  2. Well, many players seem to find humor in killing others on sight. Probably not what you had envisioned. The above pointed out, I not too long ago was crossing the land bridge from island to island on Namalsk with a random friendly I had met in Vorkuta. Halfway across we met an unarmed player coming from the other side. Both of us were armed with the silenced AKS. When the other guy saw us he just crouched down and waited, as if he knew his time was up. I mean come on, two players, well geared encountering an unarmed player on a normally PvP dominated map in a know player killing part of it? We spared him, told him to keep moving and get to shelter as an EVR was soon due to hit. Even as we began climbing the hill toward Old Hospital, the guy was still in the same spot watching as if in disbelief that we did not turn and shoot him. Turned out well in the end for us when a few days later we met him on the surface of A2 and better geared, he did not shoot us on sight.
  3. I like to get set up before encountering other players, so I usually choose to spawn in the area around Seven and Marina on the southwest coast of the smaller island. From that area, you can head for Novi Dvor and the high value military loot that spawns there in the compound.

    Will anyone continue playing Dayz?

Myself, I will continue to mod and play DayZ for the foreseeable time to come. Judging by the traffic at DayZ modding communities such as Tuungle and OpenDayZ, I expect the mod will live on in various forms for years to come. There seems to be a somewhat common process among those who come to DayZ. It begins with playing the game, slowly transitions to mastery of the game, finds the player becoming a private hive admin and soon after, an amateur coder who spends ungodly chunks of days and nights experimenting with modifications to their server. A few of the aforementioned go on to create their own DayZ mod ... but that is something for those much more gifted at managing their time than I.

    MK12

With DayZ.ST there is a custom load out editor through which you can add non-spawning weapons to your own or other players' inventories. The Mk12 happens to be one of those addable weapons that does not require Rmod to use in game. As for the weapon itself, I do not care for it. Too many other weapons of similar damage have both the ACOG/DMR type scope and a close range sight.

    Starting A Dayz Server

@ the OP. More power to you. Hosting a DayZ server is a great way to learn about what lurks behind the code curtain. It's a great experience even if you never have a single player join.

So what version is actually DAYZ?

@ the OP. Do yourself a favor and never donate for in game items or any other reason. The best part about DayZ is discovering the phenomenon it has become on your own.

    My trouble with direct chat

Don't feel bad OP. Sometimes I just want to be left alone to play the game without answering every other fellow player's inquiries. I know that this tends to freak some people out, even make them assume I am hostile simply because I will not reply. When in silent mode I am ok with the possible consequences. As for giving respect dependent on age, that is one of the more laughable concepts I have encountered. Respect is earned - no matter your age. Personally, I've run around DayZ with players of all ages, and have never had a problem with younger players - having origin in the centuries ago 1970's myself and offspring older than some of you here. Just be yourself.

So I went to the real Chernarus today..

This is quite incredible. What I find amazing is how much the "real" Chernarus resembles parts of the Pennsylvania countryside. Thank you for sharing these great pics, and the spheres did work for me on Chrome.

Most annoying way you have died in DayZ?

Slightly clipped the edge of helicopter main rotor with the grill of an MTVR and both vehicles exploded.

    Have I missed something?

System Shock and System 2: Two of the greatest PC games ever conceived. Try the King's Field series - for Playstation 1 and two but you can run them on an emulator. Clive Barker's Undying was awesome.
  12. Try checking for it at the Castle Bled ruins. Coordinates 053 - 079. Also at 035 - 089. Both locations are on the smaller of the two islands.
  13. Provided you have available a server on which to modify code and test it ... 1. For zombie speed: you must override the zombie_agent.fsm server side. 2. To fool with zombie animations, you'd need to essentially create your own mod. 3. Headshot only zombies: http://opendayz.net/...675/#post-38082 4. Zombie senses modification: start your search in player_zombieCheck.sqf 5. Zombie damage dealt: player_zombieAttack.sqf 6. Register at opendayz.net, use the search function and be prepared to do a lot of reading. 7. Everything else ... Battleye should be enabled at all times unless your server is only for testing these rather grand ideas of yours.

  15. This is a very sore subject for me. I was on a great Chernarus server months back where the seemingly "friendly" admins - tweedle dee and dumber - would often try to interact all the time with us players. After a few days of seeming bliss and getting set up, I was playing alone with one of the admins. All he wanted to talk to me about was donation packages and what kind of gear a player should get for each level of donation. He whined on and on about the costs of running a server, and subtly hinted that I should donate to help out. Anyway, it came down to the admin telling me I had to donate in order play on his server. I walked. I've had my own server for four months. I know how much it costs to run one, to rent a teamspeak server, to set up a free website and forum to pitch your own server to the DayZ community. It is ridiculously cheap my friends. My opinion, you ask for donations, you were not cut to be an admin in the first place. It is that simple. To those who boo hoo about not being able to continue to pay for their server without donations, I think that is just too bad. DayZ is free. We've all bought Arma2, OA, and perhaps PMC and BAF. Why on Earth would you pay someone for gear you can easily enough get in game? If I wanted to pay a monthly fee, I'd play an MMO. Edit: Paying to "upgrade" your server? Paying for better anti-hack software? Spend a few months learning to script .sqf, learn your way around the database and do it yourself for free or with the FREE aid of the awesome Arma2/DayZ scripting community. As for bought anti-hack software, passing that cost to your player base is very questionable.

