  1. * I noticed that not far below this new topic is a topic that discusses increased zombie difficulty. I am in no way attemping to detract from or duplicate that thread. I feel that the zombies in DayZ should be the primary threat - followed by the environment which forces survival and then other player survivors. I spent a couple of weeks running Taviana.eu on my server, and while many bugs exist in the loot table and humanity system, the aspect that kept drawing me back in was the zombie difficulty: zombies could only die by headshots. At the end of our run on Taviana.eu, I had amassed around 330 zombie kills but I had expeneded well over a thousand rounds of ammo to achieve this, as you can pump round after round into their chests and legs, and the headshot zombies keep coming and coming. I have to say that the taviana.eu zombies are the only zed in DayZ that over the months I have been playing the mod, have felt like a real and unavoidable threat to the player. What I suggest is, to model the zombies as a whole in DayZ after the zombies in the cult horror film 'Return Of The Living Dead'. In that film the zombies were immune to both "body" and headshots; one had to basically do them enough damage to either impede their locomotion, or destroy them entirely. Both the damage model and the appearence of the zombies in the aformentioned film ought to be reproduced in DayZ. Nothing would inspire true player teamwork like having to enter a city where the dead are next to impossible to destroy. Additionally, I suggest greater environmental risk for us survivors in the game. Harsher climate variables, a wider range of bones that can be broken by not taking care with various terrain and architectural features, etc. I love the challenge both Namalsk and Celle pose with cold weather, however both can be nullified too easily by finding the proper clothing or with heatpads. How about swamps that cause disease when wading through them or venemous reptiles and insects? The list could on quite endlessly. Just a few ideas.

A Darker, Grittier, More Retro DayZ

I would add that while DayZ is the only thing, the best thing zombie survival going right now, the lore of the headshot zombie has existed for forty-five years...stretching back to George Romero's Night Of The Living Dead. Disabling a zombie is one thing, but to destroy them should require a headshot, total incineration or high explosive rounds. I also disagree with the use of the "Neo-Zombie" infected human as a bait and switch for the true once living now dead and animated zombie. But as I said DayZ is the best thing going right now, I would just rather be pursued and tracked down and hounded by "zombies" that are, that are rotting, falling apart, long or recently dead and still coming for me ... squad machine gun belt half expended or not.

A Darker, Grittier, More Retro DayZ

I agree with SausageKing. The Tavi.eu zombies took me down a number of times ... mostly because I was not paying attention or trying to land an unarmed heli in the middle of Krasnoznamensk with a swarm beneath the skids. But, recently on a 1.7.6.1 server, I went to reclaim gear off my body just west of Cherno by the dock past the brick factory. I was armed only with an open sight M16 and a few mags. I had to shoot at another player thus aggroing a large number of zeds. I was able to survive the swarm by kneeling and calmly firing semi auto shots and burst. I want zombies that terrify the *ell out of me, or at least pose to me the risk of dying and losing gear. I love the PvP, but come on this is a zombie/infected humans from Earth, survival game. Return Of The Living Dead baby! Braaains!

    Celle 1.9 Weapons

I've been experimenting with Celle 1.9/1.7.6.1 on my private server, and the selection of new weaponry is staggering. At any rate, I have a few questions about the new weapons and ammo. Does anyone have the foggiest idea what ammo the Masterkey shotgun - mounted beneath the barrel of the Masterkey ACOG or Iron Sights version - uses? I have tried 2 round and 8 round pellets and slugs, and even the 15 round slugs for the Winchester and nothing seems to work in the Masterkey. Second question. Has anyone figured out all of the new ammo conversions? There's MP5 pistol ammo, Uzi ammo - which supposedly is for the MP5, and just so many other new pistol, SMG and rifle ammo that I have little idea what bullets go with what gun. At any rate, I am loving the 33 round Glock magazines, and I found a .357 magnum revolver which is really cool.
  6. I was exploring Taviana 2.0 on a server I administer, and found the following in a hangar at the central airbase south of Molotovsk. Could the name of the ammo be a bug, or is this something hacked, or what? Anyway, finding this got my hopes up that somehow the AA-12 had made it mysteriously into the weapon spawns or something (I am running rmod) until I looked up AA-12 ammo and discovered it exists only in 20 round drum form.

    Odd Shotgun Ammo ...

    Ah ... Ok ... thanks.

