Having been on Steam since 2004 I can say that VAC stops a lot of people. I used to hear that same sentiment from a lot of people while gaming but then I started paying attention to how many people were showing bans on record. You can see it at the top of someone's account. It also tells you how many bans on record they have and what engine the ban occurred in. When someone is VAC banned, they are banned from every game that uses that same engine. Get caught hacking in Counter-Strike Source and you can't play Team Fortress 2. Today, a lot of people think that VAC doesn't work because of the built in delay. This allows them to ban people for offenses while adding the possibility that the cheater won't know what exactly they were doing wrong so they it will be harder to adapt their cheats. The problem there is that while the delay is going on there's a ton of actual cheating that can go on. There are also things that cannot be fixed. Anything that hijacks incoming data to create an overlay or provide other usable information is extremely hard to stamp out. Other games that allow a client to tell the server what is happening is also easily hacked. Its funny watching videos on YouTube of someone claiming to have gotten around VAC who then has a ban on record a few weeks later.

Definitely loving that new picture. Cool stuff when you consider how much harder ESP hacks will be with this setup. Whatever it takes! I have a feeling it will release after I've just spent what free money I have.

Hello everyone, I have a few questions.
hogscraper replied to xoiio's topic in New Player Discussion
When you die, you respawn at a pre-determined spot but there are tons of them so its kind of random. You can actually go into the database and edit the spawns so you could choose to spawn anywhere you want when you die. I set up some mini games on a server I used to have where depending on where you spawned there would be different situations for you to deal with. To be honest, though, you should tinker with the loot on your server as little as possible. The very first time you give in and give your guy something its all down hill from there. The pursuit of loot and survival are the only things that make this game fun when no one else is around. If you really wanted to mess with loot but keep it fun, you could delete all of the spawn points, then give yourself spawns right on the coast near Cherno or Elektro. Put what items you would like around the city but keep them spread out and keep them simple and bare necessities. Then you would be forcing yourself to do a loot run through the city every time you respawn and you would know the rewards and be aware of the risk in getting your free starter gear. That way you could give yourself a low level gun, some food and ammo and other basic supplies, but you would be making yourself work for them every time. If you plan on building a base and defending it you will really want to make it near one of the bigger cities anyway. Not right inside, but at least close. If you fortified a barn there wouldn't be too many zombie spawn points in the middle of nowhere so you might not have many to kill. Some of the most fun I've had in Dayz was setting up some situation that had a high chance of death and going for it. If you have the ability to set up your own server, I would just password it and keep in mind that there are others who like a laid back approach who you could survive with. If nothing else, watch the forums, set up your server, learn to write missions and see if you can't find a couple people to have fun with. If you plan on doing this long term, learn to love http://community.bistudio.com/wiki/addAction You can add any item you want to the server and pretty much make them do anything you want. Its a long road to walk, but it will increase your fun exponentially learning how to make custom things happen on your server. -
Shooting open doors in SA..
hogscraper replied to NagsterTheGangster's topic in DayZ Mod Suggestions
Even an unlocked door could be blown off for effect. I would really like to see this. Also, why couldn't they treat it as a shield with X damage mitigation that also moves like a door? I know in Arma you can test to see if a door was damaged but I think it was still part of the house model so I don't think they were ever able to separate the two. If they could, when the guy outside shoots the game could easily tell if the guy in the house was in the line of fire, then just subtract X from the damage done and turn the entity's exist state to 0 and add some particle effects. They would probably have to add a hitpoint value to the house's model.cfg just for the door, though. Strange that they coded doors to detect damage but that they can take as much damage as the house itself so technically they are both destroyed at the same time. -
Technically anyone can change the name of their app while in development to whatever they want. Halo, 2 and 3 have shown up in that database with Microsoft saying never going to happen and we don't know what that's about. So who knows. Would be an epic troll or an epic win for a Halloween Alpha release. Either way, good times are ahead! IRT I would wait either way. At this point, even if it doesn't come out in the next couple weeks, you really should find something else to get into and just wait it out. I am on a two month hiatus and only really play here and there when a friend needs some help with something. I really want a clean palate when I jump into SA for the first time. If the above turns out to be a rumor and it ends up looking like a release after Christmas I would spend the cash and jump in. Otherwise you're dropping twenty or thirty dollars for something you may only be playing for a very short time. Contrary to what some people say, Arma2 is garbage unless you really, really like military sims with dated graphics. It was great a while back, but if you buy it for Dayz, don't expect to get much play value out of it at this point in its life.

