I like to think as humanity as how human you are (obviously). i also tie This in with posttraumatic stress disorder. Soldiors get PTSD from war. This changes them and makes them a little crazy and less human (sorta off, I'm trying to not offend people). Even though the terrorists were shooting at them too. Dayz humanity should work the same way. You lose it even if they are trying to kill you.
We also shouldn't start with painkillers. Who washes up on the shore with a box of painkillers other than prescription drug abusers Just realized This is getting off topic sorry
I had an interesting first kill experience too. Well technically it wasn't my kill but ill explain that later. I had been playing for awhile specifically playing on low player servers to avoid pvp contact. I had already collected a DMR and an M9. One day me friend joined for the first time so I took him to the NE airfield. This way he could get some good loot. In real life I had to go help my dad cut a piece of wood for our entertainment center so I ran into the woods and went AFK. I came back with my friend yelling to me over Skype that people are coming. I switched to my DMR and scoped in at the airfield. I saw an ATV with two people approaching getting out of it to approach the airfield. My friend was trapped in the hanger. This is when he made a Bambi move and took off running to the air control tower. The players immediately saw him and told him friendly as they pointed their AK and MP5 at him. My friend pleading for them to please leave, but the players wanted to loot here. They also started moving towards the Air Control Tower even though my friend told them to keep their space. This is when I decided I should do something. I told my friend to tell them that their is a sniper watching you. Of course they called bullshit and moved closer. I then aimed and took the shot on the first guy. I missed by a mile. I hadn't prepared for bullet drop or travel time. After adjusting my aim I fired a few more times. I hit the second guy in the leg and he dropped down. At this moment his friend combat logged off and left him to die. My friend finished him with the M1014 he found, but I still got most of the kill.
This may work: you put knockouts and some sort of restraints like handcuffs in the game. When you are knocked out or handcuffed you are considered in combat so you cannot combat log out. The next thing is players who are in combat will be able to log out but it will kill you instantly. This would allow you to stay alive with the bandits until you realize you are never getting away so to keep the Game fun you can just respawn.
This may be difficult to do, but if you want to break their legs to stop them you could throw an empty whisky bottle at them. They would still be able to shoot at you though.
