High populated servers cause more lag because they spawn in more zombies - zombies are the real problem in the DayZ mod as they're terribly optimised. Use Ramdisk. It keeps the game nice and steady, with no judders and smooths out your frame rates - even boosting them by 10-15 frames or more on most occasions. Check YouTube for tutorials on using it with DayZ.

Otters are fanboys of fish though.

How do you make travel more interesting in Day Z
Mr Mouse replied to zqpmxn's topic in New Player Discussion
No fast travel. It's not a popular MMO, or Fallout 3/New Vegas. The game is supposed to be about realism and scavenging. If zombies attacked the world and people drove far away in their various vehicles, then you would have to walk - so walk you must. Either learn to move those lazy legs, or look for another game my friend. Standalone will however address some of these issues. Base building, increased scavenging and a few more hotspots/redesigned towns/swamps - more variety. You will however, still need to walk vast distances across the map until you get friends with cars who are willing to pick you up. How players will play the game upon release remains to be seen however. Will people be friendly and offer help such as transport, or will everyone shoot on sight? I hope for the prior. -
Still struggling... (ok, HELP!)
Mr Mouse replied to George-Smiley's topic in DayZ Mod Troubleshooting
I'm thinking, perhaps, it's the way you make a new paragraph after every sentence. It's weird when you do it because it's not a correct way of structuring sentences. You could combine all the sentences together, as you haven't actually changed subject yet. Three to six sentences per paragraph is a fair rule to follow when writing on-line (differs from written text - readability issues). But anyway, it's your way of writing and at least it's not full of text-talk. :) -
Restricted or low data usage is mainly used for simply web browsing and the odd YouTube video stream here and there. Online gaming and low bandiwdth/data packages don't and shouldn't go together.

Rocket, don't worry about certain individuals trying to rush you. Most people I've spoken to with at least half a brain understand the need to release the game when it's ready, and not sooner. A great game is far more important than a rushed version - something to last and capture the masses, instead of something that looks rushed and disappoints. Take your time and the game will certainly show it. Looks great now by the way!

What's up with people wanting to find No PvP servers?
Mr Mouse replied to recklesspanz's topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
The way the standalone is going, where you can build bases, collect new clothes and make diaries for your character, it's certainly very much a role-playing type of experience, and therefore it's no wonder why some people like to play the game as a PvE experience, including not being shot at. Some might want the social aspect of DayZ, where they set-up camps and enjoy the 'living experience'. People may frown, but it's what others enjoy and who are you to say otherwise; people buy games for various reasons, so let them play how they would like. The same can and will be said for the DayZ Standalone. There will be some hell-bent on roaming the land killing people, and others who frown on this, instead enjoy the salvaging and scavenging lifestyle, where they simply live and exist as an avatar. -
Yeah something's going wrong somewhere. I have an old dual core with 4gb ram and a much older graphics card, and I get 40fps almost constantly. Not amazing by any means, but certainly decent for such an old computer. Arma2 and Dayz is a weird beast that enjoys a great and quick hard drive. Have you tried using Ramdisk? The speeds from the virtual hard drive are better than most/anything on the market, and many people see on average a 15+ fps boost, while also removing any shakes and 'judderyness'.

Anyone know what the stanalone system requirements may be?
Mr Mouse replied to Ryan45ty's topic in New Player Discussion
Arma 2 and DayZ 'consume' totally different processing power. Sorry to burst your bubble. -
I like how it seems that there will be different zombies with differing injures, that will hopefully effect the speed at which they move. Currently all zombies run at the same speed, if somewhat sporadically, so this change alone could potentially catch you off guard when in game as one undead soul darts at you from around the corner. Time to get swarmed!

Spam more please!

No age limit - everyone should have a mental maturity examination when purchasing games, to see if you're actually able to play the game properly.

Run both Arma 2 and Operation Arrowhead to main menu and exit straight away. No need to actually play either game. Then fire up DayZCommander, go to 'Install/Update', update Arma 2 and install the latest DayZ mod version. Double click a server and play. Happy times.

Only played new version for about an hour but impressed with new zombies in as much as you don't have to be as sneaky; in the past it was very much like they had super sight or something similar. I've wandered in and amongst them with no aggro at all. I also like how a few bullet shots, or even throwing empty glass bottles will eventually make loads of zombies swarm on an area. I did a few tests with empty whiskey bottles earlier and about fifteen zombies came to the location. I also had around twenty zombies swarm my location when I fired off five or so Winchester shots. On the flip-side to this is that you can loose them better when running through houses and other architecture. Not really played it that much, but the zombie changes have been improvements to me, except for the obvious walking and attacking through walls nonsense that we all encounter.

