Yes, your tears are delicious. Besides, the majority of clothes are civilian. I'm at a lost as to why you all cry every time anything vaguely military gets brought up. What, does all military hardware magically vanish when the apocalypse hits? Doubt it.

I geeked out when you started talkingg about the ArmA campaign. It's a shame no one ever played them.

I want a BRM-1K with advanced optics, long range radio equipment, 73mm 2A48 Grom cannon and PKT medium machinegun. All with room for seven fellow comrades in the back. But they would whine. "ew, it's about survival!" Well, fuck em. Give us our BRM, Bohemia!

Any of you guys wonder what time period dayz is in.

Chris Torchia confirmed it on Twitter. DayZ rides the back of ArmA 2, and launches of into alternate universe oblivion some time before the events of ArmA 3. -

Correction! Chernarus is NOT socialist! It's a relatively young democratic republic founded after the collapse of the USSR, and has been molded by years of civil strife and economic stagnation. Their best known exports include beer, lumber, more beer, more lumber, and Takistani oil. While there is an appreciable level of corruption in the north and eastern parts of the country (those most sympathetic to the ideals of Russia, much akin to Ukraine), the government is still very pro NATO and the population is extremely nationalistic, to the point that the actual Nationalist party has a pseudo military arm. It's a bit complicated, and nothing you could learn without a bit of digging. As for the setting, it's set sometime between 2013 (date of CDF peacekeeping in Takistan) and 2017, confirmed by multiple food models containing the date. -

Not really impressed. I'll still trump any of you of John Wayne wannabes at a hundred yards with my Mosin. Remember kids, Soviet Ostern beats bourgeois Western! -
What is it that makes the fps so bad? Engine? DX9?
Cap'n (DayZ) replied to Halven (DayZ)'s topic in General Discussion
Not really. OFP had some high requirements in the day, but it could be done. Armed Assault wasn't much different. Even base ArmA 2, I could still squeeze 50-55 fps with my GTX 470 and Phenom X6 1100T, and probably more with a better processor. I think most of the performance problems associated with the series is because of the new antialiasing system introduced in OA and the surge in popularity bringing in people with VERY inadequate rigs. -

I seriously have never understood why people require 60+ fps. I run it with a flat average of 40, and I've never had any real issues with lag. It'll dip to 30 in cities, but I still don't have nay problems in CQB scenarios. It was the same in ArmA 2, and then it didn't bother me either. Is 60 some magical number? -
"East" is most popular. Make of that what you will... *cough* berezino deathmatchers *cough*

That really touched me. I can't help but feel very cynical after two people attempted to kill you with no provocation, but that's kind of guaranteed in the game. There is nothing stopping them, and they have little to gain and everything to lose if they risk trusting you. But still, there are people out there willing to risk everything just to help someone. And that itself warrants respect. Anyways, I enjoy your play style vids. And all of your content in general. Very informative and fresh, something I can enjoy for once. Keep up the good work ;)

Hey, hasn't Bohemia also successfully ported RV4 to the consoles? Does this have anything to do with the sudden announcement of a DayZ console release?

Why...........(movement and avatar control)
Cap'n (DayZ) replied to creativecole's topic in General Discussion
I think the surge in popularity has brought people from much humbler shooter backgrounds. Games that try to be authentic/realistic (aka; ArmA, Red Orchestra, Insurgency, and DayZ), tend to add weight to make it based less on reaction time and more on positioning and tactical knowledge. For example: Pistols are lighter, and you can move and turn quicker with them. They're a better choice in close quarters than a Mosin or CZ. The game is trying to have some authenticity and realistic qualities to make it a challenging and hardcore experience. I doubt we'll see any arcade features in the near future. -

Balancing comes beta. Until then, the only purpose is to offer different servers for people who want it either way. I pray they don't force first on us. That'd be awful.

I hate people like this. Stop being so ignorant.

That's funny, because I find ArmA quite fun. A lot more fun than any other fast paced shooter out there, that's for sure.

