  1. Tired of KoS? Do something about it! Lately there have been many threads and lots of discussion on KoS. It's not getting anywhere, both sides in the argument claim they are right and both sides make up stuff that isn't necessarily true about the other just to "win the argument". The arguments generally boil down to this for the respective sides: Bandits, KoS kiddies and PvP crowd The other side doesn't know how to PvP. It's part of the game, deal with it. Crying about it isn't going to stop it from happening. Go play another game if you don't like it. Friendlies, Heroes, Medics, PvE/PvZ crowd The other side doesn't know how to PvP. They are ruining the game. Go north if you want PvP. Go play CoD/BF3, this is DayZ. I am not taking sides here in this thread. That's the core arguments about KoS from each side. I consider myself to be a Bandit/KoS "kiddie" and PvP person and i have tried to remedy the situation in the past. As much as i enjoy the cries and outrage from those i kill i also consider myself reasonable. I want them to succeed, learn from their mistakes and become better players as much as anyone else. I just don't like the friendly approach. I don't want to cuddle someone and carry them on my back hoping they learn from what i tell them. I want them to learn from experience as that (IMHO) is worth more than a thousand words. Now, to the bread and butter of this post/thread. Survivor: "I don't like KoS and i want it to go away!" Fair enough... What have you done about it so far? I haven't seen much done about it really aside from a couple of rage induced posts on these forums. I feel posting about your loss is entirely the wrong way to go as Bandits and KoS players alike (me included) will feed on your complaints, rage and tears. It has the opposite effect because the killers get recognition and a sense of achievement from your posts. I am not saying this is always the case, some may change their minds based on your complaints and think in other ways, doing less KoS as a result. But in total your postings will have the opposite effect. The one thing i haven't seen too much of is ACTION. Words is not the same thing as action mind you... What can i do to reduce KoS??? There are a number of approaches you can take and depending on how YOU want to play not all of these will be applicable to you. But at least one or two should be! What follows is an index of some possible actions you can take, after that i will go in depth on what each item on the list entails. Shoot them yourself. (PvP) Ask someone else to shoot them. (Get an assasin for the "cause") Join a group of players to kill them. (PvP with others) Become a warmonger. (Entice others to go to war against the offenders for the "cause") Fund a war. (Give out weapons, ammo and resources for others to fight a war) Become a warlord. (PvP with a group of players against the offenders but as a leader of a bigger group) Ignore it. (Do nothing at all, avoid it) 1. Shoot them yourself. (PvP) This is (IMHO) the least likely option for many reasons but if you want to retaliate on your own terms i will not deny you that and will encourage you to do so as you will learn a whole lot from the experience. The reason you are less likely to succeed is because it's you against many and you will have a hard time keeping up with them all in terms of weaponry and time. You will become the lone warrior, a guerrilla if you'd like. You will hit them when they least expect it and do as much damage to them as you possibly can. Your biggest obstacle will be that they too are like a guerrilla force. They will move (contrary to popular belief) and will blend in to the environment and you can't at a glance differentiate them from other players. Beyond that, you killing them once will have little impact since they will come back and gear back up rather quickly. They will learn from their mistakes and will have their spirits lifted as they are back in the game. They will enjoy you killing them unless you manage to kill them over and over again. Now, i am not saying it's impossible and there are many things you can do to increase the odds in your favor, should you choose to take this path. Get a good sniper rifle. (AS50 is preferred above all others due to it's low noise level, high accuracy and superior stopping power but any less will still do fine) Find a ghillie suit. (Easier said than done but without one you will be killed easily) Announce your intentions! (WHAT?!? No really, if they feel insecure you have landed the first blow, they will be paranoid all the time and will be scared to move about as freely as they did before) Pay attention to the side chat (should it exist) and gather intel on the bastards. (If someone suffers KoS, ask him for details. Get into a skype convo with the victim if you can. The less they know of what you know, the better!) Once geared up, stay near the coast but let NO ONE know where you are. (Be within walking distance of Cherno/Elektro at all times. The longer it takes you to get to them, the less likely you are to find them.) CAMP ALOT! (Your best bet is to be invisible and lie in wait for them to move about. Find the best vantage points into the twin cities and wait for them to make a move then strike) Once you engage and possibly kill one of them, don't stick around! (The last thing you want to do is let them flank you and kill you.) The one thing no list can help you with though is EXPERIENCE. You will never become good at PvP if you don't actively engage in it. If you don't have a sniper rifle and ghillie yet you are better off fighting in close quarters for a while to learn the ropes. Learn to think like them, learn to play on equal terms with them and your sniping career will be much more rewarding. When you get good at it, the KoS crowd will start to fear you. As a result, their activity will diminish as they now take more precautions before shooting an unarmed player. All of this of course depends entirely on what YOU want to do. Most "anti KoS" players are against PvP alltogether and as a result will not chose this path in the first place. 