    Servers

I was having an issue where it took a minute or two for the servers to show up. If you only see full servers click on one of the headings like players or ping and try to re-sort them.

    Head Torch

Instead of L I've been double tapping middle mouse button for flashlight so that may work for the headlamp. I had one but didn't care for the angle and direction it was shining so I never really played around with it.

    How to gain blood?

The coolest thing I found in game so far was the blood test kit. Found out my blood type is the same as in real life. Anyone know if that changes on restart?

    Post Your Gear So Far

Started off thinking the masks were pretty lame. Then I found five of them in my first hour playing. Still lame when I can't find enough food to keep red fainting and dizzy warnings off my screen. Guess I have many choices to look 'cool' as I starve to death. Found so far: dallas mask, hoston mask maybe? didn't recognize the name, wolf mask, damaged dallas mask and damaged wolf mask cooking pots kitchen knife firewood matches baseball bat defibrilator two batteries three drinks two food items three warm hats four baseball hats three raincoats two winter hunter pants three shirts two regular pants two motorcycle helmets multiple duct tape hand cuffs set of handcuff keys pen couple books or notes, not sure 12 shotgun shells blood test kit(turns out my character has O+ blood just like I do in real life so that was cool) backpack(12 slots I think) other random things. Most of those items I didn't bother to loot. Found a couple food items, was starving and light headed so I ate one can of sardines, immediately said I was hungry again. Ate a Pristine Kiwi. Honestly not impressed at this point. Spawned and was thirsty 10 minutes in so I figured my character was stranded or lost and needed stuff quick. Logged off with red warnings about being dizzy, feeling faint and starving. Is there a certain amount of food and drink you need in your first two hours or do you just starve to death every couple hours?

Holy mother of ... (Release surprise)

Money is spent where you think it is worth it. There are no good or bad times for a release of something except in the context of how much money a company will make. Releasing now means more people that can't afford it might be able to get someone else to buy it for them for Christmas. Not sure of conversion rates but here its $30. For a game I expect to get 100's of hours of enjoyment out of I'm willing to sacrifice a dinner or two out this month to get it now. edited: I think the price is exactly where it should be. This will keep non-fans from 'wasting' their money on an unfinished product and will guarantee that only people interested in helping the devs make their bills will buy in at this early stage. A lot of fans would gladly buy it at fill retail price to get in months before the full release comes out.

That is awesome! Glad you had a great time. Just got off of work and am downloading the game. Can't wait to see the changes!

Dean - Sort it out man. Losing your way

I like the SA enough that I want to play it now. Maybe you missed the words I typed where I specifically said I would pay full price to play it in a broken state. That's how much I like Dayz. Way to swing and miss again. I also said what I said about modeling as the few live streams I've watched before this last one recently included showing off things that had just been modeled like the compass then talking about we have tons of other stuff we would like to add to the game but that stuff will have to come later. Then watching Dean try to run into a building and say we still have some buildings that need to be remade so they had interiors. My bad for assuming those things are more important than a mask. I really hate when people who have no clue decide to spout off. Holy crap we have something in common. We should be friends!

Dean - Sort it out man. Losing your way

Can't tell if serious or just really bad at trolling. Or do you have confirmation then that everything else in the SA at this point that needs created is already modeled and skinned? I'm not making an argument that people doing this are holding up the game, but I am saying that when I hear that there are only a couple weapons and one with attachments that works maybe the modelers and people that can create skins should maybe work on things that players are looking forward to. Release alpha with one working gun with attachments but a bunch of clothes and masks? I'm pretty sure having buildings that need remodeled so that they are actually enterable are on the list of things that need finished before they release.

