I think that the road blocking detritus is a good thing. All of that annoying debris greatly ups the tension when you're trying to hastily get through a town. The obstructions really came into good use when zombies were given the ability to attack players in ground vehicles. I remember many times early in my DayZ career trying to get through Gorka or some similar place on an open vehicle and panicking as I got stuck on those roadblocks and had to backtrack or go around. I hope that similar challenges make their way into the SA.

DayZ Inspired Book (In Progress)
Saethkept replied to ching_yung's topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
Nice work, OP. Try to write at least 1500 words per day. Afterward, let what you've written in a given day sit overnight. When you begin anew, proofread yesterday's work before you continue the story. You'll have an easier time polishing your work this way. At any rate, writers develop many curious habits - some good, others bad - but at least the habits you develop will be uniquely yours. -
The gist of it all my friend, is that DayZ is a video game. DayZ is remotely joined pixels rendered for our enjoyment ... our virtual enjoyment. No need to bring supposed real life factoids into the fray. Further, not every player is knowledgeable enough or willing to spend the time to ghost from building to building to loot each town or city, or low crawl for hundreds of yards under threat of being sniped. One of the first videos of DayZ I viewed months ago was of a clan perched on a mountainside outside of Elektro doing nothing but laughing as they picked off new and inexperienced players with .50 rifles. You reminded me of them, OP. That video is also the best argument for why these rifles should be removed from the game.

I like your idea, Drakan. I would also not mind a drunken Crow shooting game similar to one in S.T.A.L.K.E.R. Clear Sky at the bandit base.

Do you need to repair every part of a heli to be able to fly?
Saethkept replied to Water's topic in New Player Discussion
Normally when you have a toolbox in your inventory, you will get a readout of everything that needs to be repaired. Sometimes however, you fix one damaged part and all of them become green again. You just have to play around with each individual aircraft you find in order judge repairs needed. Like mentioned above, you ought to repair everything. This is especially true if the helicopter in question has a Heads Up Display. If the avionics are not fully repaired, the HUD will blink or not come on at all which is really annoying. -
Why can't I play DayZ? Require assistance!
Saethkept replied to sheepdawg's topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
If you look at under the install/update tab on DayZ Commander, you will see an install button to the right of each mod. Normally, that same "button" will indicate if your install of any given mod is corrupt. In that case, you simply re-install whatever mod has not installed correctly. -
Could it be possible to put a train in DayZ?
Saethkept replied to Poncho Villa's topic in DayZ Mod Suggestions
Just do a search over at opendayz.net. It has been done, but not without some comical bugs. They've a working (moving) train in game - but I do not think you can ride on it. However, there is a train mod for Arma2 which allows the player to ride on it, but last time I checked, using it would require rebuilding the given DayZ mod you'd want to use it on as it cannot be done server side. -

I'm fairly certain the audio was heavily edited. Nice post nonetheless. -
Problem: you enkindle a light source, you become a target. Solution: find night vision goggles. Problem: It's too dark without turning on a light, which makes you a target. Cheap Solution: Turn up brightness and Gamma (I don't endorse this one) Problem: Night vision goggles are too hard to find. Solution: You have not played long enough; keep searching, have faith. Problem: You are trying to ride your old bicycle to Gorka from your camp on the coast. It's pitch black and raining like biblical times ten. You keep bumping your head into trees. Solution: You don't need one. Why?: If you've got the backbone to attempt that, you never needed a light source in the first place.

Disagreement between a friend
Saethkept replied to Cap'n (DayZ)'s topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
I would also comment that the water and aquatic vegetation are very well rendered and realistic looking in DayZ. Now if only catfish, carp and pike would spawn in those ponds, I would never leave Chernarus. Imagine a salmon run along the coast of Namalsk, or fishing for sea run brown trout on Taviana. Tarpon fishing on Lingor anyone? -
Disagreement between a friend
Saethkept replied to Cap'n (DayZ)'s topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
Arma2 has a very earthy, realistic look to it - much like the S.T.A.L.K.E.R. series. Suits me fine. Then again, I remember when 1024x768 was the most awesome resolution, and 16mb Voodoo video cards were the stuff of legends. I've never played the newer COD games, so I can't comment on that. -
Russian weaponry and vehicles.
Saethkept replied to foliveira1982@gmail.com's topic in New Player Discussion
You make an interesting point. Have you played DayZ Namalsk? It has a much more Soviet era feel with Russian helicopter crashes, state run farming communes, abandoned and isolated Soviet style structures and military bases that feel like they came right out of the 80's. Other than that, I always envisioned the setting of Chernarus DayZ as an apocalypse which occurred during a U.S./Russian/NATO military action in a former Soviet satellite nation. Hence the combination of weapon and uniform types from several countries of origin. -
OP, I've seen zombies slowed to walking only, and even with dramatically increased hit damage, they are far too easy to get around and past. I think the answer is to both increase the damage they can take, spawn them in buildings and make them capable of fast movement while they are indoors. Most all loot spawns indoors, so running into a room or hallway crowded with zombies would be very interesting. Having to clear a building room by room would be very intense.