2. Ask someone else to shoot them. (Get an assasin for the "cause") This is very similar to the first option except you are not the lone warrior. Someone else is! You really don't have to do much at all, if you know something about the offenders then tell the server about it. Or... At this point you have a number of options... Go solo PvP to retaliate. (Section one in the "what to do list") Offer assistance to others wanting to kill them. (Join them on skype and help them with intel, scouting and/or equipment) (3, 4 and 5 on the "todo list") Entice others to join the "cause". (Become a warmonger, item 4 on the "todo list") Do nothing more, just tell the details and move on. The last thing you want to do here is engage in a long conversation with them about how wrong it is to KoS. Just tell the details and ask for assistance or retaliation from others. Be mature about it and others will take you seriously. (assuming they trust your intel) 3. Join a group of players to kill them. (PvP with others) This is obviously based on trust for all involved. Normally you should seek to team up with other "less armed" players and form a counter squad. You will need good communication (Skype, Teamspeak etc) with the others in the group or you are bound to fail before you start. Unlike the solo PvP option, you will focus on sheer force. Grab whatever weapons you can come by and rely on intel from others. Strike the bastards down and split up or stay together. Some things you can do as a group: Have a decoy to lure attention away from the rest of the group. (Make noise to lure the bastards in) Use a target dummy that will be fired upon. (The longer he survives the better, he needs to know how to dodge bullets! The rest of the group will flank or return fire) Use scouts that survey the area and provide intel as well as possible cover fire. (should he have a sniper rifle etc) Cover larger areas in shorter timeframes as well as lock down certain regions. Some things to consider: Bad communications are a recipe for distaster. ("Where are you?" ... "I don't know." ... "Is that you?" ... "I am near a house" ... "But this guy is in a house" ... "Where?" ... "I don't know, i am going to shoot him!" ... "Wait, i am in a house now" ... "What weapon did you have?" ... "Uhh, a rifle..." ... "This guy has an AK, i am shooting now" ... *bang bang* ... "Aaaah, someone is shooting me from the school" ... "I am in the school!" ... "I am shooting back" ... "No, that's me!" ... "But he is shooting me?!?" ... "Ok?" ... "Oh well, i am dead anyways.") Good communications can have great results. ("I am on the school roof" ... "Ok, i am at the hospital" ... ... "I see zombies running to the east" ... "Ok, i will get on the hospital roof" ... "The zombies are running to the store" ... "I am on the hospital roof now, looking at the store entrance" ... "I see a guy in the store, he has a bandit skin" ... "Good, what weapon does he have?" ... "I can't tell, he is running around too much" ... "Ok, keep an eye on him." ... "He exited through the back of the store" ... "I see more zombies running to the west. They are moving towards the school." ... "Ok, the bandit is running into the school now too!" ... "I see another player, he is unarmed in survivor clothes and going into the school!" ... *RATATATA* ... "Shots from the school, sounded like an AK74" ... "Ok, keep watch!" ... "I see the bandit, he is moving to the second floor. The other guy is dead!" ... "Shoot the bandit if you can" ... "Taking the shot." ... *BAM* ... "He is dead! I'll cover you while you take his stuff. Don't forget to bury the bastard!") Always keep track of each other, the moment you don't know where the others are situations can arise where you have to do needless talking to confirm each others locations. Always inform the rest of the group what you are doing and where you are going and do it for every re-positioning you do. Share everything! Got spare food? Divide it among the group induvidials. Having to go back to another player to feed him is only going to increase the chance of you being spotted and will take extra needless time. Have clear roles, "I am the sniper", "I am the looter", "We are the assault team", "I am the coordinator", "I don't know this game that well", "I am hungry", "I am the intelligence officer", "I am the driver". Have clear goals... "We are going to Cherno to look for KoS bastards." ... "When we get there we will take up positions on the roofs while the looters gather food and medical supplies." ... "We will all meet up in the farm north of Cherno if we need to retreat or we are moving out". Nobody is saying playing as a group is easy in PvP. You learn through experience and your targets are likely to have more experience than you. Your ultimate goal is to make life HELL for them. The more they have to worry about you, the less time they will spend shooting unarmed players. Just like with solo PvP, this isn't for everyone. There are other options! 4. Become a warmonger. (Entice others to go to war against the offenders for the "cause") Another one of those "easy approaches" as you don't have to do anything really. Just encourage others to fight the fight for you while you go about doing your own thing. I can't really say much else about it. I have done it myself, AGAINST MYSELF. So here's a little story about what happened: So yes, being the warmonger can be surprisingly effective! And it should be right up you complainers alley! 5. Fund a war. (Give out weapons, ammo and resources for others to fight a war) If you are a lone wolf who does nothing but farm gear every day to store it in tents scattered around the map then this option is perfect for you! What are you going to do with all that gear anyways? It's just sitting in tents waiting for some bandit to come and collect and destroy the rest anyways. Gather weapons, gear and vehicles that you give to others who are fighting the war on KoS for you. Strength in numbers is one thing, being well supplied is a whole other. If you provide your services to the men and women on the ground so they can focus on killing bandits then you are a vital asset to the "cause". If there is one thing a KoS player hates it's snipers. So give out sniper rifles to the good guys and watch the KoS mentality shatter as they will feel they are being watched at all times by the counter KoS, well equipped players everywhere. 6. Become a warlord. (PvP with a group of players against the offenders but as a leader of a bigger group) Dream on... ... ... Seriously though, if you manage to get the server under your control against KoS i am going to join that server right away just for the challenge. A would love for you to succeed and maybe one day someone will. And i would love to be the target on a server like this. Hunted by everyone everywhere. 7. Ignore it. (Do nothing at all, avoid it) By far the laziest approach and the least effective... But for you it may work best, who knows? What you need to do is stay away from all possible player contact. Play on empty servers, stay far into the wilderness. Leave no trace of your existence and keep your mouth shut. If you see another player press ESC -> ALT+F4 and go on another server for the day. Rage quit as you realize you are not having any fun at all. It was bound to happen later anyways as DayZ is not for you. ---------------------------------- Thanks for reading!
  2. First time i have thought about the cyrillic typeset and i like that idea. But since i also favor some of the other names i will abstain from voting. (You should have made a multiple choice poll.)

