  1. I haven't found any weapons or ammo yet in my hunting stand excursions. Been avoiding towns for now and focusing on woodland survival. So far I've found a few cans of beans, a few cans of soda, and a roll of toilet paper. And maybe some random junk, like empty cans. Everything else I have is from the prior patch. I also haven't played for very long at a time yet with the new patch, so there's probably not enough data points to draw any real conclusions. Then again, I've never really had much luck finding weapons in hunting stands so I guess its working as intended? Other observations - zombies seem to spawn near power lines now. And are very aggressive and seem a bit faster than before. But are still befuddled by hills and are easy to kill if you have the higher ground.
  2. Ok, random thought.. A big argument in favor of 3rd person is that it fills in the gaps that aren't possible to emulate in FPV. Call it peripheral vision, sensation of something hitting the back of your body, small barely audible bits of noise not generated in game (like breathing for example) that you might pick up on and "sense" that someone was near, maybe even call it personal space or a 6th sense. So.. what if in TPV, vision was somehow limited? Like, a fog or focus blur or some other distortion effect that leaves an area of some radius perfectly visible around the player, with the video getting harder to see the further away it is? Things like using TPV to look around corners would be substantially less useful. And it could be driven by the client, offloading the work from the server. What pops into mind when I think about an analogy is the "darklight vision" they had in Planetside that you could use to detect cloaked players. It effectively cut off your normal vision anywhere other than your immediate surroundings, but any cloaked nearby units would glow brightly. Sure, it'd be hackable since its on the client machine, but it'd be harder to do than run a simple script like in the Arma2 engine, and might be detectable with whatever hack prevention is in place. Anyway, just a thought.
  3. I don't understand all this concern over "Someone gets killed, they can respawn right next to their body, loot it, and take revenge!!1!1one!11!" I mean.. the logic just seems faulty. If you get killed and respawn in the same area, the only thing you're going to accomplish is getting your ass killed *again*. What, you think they're going to leave your body there and run away so you can have all your stuff back? That they're not going to loot you of anything useful? That they're not going to camp your body if they think you'll be back in the near future? And what was YOUR plan? To fend off the person who killed you (not to mention potential zombie spawns) with... a bottle of painkillers and a bandage? If you want to cite travel time between your spawn location and other people you want to team up with as an issue, then fine, whatever. Some people enjoy the whole "running simulator" aspect of the game. But really, pretending these things called "spawn campers" don't exist? Come on.
  4. I've been full-health knocked out before. Spawned near Balota, made my way to the hunting stands, was hopping over the sandbags by the road, a zomber sprinted up and BAM - one punch KO, slowly got eaten while watching that PAINFULLY slow hourglass tick away one row of pixels every few seconds.
  5. My current guy (on a private hive) is on borrowed time in a big way. He spawed in Solni (that horrible spawn on the east coast), found no equipment anywhere, and ran west over the course of a few days, hitting every hunting stand and still finding nothing other than soda and glow sticks. Eventually I got into the northwest with a Lee Enfield and actually found a fully intact chopper at the Old Fields spawn. For some reason I was carrying a jerry can on me and was able to give it just a lil fuel to get near a fuel source. Flew east to Gorka with the fuel flashing the whole time. I was out of time and had to land NOW, so I eased it down as best I could. It was on a bit of a slope but I was pretty sure it would be ok. Just to be sure, I put on auto-hover to make sure it was steady. Well, auto-hover didn't like the slope very much and blew me right into a tree. BOOM Considering I usually get the full 5-minute knockouts from full health by a zombie that aggro'ed and is punching through a wall, imagine my astonishment when not only did I survive, but I got a quick 5-second KO and was able to bandage in time to survive. Got away and was not killed by any secondary explosions. Was kind of bummed at the loss of the chopper, but *shrug* what're you gonna do? So now I'm near death and head west again. At this point I have an M16A2 and some matches and eat whatever wildlife I could find. Manage to get into the NWAF barracks undetected (i'm guessing no one was there), but no equipment. Actually, I think I might've picked up a G17 there. I log out, knowing full well its a dumb idea. Log back in and am still alive. Can't see anyone around. Start to look for loots. I see a guy running into the barracks. I yell to them over local. The guy's friendly and lowers his rifle. I do too. We chat over local a little. Now.. I don't remember seeing this in patch notes anywhere, but I *swear* zombies aggro on local VOIP now. We get swarmed out of nowhere. He takes a couple shots, I end up fiddling with trying to raise my rifle, double clicking ctrl, hitting F, reloading, everything, its just being a pain in the ass. I switch to smoke grenade to throw one down the hall and out the front door. Bam, knockout punch. I hear the other guy say "Don't die, Brew!" and lots of commotion. Then I hear two different voices doing the "I'm getting eaten" yell, so I figure he's down too. I wake up and stand and yep, he's dead. And like half the zombies vanish. Despawned now that they got their primary target? He didn't have much on him but I did get a compass out of it. Felt kinda bad I couldn't save him. So I'm once again near death and trying to flee the NWAF. And I do. Which is an unrealistic thing to survive in and of itself. I run into the wilderness to stock up on wild game and come across a f'ing FULLY LOADED white offroad pickup truck. Well, its fully loaded for repairs, it had no weapons. Lots of chopper parts. I haul ass into the wilderness and set up a camp. I decide to check out Devil's Castle and there's a chopper there! I bolt on some scrap metal and suddenly I'm the main course. I hop in the truck and play some Carmageddon, but these things just keep spawning. I spend a bunch of time with this elaborate lead-them-away-and-drive-back routine, but I eventually get two spare metals bolted on and three jerry cans of fuel in the tank, but the thing won't start. The MROT and engine are still buggered. But it won't show up in the repair menu, no matter what angle I look at this thing. I gotta give up after so long of no luck, which sucks because that was a lot of risk with no reward. I'm down parts and gas and getting really low on blood again - a single knockout or pass out would have ended me. So I head back to the camp in the wilderness, pick off a couple pigs, eat me some bacon, start to see some color in my screen again, and wonder how the hell this guy is still alive! I haven't been playing very carefully, I have rifle that's kind of hard to use the ironsights on, hunting stands have not been all that kind to me.. All I hope for at this point is that the truck is still there when I log back in. Otherwise I got a bit of a run ahead of me.