I've always had a disliking towards other people dragging strangers into a play session with me. Not only have I never met these people, but I can't really gauge how they'll act. Will they be competent? Will they have a friendly demeanor? Are they going to get us killed? Well, a friend decided to drag on two "buddies" of his to play with us. We were all scattered across the map, whilst me and my good friend Skat3 were stuck in lowly old Berezino. He had just murdered an axe wielding psychopath in the police station, so I was already on edge. The other guys were mostly west, and all met in Elektrozadvosk before we even left the town. A man needs his loot, alright? So after the arduous task of combing every town block, we made way for the Solinchiny factory. There, we would meet. I tabbed out, and turned on VNV Nation, and enjoyed the music while we made our journey. It was a bit difficult to enjoy over the constant bickering of the two guests. One was not given the chance to loot up, and the other had been shot in a friendly fire incident and needed saline (or something like that). I tried my best to ignore them. Finally, we set foot in the factory. They arrived a short time after, with zombies in tow. The whiny, younger one clumsily attempted to dispatch their pursuers with his machete. I grumbled and stepped up to assist him. With two swings of my axe, I finished both of them quickly. "Get rekt!" he enthusiastically yelled over Skype. Oh great. One of those people. Yeah, I'm a judgmental asshole. Seeing as the kid wasn't looted up, I decided to be generous. I pitched in a holster, and an ammobox with assorted rounds. The other guys gave him an engraved 1911. I admit, I was pretty jealous. But all he had was a pistol, so he was a definite burden. The other guest, however, had an SKS with PU Scope. He could be depended on in a fight. Unfortunately, he was a very sarcastic and hostile person. That also bothered me. He didn't seem so much of a friend as someone who constantly antagonized the younger one, but he was pretty annoying at times, so I could understand the attitude. So, at this point, I was merely a bit skeptical of the quality of our new comrades. I asked them a question. "Either of you played the mod?" Nope. Both of them didn't. Say what you want, I just don't trust the skill level of non-mod players. A mod vet understands the game a lot better, and thus was usually more dependable. I'm certain there are good players who didn't play the mod before, but I just haven't met any. And yes, they were bad. They both suggested we run in tight groups so we could keep "track of each other". What? That was an awful idea. We'd all get picked off in seconds by someone with an AK. I had found a pristine tent hours earlier, and I had yet to see what it looks like when pitched. They didn't either, so I decided to pitch it. Everyone was amazed, and they all grouped around it. We took a group picture. But then it went into packed form, and the younger one quickly muttered "Quick, take it!". Nope, having none of it. Took back straight into my pack, and turned around. It was hard to tell if he was kidding, as the urgency felt pretty genuine, but I shrugged it off as a joke. It hadn't gone downhill yet. Not until we reached the clinic, at least. What followed next was a bit difficult to discern. I was only watching, but my mutual friend jokingly suggested we give the young one alcohol tincture. I had some charcoal tabs, so I wasn't concerned. Next thing you know, Skat3, who didn't know these guys either, was involved. The other stranger was angrily pointing his rifle at him, threatening to shoot if he did anything. I had little grasp of the situation, so I raised my rifle too. Our OTHER friend was still chasing the kid, and he had his pistol out. So at this point, it was some kind of dysfunctional mexican standoff. Skat3 was getting the dreaded LMB bug, so he had to relog. Then, the other guy asked for his younger friend. "He man, I don't trust Mosin guy (me) and his little buddy (Skat3). I say we kill him." This concerned me. I flatly told them, that I did NOT want a fight. They didn't seem to care. Seeing as they were going to probably shoot my friend when he logged in, I retreated to the woods to watch them from a distance. Eventually, they did catch on. "Hey, were'd Mosin guy go?" "No idea, I think he went up to the woods." "Yeah, that sounds about right!" "Hey, let's kill his buddy when he logs in!" That's were I drew the line. I was going to kill them. I discussed it with both the friend on Skat3 over Skype, away from the two strangers. I'd lost the trust of these two, and wasn't having none of it. Skat3 spawned in, only to meet with the two. They were angry at me, and were threatening my friend quite loudly. The other friend, who introduced us to these two, was quite neutral. He even instigated it! But I didn't mind. I didn't know these guys, and I had no qualms with killing them. I took some poor potshots, and everyone went to the eastern side of the clinic for cover. My only choice was to get closer. So I flanked along the treeline, past the farm, past the green house, and through the small factory neighborhood. I eventually found a fence with some bushes for cover, facing were they were in cover. I could only see my two friends, and neither of the aggressors, so I crawled up closer to look. I messaged my good friend Skat3. "Are you ready for this?" "Shoot the (younger one) when you get the chance!" I took that as a yes. I snuck closer, until I got the clearest view of him 'd be afforded. I went into my sights, and centered it between his shoulder blades. In one swift click, he falls in a mist of blood. Skat3 quickly reacts, looking to the other one. He raises his SKS, and empties an entire clip directly into his chest. Mission accomplished. We had made two enemies, killed them, and laughed our asses off for the next ten minutes. We hid their bodies. I even got my grubby hands on his shiny engraved pistol. But, the moral of the story is; Don't trust anyone, even if they're mutual "friends". Of course, that goes both ways...us included :murder: :beans: ;)