    Ram disks?

The only benefits you will see is faster loading times and possibly less frame drops as new resources are being loaded. (read, copied from one section of your memory to another) Overall you will not see an FPS gain as that is highly dependent on your CPU / GPU performance. So at best, you will have less stuttering as you move about and new resources are being loaded into memory.

    Survey results are in!

This is how i would have phrased the questions... Overall, how do you feel about the naming convention of new feed items in DayZ? I like them. I dislike them. I am indifferent to them. (Neither like nor hate them) I don't know. Have you seen any gameplay issues being brought on by these names? (multiple choice) The names are unprofessional. The names look bad for DayZs reputation. The names break immersion for me. The names are good but could be better. I see nothing wrong with the item names. I would like to see more items with similar names. I am indifferent to them. (I don't care) I don't know. Other. (comment) Do you think the developers have "lost touch" with the community? Yes. Yes, to some degree. No. No, they have improved. I don't care. I don't know. After these three questions i would also give an option to rate the performance of DayZ overall... On a scale from 1 to 5 (1 being very bad, 3 being Neutral, neither good nor bad and 5 being very good) how would you rate the development of DayZ: Prior to 1.7.5 (Rocket in development) 1 (Very bad) 2 3 (Neutral, average, neither good nor bad) 4 5 (Very good) Post 1.7.5 (R4Z0R in development) 1 (Very bad) 2 3 (Neutral, average, neither good nor bad) 4 5 (Very good) ------ And just for kicks, here are my votes: Indifferent. The names are good but could be better, i would like to see more items with similar names. No. 4. 4.