I'm actually a mouse with intellect far greater than that of an average human. Therefore I can use a computer with ease.

Devblog update: Where is the Standalone?
Mr Mouse replied to rocket's topic in Mod Announcements & Info
Here's something for the community to ponder. If a zombie managed to find themselves in the ocean after stumbling around, they wouldn't drown because they are dead, right? Or do zombies still breathe even though their lungs are wrecked? Anyway, they would keep walking (and sinking) to the bottom of the ocean. Predatory sea creature would probably try to eat them, as they would naturally see them as food - or a zombie would try to eat them instead, therefore perhaps infecting...a shark. If the shark ate a zombie, it would be passed to it's stomach by digestive transit, but a fan of The Walking Dead TV show knows that a severed head still snaps and bites, therefore the stomach of the shark would be ripped open and the shark would thus be infected (the same would happen if the shark was attacked without zombie digestion taking place). You'd then have zombified sharks; perhaps the most lethal thing in the ocean, with a far greater increase in blood lust. Zombiefied sharks folks; be very afraid. -
Devblog update: Where is the Standalone?
Mr Mouse replied to rocket's topic in Mod Announcements & Info
Having been an MMORPG gamer for many years (stopped playing since becoming disillusioned with the genre), if there's one phrase I hate, then it's "end game." It frustrates me and has generally appeared from games such as World of Warcraft, where little kids need an end goal to aim for, or a place that they can show off their amazing armor. Not all games need a flippin' end game. This mentality really needs to change. Linear games have end games, as you play from start to finish. Sandbox type games, that try to depict realism, shouldn't really have an end game, as it's left to your own imagination as to what you do, even if developers get cries of "well, what's the point in playing?!" Stop catering to the people who need to be hand fed everything, with a lovely carrot sticking out in front. -
Devblog update: Where is the Standalone?
Mr Mouse replied to rocket's topic in Mod Announcements & Info
Like any beta test, it should include a good range of computers, from low to high range, in order to test stability and performance optimization. I'm guessing this is the case here, but is anyone participating in the beta (who have already been offered the chance) that has a low range computer? I'd be very interested in the performance levels. Rocket did suggest that performance issues would be tweaked far better three months(?) in, I believe, but still interested regardless. -
Devblog update: Where is the Standalone?
Mr Mouse replied to rocket's topic in Mod Announcements & Info
I agree with you entirely. They can develop the game and go for as much realism as possible in my opinion, and that includes the difficulty. -
At around 8:39 minutes to 8:51 minutes, was someone playing table tennis while attending the interview?

Devblog update: Where is the Standalone?
Mr Mouse replied to rocket's topic in Mod Announcements & Info
Great news, but the major aspect I'm waiting to hear about, which will only come through the closed beta testing, is what specifications are needed to run the game? We all know how terrible DayZ is to play, performance wise. Hopefully this information comes out within closed beta, as it's an announcement that will save me £300-500 in upgrades, or not. Fantastic news however! :) -
It's a tough one, I admit. It's far easier to shoot on sight with no questions asked, but as you've pointed out, this sort of behaviour isn't healthy as it creates paranoia throughout the community. It's a mentality thing more than anything. If people don't trust one another then you're never going to get random groups forming on game, which is sad, as they are sometimes the most refreshing thing for new players to experience. I generally give people the benefit of the doubt, but I know not to trust anyone. When gear paranoia kicks in however, people start acting far differently than they would if they were newly spawned.

That's an opinion, not a truth. I'm not hostile, for example.

They'll continue to be developed but will probably divert at different tangents. You can do different things with one and different things with the other, due to the limitations and restrictions that are in place, especially within the DayZ mod. Rocket once spoke of designing 'underground' in DayZ standalone, planning out instances that wouldn't be as harsh on resources, and where people could set up instanced camps/missions etc. I don't think you'll see that in the mod any time soon, for example. Also, as Rocket has said, and as you can imagine, their time and effort will be solely devoted to the standalone upon release, in order to get it stable and brilliant. Updates will still be released for the mod, but their attention will be mainly fixed on standalone updates and content. A mod is a mod, whereas a standalone game deserves far more work and attention. Everyone should really understand and accept that.
