I only ever found one, and it was in the tree stand between Dolina and the factory to the north.

Zombies are overpowered since patch 1.7.2 (Video as proof)
Brew78 replied to wietse02's topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
Given how far away the zombie is, I think that if you were to immediately go prone and crawl away, you'd be out of his visible range long enough that he'd lose track of you and lose aggro. Could be wrong, haven't had a lot of time to test this stuff yet. -
You break your legs with no morphine. What do YOU do?

If friends are online and nearby with morphine, ask for help and start crawling to them.If respawning/suicide is ever removed from the game, Crawl towards the nearest zombie. -
My first murder and now I feel guilty
Brew78 replied to [email protected]'s topic in New Player Discussion
I actually have a very short list of murders, and although I do remember the first, I didn't feel bad about it in any way. There were two of them on a hospital roof, there was one of me, I had open LoS with my AK, two shots and one of them dropped dead. Went to investigate, realized the other guy hadn't disco'ed and was probably aiming at the ladder, so I changed my mind and climbed back down. Got shot at close range multiple times by some random 3rd person while still on the ladder. Ah well, thats the circle of violence in Cherno. The only one I really felt bad about was the most recent one. I'm on top of one of the mountains, figuring out where to go next, prone in a pine tree. I hear commotion and gunshots, start looking around, figuring I'm dead. I see a guy climbing up a tall.. radio tower(?) with zeds in tow. He's shooting them off the ladder, and my gut says that I could maybe sneak away but maybe not. And if I tried voice comms, or shooting zombies off the ladder, he'd think I was firing at him and would be shot myself. So I took three shots with the revolver, and he had time to turn around and look at me before falling over, either passed out or dead. Due to the bullet holes, he was squirting like a sprinkler. And because of his very high altitude, it was f'ing RAINING BLOOD all over the place. It did make me feel kind of bad, not even trying to call out on direct while hiding in the tree. Knowing full well he might have friends in the area, I climbed the tower to check on the body. Took a hunting knife but he didn't really have much else that was useful to me. Hid the body to stop the blood rain, and that that kind of glitched. He sank a few feet, then stopped. Hung in midair under the platform for awhile then plummeted to the ground, fast. Vanished on impact. That being that, I took off and continued my trek. Pretty sure I broke my leg hopping a fence and got eaten, but its hard to say - my leg breaking ability is legendary. I should just stop using the "V" key altogether. -
Can Drink From the Water Taps without a Water Bottle
Brew78 replied to AllYoYens's topic in DayZ Mod Suggestions
Incidentally, I got to this thread by using the search function. Figured it was a common idea and I'd just add to an existing conversation. Either way, my suggestion would be to add a "drink" mousewheel option whenever in range of a water source that can fill a bottle. Also, empty whiskey bottles should count as a water bottle. -

To everyone that is a camper on Stary Sobor 24/7 with CZ
Brew78 replied to barros1711's topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
Er... don't go IN the barracks without first scouting the opposing hillsides maybe? You know, go the long way around, crest the hill from the back side, come up behind anyone that may be sniping the tent area? Player footsteps aren't that loud, and chances are he won't hear you if you stick to creeping. If he's staring intently at the tents and doesn't look around from time to time, the easy pickings will be *yours*, even with just a Makarov. You won't even need to loot the tents, you'll probably get some good gear right there. So honestly, you should be mining the hillside for equipment, not the tents. As pretty much everyone else in the thread has stated, this is NOT TF2! Whatever you learned there does not apply to this game. The twitch while firing may or may not be handy, but that's about it. Consider it a series of challenges. Its not meant to be fair. In this game you gotta THINK. If this sounds like too much work.... maybe this game isn't for you. That's about all I can say, as friendly and impartial as I can say it. -
Look for warehouses and barns. You'll likely find a hatchet in one of them. The very small gray structures with two doors found in towns and industrial areas (sheds, sort of) often have hatchets too. If you want to find a pistol, head to an apartment building in a city or a grocery store (which may be suicidal, as you'll likely come across other players, and cities are generally KOS). Hopping from tree stand to tree stand will eventually get you a long gun, either a shotgun or good quality rifle. Barns often have long guns too, usually a Lee Enfield (extremely powerful, but low rate of fire and VERY loud - it'll aggro every zombie nearby) or Winchester (good stuff). It sucks at the start, but just treat it like you're trying for "Silent Assassin" in Hitman.

