BikeMan - June 2013 - Interview/Livestream with Rocket
Wep0n replied to SmashT's topic in Mod Announcements & Info
you put it as if all survivors are murdering bandits xD okay you are probably right, but lets ASSUME there is actually a person trying to survive and not be a bandit. for me it is still a civilian. a poor soul which might have starved, died of sickness, shot, eaten by zombies, jumped from a house as an act of desperation... i would really feel sorry for that person. more than for an artificial civilian which I KNOW is not actually a real person. i am fine with signs of devastation and military barricades and such, aslong as it doesnt look staged. novy sobor is a good example... some military tents and cars show the severity of the situation. but i do not want to see something staged in the sense of trying to construct a scene which looks too artificial. i.e. a dead corpse, and something written on the wall with blood... i mean come on guys, we are not in left 4 dead... lets keep it serious. now let me quote chris roberts: "i dont want it to feel like i am playing a game. i want my actions to actually matter and have an effect on the persistent world." even your own death is an impact on the universe. someone will find your corpse, maby a note you wrote in case someone finds your body... it will be really dramatic. staged things just make it feel gamey. in a negative way. -

well yes, it is close to assume that something like that (like placing a corpse in a house) would really fit in. but the same thing can be achieved by player corpses. and a player corpse has actually a real meaning to you, and a context. places where you find corpses tend to be more dangerous. and using your fantasy to recreate the cause of death adds so much more to the game than a static corpse which is always there and means absolutely nothing. and imagine how interesting it would be to study the corpse, and like in "trouble in terrorist town" you may draw conclusions. and this is again an example about how your skill in determining a players cause of death is going to be valuable in certain cases. even if its just for immersion. -

after listening trough it again, i discovered something really nice. the fact that they are not going to add artificial horror elements into the game. everything will be context-based, and everything you see will be player created, and not artificially placed into the map. i am really happy they continue their radical route in creating something completly unique, and not be driven by the standard idea of "this game has to have this feature because other games have it aswell" -

this is so fun. i hope someone is recording this/uploading it once its done, i want to listen trough it again... his comments on gaming hit me every time... i am going to write a compendium of rocket quotes one day... absolutely hilarious and totally true at the same time... even though he is not trying to hype up the game at all, he is comstantly pointing out bugs, he still manages to raise my hype enormously. Thanks Smash for your wonderful efforts in keeping us guys up to date and morals high! -
maca, you gave me the laugh of the day!

people should print out dean hall face stickers, and put them in public places. then take a photo of it and post it here. (of course afterwards remove it with the proper cleaning tools, because we dont want be vandals *cough*)

what program is this?

rocket when he finally finished SA

vandal, your last one is a masterpiece! it made me laugh really hard xD

i find it quite good xD

no but seriously, i am happy you regret this and i hope you saw that hacking becomes really dull and unchallenging and stupid after a while and destroys the experience for both, the victim AND the hacker. i saw the mod being avalable on steam, you could try that one out. i for my part used dayZ commander, because it lets you play the game with mods and such. if you got banned, you need a new key (a new steam account with a new combined operations copy)

thats the FIRST thing hat came into my mind xD -
thats completly true... i really want to see less of other countrie's weaponry... russian and civil weapons have enough variety already, and it makes it feel alot more authentic. and generally old weapons make it feel alot more apocalyptic... also, weapons like the makarov should be alot more efficient as they are now... one shot to the chest is mostly the end, and that should be reflected in the game.
-
people might hoard the good weapons, and as soon as they got the maximum number of a certain weapon type, hidden in a tent somewhere far away, they will be the only ones with these guns... people will exploit this idea, exactly like they do with vehicles, although atleast those are less easy to hide.
-
well it is realistic that there are atleast some very low amounts of certain military grade weapons... although abominations like the m-107 should leave the game completly... i dont think that completly removing certain military grade weapons such as machineguns, military shotguns, certain sniper rifles is a good idea. they should rather have huge downsides: military guns and the according ammo for it are extremly rare, they might be more cumbersome and have more weight, maintenance is really difficult, since some are not made for harsh conditions, and finding the parts to repair the gun are also more rare and come with more weight. so if someone will be lucky to find such a weapon he will probably still want to keep his AK, or his nagant, just because the ammo of these guns is not super rare, they jam and break less and maintenance is easier, and they still do their job pretty well, and are just a bit less efficient as a military grade weapon.