Tired of KoS? Do something about it!

You don't know what KoS stands for do you? Kill on Sight - What players do whenever they see someone else. I am not encouraging KoS. I am encouraging people to hunt those that do KoS and leave everyone else alone. That is not KoS, that is killing a subset of players that are doing something you don't like. Adding to that, i am not talking about the occasional KoS incident that happens because no other options are available to the agressor. You know, when they meet suddenly in a narrow doorway and they by reaction kill the other player because they have no time to react differently. I am talking about those that go out of their way to kill other players on sight no matter what. Which this other person touches on... Read the next quote. I wholeheartedly agree with your definitions. I am a player killer, my goal is to kill players on sight and i am actively hunting them no matter where they are or what they are doing. KoS is a narrow term as you can kill players on sight if you happen to come across them but try to avoid it and you can KoS with intent. That said, a bandit doesn't necessarily have to let another player live. A bandit may be looking for a fast way to gear up and if he has a makarov and is alone he has no real leverage. He will sneak up on another player and kill him and take his gear. What makes a bandit not be a bandit anymore is when he kills another player but doesn't even try to loot the corpse. Now, here is where i disagree. A playerkiller doesn't necessarily degrade from gameplay. It just adds more risk to moving about, especially in the big cities. If you feel DayZ is too easy in the Zombie department you may just welcome the fact that there are player killers out there giving you an added layer of risk to your reward. Because as you say, DayZ would not be fun without PvP. Especially if you think the zombies are a joke and not a threat to you at all. And a playerkiller is obviously not going to get any love from other players. He is the definition of a really bad guy and as such will add an element to the game that allows for some cosplay. You have the murderer and you have the CSI and Police to hunt him down. It's good vs evil and it's up to every player to participate in this scenario. (or not) Without it DayZ would be at a loss as it would detract from the possible number of professions one can have. Embrace it, do something about it and learn that DayZ isn't just robbers, farming and helping newbs. It's a war between rivaling factions and playerkillers are a faction of their own.
  6. They will have another engine to run scripts on. IIRC that's Java and even .dll binaries.

    Survey results are in!

I too feel the options are biased and the poll isn't really representative of the playerbase. Where was this posted? How did players find this poll? Some people hang around on other parts of the internet based on their personal preferences. Those that generally don't care about the changes are not likely to be vocal on the matter in the first place. Thus your results are skewed.

Tired of KoS? Do something about it!

Then you stopped reading before you realized if i had any bias in my post it's surely not going to be with the KoS haters. I KoS and had you kept on reading you wouldn't have made such an ill informed and non constructive post. What arguments haven't i listed that are relevant? I can always update the list you know.

Tired of KoS? Do something about it!

So you are the "Do nothing about it" type and will bitch and moan on the forums then? EDIT: mind you, I am not telling you to KoS. I am telling you to go after those that do KoS. It's very different.
  10. Have you waited at least 5 minutes? I have read that if you log off unconscious you will stay unconscious when you log back on for a minimum of 5 minutes. That said, you should not be able to access your gear when unconscious. So i guess you H4XX0RS! BURN THE WITCH!