How about a quick hack to allow meta-punishment? I've noticed that people tend to stick with the same set of servers, like NY's or Atlanta's, etc. They tend to have the same lag and similar rulesets, that sort of thing. What if someone were to disconnect while in shock or the PVP timer is on, or being a certain distance to another player, it would be announced over local/direct chat what the person's ingame handle is? If you log out in shock, you're supposed to log back in unconsious, right? Well, if there's a high likelihood that someone's going to log back in on a server that's fairly close to the one you're currently on, this would allow the aggressor to log out himself, and check the player list from the Multiplayer screen to see if he can find where the person logged back in. If he's out cold for 5 minutes, that'd let the person follow them and finish them off. Then again, if both people had shock, the Alt-F4'er would have a head start on waiting out the knockout timer on the new server. Maybe someone disconnecting in range of other people with PVP timers would clear your opponents' shock?

For long guns, I've had the most luck with the AK's, although I was severely under-impressed with the Kobra I found. The other AK's I'd picked up were able to 1-shot the zombies, this one required 2+ shots, which actually led to me getting eaten since I was too sparing with ammo, expecting them to drop when they weren't going to. Found an M16 once, but it got disappeared by a backpack glitch before I could equip it. Tried to put it in a backpack that didn't have enough space. Oops. But in a pinch, nothing wrong with the Winchester! All in all though, I'd say I've had the best overall results using the good ol' Revolver. Ammo's fairly plentiful, the thing's accurate as hell, and although it only holds 6 at a time, it reloads pretty fast. I might say I like the M1911 the best (its one of my favs IRL) but I've only ever found one, and was killed before ever firing it.

On my way out the door last night, came across a kid's bike parked in front of my condo. Briefly thought "Yes!" and considered riding off on it. -
My first murder and now I feel guilty
Brew78 replied to [email protected]'s topic in New Player Discussion
YYyyyyeah, some dude sneaks up prone behind me with a hatchet, he's getting a bullet to the head. And I wouldn't feel bad about it in any way. If I hit the torso and knocked him out, I might bandage him so he stops bleeding. That way, when he wakes up and starts to crawl around, I can get better aim and put a bullet in his head like I meant to the first time. If I had a blood bag, I might transfuse him while he's out. That way, I get some +humanity (don't forget, the variable is still there) and will know that I won't kill him by shooting him in the leg first, to prevent him from running away. Just shooting someone doesn't teach any lesson. Gotta be creative. Maybe not "drag to a pen of barbed wire and throw cans at him" creative, but... -
Yeah, that's pretty lame. But there ARE honest players out there. Hell, one of my first 1.7.2 experiences was finding my first Kobra and M20 right near each other. I was like "schweeet!" Then I got knocked out by a zombie and from almost full health watched as a group ran up and started eating. I died. And yeah, was kinda mad. More disappointed, I think. But... I took it like the game intended. And I know I'm not alone. Shock was introduced to punish players who log out after being shot. Logging back in is supposed to KO them for what.. 5 minutes? My suggestion for the disco exploit would be to either report over direct chat the ingame name of whoever just vanished so you could maybe follow them to another server (a lot of people tend to stick with the same batch, like the Atlantas, or NY's) and finish them off, OR... for the next 5 minutes or so, lock their next login to the same server regardless of which one they select from the list. Wouldn't that be funny, they pop off, immediately log into a random server, pop back on the one they just left, unconscious :D

Same effect as a slow bleed. Last time I was that hungry, it was like 100 health every couple seconds. Been awhile, don't remember exactly. And you'll have to check the patch notes, but I believe it was changed around a bit in regards to dying from hunger and whether blood transfusions can repair starvation.

Can't stress this enough - you can NOT GET ATTACHED TO YOUR EQUIPMENT IN THIS GAME. Seriously.. how is losing your equipment to a glitch or to a random environment death effectively any different than catching a random sniper bullet to the head? You can and will die at any random point in this game from any number of hostile entities. You'll get yourself a lot less upset if you just categorize "glitches" as a hostile entity in and of itself. I don't want to just throw out a glib "nyaaaa, this is aaalllphaaa", but... you know. Its not even a beta yet. Getting mad at losing stuff to a bug in an alpha is like getting mad at getting wet in a kayak. Sure, you *usually* stay dry but sometimes you'll get splashed. Or dribbled on by your paddle. Or capsized by a wake. Just kinda goes with the territory. Save the anger for Retail.