Further expansion of Chernarus
Saethkept replied to Cap'n (DayZ)'s topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
I've always imagined the "ideal" sized DayZ map to be 900 square kilometers. With the speed of faster land vehicles and aircraft, one can cover even the largest current maps in too short an amount of time. Larger maps would also allow for small communities to grow around certain areas of given map without the constant threat of "invasion". I am all for larger maps, and if I had a year or two off from real life, I would create a 900 or 1200 square km map for DayZ. Perhaps someone will get down to it at some point. -
Do you have to re-fuel Helicopters at Gas Stations
Saethkept replied to DelayingNobody's topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
Land and refuel at these coordinates - 056, 123. It's a small walled in power station NW of Cherno. No zombies spawn there beyond one or two randoms. -
Nice post, Het. I remember the days of flying around everywhere on auto hover. The days when Hueys and KA-60s would get away from me and I'd crash them into whatever terrain feature was closest. The time I found an Apache on Namalsk and took off without auto hover, and exploded a few feet up in some trees. The best training advice I could offer, would be to find a little bird on a low pop server, or spawn one in the editor. Hop in, take off and get rid of of auto hover. To truly master flight in Arma/DayZ, you must be able to control your speed without throttle input. Nose down to loose altitude and speed, nose up to slow and gain some altitude. The way I learned was diving like a banshee on a winding road from 100 meters up, and then following the road from no higher than 10-30 meters up. Following a coastline can work just as well. Another trick, roll slightly left or right to gain speed without diving too much. As always, low and fast is your best bet in hostile territory.

Where is our community headed?
Saethkept replied to Cap'n (DayZ)'s topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
Well, as an online community, the DayZ forums are more sane and sanitary than most similar public gaming boards I've sampled over the years. From the Heretic and Ultima Online and Battlecruiser and Daikatana boards of bygone days, to the more recent odor of forums such as the slogging through much muck that was the WarZ, I would rate the DayZ community a much more intelligent and friendly group by far. Where is this enjoyable community heading? I think that community management has done a good job at the helm in most all areas relevant. Recently some fears have arisen that some of the more popular offshoot mods are terminally ill with such a steep loss in server numbers, so if anything I would like to see more sub forum space for discussion and acknowledgement/support of mods of the mod. Other than that, in my opinion the community is looking good for the time being. Lastly, I think that when the standalone hits, we will see a sudden, large influx of returning and new members, which for a small period of time could change the temperament in general around here but that will likely be brought under control in due time. This is one gaming community I would have liked to have been in on from the get go. Unfortunately I had taken yet another hiatus from PC gaming before DayZ came about and so I was a few months late to the party. What a party it has been. -
There is no "legit" betrayal. Tricking someone into trusting you is no trick. In DayZ, it is among the easiest of accomplishments. Those who demonstrate a smug pride in doing so have illustrated their in game personalities quite clearly and in large block print scrawled in crayon. True enough, some of us do eventually develop wider reputations than others around the DayZ community. What comes around often does indeed go around. Something to keep in mind.

Your best bet, OP is to join a private server that requires a password to log on to and/or is white listed. You've just got to take the pulse of a few different servers until you find one that suits your tastes. Public servers have a certain feel and charm, but hackers do still hit them.

Group of Hackers on US 845 (video proof)
Saethkept replied to mines_skyline's topic in Mod Servers & Private Hives
Good that you caught them on video. I do hope they come over to my server. The guy who was talking about the "three wrong moves" - yeah, I'd like to get hold of him. -
On the northeast edge of Berezino there's a small military camp that spawns some low grade military items. The Northeast Airstrip can be a moderately safe area to loot - it's just north of Krasnostav. There you will find hangars and an aircraft control tower. Do not underestimate the hangars as sometimes they spawn some really good stuff. Far to the north above Berezino you will see an inlet along the coast called Guba. A rubber raft usually spawns there. In the raft's inventory - if no one has taken it yet - you will find a Coyote Backpack.

Do not know if it qualifies as the story took place on Namalsk, but nevertheless. I have played countless hours on Namalsk, both on private servers and a server I own. Many locations around that cursed map feel "off" but none causes me to more frequently look over my shoulder than Old Hospital. Two "happenings" stand out more starkly in memory than others. In the first instance, I was introducing a friend to DayZ some months back. He spawned in over on the small island east of Old Sawmill - we had briefly set a camp there. Keep in mind that he had played DayZ for a total at that point of perhaps a few hours divided between several different maps, so yes, he was a greenhorn and also, yes, a Namalsk veteran server is not the kindest map for noob training. So I flew over in my KA-60, picked him up and proceeded to land just outside the wall outside Old Hospital to conduct a bit of training. We proceeded stealthily inside the wall, and then into the office building. As I narrated the do's and don'ts of looting (I let him take the upper floors), he cried out over TS3. When I reached the second floor I saw what would be the first of several player corpses who had died while standing and remained standing. It was as if some unknown force of death had blown in on the chill wind off the frigid sea and had ended their cyber lives in mid step. Of all the many, many instances of death I have come across in my DayZ career, that encounter with the standing corpses sticks out as the creepiest. Needless to say, my friend was unsettled and wanted to bug out. The second instance, I was ironically in that same office building in Old Hospital, looting the third floor (inside), when I happened to turn around while crouched with my back to the stairway. Now keep in mind that this was back in my early DayZ days when I would take the time to literally crawl into an area to avoid zombie aggro. I swear to this day that I had not aggro'd a single zombie while getting into the office building, but at any rate. So I turned around at the top of the third floor staircase - just in time to see a lone zombie crawling (yes, crawling) silently up the stairs, clearly intent on making his next snack out my hide. For some reason I was so darn startled that instead of reacting as normal, I just sat there ... frozen as cold as the Namalsk highlands. One zombie hit later I was knocked flat on the the tiles, bleeding and being munched on by that creepy crawling zed. Took some time before I entered that building again. Still gives me the shivers. Overall, I do not know what it is about Old Hospital that whispers doom to my ears on the gelid breeze, but let me warn you; that place will rear up and snap shut it's jaws before you can work the trigger on that high tech automatic firepower clenched in your cold, dead fingers.

Unfortunately, intention is not skin deep. No matter what the other player looked like, I would observe their actions before proceeding. A wolf in sheep's clothing; you just never know.