    KoS, an examination

For crying out loud... That's like saying DayZ is forcing a certain playstyle on people because there are zombies in the game. If you got killed by zombies (be it glitch or no glitch) you wouldn't rage on sidechat too much about it. You know it was your fault, you accept it and you learn from it right? Why can't players come to realize that there are more threats in the game besides zombies? How come a zombie gets away with murder that easily but a player doesn't? I will give you this much though. I too wish there was less KoS, especially on unarmed players. I wish there where more players who sought battles, who would punish me and everybody else for killing an unarmed player as their mission. But that's not going to happen and for one solid reason (IMHO) and that is most players just don't want to do PvP against other well armed players because it's a "risk" to them. Another side reason (as i have touched on many times) is that most players just don't know how to PvP to begin with and it doesn't matter if they have a makarov or an AS50 or even a helicopter... They will not become good at PvP if all they do all day long is hang out in the middle of nowhere on empty servers playing the farm gear and vehicles game. Plain and simple then, the prominent reason you get KoS with no gear is because you are too god damn bad to be allowed to live on. And most of these people that I have let go i have never seen again because they spend every minute of every day out in the middle of nowhere collecting gear and setting up tents and take up server bandwidth and performance playing farming simulator in DayZ. You know as well as i do that when the community starts making no-PvP servers they will be filled with players who are too damn lazy to learn from their mistakes and then there will be more servers like this to allow more of these carebears to fit on them. And the other servers will become less populated as a result so now more players who are indifferent to the PvP aspects of DayZ will join the now full servers just to have other players around. Finally the community have succeeded in killing DayZ as most players get bored and move on. Especially those that complained the most about KoS.

    DayZ 1.7.6.1 Bug List

Well, my RPT is 2 Megs so i wont post that right now, to be fair it's full of duplicate lines as well and most are similar to this: We where playing in AWA whitlisted servers with 40 to 55 players and it took about 5 minutes after server restart for the server to desync hard. Prior to this desync it was working quite ok. We then switched to another AWA server with 20 players and it too started desyncing but after 30 minutes or so. Once the servers where bogged down they stopped working completely and players stood on the spot and no chat messages came through. Unable to loot and zombies where mostly being daft and not reacting to anything.

    DayZ 1.7.6.1 Bug List

Yes, that's for the server admins to set up. They are using old script filters on a new DayZ version. That has nothing to do with DayZ code and everything to do with their serverside battleye setup.

    Is DayZ really an alpha?

No, it's not a "carte blanche" for developers. They are still adding assets and code to make the DayZ mod a fuller experience than it currently is. For instance, in 1.7.6 you now get arrow quivers for the crossbow. That is something that has been missing so far and adding those things still makes the alpha stage valid. The DayZ mod isn't finished yet and there are still oodles of stuff to add and refine upon before going into Beta. That said, DayZ isn't following a traditional game development cycle. On top of that it's a community project now, people work on it in their spare time and if you feel you have something to contribute then join the team. No player has the right to expect or demand anything from it. As far as I am concerned they can drop development of the DayZ mod at any time and nobody has the rights to complain about it. "Want a refund?" That's what it boils down to, not a single dime has been spent on DayZ from the playerbase so far. What the players may have bought is ArmA 2: CO and that is a whole different purchase. As such, developers are in no obligation to do anything at all and complaining about lack of features or the mod being in Alpha will only detract from the time they spent making the mod FOR FREE for you and all DayZ players.

    DayZ Mod 1.7.6 Update

This happened before 1.7.5.1 and in 1.7.5.1 as well. The problem is Zombies get stuck in a certain place after so many shots. You can try it out by having two other players in a triangle around the zombies. First guy shoots, zombies go towards him. Second guy shoots, zombies go towards him. You shoot, zombies may go to you or they may not. Keep cycling like this and you will eventually find that all zombies get stuck and ignores any subsequent shots fired. Another thing you can do is use direct chat VON to draw zombies to you. This will work ONCE per zombie, you can't maneuver them around any more with VON after that. Then you have player corpses, once a zombie is standing next to a player corpse they will not leave that corpse for any reason. Finally, given enough time. Zombies will start to ignore you completely. At this point you can stand in front of them and take a piss and they will do nothing at all until you come within attacking range of them. It all boils down to how long that zombie has been around and how many times it has changed targets. In some cases a zombie will never release it's target no matter how hard you try to shake it (walking in bushes, around corners, trying to draw aggro away from you using another player) and the only way to get rid of it is to force it to commit suicide, kill it or make it despawn (leave the area in a vehicle etc).

    Is DayZ really an alpha?