Zomibies seeing me from a MILE away

The 1.7.5.1 zombies were rather alert I thought. The latest ones seem to give up if you run away for any amount of time. The most difficult so far in my opinion were the 1.7.4.4 Namalsk zombies. Those zeds could hit you as you passed them and would sometimes hit you when they ran straight at you. Just remember that for the most part if you keep moving, they will rarely get you. Also, it never hurts to low crawl into high zombie count area, just be ready to stand up and run if they aggro.

Ever get stuck on auto pilot?

Logging out and then back in usually clears this up. Nothing like running from zombies and into a wall only to find yourself pinned there and your feet still running in place.
  18. Saethkept

    Sounds?

I tend to turn the volume down headphones or speakers. I also rarely move toward a contact, as doing so can invite a world of hurt into any play session. Better to move away evasively, get some distance, choose your terrain and then hook back to contact if need be. Goes without saying that the first thing I did when starting DayZ was to disable the music or whatever those noises are supposed to be.

The best Dayz tip you have ever heard

Hmm ... - Nothing is permanent in DayZ. What you have this moment will be gone the next. - DayZ oxymorons: friendly clan; safe zone; bandit diplomacy; friendly fire; live forever - Do not use the 'slide down ladder' option. - Do not eject if you accidentally select 'turn engine off' while in flight. - If you do not understand the concept of 'flaps up or down' keep your feet on the ground. - If you suspect you do not have enough fuel to take off, do not try to fly to the nearest fuel tank. - Shooting someone in the leg is much better than asking questions first when the most common answer is hot lead. - When in doubt, charlie out. Alpha being 'inquire friendly' and Bravo, 'stick' around to find out.

    A Strange Happening

Good of you as well to not shoot and loot him ... I presume you did not anyway.
  21. From a purely game balancing point of view I agree with Dallas - less is more overall. I suppose the ultimate expression of that would be an arsenal limited to muzzle loading and melee weapons. That would not be a whole lot of fun in my opinion. As for WWII era weaponry, much of that is just as destructive as it's modern counterparts. I can see players running around with a BAR, an MG34 or a Solothurn 20mm anti tank rifle. The aforementioned would be just as death match worthy as anything already in Arma2.

    Elevation and bullet trajectory

I would only add that some weapons - rifles - seem to possess laser like accuracy, while the pseudo-bullets of others drop like a lead kite at range. Experimentation clears this up nicely. My favorite medium range "testing range" is on Namalsk around the dam. I've zeroed many rifles there - not with the 'page' keys - but rather by firing groups of shots at varying ranges to see how they drop and wander. Crates on the towers make the best targets. Also a good place to practice the firing of 40mm M203 grenades into open windows.
  23. Well ... I agree that the limitation of weapons and vehicles and military materiel is somewhat unrealistic. Simple answer there is that Rocket and other DayZ devs did this to balance gameplay. But I get what you're saying, I see where you are coming from. Why can we have a silenced assault carbine and a couple of silenced SMGs but not a silenced PDW? Or why an armed chopper, but not an armed boat? Makes you want to pull out your hair. From a somewhat real world point of view - well in my realm of thought it would depend at what point in the apocalypse you arrived in "Chernarus" or whatever other hypothetical modern nation. At the outset retailers of weapons such as Wal Mart and Dick's and Cabela's, etc. would get mobbed by ... well a mob of terrified civilians seeking a firearm or three. Heck, when they call for an inch of snow around here, everyone buys up all the bread, eggs and milk. Police would still be in control to some extent, so you're not going to raid their armory, and even if they were suddenly gone, you'd need some power tools to get at the boomsticks. National Guard or Army Reserve armories? Try breaking into one of their vaults. Mid way through the crisis, let's say the regular Army has been deployed, are you gonna ask a grunt at some barricade to borrow his weapon? Again with the police armories - every dude in a many mile radius is going to have the same idea, and any place that contains firearms is going to be death match central. Further on into the "aftermath" - some time after the police and our armies have fallen, all of those posh burst fire and automatic weapons will have sat out in the elements for weeks, months, a year. Good luck getting them to function. Of course scavengers will have picked most of that hardware clean by then. Gearing up after a real world collapse of civilization would be more difficult than it seems. Myself, think I would head to the Beretta manufacturing plant south of here, but everyone would likely think of that. Just for fun, imagine trying to teach yourself to fly a Bell Jet Ranger, or a Blackhawk or even one of those Agusta helicopters they use for Life Flights. I think I would keep my feet planted on the ground, zombies or not.
  24. I agree that server hopping is silly. I had a server owner partner once on a private hive who turned out to be using our server to gear up for other servers on the hive. Banned him however, for teleporting. Really, I never noticed server hopping too much in DayZ. It was while dirtying my boots in that other 'Z' game that I grew to hate them.

    how do YOU play DayZ?

I play hard-core solo, evading others at all costs, until getting set up somewhat. Sometimes I fix up a vehicle, other times I remain on foot. I like to observe others while avoiding them. Sometimes I will go out of my way to help another, and still other times I ignore all communications. Mid end game for me would be running a land or air taxi service. You know - 'Chernarus Ground Tours' "We get you there under fire" - that sort of thing. Other than that, providing overwatch for absolute strangers is a lot of fun, as is ambush diplomacy with clan groups.