Does knowing how to read a topographic map help you?
hogscraper replied to rooniedoo's topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
It helps when you first get started. It might help you later on if you find yourself in a part of the map you don't usually go to. When you first start playing you have to learn the cities and where they are in relation to each other. After a little while later you will start to know the land for the most part. I remember being a noob then one day realizing I knew exactly where I was and how to get where I needed to go. Maybe it could help you with distances if you were sniping. -
Why hasn't KOS chimed in? He's going to be pissed someone wants to play without him. Really cool guy... Why would you hate on him like this?

Will hackers really be subdued in SA? Not likely.
hogscraper replied to Ozelot (DayZ)'s topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
Things that made me leave public servers and only play on a couple well policed private servers: Item dupping. Should be a thing of the past due to the way they are implementing item creation and database storage. If the server creates the item database it would be easy to check if a player has gear that was actually created by the server and if not, just delete it as a mistake. If everything is loaded and saved only to the server, and item quantities are checked against what has spawned it should be pretty easy to ban people for that type of hacking. ESP hacks. Given that each player will only exist inside a small bubble of what they can see, it should drastically limit the extent of what another player can do in that regard. If they can see you, what would be the point of using a hack to see you? If they can't see you then the server should not be making that info available to use. Auto-Aim - Not sure if there is much that can be done about this. They can limit it some, but people have been pretty crafty at writing programs that not only get your cursor exactly where it needs to fire, but can add in misses or sway or anything else to fool a third party looking in. Other than mining data and seeing if the exact same things or speeds occur there isn't much they can do about it. God mode - teleportation - affecting another player in any way - all should be impossible due to the way they will be monitoring players' positions, gear, life, bullets etc. All in all I'm stoked at how much better it should be in the SA. -
People just dont do role playing anymore
hogscraper replied to meat pie's topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
Haha Gews! I play hero on servers where I frequent but occasionally I get pissed at dying and want some action. Easiest way I've found is to claim ownership of anything in Elektro. Based on the action I always get I figured most people already know 'I own the church' was universal language for 'come at me bro' to the whole server. To OP:Maybe they were devoutly religious and you just did something very sacrilegious to them? Either way I'm sure that even in RL, if an armed man shouted out from a local church that he now owned the place, the end result would likely be the same. Roleplaying and realism in one. -
I don't think you can print that from map out from Chrome. I tried last winter and all it gave me was a blank background and some labels. I ended up getting a free app for android called Dayz Central. Has the same map and weapon info.

When I bought my Sidewinder X5 I was pissed because it was all I could afford at the time when my DeathAdder died. At this point I will probably buy a similar mouse to this one when it dies. I am very hard on my mice and have dropped this 20+ times over a year. No worries. Fell into a cup of water, dried it off and it worked fine. I do have fairly large hands, though, and it fits me perfectly. Definitely a fan of the durability and weight of the X5 now.

yet another story of how you can trust no one.
hogscraper replied to thecoolestloseryouknow's topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
So Dean could have very easily deleted AS50s, M107s, DMRs, belt fed machine guns, grenade launchers, satchel charges etc from the weapons database and specifically CHOSE NOT TO and that has somehow lead to me not understanding something? Or do you think he left them in the game naively thinking people would only use those weapons against zombies? Even in the SA there will be military grade weapons that will nearly be exclusively used to kill other players. He has said the SA will make ammo very, very rare but he is still leaving some very powerful, player killing weapons in the full release. Maybe I'm wrong. Maybe I'm playing the game incorrectly because I don't head into Elektro with a granade launcher with the intent of using it just to kill a few zombies before aggroing the entire city to my location. -

hogscraper replied to thecoolestloseryouknow's topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
Stopped reading at 'cod kiddies'. Idiots and butthurt losers love that overused term. You're playing a mod that is based on top of a game designed around finding weapons and vehicles and using them to kill people. Bummer that people are actually using those items for their intended purpose... -
So Battlefield is not simulating a battlefield? I didn't say they were doing it well but it is what it is. I did say that it would be a better choice for someone looking for military grade gear used for killing people. Also, when a zombie apocalypse happens and a base is over taken, I would think the barracks or some other general use building would be where they made their last stand. And when they get up and walk away as zombies that would seem the most likely place to find the gear they left behind. Maybe today, when nothing is happening an armory would be the likely place to find it but I doubt anything would be left behind there during the end of days.