Need advice on choosing a new graphics card
Brew78 replied to khknight's topic in New Player Discussion
I bought one of these around a year ago and have been *very* happy with its performance: http://xfxforce.com/...-695A-CNFC.aspx I don't upgrade all that often, so when I do, I try to get something that'll last awhile. This one is powerful enough that if I need a graphics boost, I can always buy a second one and crossfire it, and it'll more than likely outperform anything new on the market anyway. And maybe the price would have come down a bit. Actually, looking on Newegg, the price really hasn't come down all that much yet for that series, $300 down to $250.. Either way, its really a matter of figuring out where your priorities are. Cheap now, high performance now, optimal point on the cost-to-performance curve, etc. Take a look at this chart, for example: http://www.videocard.../gpu_value.html . As of right now, my video card is rating maybe middle of the pack because although it performs well, its expensive. The only advice I might give on brand (AMD vs Nvidia) is that Nvidia does tend to have better driver support, and fewer driver related issues. I've owned both and never really had any problems with one or the other, but I do like the "Nvidia Control Panel" a lot better than the "ATI Catalyst Center". Actually... that's not 100% true... I have had some instances in DayZ where certain areas of Cherno, or sometimes along a railroad track, the graphics will get corrupted and the video turns into a bizarre Triangle World, radiating from the center of the screen. Hasn't happened in awhile though. And it may be a glitch in the Arma2 Engine. I dunno. Haven't seen it in any other game.. Anyway, your best bet is to give yourself a max budget, figure out where you want to be on the price/performance curve, pick a card, look up some reviews, and see if it fits within the budget you set for yourself. Same process as any other piece of computer equipment. -

For some reason, mention of a tent fort immediately made me think of Fort Kickass

As I understand it, the way the game is set up, everyone is on the same "team" as far as the ARMA game engine goes. Depending on how the server parameters are set, you may or may not share map notations with other people on your team. Which is to say, on the first server you were on, someone else on the server had posted "go here", more than likely in hopes that you or someone else would walk directly into his crosshairs.

1.7.2 Opinion thread. All your opinions, good and bad, go here.
Brew78 replied to Denuth's topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
I haven't been able to play all that much 1.7.2 yet, but I just wanted to comment again on the "zombie virus" since a lot of people seem to know know.. The zombies in this game are "infected", they aren't "dead". They're the hyper-aggressive "28 Days Later" variety. So while having lost their mind, they are still in fact human. They've lost any sense of pain or self-preservation so they pull their bodies to the limit 100% of the time, as if it were permanent adrenaline-fueled fight-or-flight. -

Ok, I admit, this made me chuckle -
Meh. I was expecting a lucky shot where four people lined up and a single shot took them all out. This is just some douche sniping into Elektro. Yawn.

DayZ 1.7.1 Discussion - Others will be locked/deleted!
Brew78 replied to Tigerr13's topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
So at this point, I don't know if I really have just had freakishly bad luck with weapon spawns. It often takes me a really long time to find one, but lately I've seen loads of Winchesters and Dinner Bells- I mean Enfields in barns, and even found an AK and M16 in tree stands. Never got to equip the M16 though - tried to put it in a patrol pack and it got deleted. Stupid 8-slot backpack. And hatchet spawns are kind of irregular. I've gone entire play sessions without seeing one and in other places there's multiple hatchets in the same room! Multiple watches spawn in grocery stores all the time, I've found a map or two, still only ever found one compass. Revolvers seem fairly common in houses and grocery stores too. I like the revolver, the ammo's easy to find/convert. Only ever found one M1911, they seem pretty rare. So... yeah. Like I said, I don't know if there were some kind of server settings tweaked, maybe a database variable. Or maybe my shitty luck is finally starting to turn. But my rate of finding weapons has gone up dramatically. Which isn't to say I've found a lot of guns, just that the past week has had more guns than the entire prior month combined. And random kind of funny side note - ever since I started really hitting hospitals to load up on morphine and use up a fair amount of backpack space to store it, my rate of leg breaking has gone way down too. I'm not playing any differently, its weird. I still try to hop over things, I still go through doors and climb ladders and stairs. I do still get the odd leg break from single punches, but environmental breaks are nowhere near the rate that it has been. Its not like I'm just noticing them less due to morphine either - I'm usually on Mumble with friends and the number of times I've said "Yep, broke my leg again" has in fact gone down. I dunno. My luck just seems abnormally streaky. *shrug*
