What do you think of weapon rarity
Areos (DayZ) replied to liquidpeaches's topic in General Discussion
With the significantly increased number of military installations across the map, including military barracks that were once exclusive to NW airfield, I'd find it acceptable if military-quality weaponry had a reduced spawn rate as opposed to the DayZ mod. However, civilian weapons shouldn't be some obscure phenomena. That doesn't mean that every barn ever has to house a weapon, but when players immediately run to airfields over cities and towns because finding an assault rifle is easier than finding a Winchester, there is a fundamental issue in play. -
less M4s in a week... will everyone make a run on them?
Areos (DayZ) replied to unicornsmustdie's topic in General Discussion
I'm certain the Mosin 9130 will be the more popular choice because of its sheer effectiveness verse player targets. The M4A1 is better at mass zombie killing, but it's not like zombies are even remotely a threat at this time. -
Because this wouldn't become incredibly tedious after the second time.

I always imagined the zoom function was more along the lines of the player squinting in order to see something in the distance better. Obviously you're not actually zooming in your vision at all. I can see the zoom feature coming back when optics are utilized on the weapon, such as how the long range scope currently works. Without the zoom function, these optics end up being detrimental due to the reduced peripheral vision of the area surrounding what you're aiming at. Being allowed to "squint" while using these optics will offset the drawback of having reduced peripheral vision in comparison to using the superior backup iron sights.

Vehicle overhaul in DayZ compared to ArmA
Areos (DayZ) replied to BL1P's topic in General Discussion
Everybody's discussing aircraft functionality and availability, and I'm just sitting here hoping I can un-flip my ATV after a stray pebble gives me 5 seconds of air time. -
people need to understand that DayZ is Zombie apocalypse GAME and not PVP deathmatch
Areos (DayZ) replied to gamer222's topic in General Discussion
What does the name of the game in question have anything to do with how the game has, does and always will function? Zombies have never been the main threat against players, as by design. Other players have always been the premiere threat against your well-being, and this has remained 100% true since the first day this mod came out. Besides, "DayZ" is a lot more catchy than "DayMurderedOverCannedBeans". -
[POLL] - 3PP / 1PP and seeing round corners
Areos (DayZ) replied to floj's topic in General Discussion
I'd be legitimately impressed and happy if they fixed all of the issues regarding 1PP gameplay, but my realistic side tells me that the developers will put greater emphasis into fixing and implementing new content into the alpha over fixing 1PP issues that are already resolved by using 3PP instead. If these issues were so easily fixed, I would have expected them to be fixed before this game even reached the open alpha state it's in now, especially when they affect important issues like proper controls and navigation through crowded corridors. -
people need to understand that DayZ is Zombie apocalypse GAME and not PVP deathmatch
Areos (DayZ) replied to gamer222's topic in General Discussion
Anybody who has played this game for longer than 3 seconds should know that the zombies are an afterthought to the experience. They may be the backstory's plot device as to why you're running around shooting other people over canned beans, but they are not and never have been the main threat to the player. Other players have always been. This doesn't mean that zombies can't be used as a gameplay mechanic to promote grouping with other survivors, exploring the environments carefully and actually finding a use for non-long ranged weapons, but they're hardly a relevant threat when compared to the true threat that's always lurking around the corner--other players whom want that pristine can-opener of yours. -
[POLL] - 3PP / 1PP and seeing round corners
Areos (DayZ) replied to floj's topic in General Discussion
The need for third person view is too deeply-ingrained into the functionality of the game as of now. Trying to remove 3PP is going to be met with significant backlash because of how generally clunky the alternative, playing exclusively in first person view, can be. Nerfing it instead of removing it risks inhibiting basic functionality of how 3PP works, which is the main drawback already associated with 1PP. I and many others won't get on board with the idea of nerfing/removing 3PP until the alternative, which is making 1PP tolerable to play in long-term, is remedied. Let's be honest here; for all things the original mod and standalone do well in terms of portraying and executing an open world, the close quarter environments and controls lag significantly behind any other typical FPS game. Using 3PP helps make this handicap more tolerable. Believe me when I say, for reasons including immersion and increased tension, that I feel DayZ would function a lot better if it were exclusively 1PP. But this cannot happen until the issues regarding 1PP are fixed entirely, which I personally don't see happening ever. -

As unlikely of a feature I think it would be, I think the idea of domesticating stray dogs or horses would be an amazing addition to the game. It could be potentially difficult successfully domesticating an animal, but it could come with a lot of benefits when undergone.

The eating can be quite loud, but there is an inherent strategy in deciding when and where to eat. I'd be a stupid decision to eat when you're within potential earshot of another player in highly-contested areas, regardless of how loud the sound effect is due to the amount of time it currently takes to eat. Always stuff your face before you go infiltrating airfields.

We NEED some way to identify heros and bandits.
Areos (DayZ) replied to 1S1K-Airborne's topic in General Discussion
There shouldn't be any distinguishable difference between bandits and survivors except for the way they choose to play the game. -
There's no other game on the market like it, and I enjoy the mixture of hardcore survival gameplay and loot-based reward system.

