After almost 14 months away from both the standalone and Mod, I have returned, and here are a few of my observations thus far: 1) There are more zombies now, I reckon the zombie spawns in SA are perfect, no more or less required for the finished product. Also, the zombies are a lot more hazardous. 2)There are far fewer weapons, I mean come on wtf! Don't get me wrong I understand the Dev's are wanting to make it more difficult for you to gear up, thus increasing your eagerness to survive, but surely the game has maybe gone a bit too far. There seems to be very little in the way of even essential loot available, which makes the finding of weapons seem even more amazing when it eventually happens. 3) The everquest I have for a can opener, when I last played dayz I had everything required for the apocalypse if I had a can opener, today that holds true but there doesn't seem to be any anywhere. I know you can use a screwdriver etc. but surely in an apocalypse people aren't going to run to the local shop and clear out the can openers, surely they could be more common. 4) I still feel that the best experience is to be had on the mod, and possibly even the vanilla mod. I think having the traders in any server ruins everything. What are the biggest changes you have noticed, and what are your opinions of it?

10-15 kills so far, in maybe 50 hours. Mostly because they were trying to hold me up/ were trolling/ or unresponsive in chat. I am now looking to kill anyone I can, in an effort to try and get myself killed, as I would like to try and get geared up all over again. I'm looking forward to some new content in order to spice things up again! bring on Hunting!

I'm at 32 hours and still on my first play! :) Now I'm tooled up and surviving on my own it's easy, it is definitely much easier than the mod, but it was tough to get going at first. After getting to grips with the Food/Health/Water/Blood system thanks to MerinoDAYZ's vid's the game does get better, you spend less time gathering the meaningless stuff and simply travel from water pump to water pump when moving around, you have more time to travel and find trouble. My only thing so far is that even though I play on busy'ish servers I rarely discover proper action, I've had a good bit of fun at Lopatino getting caught up in a clan war type thing, but the map now seems more detailed and better balanced so it spreads people out more. I was absent for most of the Balota carnage early on.

Combat logging is a horrid thing, and while I appreciate you were trying to do something good, it is in excusable. It takes all the fun out of the game, if you avoid KOS'ing and then your prey simply logs out to avoid you, its a real painful thing which makes people more likely to KOS afterward. I have had a few close calls, when I wasn't careful enough and they've got the drop on me, I haven't logged once. I enjoy the duck/spin/shoot combination, its a great card to play in those situations, even though it only works 25% of the time.

Loved this! Loggers really boil my piss! ...And just to weigh in on the argument, it is such a good way of dealing with the combat logging problem! It is obvious when someone logs, and whoever 'forced' the person to combat log is able to take advantage of the guilty's cowardice, I reckon you'd have to be awfully unlucky to fall foul of this if you were simply logging off in a bush somewhere. ...unless you were a total muppet! I always find a nice out of the way spot before logging off, it helps a lot when you log back in knowing you are not going to be under pressure straight away, giving you time to settle in.

The best ever moment anyone will have ever in DAYZ!

This was a triumph! My first character is still going, despite having had a few close calls, and here is the story of what happened today. Me and some guy called 'xXFLAPSXx' who I picked up on the way were doing a bit of scavenging near Berezino, some psycho ran in out of nowhere swinging a bat around and xXFLAPSXx brought him down with his magnum, all this was fairly routine and I had seen it a thousand times before. ...we thought we could hear a chopper at first, but we knew this wasn't the case, and so we continued to go about our business. On returning to a fountain near to where we killed the guy earlier, the sound grew louder and we could make out someone talking, it sounded like someone talking to or playing with a small child. We could hear some non descript murmors and then we'd clearly hear '...there he is, aren't you clever..' or the even scarier '...nom, nom, nom I'm going to eat ya', yes I am nom, nom, nom...' We knew someone was afk nearby, so we decided to look for him, after what must have been 15-20 minutes we spotted him prone in some bushes. He was marvelously hidden, we'd walked past him a few times already and hadn't seen him. We decided to see if he would move anytime soon, but he didn't, we could still hear him chuntering away to the 'baby' in the background when all of a sudden it struck us. If we could hear him in direct chat, he should still be at the keyboard, we decided he must be able to hear us and we started to try and communicate. No sooner had we said 'hello?!', he was up and running toward us with a fireaxe saying 'I'm going to get you little man' in the same voice he had been using the whole time! Realising we had just been epically trolled, I pissed myself laughing, as xXFLAPSXx panicked and started to unload his revolver at the oncoming attacker I called out to him. ME: 'Hey mate, we're friendly!' (a difficult stance to try and take when you're buddy is shooting at the guy) TROLL: 'Here comes the aeroplane!... <NEEEAAAAOOOOWWWW>' xXFLAPSXx was killed by MyFavouriteEverPerson* with a fireaxe (*not his actual name) ME: 'DUDE STAHP!, this is funny, but please, stahp, I don't wan't to kill you' TROLL: '<NEEEAAAAOOOOWWWW>' MyFavouriteEverPerson* was killed by GreenMachine with an M4 (*not his actual name) MyFavouriteEverPerson* body disappears into the ground (*not his actual name) Words cannot describe how much I laughed! This is an urgent appeal, if you were, or you know who this mystery man was please get in touch. I figure it must have been captured on film, I am so eternally gutted that I didn't get it, I will never forgive myself! Please share this with people, spread the word, I need you're help to find this man! -
sorry, have seen that its called the hunting backpack, not the assault backpack. my bad.

it was more of a rhetorical question, but either way I don't know which server I was on.