That is how the Russians write/pronounce it. I'd assume anyways, because Bohemia does have a few Russian developers on their team. And that was there in ArmA 2, too.
-
My main gripe is that what little military we do have is not only bland, but rather ambiguous. We don't have proper NATO gear, but we don't have proper CDF/Eastern gear either. Not sure if it's just the Alpha-ness, but I feel like we need more than just a few berets and UN helmet to represent the multiple factions that probably played a large role in the outbreak. Torchia confirmed the ArmA connection (what a good thread name...), so when do we get our shiny Marine, CDF, ChDKZ and Russian Ground Force gear? AKA: less bland military hear.

Some Constructive Criticism about developemental direction: (WARNING! LONG POST!)
Cap'n (DayZ) replied to crazykage's topic in General Discussion
Also, a lot of problems with the game can also stem from the surge of new players after release. A lot of these people simply watched videos, and assumed that the game was nothing but a shooter and PVP. Therefore, even if all the survival mechanics and balancing are in place, it will still be VERY difficult to persuade anyone otherwise. So we'll simply have diseased, starving, and dying airfield campers instead of healthy campers... Still, it's a change. -
This isn't you're average shooter. They aren't looking for balance, some guns will just be better. It was like that in the mod, and it will probably stay that way. Once server loot quantity is implemented, you'll be finding a lot less AKM's and a lot more hunting rifles. So, get used to fighting clan wars with a hundred year old bolt action rifle, as you'll be hard pressed to find an assault rifle. Also, setting; you can't just add every gun you want to the game. There is lore, and it is following a backstory (it's a spinoff of ArmA 2, much like Joey is to Friends). Some guns don't fit the setting. And the developers are planning on making survival aspects play a much larger role. Soon, you'll have to manage your health, hunger, thirst, and find medical supplies whilst avoiding contracting deadly diseases. And zombies will definitely be buffed at some point. So, you'll need to manage more than just your ammo. I suggest you find a game better suited to your needs.

Came here expecting people debating on realism. Get to see the same old cynical idiots complaining about the game. Go back to your rage thread, we're here to have a civilized conversation and you just fuck everything up...

It makes more sense to make small leaps before tacking on the big hurdles. You might have expected a reworked mod, but they're making a new product from the ground up. I'm content with the progress made, and it's some pretty far since release. No one ripped you off. There was a disclaimer. We're all testers, and we're being given the chance to test an unfinished product. We provide feedback on the implementation of new items, and report bugs. This isn't a finished game, and it won't be for a while. You read the disclaimers (I hope), and no one ripped you off. The developers have gone through painstaking lengths to remind people this is a buggy, unfinished game in progress. Every time a developer makes a tweet, reddit, or forum post about ANYTHING, someone just has to complain- "No vehicles, this sucks!" or "Why isn't this finished yet, I've been ripped off!". It's Alpha. It's development cycle is barely over. We have six or so months until we hit Beta, and another year until full release. It is VERY early to make grandiose assumptions that the developers have ripped everyone off, made a shitty game, and that the mod is glistening example of superiority and polish (it's not). ArmA wasn't exactly designed for the exact needs of DayZ. They're trying to change that, by making a new game. Not a polished version of the mod. An entirely new game. This will take time, but I've said that a million times before. It just needs to be drilled into the thick heads of a very vocal minority. I've logged in almost 400 hours, and I have reaped more than enough out of the thirty dollars I've spent. Better than any gimmicky ten dollar indie title or triple A sixty dollar game has brought me in a very long time.