Dean - Sort it out man. Losing your way

I can only speak for myself, but its not that the masks are in the game that bugs me. Adding hundreds of tiny things to the game that add variety is awesome. Its just that I want to play a Dayz without hackers and would love to be playing right now. The SA, whether you mean for it to be or not, is my last hope for Dayz. I stopped playing the mod because the mod became something I don't like. I play BF4 to get my helicopter slaughtering defenseless fools on the ground fix. If I want to snipe some guy that just spawned from 1100 meters out I can do that too. Dayz mod has become Battlefield without the conquest points and non-threatening zombies thrown into the mix. The last server I played on ended with me getting run over by an APC about thirty seconds after I spawned. I look forward to actually playing a game about surviving in a zombie apocalypse. I want to buy the SA today knowing that it its broken and not ready. I want to buy it today regardless of its state because it seems to be lacking all of the things that make Dayz less about survival and more about just killing as many defenseless people as possible. I want to buy it today because I believe what you've said about the processes put into place to severely limit hacking. I'm willing to wait around, lurking of the forums, until it releases. Its just a huge let down to be told it needs to be perfect before it releases but then we see added fluff items that aren't part of making it awesome thrown in. Don't mistake my impatience for anger. I want to play Dayz and anything that appears to not be getting the SA out the door is a disappointment.

Sewers in DayZ - Aftermath WIP

Um, would you be opposed to Rocket and team blatantly stealing this for SA? Awesome idea! The sewers are some of the creepier, most fun levels in Left4Dead. Just being hemmed in with no where to go makes whatever happen more intense.

Quick update for 4 December 2013

Dammit. It sounds like SA is getting closer and I just started getting into State of Decay. Just kidding. I would buy alpha today if it only had one gun, one bullet and one zombie.
  12. I must admit this is the first story like this in a long time, that I've read to the very end. Awesome tale to tell BlurHitz and thank you for telling it!

This^^ Encapsulates what a lot of people are feeling right now. Delay the Alpha because you want it to work? Great. Show an update photo of a stupid ass mask and star spangled underwear? ...
  14. lol no doubt. I'm a hero so I will respond to calls for help on the coast but only if I have a friend online as well. Hide all my gear except a few things needed to survive and head out. Have my friend drive me close, jump out and he takes off while I do what needs done. I would never just run along the coast though.

    Your Greatest Friend in DayZ

Since I try to play hero I will always respond to bandits and threats with bullets. I have only had a dozen or so people try to get me to put my weapon down. The first time I gave up my gun and got shot in the back of the head afterward. After that I have always fought back and only once did I die trying to kill them. There were actually four of them and I killed two and got a horde of zombies on our location that took out another one of them. All the other times the guy trying to be a tough guy got shot. Its assumed that anyone sticking me up is trying to get my gun and ammo and will kill me afterwards. Given that I have no reason not to die trying. At the very least our fight will bring every zombie in town so if I die they will either die as well or drastically lower the amount of ammo they have.

how do I stop the animals from spawning!

I had a server with Dayz.st and could use their control panel to delete goats if I wanted. Every instance of everything could be deleted or modified. You just remove the definition for it and it wouldn't spawn.
  17. I would consider it the same as combat logging and there's just no way you can not think of it as cheating. Players that do it know they are exploiting the game but no one can punish them for it so they think they're getting away with something. If you ever see a player do this in game, just wait them out and welcome them back into the game with a nice warm bullet. I've waited an hour and a half when a guy combat logged on me and the payoff was definitely worth it when i shot him in the face. Worst part of losers like that is he was trying to kill me as I went to answer a call for help. He then logged when I fired back and hit him a few times.

how do I stop the animals from spawning!

Depends on who your provider is. If you have a decent database editor through them you should be able to edit that to keep anything from spawning on your server.

Can someone please tell me how to pitch a tent?

You could try getting drinks at the Tilted Kilt. Seems to work for a lot of people.