why i wouldn't make it through the zombie apocalypse in real life
hogscraper replied to Gwraspe's topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
No need to lose your music! I love hacking into stuff and a couple years ago realized that Home Depot sells off a lot of it's solar powered yard lights at the end of the year. I bought a dozen for less than a buck a piece because I found out they actually contain AA batteries inside. Sun light charges the battery then the light runs off of that at night. I tried it out with a few and figured if the electricity ever goes out for any reason I can still have a supply of charged batteries. I also bought two of these power packs that will charge my tablet and my phone using AA rechargeable batteries so I should never run out of music! My downfall during the apocalypse will probably be other people killing me to take my stuff. No matter how badass you think you are there will be groups of ex-military or biker gangs coming to take your shit. Unless you're in a bigger group, you might be done for. Probably won't be too many lone-wolves in a real zombie apocalypse after a few months in. -
I've seen people use tank traps and barbed wire to funnel people a certain way through Elektro and Cherno. I generally hunt bandits but this one group of four I came across, I had to respect their planning and left them alone just to watch their plan unfold. One guy with his back to the coast, traps set on main road. People coming down the coast would try to avoid traps by turning towards the coast but some random bullets in their direction and most were panicking before turning into town. A couple streets well barricaded directed around five cars that day into a kill box they had set up. Was pretty cool watching it all happen.

Comic was pretty dam funny. It's actually been a long time since I laughed out loud at a comic. Thanks! I propose we reserve all future use of that word only to describe your avatar's hair or itself in general.

Is this a hacker/cheater modus operandi?
hogscraper replied to punky (DayZ)'s topic in Mod Servers & Private Hives
Well you didn't actually see him server jump did you? You said you only supposed he had been on the other server you went to when you really don't have a reason to think that at all. It could have been a coincidence that you were at the same location where he had spawned in. You said you left and went to another server after he spawned so the chances that any given player, (realizing they are on a now empty server), would head to NWAF for easy loots is pretty high. You killed him so he definitely wasn't using god mode. He had a decent load out, but I have had better myself and never cheated. I've found a few NVGs and many, many ghillies and camos in apartment buildings. I've watched two groups of people slaughter each other with everyone dying and came in once the dust settled to loot their corpses. Five minutes and I had rangefinder, two NVG, a dmr, an as10 and multiple sd pistols. It could have been a hacker but it definitely doesn't sound like it from what you've posted. -
Definitely agree with my non-native English speaking OP friend. At least ban them from hosting on the public hive and relegate them to private only, (once or if those become an option with SA).
-
I completely agree Karmaterror. Some people may make a mini game out of hunting for crash sites, but since they randomly spawn, it comes down to a:hunting for crash sites and lucky enough to stumble into one with almost no risk because you're in the dead zones of the map where people don't usually camp and just a few zombies spawn b:randomly wander around the map and luck into one with almost no risk because you're in the dead zones of the map where people don't usually camp and just a few zombies spawn Either way you put almost no risk into finding one and the people I see complaining about low loot spawns are probably the ones that have grown soft in being able to safely and routinely find great loot. Compared to the risk of Stary or NWAF I feel crash sites offer about exactly what they should at this point. There's even greater risk going into a town and looting the grocery store so the loot at crash sites should be even lower than that. Medical supplies and food. That's what people hiding from risk should be rewarded with.
-
Maybe that's the entire point. When you can find military grade loot everyday at dozens of sites it makes the entire point of the game using those weapons instead of just surviving. They don't want Dayz to be a military sim but a surviving sim. That's what Battlefield3-4 is for. And get this! They actually give you tons of military grade loot BEFORE you spawn! Can you imagine? A game where people want a military sim experience who can just jump right in a start killing! I'm pretty sure you're playing the wrong game.