    Celle 1.9 Weapons

    Thank you much, burritoman!
  9. You live. You survive. You kill. You die. You write your own story; that is the true eloquence of DayZ. Had a clan crew land 500 meters off my one o'clock one night around the NE airfield. I knew they were bandits, they knew it - they'd been KoS'ing all night on the server. I was in some rocks, it was very dark and I was armed with an FN/FAL AN/PVS. I watched as they rendezvoused with the rest of their crew who drove up in a Ural Civilian. I asked in chat "are you friendly, I have eyes on the Huey and the Ural." We talked a bit. the jist of their frantic plea was: don't shoot us, don't panic and shoot, don't get paranoid ... we are leaving." The trouble was, I was already paranoid - from the moment I had logged in hours before. That's the essence of survival in DayZ, I think - constant paranoia to some degree.

    DayZ: Namalsk

Hey Sumrak, Could you please post a list of "allowed" vehicles for Namalsk? I run a server, and was just experimenting with adding various vehicles from my server provider's database to the map, and several spawned but were invisible until I replaced them with more common ones. For instance, I wanted to add a few of the tan desert humvees, the desert M1030, and a GAZ Vodnik. However, I suppose these have not been approved to run in Namalsk yet? A list of "approved" or "permitted" vehicles would be awesome. I am running .741 with 1.7.6.1 by the way, and I think it is great. Thanks for the update.

    Whats the fun in this?

In my opinion DayZ is not complete without the full day/night cycle and all the benefits/handicaps either or both provide. On Namalsk for instance, nighfall means - and brings a number of challenges/advantages. Nightfall brings a crippling chill until you've found Warm Clothes. But the night also makes dealing with Bloodsuckers easier as their eyes glow molten red. I tend to never adjust my brightness or gamma to alter the in game environment. I carry both a G17 w/flashlight and the red beam military flashlight, and I stick to higher ridges and hilltops for better visibility on the darkest of nights. Remember that turning on your flashlight is like firing off a high caliber rifle; flick the beam on for a moment to get your bearings, the turn it off and change position immediately.
  12. I've set up a great Taviana 2.0 server with many custom vehicles but I was left somewhat clueless after much research as to whether or not there is a method of running Tavi 2.0 with the latest DayZ update, or at least with 1.7.5.1 so that the new DayZ weapons/zombie behavior/etc. are present.

    DayzCommander Errors?

Sorry, I am not sure beyond what I already posted ... a reinstall could not hurt perhaps?
  14. I will be opening a whitelisted private server to the "public" in a week or so - the map being either Namalsk or Taviana - we are still fine tuning everything and getting a feel for server admin duties. We will have a "hands off" approach to server management i.e. we will play mostly anonomously alongside players we allow in. Average age so far is thirties but younger, mature players will be welcome as well. The admin staff is the "Hero/medic" type, and while bandits will be permitted, they will also be ruthlessly hunted:) Additionally, we will be setting up a trading post/safe area to lightly roleplay the beginning of the reconstruction of civilization post apocalypse style. Likely bandits will be permitted to similarly construct a den or whatever it is bandits do, so hopefully the gameplay will be fun, but we above all else want to preserve the freedom and and true sandbox/hardcore survival spirit of DayZ. Lastly, we've set up some fun custom vehicle spawns, but nothing outrageous and all vehicles will require extensive repair to get going. If you send me a PM I will update you when our server opens.

    DayzCommander Errors?

Are you trying to join servers that are running different versions of DayZ than you have installed? For example, and I am not trying to insult your intelligence, are you running the very newest version of DayZ? I know some others have had trouble joining servers with it. Try rolling DayZ back to 1.7.4.4, install something like Namalsk through DayZ Commander, and then try joining that in order to see if DayZ is working at all. The other thing you can try, and I did not buy my Arma 2 and OA via Amazon, I got mine through Steam. But I remember that after downloading and installing them, I had to manually run both Arma 2 and OA once each in order to complete the install process and allow DayZ to work properly.
  16. I am running a DayZ private server through HFB. When I searched through my database via phpmyadmin, I found the expected possible vehicle spawn points for instances: Chernarus, Namalsk, Lingor, Takistan and Panthera. However, HFB provides map packs for pretty much every other DayZ map out there. So here is my problem: if i would wish to run say a Taviana map for a while, apparently, vehicles would never spawn especially not "natively" according to "official" spawn point locations, because in my world_vehicle database, there aren't any spawn points present for Taviana. What I do not understand is why did HFB even provide the other map packs if they were not going to add vehicle spawn points for them in the database? This is severely annoying, as before I began getting into looking around the database, I had tried to run a Celle map, and waited days for vehicles to spawn never knowing that even despite running the vehicle spawn script a few times, vehicles could never spawn. My question for those in possession of pertinent knowledge is, is there anything I can do about this to enable vehicles to spawn in the "official" locations they should on these maps I've mentioned, or is this just a case of my server provider not doing it's job? I have support tickets in with HFB, but many hours can and usually do pass - or days - before they will answer multiple questions.