Well yes since there hasn't been a code freeze yet. Alpha A game/mod project has key functionality implemented and is feature complete. It's playable but still ridden with bugs and is still being shaped based on testing and feedback. New assets are added and removed to balance the gameplay. Game mechanics are being fine tuned to make the game/mod become what the developers envision it to be. Alpha stage usually occurs up to ten months before Beta but that is no guarantee. Code freeze At this stage, the developers are happy with the overall balance of the game/mod and have implemented all the features they want to have in the game/mod. No more code is being added and the project goes from Alpha to Beta stage where only bugs are fixed. Beta The testing and finalizing stage. Here, all known bugs are being fixed. Nothing is added or changed drastically and the only real changes are those where one solution which is buggy is replaced with a less buggy solution which may alter game play to some extent. At this stage, the game/mod is playable and ready for release already and any bug fixes are there to finish the product. Release The game/mod is finished and generally free of bugs. This is the final stage of the game. Anything done to the game past this point is to be considered an addon. DLC, Expansion or likewise and all are based off the original release. Patches and hotfixes to the release may still be shipped to fix some bugs that wasn't detected/fixed during the beta stage. ----------- Lets face it, as long as the DayZ mod is still being added to (new features, new weapons, new assets etc) it will stay in Alpha. The question you should ask yourself is "Am i happy with all the features and assets that the DayZ mod has to offer?" If your answer is anything resembling a no or maybe then you should just take a seat and wait like everybody else. Finally, the DayZ mod is left in the hands of the community. As such, the DayZ mod will deviate from the SA in many regards and become a separate entity from DayZ SA. DayZ SA is in it's "first playable" stage and is being tested for an alpha release. That is, The SA isn't really playable yet and as such would make no sense to be released as an Alpha yet. When it's ready to be released it will be in Alpha and you will run into as many bugs as you have throughout the mod history and as many balancing changes and new assets as well. The reason they made the standalone is because they hit an impassible restriction with the ArmA 2 engine and decided to use a newer, customized engine to ensure they could reach the vision that Rocket has for DayZ in alpha. And that may also be the reason the DayZ mod has been in alpha for so long, struggling to implement features that couldn't with the A2 engine.

    KoS, an examination

So just because there are people that KoS that means there is no way to do other things in DayZ? ... BITCH, PLEASE... I have been around DayZ long enough to know there are more than one way to play the game. I have tried them all and (just like so many others) i have come to the conclusion that PvP is the most challenging aspect of DayZ. And before you go all apeshit and start judging my skill levels based on what gear the targets are carrying let me tell you that it rarely matters what gear people carry. If they field Ghillie suits and AS50's in a group of 6 it doesn't make them good at PvP. What makes players good at PvP is being exposed to it so they learn through experience. Lately i have seen a bunch of idiots that never learn... They run straight down the main street in Elektro and go from Fire station to church, hospital, school and store without a care in the world. Whenever i shoot them they bitch and moan and call me a looser who lacks the skill to shoot the "elites" up at NWAF. But then, when i go to NWAF and kill the "elites" up there they in turn bitch and moan about me killing them instead of robbing them. ... At which point i hold up people at gunpoint but they either turn and try to shoot their way out or they ignore or doesn't pay attention and i am forced to shoot them either way... AAANNNND.... THEY CRY. The only conclusion that can be made from that is people really don't want to be shot at period, they want a no risk experience so they can gather all the gear in the world and hide a few hundred tents in the wilderness along with all the cars that exist on the map. For what? To me it seems most players just don't get DayZ. It's as much PvE as it's PvP and if you focus on one thing only you are going to have a really hard time in DayZ. And players have the tenacity to call us stupid kids who should go play CoD when in fact it's the other way around... Except they should go play Farmville or Farming Simulator 2013 because all they want is to gather more and more resources. KoS is the product of many generations (in game terms) of skilless PvP. There are no real threats to those who have the PvP skills so they just about shoot anything that moves out of boredom. DayZ used to be so much more. You had squad on squad battles raging for weeks. People went out of their way to find each other and kill each other over some quarrel with some helicopter or looted/destroyed camp. Nowadays you have a whole bunch of crying little babies who wants to lonewolf and farm gear and vehicles all day long without interaction with other players and a few who simply camp the coast looking for anyone to shoot at period. This thread is nothing more than a nest full of ignorant skilless players who simply can't be arsed to learn how to defend themselves from other players. Learn to PvP or suffer death time and time again until you rage quit.

