Just to wrap this up. If anyone else can't use steam overlay with DAYZ alpha, the problem was with windows 7 User Account Control(UAC). Disabling this solved the problem for me.

I have it enabled. It's very strange. Other games I can Shift+tab and it pops right up. Dayz never.

Why would anyone use a third party map in this game like Dayzdb, etc.? Don't cheat yourself. Learn to like being lost.

Somewhere on the coast looting small homes. Some guy ran up to me and asked if I had Skype in text chat. I said no and he switched to direct comm. I had a firemans axe (absolutely awesome melee btw) he had nothing. We looted for a bit together and then we separated. It was at night and he informed me he used gamma cheats to see. I considered axing him on the spot, but didn't want that to be my first interaction in game.

I cannot read or write notes. Am I doing something wrong? I right click the page and click 'read note', nothing.

Also try to set your OS display/text size from large to medium. This fixed it for me completely.

No missions, no NPCs. Hopefully it stays this way.

Sometimes I log into a night server and it's black and white but I can see. Almost like a photo negative. In others it's pitch black and I need a flashlight to see. I don't mess with gamma to cheat and prefer the pitch black/flashlight needed. But again, some servers are black and white but I can see. Am I missing something?

Your 'tldr' is in fact too long to read lol. I'm with you though. Once everyone figures out what spawns where an element will be lost. If they could randomize spawn locations every month or so that might help.

I have seen radios on tabletops in some houses but am unable to take them. Are they in game yet or am I trying to loot a permanent object?

I've been playing for eight hours total. In that eight hours I had found zero guns, and was forced to eat rotten fruit to combat starvation since I had no way to open canned foods. I wondered aimlessly through the woods and stumbled upon an airfield where I found an M4 and a ten round clip. This is why I like this game. In my opinion if you use online maps or loot exploitation like mentioned in this thread you are cheating yourself and will not be playing this game for too long. Which is fine with me.

Found the fix for this issue. Adjust your OS text/display size from large to medium. GOOD TO GO

I found myself running past buildings to get to the church in town last night. haha And the hospital interior is awesome at night with a flashlight. Blood smears, overturned desk and chairs. AWESOME