    The map

Learn the Russian alphabet. Seriously. I took a few Russian language classes in college and knowing what the signs say made my traveling as a noob with a map fairly easy. A lot of them are easy to guess if you don't know the alphabet as a lot of letters are the same but some of the town names are beyond guessing. Every town has a sign on the road into town with it's name. Even if you don't have a compass, if you can read the town names, you should be able to walk into any town, compare the surrounding land features and buildings to the map and find your way to whatever destination you want. If you do have a compass even better. If you find yourself in the middle of the map and can't get your bearings down, just pick a direction and keep moving. Eventually you will find a road and that will always lead you to a city if you aren't at the far north of the map. When I first started playing I randomly decided that the area between Gorka, Gvozdno and Krasnostav would be my home base. Every time I died I would mark one of those cities on the map and head out. Once I had that small area memorized where I could navigate without the map I picked the area between Lopatino and Zelenagorsk and started hanging out there. I kept doing that until I could spawn any where and know exactly where to point my guy in order to make it to any city on the map. One final thing I would add is learn where all of the markets are. If you are running around the middle of the map you can easily find yourself starving or suffering from dehydration and knowing where the markets are can be life saving knowledge.

    despair NEAF

I had built up a pretty awesome NEAF on a server I played on and it was funny that it took three months before any new players found the changes. People seemed to just forget NEAF and go straight to the north west.

    Adding a Piper Cub

Personally I hope they don't have aircraft at all. Being able to cover the entire map in a few minutes breaks so much of the spirit of Dayz. One or two people in any type of aircraft can locate and loot/destroy every camp in the entire country of Chernarus in a very short time. Having any aircraft at all forces everyone on the server to play around that fact. You can pretty much never hope to have a tent last more than a few hours without being looted and most people just end up spending their entire day looking for a heli to help them loot camps faster. I get that there are many different uses for them and the ones I've found have been used to help people but it just makes it too easy to find loot and takes survival out of the game. If they do end up putting aircraft in I can only hope that its not helicopters but instead a small two seater like you mentioned. At least that way they would be about impossible to land in heavily wooded areas and would be easy to shoot down. Or just make them seaplanes only so you have very limited places to take off and land.

More animals that react to players behavior

Hopefully, after SA is fully released, they start to work on some expansion packs or at least dlc you can get for free. One I hope to see one day is realistic animals. At a bare minimum I assume the animals they have already mentioned will be killable for food but I hope they add in reactive behavior. At the very least I want them to flee from people. How cool would it be to see a deer take off on another hill or a few birds go flying off from a bush and know that someone was near. Or you hear something, your heart starts pounding, you see birds fly away so you creep around some bushes looking for the kill and come face to face with a bear. It would definitely add a new dimension to the game and even more immersion.

The "End Game" does not belong in DayZ

Dayz, including Epoch servers, already has everything he claimed he thought the game should have. The problem being that isn't recognizing the fact that everything you get out of Dayz is internal to yourself. There will always be something more to achieve until there isn't. At that point you have reached endgame if that's how YOU gauge your progress. To me, even on servers with all that other junk, the point was always to create my own missions and try to survive. Hunting down a sniper with just a pistol. Choosing some item at random and running through Elektro trying to survive while finding that item. It doesn't matter if I spawned fully geared or found someone's base and looted it I would still find something interesting to do that has nothing to do with gear. The problem isn't that there is too much gear and stuff in epoch its that people find that the only interesting thing in the game. If more people than not are only finding enjoyment from gearing up and killing other people its either a problem with the player not having an imagination or a problem with the game itself not giving them something to do. You would have this problem whether the best gun is an AS50 or an enfield. If that's all there is to do, that's all there is people will be doing. As for safes, I would like to see something like that added to the game, but very limited. Instead of being 12 blocks wide and 5 blocks tall, let them be only two blocks wide. That way you could safely store food or antibiotics, ammo and things that are small in there and lock it so it can't be looted. If you die, the lock breaks and anyone can open it or delete them from the game altogether. That seems like the only tradeoff between the realism of someone being able to lock up valuables and the game breaking ability of people being able to negate the losses usually incurred from death.