[POLL] Are you going to Kill on Sight with new item degradation system ?
hogscraper replied to Safire (DayZ)'s topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
I'm not a bandit and usually live and let live, until they see me. If I see someone who points a gun in my general direction I kill them unless they have a pistol or hatchet and move away from me. I used to be nice and naive then I died one too many times. That being said, I have never killed someone for their gear or their food so I couldn't care less if what they have is broken. People keep saying stupid shit like, "good luck with that! bullets gonna be super rare!". So what? It usually only takes a couple bullets to kill someone anyway. If its die and lose everything I have or kill and maybe break all of their gear at the cost of 2% of my total gear I have no doubts which way I would lean in that situation. -
Dear Rocket and his team, no private hives, please.
hogscraper replied to Dekkymane's topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
The biggest problem with an idea like that is the genie is out of the bottle. People have already gotten accustomed to being able to have everything at will and most will not likely go back to vanilla even if quitting is the only alternative. I do intend on playing on public hives as the only reason I left them to begin with was the abundance of hackers. Once they get their network bubble figured out my one complaint should be gone. That's not to say that six months in I wouldn't want something more, and private hives might offer that extra content and experience that dlc would if it existed at that point. I agree with the OP that it would definitely help the game in the long run if they forced everyone on the same public hive for the first few months. The biggest threat to a stable community right now is the ease with which every twelve year old playing can pull just a few players away to a private hive. Once doesn't hurt anything but when the vast majority of servers have just a few players it doesn't help anyone. I always laugh at the amount of people trying to advertise this new amazing server that's loaded with absurd crap. The perfect piece of evidence of this community being broken was a post I once made on these forums. I made a joke post about a new server I opened that had thousands of vehicles, hundreds of helis and F18s, donate for an invisibility cloak, etc and people actually thought I was serious. I expected a few pages of people laughing with me and instead found people actually thinking it was real. It was kind of sad really. -
how to kill a spawn killer with style
hogscraper replied to meat pie's topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
There's a guy on these forums named Gonzo. Class act. Always willing to drop what he was doing to help someone out. Hero through and through. A server I frequented had a massive bandit clan and one day they decide to betray the Hero to the People. Most bandits left him alone because with Gonzo doing good deeds, the bandits could generally lean even more to the evil side and people would still play there. When the bandits wrecked his camp, was it to steal his stockpile of AS50's? Nope, he didn't collect weapons. All they got was his vehicle and a ton of medical supplies. Things he could use to help people. Then they mocked him relentlessly. I'm all for wrecking a camp as I hate hoarders. But when its a guy who does nothing for himself and only works to help people, that kind of pissed me off. I started mocking him in chat with them and slowly worked my way into their group. Twenty people strong, two of which I found out were using ESP hacks, and they let me in. Slowly over the next few weeks I did things I didn't want to do. I shot noobs asking for help and LOL'd in side chat. I shot out tires of hidden vehicles. All in the name of making these guys think I was like them. After a month I had found every location of everything they had which included all of the server's helis and good vehicles. That's when the fun began. I would creep towards Elektro, claim I was taking fire and ask for help. When the bandits came I would shoot them in the head and claim it was the sniper. I'd claim to have killed the sniper and tell them to come get their gear as I was full up, but would hide the corpse. I wake up for work at 4am and knew no one was on so I would login and torch a few of their vehicles. I would pick a guy who I knew didn't like another one of the bandits and tell him that guy was talking shit then a few days later after the vehicle got destroyed I would innocently add that maybe it was him. After two weeks of playing with their heads the entire group was ready to blow up. I had four separate sub-groups ready to kill all the others and grateful for my help in exposing all of their treachery. I convinced multiple groups to make a play at taking over the bandit group. Then, when everyone was ready for war, I sent a list of the coordinates to every camp and vehicle they had to some heroes on the server. The next day was like WWIII and none of them had the stomach to do much banditry after that. It was a shame that they spent their lives being assholes and picking on other people and the first time they have a real struggle, every one of them quit playing altogether. -
Helicopter stolen again... le sigh....
hogscraper replied to JPWiser's topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
This is the type of thinking that would ruin the game. They already have exactly that mechanism on some custom servers that have these domes that can only be entered by certain players that own them. Dumbest dam thing someone could do to a server as eventually it means that there are no cars to find on the server. Brilliant way to take a HUGE reason for exploring away from anyone joining your server and basically allow players to lose all fear of losing their gear or any need to ever explore. How fast would someone erect these around the barracks at NWAF? Super awesome idea. You know who would love this idea? Lazy people. Lazy people and cowards. Lazy people, cowards and people that have no concept whatsoever as to what Dayz aims to do or the reason that most people like playing.