    Server Database File Issues

This topic can be closed, please. HFB reported that it was a database bug on their end and they've fixed it. Thanks.
  18. The DLC is worth it. With BAF and PMC, you get improved visuals on the following, that I have so far discovered: - All "starter" civilian clothing - Camo Clothing - Hero Skin (amazing with the DLC) - British Offroad Jeeps (Land Rovers) - KA-60 Helicopter (cockpit is awesome with the DLC) - L85 ACOG GL ... and I imagine there is improvement on other textures as well Think I just paid around $17 on steam for them together (L85 w/DLC in pics)

    Server Database File Issues

Anyone else running an HFB package plus who is having issues similar to mine, or any issues at all?

    Server Database File Issues

I'm ashamed to admit that I know nothing about switching databases as HFB set the thing up in the first place. Chernarus, Lingor, Namalsk and Takistan and Panthera work as they should so far as spawning vehicles. It's Taviana, Celle, and the rest that have no vehicle spawn locations in the world_vehicle section of the database. I appreciate your answer, and would also appreciate the values to input.

Tired of KoS? Do something about it!

Honestly, gamers will do as they please - for the same reasons; ditto motivations. Adversely - to RN_Max above me, I enjoy the counter KoS approach, i.e. sniping the snipers and providing anonymous cover to strangers (not without difficulties). When I declare friendly, that is exactly what I am for as long as I am on the server, barring betrayals if they happen. Just me perhaps, but I find genuinely working together with other players - without hidden agendas - to be one of the most rewarding aspects of DayZ. I have saved other players a number of times, and have had them really shocked that someone would go out of there way to aid them without expectations in return. That is the way to combat KoS from the player's side of DayZ - to take a chance and do something great for a stranger. Of course you should never cease to treat said stranger as a potential Benedict Arnold, but that's the way of the apocalypse.
  22. ^^ But now he has an interchangeable gauntlet of death dealing sharpness. The whole banditry thing is somewhat ridiculous in my opinion. I suppose if someone is in to hardcore roleplay then it makes some sense. But as a purely chosen style of long term gameplay in DayZ, I find it tragicomic. I also wonder if some gamers want to be bound and robbed and held hostage, but I digress. In a game where most players seem to want instant gratification - to just log in, gear up and kill other survivors - I expect any form of roleplay practiced will be met with extremely lackluster results in the stony face of the so many who would not "play along". Myself, I play either the "search and rescue" role or the "mountain hermit". And honestly, if another player tried to "hold me up" or "abduct me" either they or myself would die. The whole in depth bandit persona in online games is just going too far, from my point of view, but if that is what you like ... the sandbox is open.

    I have no solution?

One thing that helped a friend, which may or may not aid you is to upgrade your wireless router to one intended for gaming - if you are gaming off of/through one. Also this: http://dayzmod.com/f...t-no-downloads/ Additionally: is your interface resolution set to your desktop's native resolution? Also I would turn down HDR quality to the minimum.

    KoS, an examination

I agree with you semantically; however repercussions do exist despite the ultimate pixelated meaningless of a polygonal life lived and lost in an online game. Those - the repercussions - being the development of a bad reputation ... which admittedly most do not care about ... and the sometimes real sense of anguish one online gamer can cause another by betraying them. While the consequences of betraying your fellow stranger online are of course not as grave as such done in the 'real' world, the acts of deception and betrayal, etc. are quite real. Deceiveing and lying and betraying are the same craven behavior whether one is doing it in the physical world or the cyber. It is in my belief and opinion, a question and instance of character ... good, bad or ugly. Addendum: I misread perhaps the real meaning of the OP, that being in regards to KoS rather than the griefer schtick. Upon closer treatment of the OP I would have to admit that while KoS is not my style, it is less disturbing than the short or long term deception and betrayal mentality religiously practiced by some in DayZ. -end one-

    Hack/Cheat Situation ?

I would only comment that I have been killed by hackers more on public servers, than on private ones. I have been playing DayZ for around three months now, and the first full month or so, I never encountered a cheater; a cheater that was obvious at least. Then my luck changed after the 1.7.5.1 patch when a friend and I were forced to seek a new "home" server. We died to hackers three or four times in a few week period. At the moment I rent a private server and have thus far had a hack free existence once again. A final comment would be that on the public servers where hackers did mess with me, the admins were quick to return my gear and ban the offenders. Overall, DayZ is far more worth playing than not - from the standpoint of fear of hackers.