How dangerous are the zombies REALLY

They're more dangerous now than before, for sure. Aggro a lot more and appear to hit a LOT harder. The intermittent and seemingly random knockout system is what generally causes any rage that I acquire. There's nothing quite like having a zombie warp speed teleport sprint to your location, knock you out from full health, have it be one of the LONG knockouts where you can do nothing but stare at the hourglass slowly vanishing one line of pixels at a time, knowing full well you won't be waking up. Especially now that they hit so much harder.
  7. True, but.. its outside my skill range, I guess. I spent some time aiming at something with the 1st person crosshair, then ironsights/scope, then the 3rd person crosshair, to try to find a correlation. It seems like in general the 3rd person crosshair is up and left compared to what you're actually aiming at, but it varies greatly as distance changes. I'm terrible at judging distance IRL and I'm not any better at it ingame, so hitting a target at any distance in 3rd person is bordering on impossible for me. I still do the 1st/3rd aim check when potentially about to enter combat in case I have to shoot "NOW", but I usually stay in 1st person for that anyway. Either way, the point of my post is that the guy being inaccurate with the hatchet may be unknowingly swinging over the zomber's shoulder. Or maybe he's not, he could be in 1st person already for all I know. *shrug*

What's changed with the loot spawning

I found one of the new AK's in a tree stand, but with no ammo. I left it because it wouldn't fit in the starter pack and I already had a CZ with ammo. I later came across a badly damaged UAZ that had an Enfield and a FAL magazine in the trunk. I left those, too. I'd found the CZ in a barn along with 1 magazine and I think the only other main gun I've found so far was an MP5 in a fire station with 2 mags. I think I found a revolver and 1911 in a grocery store with 1 box of ammo between them. The major change I've seen so far with weapon spawns is that ammo is way more scarce and less likely to spawn alongside the weapon it goes into. I've never been all that lucky with weapon spawns in the first place (was amazed to come across one of the new weapons, actually), so I can't comment on if they're up or down.
  9. Regarding missing with the hatchet a lot... are you by any chance in 3rd person mode? If so, that's the problem. The crosshairs and reticles in 3rd person mode are inaccurate. You need to switch back to 1st person to hit anything with any real repeatability. If/when you find a gun, right-clicking will usually zoom into ironsights/optics for you automatically from 3rd person, but if you plan on shooting unscoped or without ironsights you do need to be in 1st person. Also, the vast majority of all matches I've found have been in grocery stores. They often have a revolver or M1911 in there, too. Sometimes even a backpack or tent. But yeah, I got some of those Diamond matches in the small box at home, and every time I see the damn things on the table I get a little jolt and want to loot them.
  10. I will agree that the main rule that will keep you sane in this game is to NEVER get attached to your gear. I will disagree that "gear is so easy to get, its not even fun to get good stuff". To this day, I've still never found (although may have been given) NVG, range finder, either .50 cal rifle, L85, FAL, Bezino, and any number of other rare items I can't think of since I rarely see them. This is on the main vanilla hive, not counting private/modified servers. I've found.. maybe one each of camo clothes and gillie suits. I looted an SVD camo from a tent I found once.. Was guardian-angel sniping Elektro and lost that one when someone teleported (or logged) in and capped my ass. I was doing alt+look sweeps all the time, too. I think this death was the one when I realized I'd really taken to heart that all equipment is temporary.. I sighed, said "oh well", and respawned. Never had that much gear before either, was rocking a gillie and SD pistol! Its not like I haven't spent time doing hunting stand tours or lurking around barracks, either. And I've been to a number of crashed choppers. I don't know, maybe I just have bad luck. A few patches back in the 1.6 or 1.7 era, I thought the loot/spawn table was outright broken when I found something like one Makarov over the course of a week and a half.. Either way, yeah. People who complain that good stuff is too easy to get should just consider themselves lucky and enjoy it. Your luck *could* have swung the other way.