Food matters! [Food durability, nutrition value, and other effects]
Wep0n posted a topic in DayZ Mod Suggestions
I got some inspiration from "don't starve" and i think that different food items should have different durability and nutritional value. food should be one of the biggest concerns a player should have in the world. currently everyone has beans, and those beans hold forever. that should not be so! people should scavenge the forests and fields for berries, mushrooms, nuts, fruits, animals... and people should process/craft these items... out of berries you could make jelly, put it into a bottle to keep it durable. meat and other items can be dried/smoked, and become alot more durable and lighter to carry. people would have to maintain a fire for a longer period of time in order to smoke meat, and therefore gather wood to keep the fire going. it is very unrealistic that you find cans everywhere, since most of them were already eaten during the apocalypse. so cans/candy bars should be alot more rare to find and have a good nutritional value, aswell as infinite durability. it will be the goal for high end players to find many of these for storage. also, it is always decent to have some of them close by in case food rations get low. other food items have a certain durability, and will not hold on for too long. nuts could be stored for almost forever, while raw meat should be cooked and eaten within... lets say 2 game days, which is 8-16 hours of playtime. after a while, things could start to rot, and players could become very sick. "smelling" the food item should give information about the condition of the item, but the safest way to be sure if the item is still okay is to know how old it is. people might sell you rotten meat which still appears to be fine, and you should be careful with looting players as their food might be infected with sickness. cannibalism should be a way to get food in desperate times, but with a high risk of sickness. nutritional value should depend on the food item. so 1kg of potatoes will restore more hunger than 1kg of salad. people will of course try to find food items which are more durable aswell as a higher nutritional value per kilogram. different food items might have different effects on you. meat for example should regenerate blood faster than vegetables. hunting should be challenging and very difficult. animals should have a good AI, and run away. meat will restore alot of hunger and heal wounds quicker, but not durable at all. Knowledge also plays an important role to determine the condition of food items, aswell as be able to determine which berries/mushrooms are edible. there should also be food items like certain mushrooms which have a certain nutritional value, but cause negative side effects and should only be consumed in desperate times. of course i know that most of these features take a long time to implement, and i am not expecting it to be done early, but i defenitely think that this should be a long term goal. -
Food matters! [Food durability, nutrition value, and other effects]

by nutritional value i mean calories and proteins. when you try to survive, yur biggest concern will be to get more calories, so a candy bar will make you happier than an apple. the swiss army has "survival rations" which are made out of chocolate, nuts and other ingredients. i, as a swiss person kid you not. now i agree that candy is bad for your health in the long term, but i am pretty sure you could add some long term benefits from eating vegetables aswell. fresh fruits and vegetables give you more vitamins and should increase your immune system. some good ideas for attributes. different food items have different values. but i think things like immune system boost should rather be something long-term. eating fruits for several hours will not make you very vulnerable to sicknesses, but eating regularly some veggies/fruits should grant you a good immune system for a long while. of course people should not just eat tons of items just to gain attributes, so the benefits should be toned down, and eating too much will make you slower and cause negative effects. things like bone strenght should only affect you if you are severely malnourished for a long period of time... instead of "boost", i'd actually like to call them "attributes that you should have aslong as you eat for a longer time period" only if you start eating unhealthy/not enough, these attributes should slowly wear off. i dont want to see people eating apples before combat to get a "boost". -
the idea is cool, but i am pretty sure 90% of the notes will be like: "PENIS" or *insert penis picture here* or to the person who just killed me: *insert swear word here*
-
i agree to have more animals such as deers, but the AI needs to be vastly improved. animals need to detect survivors from very far away and run away when they see/hear something. killing an animal should be very rewarding with nutritious meat, but also be really difficult.
-
hey, i had the same idea, just instead of "chernarus army" i'd add "i want you on rocket station" that one made my day
