TiredMiner's topic in General Discussion
Wrong. They can't expand it, because that's not how Visitor works. Even if they have a "new" engine (still RV, get over it), they're still using Visitor to edit terrains. If I remember correctly, after you choose the terrain border size (15x15 in SZ's case), you can't change that afterward. Technically, it's impossible to expand the map itself. They can however, expand outwards towards areas that are covered in the AU. Miroslavl' is only 3-4km from Kamenka, and we even have a road sign for it already. Wouldn't hurt to start small, by expanding outside South Zagoria. -
I saw on twitter today that they've opened up some 75 slot servers in Europe & US. I, unfortunately, was kind of busy when they were testing the 100 player servers and never got the chance to experience. After spending 30 minutes fighting every other bastard trying to get in, I gave up. Sometimes it would show a slot, I'd make it, then it'd show "Connection lost". Other times, I'd just get beat by someone who was faster. I got tired of screaming vulgarity at the screen, and gave up. So how is it? Is the map overcrowded? Is loot spawning correctly? Is desync not too bad?

The only forumer I've met through name identification was leviski, and that was back in the mod days (shame we never met up). I try to be a friendly person, regardless of who you are/where you're from.

You can't "demand" anything. Surprise! Bohemia doesn't have to fill your every whim, or else the game is a scam. /rant Anyways, I'd like to see basic implementation sometime near the start or midway through beta. Before beta would be amazing, but they still have to code and animate the V3S (even though they mentioned having A2 vehicles working with new physics system). Maybe we'll be getting it earlier than expected?

Progress is looking nice, finally getting on track after the huge additions to the team.

In most undeveloped countries, cellphones are far more common than you'd believe. Somalia, of all places, has a thriving mobile phone industry. In places like Afghanistan, it's often far easier to simply set up a cellular network in a rural area than setting up telephone lines all over the place. But I don't support the addition of cellphones to the game. Doesn't fit the atmosphere, really.