L85 Should it stay or go

Here's the thing - NVG's already ARE extremely rare. Problem is, script kiddies just spawn themselves in a set, get killed, are looted, respawn, spawn in another set, and so it goes. They're artificially polluting the economy. Think about it.. how many people you know who have had NVG's have actually found them, like at a barracks or heli crash? And how many have been looted off a corpse? My personal experience (which I'm not claiming is the same as anyone else's) is that I've never actually seen a set spawn. Any I've ever had have been given to me, looted off a corpse, or were part of your starting inventory on a private hive.

L85 Should it stay or go

Agreed. I was thinking that a thermal scope by itself would still be great for spotting, just remove the ability to fire while using it.
  13. You know, I was kind of thinking that myself. But.. given that he said you have the option of "how long to cook", I wasn't sure what sort of implementation that would be. Like... if you cook it too long, does it become charred and inedible? What sort of time scale is it:? Does every 10 seconds ingame represent 1 minute of real world cooking time? I guess I'm just curious how the variable cooking time will be implemented.
  14. I just cooked a large bird using a probe thermometer to keep track of internal temperature. Way back when I worked grilling burgers, I had to check the internal temp multiple times a day to make sure it was "safe". Reading this post got me thinking, will there be any way to check or measure food temp? Maybe a battery-powered probe thermometer like the one I have? Also, battery powered things got me thinking - is there any plan to make battery powered things die over time? And in that vein, are there any plans to recharge batteries? I got one of these and although very slow (especially now that we're heading towards winter) it does work pretty well.
  15. "Tons" of instances, hmm? Care to quantify? And whatever number you come up with, what percent of these "tons" of people compare to the rest of the general population? You and others in this thread seem to forget that when talking about numbers you NEED to be able to differentiate between totals and percents. You can say "Wow, look, there were 1000 instances of something", but if there are a billion instances of something NOT happening, it means a whole hell of a lot less than somewhere else where there was only 100 instances, but also only several thousand instances of it not happening. In short, your "tons of instances" is totally worthless and meaningless. Also, chacha is full of shit. The apocalypse goes down, I guarandamntee that cooperation will start looking a LOT more preferable to trying to Rambo your way through whats left of your pathetically short life
  16. The skins shouldn't necessarily be taken *out*, but perhaps functionality tweaked. I have absolutely no idea how this tweaking should be done, nor the requirements to implement said tweaking. But a way to differentiate an unwarranted kill from an accident from self-defense would really be optimal IMO. I'm reminded of something Penn Jillette said.. yesterday actually, on a show I was listening to in the car. The discussion was on religion and atheism, and he was complaining about people claiming a lack of religion and belief in an afterlife as also being a lack of any kind of moral compass. That without desire for heaven or fear of hell, what's preventing you from just going out and shooting people in the face? His reply was something to the effect of "Well, what's making *you* WANT to go shoot people in the face, you crazy psychotic fuck?!" Point being, in the case of a "normal" person who happened to survive the zombie outbreak due to luck or immunity or whatever, killing a bunch of people is going to take a toll and it will show to others you encounter. The number of true sociopaths who would take no toll is a fairly low percentage, and IMO can be ignored for the purpose of coding this game. I don't believe that assuming everyone on this particular territory is "normal" is unreasonable. Sure, you can argue that a sociopath would have an easier time surviving, but whatever, its still going to be a low percent of people. I suppose, however, that if your life span and/or murder count reaches a certain threshold.. maybe you can revert back to a normal skin, having become a true sociopath? Or maybe you could go to Bandit Level 2, having turned into a total lunatic? Maybe have a coin flip where you go one way or the other?