    KoS, an examination

No it doesn't... You still have to fire up ArmA 2 (Core 1), travel the map (Core 2), Go to item spawn points (Mod 1) to find stuff, Avoid zombies around said spawn point (Mod 2), Depending on if you survive the first 30 minutes or so you need to eat and drink (Mod 3), If you want to get around the map quickly you may want a vehicle (Mod 4), to kill other players you need a weapon (Mod 5), your actions are affected by the last point in the list. If you want to be a hero then don't PvP! (Mod 6) That's EVERYTHING in DayZ covered by PvP. Arguably you can do PvP without using vehicles though. But then again, if survival is your cup of tea then you can do without mod points 2, 4, 5 and 6 completely... To just survive you don't need anything at all with you. You can run into a town, grab food and drinks and run out again without being hit once by a zombie or other player. Then you can watch trees grow while you eat and drink once every hour or so. Now who is playing the wrong game?

You will not last in DayZ. Cut your losses and stick to solitaire.

    KoS, an examination

The problem is people thinking there is a problem with KoS to begin with. Rockets vision on the mod is exactly this, people will do what they WANT to do. Not what HE or anyone else wants them to do. DayZ is a game in it's own in this manner and it's built on another game that follows this principle too. ArmA 2 doesn't force you to play a certain way, the map editor and scripting engine allows you do make whatever you want of it. (as long as the hardware and engine can keep up of course) Let's look at what DayZ actually is made of: The Core The ArmA 2 engine, featuring all the simulation necessary for a military simulator with ballistics, weather, day/night cycle, scripting engine and much more. Chernarus, the map provided by the ArmA 2 game. A 225km² area with varying terrain. Not a product of DayZ but a component available from ArmA 2. (And there are more maps available, including community made ones) The Mod On the above mentioned map you define a list of buildings where certain items may be created. The buildings object ID is all that is needed in this listing and from there the game will populate the particular building with items based on a weighted loot table. There is a certain chance items will be created and there is a certain chance that each item created will be of a certain type. In essence, you populate the map with items of various rarity and players will naturally go look for better items as they do in any game that has loot. This in it's own is a feature enough to keep players occupied for quite some time. Add enemies, in this case Zombies. Similar to items spawning, a certain number of Zeds are spawned in/near buildings where items may be present. The hardest part of DayZ development as these Zombies will shape the base difficulty of the mod in all aspects. Making them behave like Zombies and keep them from passing through walls and solid objects is hard enough. Adding to that, there is no highly developed AI for a Zombie entity and a simple animal AI has been borrowed and developed upon. ArmA 2 soldier AI is arguably quite a bit smarter but they cannot be used for this application for many reasons. Including performance. Add hunger, thirst, status effects and illness. Drive players to visit zombie infested places to gather food and drink as well as medical supplies. In the case of medical supplies, they are only available at the coast to ensure players occasionally need to go to certain "hot spots" and thus face interacting with other players. Add vehicles with a "crafting system" allowing players to fix them and utilize them to get around the HUGE map faster. Add weapons in the loot tables and balance the weapons to be effective vs zombies and effective vs other players. Some are better at killing the horde and others are better against players. Use the "humanity system" to differentiate players through their interactions with the game visually. That's it for DayZ. Very short and simple really and the reason it's grown to such a huge success without any advertising. There are no rules (besides cheating ofc) and your goal or "end game" is who stays alive the longest. Thus, any problems are purely artificial and caused by players expecting the game to be something it isn't. It's a sandbox and everybody plays in that sandbox on equal terms. When players complain about zombies being glitchy it's not a game breaking flaw. You learn to survive even with glitchy zombies, maybe that is part of the difficulty in the game. Zombies are not just zombies, they are glitchy zombies and you just learn to deal with it as you would dealing with zombies that can take a tank shell to the face and survive. Finally, players complaining about KoS... It's not a problem for the mod, it's a problem in the playerbase itself as players expect to be able to farm loot in complete security until they get bored and give up DayZ. There is no problem with KoS, it's the way the mod is designed to work and you either learn to deal with it (learn to PvP) or you suffer from it as anyone else.

