    Australia's finest snipers

This seems a bit pretentious, don't you think?
  2. Exactly what Blunt has said. In case it wasn't clear to you, DDR400 = DDR memory with an operating frequency of 400 MT/s. That's ancient tech dude. It sounds to me like your friend has just ripped you off with a very old computer, upgraded with what is more than likely the AGP model of the HD3850. Realistically though, that card is going to be bottlenecked severely by the rest of the system. Basically, nothing worth holding on to, save for the case perhaps.. Sorry to say, but you're best off getting rid of that thing.

    Hi Nice To Be Here

The bots are out in force today!
  4. There's a very simple explanation for use of the term. Pbremmus has already alluded to it. Association & Adoption. Clearly some members of the community associate shooting on sight and taunting with the stereotyped overly competitive Call of Duty playing kids. A few people initially coined the term, throwing it around in heated web forum topics which were then viewed by others and soon enough, it was a wide-spread and commonly used term for describing players that display this kind of behaviour. (The same theory applies to memes, to some extent.) The accuracy of the phrase is unimportant, after all, it is based on a stereotype. But as the stereotype is well known by the community, it functions well as a means of conveying the concept that it is being used to represent. That is why the term 'CoD Kiddie' is used. TL;DR: It's concise and it expresses the intended concept through a commonly recognized stereotype.

    [HELP] Errors Running DayZ

Okay, the explanation above is somewhat unclear, so lets clear that up for you. THE PROBLEM: As I understand it, you have purchased ArmA2: Operation Arrowhead (OA standalone) and not Combined Operations, which includes ArmA2 and ArmA2: OA. Because DayZ requires resources that are present in ArmA 2, but are not featured in Operation Arrowhead, you will have to copy the addons folder from ArmA 2 into your Operation Arrowhead directory. But because you do not have ArmA 2 (the original game) this isn't possible at the moment. THE SOLUTION: You will need to download ArmA 2 free, which can be acquired here: http://www.arma2.com/free Once you have downloaded and installed ArmA 2 free, you will then need to navigate to it's installation directory and copy the addons folder into your ArmA 2 Operation Arrowhead directory (within the steamapps/common/ directory). I hope that this solves your problem. If anything is unclear, or you would like more information, you can find the full instructions here: http://kodabar.blogs...rma-2-free.html Best of luck.
  7. Too right OP, +1 internets for you good sir! The prevalence of hacked-in weapons does not justify their use when presented with the opportunity. I find it fascinating that the community is generally galvanized against hacking within the game, yet some players are willing to scavenge the resulting illegitimate items, all the while having the audacity to claim that because an item was spawned in by someone else, their use of it is somehow rationalized. That is flawed logic, if nothing else. Cognitive dissonance at it's finest... Thanks NZStalker.

    Server admin teleports and cheats

You were playing on a private hive server, so no action can be taken against the server operators. They are free to do as they please. If you intend to play on servers running private hives and/or custom maps, I'd suggest finding a reputable server with a good community behind it. (though unfortunately not mine for the moment; We're VPN exclusive and are not currently accepting new players )

Edit: By the way, without going too far off topic, does anyone know what the maximum allowed resolution of embedded images is? (you know, before it is delegated to a link?)

    Zombies

It isn't the zombie model detail/complexity that limits the server's capacity to handle more of them, as the server does not actually have to visually render anything, the additional load to the server comes as a result of having to perform additional calculations in accordance with the number of active zombie instances, and the bandwidth required to share this data with the connected clients. In other words, the limitations are still in place, regardless of the state of the zombie models.
  11. Thanks Nik. So supersampling anti-aliasing results in greater visual fidelity when compared with multisampling anti-aliasing. As you said, it is downsampling from the higher resolution source, as opposed to MSAA's per-pixel method at the native resolution. So essentially, SSAA provides a more accurate anti-aliasing solution at some additional processing expense. :)
  12. I have also experienced this issue with my PC. I think that it may have something to do with having a CrossfireX setup as I have two HD4870s in CFX with identical symptoms. As even a single HD6990 is overkill for ARMA 2:OA, you may want to try disabling CFX under Catalyst Control Centre, then launching the game (running on a single card). I haven't tried this myself, as I play on a gaming laptop most of the time, but it seems like it may be worth trying. I hope that helps.