Ok, today me and a buddy were heading back up North after meeting up not far from Balota. We managed to see of a couple of bandits on the airfield, they limped off and we were left to take the spoils, so my mate now had a hunting backpack and an M4. Moving North we encountered a few bambis running headlong through the fields, whilst this was entertaining, it soon got sinister around Lopatino. It seemed that about 4 guys had hunkered down in Lopatino and were seeing off any potential invaders with deadly force, it must have been a clan war kind of thing going on, because we couldn't make head or tail of it! We decided to weigh in on the action, we took out a fella with a Moisin in the large industrial building, and then tried moving up on the town proper. There was someone in one of the buildings to the right, and he had us pinned as soon as we got into the open, after a few minutes of absolutely bricking ourselves, we decided to leg it! Tom got shot up quite badly, for some reason he got a bit confused and ran the opposite way to what we had agreed and then had to run back to me, we edged carefully around the West side to try and spot any of the others. We encountered someone taking a drink at the fountain near the church and took full advantage, bringing him down with a well placed round from my M4. After a few more minutes of moving around, it became clear that they were covering the outskirts of the town and not the interior, Tom eventually succumbed to a magnum wielding maniac in one of the buildings we were trying to clear. I decided that it may be tough to take the remaining guys on my own, so gave it legs to the West, eventually reaching cover in trees and started heading South to meet up with Tom again. Anyone know whats going at Lopatino?

Am I naive in wanting to learn the map myself?
ottovonlarnie replied to General Desire's topic in New Player Discussion
After countless hours playing the mod, you eventually get to know the map, but once private hives come in with custom buildings etc. it can get a bit confusing. IMHO try to avoid using online resources such as DAYZDB for maps while playing, it is more fun to get lost and have to work it all out yourself, but they can be worth studying a bit to work out locations for looting and routes for travel across country. -

These video's are great! I watched your other videos the other day, and made a comment about hydrolysis of starch in uncooked rice! I have followed much of your advice, it has helped me greatly, I've been plugging your videos in one of my other topics. -
Tips Needed For In-Game Settings Please
ottovonlarnie replied to DeepEuphoria's topic in New Player Discussion
You're welcome! and yes, that post processing tip is important, lots of people assume its buggy because they sometimes can't get the blurriness to go away (its also quite severe at times). But this isn't a bug, its actually an important indicator. -
really? holy sheet! lol! I thought it was pretty good, but I ditched mine in favour of an extra 300rnd box! ;)

Tips Needed For In-Game Settings Please
ottovonlarnie replied to DeepEuphoria's topic in New Player Discussion
I try to play with my settings on as high as I can go all the time for every game (that's the way it should be played!), I am fortunate that on my PC I have no problems running everything on max and still get 45-60FPS. Despite some people saying that certain settings cause bad FPS drop, I haven't seen any significant change in frame rates other than what you'd normally expect. Resolution and effect detail seem to soak up most of the resources here, none of the post processing or anti aliasing settings seem to change anything noticeably. My laptop seems to run it well with medium settings, but that is at a lower resolution, my advice is... Spend a good 10 minutes tweaking your settings in a quiet corner of the map, see what works best for your rig and you. Try not to disable post processing if you can help it, as it serves as the only indicator of your health status (it's responsible for the blurry screen which gets worse the less health you have). Also, I have seen the benefit of tweaking my FOV to a slightly higher value! -
Right, I am now at 1050 rounds!!!! 3x300rnd boxes and 3 coupled STANAG mags! Today I cleared out three fellas at the NW airfield, to be fair I didn't mean to kill one of them, he was a friendly dude I'd met a few moments before. Him and this other guy started shooting and in the heat of battle I did what I had to do to survive! lol! ...I shot everything! The third guy tried to hold me up, when I do it to people I am always very nice about it this guy was blatently going to kill me. For some reason he thinks its safer to get me to drop my M4, which was previously on my back (big mistake), as soon as I got it in hands I dived left spun round and emptied 30rnds into him! he managed to get 1 .357rnd off, but missed me thank fuck! So, now I have explored a good chunk of the new stuff up North, leaving the NW airfield now heading to the wreck N of Berezino. I'm going to go via Grishino, Devil's Castle, Gvozdno, Krasnostav and NE airfield. Plenty of water pumps on the way, got to keep drinking. On a slightly unrelated note, check out some vid's by 'Merino Dayz' on YouTube to do with the hunger/thirst/blood/health jobbie, they changed the way I manage my inventory and it means I don't have to waste valuable ammo space on carrying beans! I now permenantly have the 'healthy' status indicator, and in my minor skirmish earlier I managed to go straight back to 'healthy' within a few minutes.