    Day Z Videos

I'm kind of known in my group for... lack of bone strength, you could say. Need to drink some more milk, I guess. Note the immediate comment after I say "Aw!" ..and that he does in fact call it "Brewphine" May as well change my avatar to a set of crutches. Maybe a leg cast..
  18. I have to admit that what little game time I have has been going to BL2 (assuming a friend of mine isn't logged into DayZ and needing a teammate). I do still read the forums though, and very much look forward to whatever updates are posted. Threads like this make me happy.

I had the disk drive. Still took a long time to load anything, and I credit the C64 with developing a lot of the patience that I have with waiting for things to load, and not just like... restart the computer when your web page doesn't come up immediately. That thing made some very distinct noises, like that purring sound when seeking. Or the clacking when it may or may not give up with an error. I still play "Lords of Conquest" sometimes on an emulator. With music off, usually. Took forever to load the songs, and they'd halt execution until they were done playing. Really fun strategy game though, and the randomized maps kept it fresh.
  20. Had a case of ethical dilemma, and was looking for some opinions. So.. there's a server that I typically log into, but as of late its had fewer and fewer players online. The other night, it was pretty much just me except for two guys that logged in, one of which was immediately kicked for a vehicle spawn script. I quit pretty quickly because I didn't know what the other guy's deal was... Anyway, I figured that since I'm all samsquanched out and even got me an SVD camo, I might as well head on over to the outskirts of Cherno to get in position for some rooftop newb-killer countersniping. Is getting into position on an empty server considered ghosting, even if its your "regular", and even if you don't have a specific target in mind? (ie, you're not trying to get behind someone you're trying to kill)

I started on the 2600. I'm also not quite middle-aged yet. Just approaching the mid-30's. I am, however, starting to feel my age and have come to accept that to kids I'm simply lumped in with other "old people". Its kinda weird. Oh, also, as posted in another thread, I still feel that (C64) is one of the best chiptunes of all time. Every now and then I can still hear SID sounds in various modern songs, so I know there's some of us still out there...

    Forum downtime

That was way less than 5 hours.
  23. Haven't actually logged back in yet; I don't get to play all that often these days. I hope to get on tonight though. I guess my question is about whether intent is a factor. This is the server I would have logged into anyway, its not like I sought out an empty one just to move from point A to point B. I logged in, none of my friends were online at the time to log in with me, so I figured a leisurely stroll to the nearest city would be nice, popping some zombies along the way to get in some practice. If there's any karma to be paid back though, I figure I'll be shot dead upon login. Its not like I found a new and innovative sniper location to log out at :D I mean.. there's a chance people will already be there, and if I saw a ghillie suit with large rifle log in right next to me, I'm not sure I'd stop to ask intent either. I suppose I *could* log into an empty server and retreat further back into the woods and make a slow approach, but then that definitely WOULD be ghosting. I've made my bed, I'll lie in it.
  24. There are some groups of servers that share a common hive. My guess would be that you happened across three of the "villayer" servers.