When can we create LAN server

Agreed. It is designed to be a large-scale multiplayer game/mod for a reason. Player interactions should (and do) take precedence over PvE gameplay. :)
  14. I've never quite understood the purpose behind setting the 3D display resolution to anything over 100%. Essentially all that it results in is some (very inefficient) anti-aliasing, right? I suppose that if the game is consistently running at over 60 fps it might be feasible, or perhaps there's something I'm missing. :P
  15. Just out of curiosity, what are you using to record gameplay? There may be more efficient applications available to you that don't affect the performance of the game quite so adversely.

    Brother's Laptop

Based on those figures, it should be capable of running DayZ, though performance wouldn't be ideal. It should run well enough with the majority of the settings on low, though as I often say, don't expect any miracles. Best of luck though. :)
  17. That is unusual.. Your system should be absolutely fine. A few things to try; Firstly the obvious, make sure that your graphics drivers are up to date (latest Catalyst Control Centre in your case), likewise with Direct X. Also, if you are running DayZ without the most recent beta patch for ARMA 2:OA then I strongly recommend running the latest Beta Patch. This can significantly improve performance. If those suggestions don't help, then you might want to consider trying Game Booster. It closes any unnecessary background processes while the game is running, freeing up system resources to provide better gaming performance. It could be that you have a rogue process that's griefing your system in the background, so if that is the case then this could help. Best of luck. :)

When can we create LAN server

If you'd like to run a private local server & hive, then I'd recommend DayZ Control Center: http://www.dayzcc.com/ It's very easy to use and set up.
  19. The CPU is fairly low end and a little dated. Unfortunately, being an AM2 socket CPU, it also means that in order to get a decent new CPU, you'll have to upgrade to a new motherboard also, unless you manage to obtain a faster AM2 chip, but due to the age of the socket and the processors designed for it, that's probably not a worthwhile investment. In addition, as you proclaimed, the graphics card will have to go. The 8600GT is a fairly dated mid-range card, so replacing that will be necessary. Theoretically, you could -probably- get by in DayZ with a new mid-range or high-end graphics card in the existing system, but the rest of the system would certainly bottleneck it fiercely, so I wouldn't expect miracles if this is your only option. In summary; The graphics card is a must, but for optimal results and performance, the Motherboard, CPU, Graphics card, (and if you're currently sporting DDR or DDR2 memory) RAM also. ____I've decided that I have more to type :>____ That's basically a complete system rebuild, save for the HDDs, Optical drives, Case and PSU, so you may want to consider building a new system altogether, if that is an option, and reserving this particular system for other tasks. (media center PC, home server or whatever.)

    The best idea/suggestion yet.

The whole point of this sub-forum is that it allows the community to share ideas which may or may not be good, that the developers may then read, consider, and potentially utilize as they see fit. The game is still entirely the work of the DayZ team, and nothing is lost through community suggestions. On the contrary, fresh ideas can bring great new concepts to the table. That's why it is important that the community has a voice in the creative process.

    Dayz and 'perks'

So this is essentially an attempt to increase player cooperation, as I understand it. I get where you're coming from, but to put players in a position where cooperation is sensible you would first have to nerf player abilities well beyond reason, as you put it, literally removing the player's ability to fire a weapon without first acquiring an artificial 'skill' to do so. Due to the volatile nature of the game, most players do intuitively act to either avoid others, or shoot on sight, so removing the ability to perform the latter from the start of a life presents a whole different problem. If 'skilled' players (that can use firearms) wish to do so, they may easily dispatch other players that do not have the ability to defend themselves. I don't doubt that many players would be willing to flock together, but this potential problem is still something that needs to be considered. If I may share an overused catchphrase that nonetheless speaks volumes about the wider DayZ community: "Some men just want to watch the world burn." and I don't doubt that this would be emphasised by the implementation of weapon skill requirements.

    Dog fights?

You'll have to forgive me for being a bit sceptical about this. How would a player find, and then befriend a dog within the game world, realistically? & How would you expect having a dog companion to fit into the existing gameplay once the player has one?

    A brainstorm of DayZ Ideas

You've got some nice ideas here, though several of them strike me as not being feasible for implementation into the mod (from a game designers perspective) based on existing game engine limitations, and the relative complexity of the idea. For instance, your ideas for increased interaction with the environment would require game assets that simply don't exist at the moment, and would not be easily implemented without some hefty modifications to the core game & engine. That aside. Mostly everything else sounds plausible at least to some degree, though I've got to agree with Vindicator in saying that adding any sort of character building element to the game doesn't really tie in too well with what DayZ is all about. Still, a nice thought, keep them coming! :)