Anyways, for the topic at hand, the only way I'm sure that gear becomes reduced in quality (if not outright ruined) is by taking damage from other players. I'm not sure if this is simply caused by taking damage in general (such as by zombies or the environment), but it only seems logical that it would. For things that should, in my opinion, dampen the quality of items in one's inventory include: -- Pathing or swimming through deep water. -- Exposed food over long periods of time. (Such as fresh fruit becoming rotten or opened canned food becoming spoiled) -- Not taking proper care of equipment. (Such as not cleaning firearms or carrying medical equipment outside of a container) -- Possibly storing delicate equipment with sturdy equipment. (Such as a gas lamp being shattered in a bag full of cans and boxes) I don't know if any of the above actually occur in-game already, but these are a few things I think should logically affect an item's quality.

All you've done is ruined this thread.

Now you've just worn out your welcome.

A while ago in the original mod, a group of buddies and I reverse-robbed a low-geared player. We jumped and cornered him in a building, threatened to shoot him if he made any sudden movements and forced him into the corner of the room. We then proceeded to fill his inventory with food and water, survival equipment and weaponry before dispersing out of the building and back into the woods. We were kind of bored.

I was running around US76 a few days back and I found a crashed helicopter west of the NW Airfield. After clearing the zombies out and shuffling around, I found an FN FAL with a few magazines available. Wooo! I got around to testing it, and although the weapon was pretty solid, it didn't "wow" me like I thought your typical crashed helicopter-exclusive weaponry would. It definitely had positive characteristics to boast, like its powerful ammunition and burst fire capabilities, but it didn't feel any superior in comparison to the M14 EP1. The FN FAL did have a burst fire mode, but it felt unnecessary due to the powerful magazine type already available, which will down any zombie or survivor in a single hit. The ironsights are pretty mediocre and don't grant the peripheral view that the M14 EP1 allows with its aimpoint sight. Add in the fact that FN FAL ammunition is exceptionally rare and that the average military structure is waste deep in DMR ammo, and I feel that the FN FAL isn't worthy of being crashed helicopter-exclusive loot. The M16A2 was underwhelming to me as well, but it's common enough that it's not potentially glorified in any way.

I've tried updating ARMA II to the latest beta build recently released, 95310, but with limited success. I've downloaded the zip off of the main website and followed the install process. After a near-instantaneous installation, I'm given a error stating that the files may not have installed properly. Opening ARMA II afterwards confirms this--the game is still using beta build 95248. Is there something I'm doing wrong here?

Just what is the best sniper?
Areos (DayZ) replied to Chewbacca Jesus's topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
The AS50 is the best sniper to use during the day due to its immense damage, extreme effective range and being semi automatic. It'll kill any player in one shot, and will destroy vehicles in conjunction with AS50 ammunition. The DMR is the best sniper to use at night solely because it's the only sniper rifle compatible with night vision goggles, if you're discounting the modified FN FAL. It has very plentiful ammunition with a large magazine size, deals great damage and is semi automatic. -
Why did the M1911 and Revolver get nerfed?
Areos (DayZ) replied to spankimus's topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
It's silly to attempt headshotting zombies with a weapon that would kill them with a shot center mass to begin with, unless you're trying to inflate your debug monitor's headshot count. I haven't tried the M1911 or Revolver on zombies yet, but I did shoot a boar earlier that survived the first Revolver shot, so I may be seeing the effect of these nerfs too. Regardless, this definitely dampens the effectiveness of these guns, though I do not agree that they're in any way poor weapons due to the ammo conversion glitch that everybody and their mother has been no doubt abusing. -
It's sad that people leave when server hits night
Areos (DayZ) replied to Rager (DayZ)'s topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
Even with night vision goggles, I do not prefer playing on night servers solely because I know people avoid them like the plague. -
My M107 for your AS50?
Areos (DayZ) replied to adamtheheretic's topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
The AS50 does equal damage in comparison to the M107 when using M107 magazines, but if the AS50 is using AS50 magazines (which the M107 cannot use), its damage spikes exponentially. This may seem pointless considering the AS50 will one-shot with regular M107 ammunition, but that spike in damage means the AS50 can take out any vehicle with ease. The AS50 ammunition also allows for greater muzzle velocity, reduced bullet drop and a decrease in sound. So with the AS50, you get over the M107: -- More plentiful ammunition due to usage of two different magazine types, not just one. -- Greatly increased damage when using AS50 rounds, making the weapon ideal for destroying vehicles. -- Greater muzzle velocity when using AS50 rounds. -- Reduced bullet drop when using AS50 rounds. -- Reduced noise when using AS50 rounds. The AS50 is superior to the M107 because of this. The only thing you can viably argue for in the M107's favor is the massive sound generated by the weapon being an intimidation factor when used against other players. -
Beta Build 95310 Won't Install.
Areos (DayZ) replied to Areos (DayZ)'s topic in DayZ Mod Troubleshooting
I've done the method to launch Arma2: OA via Steam, and I was able to open it in version 95310, but then I'm hit with the "you cannot play/edit this mission, it is dependent on downloadable content that has been deleted" error when I try to enter a server. I'm guessing this launch isn't detecting my @dayz folder somehow. When I try to launch the beta through the expansion/beta folder, I first receive a "No entry '.profilePathDefault'." error and then a "bin\config.bin/CfgWeapons/G36_C_SD_eotech/Burst: Cannot find base class 'Burst'" error, which closes the game. Meh. Will the latter option still allow me to open the beta build 95310 through Six Launcher, or am I no longer able to use the Six Launcher because of this?