    New Combat Roll Animation

I have the same issue that boneboys has. I have remapped my keys extensively and i can't do the sprint and step over to make a combat roll. I am sure it's due to crappy input coding (requiring the use of the V key which i have remapped) and being forced to use the default bind to do the animation means i won't use the animation and instead ridicule the coder.

    Worst weapon in DAYZ?

Tin cans and whiskey bottles. ... YES, they are weapons too! EDIT: However, i use those for shits and giggles. So the weapon i never use is still the crowbar.

Didn't realise food and water was that important

Congratulations, you learned something today. Now you only have about a thousand other things to learn! And considering how daft one must be to not realize the blinking icons and watching the blood drop before he dies i would say you will die from every of the thousand lessons you still have to learn.

    Ethics of the common player

Imagine a server where killing an unarmed player was a bannable offense. If there was such a server i would join it with one purpose in mind. To cause as much damage as i possibly can without having a weapon. You see, you don't need a weapon to survive in DayZ. And you don't need a weapon to be dangerous to other players. You don't need a weapon to fix vehicles, you don't need a weapon to drive them. I would steal vehicles from other players and if they shot me then i would report them for killing unarmed players and have them banned. (The ultimate kill?) ... NO! DayZ is a dark place. It's a sandbox. You are free to do whatever you want and that does indeed include KoS and spawn camping. I have no issues with being shot at 1 minute after i spawn. I even thrive in that environment. I know someone might be out to kill me the moment i spawn so i take the proper precautions and make a proper effort instead of assuming i will not be a target until i carry a weapon of worth. I have told this story elsewhere but i will tell it here as well. --- I spawned in Drakon, 500 meters east of Elektro and made my way into town. Upon reaching the school and entering it (my first destination, 2-3 minutes alive) i came face to face with another player who was fielding a Lee Enfield. I promptly do a 180 and run out the door at which point the other player shoots but misses. From here on out he decides to hunt me down as i move erratically north behind the couple of houses between the school and power station. Even with this erratic movements i made he manages to land a shot in my back. I know very well i don't have time to bandage myself and he is too close to me to shake off so i turn back around and am now running circles around him. He empties one of his mags but doesn't manage to hit me as i do the death dance around him, all while bleeding like a stuck pig. He runs to the store to avoid the zombies and i keep following him. Once inside the store he takes position behind the counter and i block his path while changing positions as much as i possibly can to avoid getting hit. Zombies enter through the back door and starts hitting him, now he really panics and empties his last clip and then somehow manages to squeeze past me, running out the front door of the store. I noticed as i entered the store earlier that a winchester lay on the floor of the store. I use this brief moment of safety to pick it up and now the hunter becomes the hunted. He makes it as far as back to the school before i break his leg and pop another 3 rounds into his spine. I bandage, have nearly zero blood left and manages to find some food and drink and leave the area to meet up with my friends. That character survived for 16 days after that. My point is, if you can't deal with being shot at as an unarmed player then you will continue dying and the only way to survive is to adapt and overcome the hurdles. If you can't survive being shot at with a Lee Enfield what makes you think you would survive being shot at by any other player anywhere else? DayZ is a dark place and your survival is entirely based on your abilities to adapt and overcome all obstacles that will face you. Including other players who will shoot at you the moment they see you! ... On a side note, i have killed many other players who had better gear than myself. I have made combacks against ghillied AS50 snipers using nothing more than a makarov. It is my most effective way to gear back up after getting killed. I have survived encounters with groups of players fielding a DMR, MK48, M249 SAW and M16 running away from them erratically as they empty magazine after magazine, clip after clip and box after box of munitions at me. The only times i die is when i am not paying attention and doing stupid noob mistakes i shouldn't make. And you will find that surviving KoS players and spawn killers will become much less of a problem when you learn to PvP.
