December Round-up: ༼ つ ◕_◕ ༽つ GIVE SA
Tempus (DayZ) replied to SmashT's topic in Mod Announcements & Info
Don't speak of the devil. Please! Also, Rocket talking about the group of testers on reddit: So, yeah, if you're feeling down you can comfort yourself with the thought of it being tedious, annoying work and be happy about the fact you don't spoil your fun for when it releases in a more refined state. -

On topic though: I'm very happy they don't make an expensive alpha and lower the price afterwards, but I guess I already ranted about that in the Planetary Annihilation topic. *ugh* Also: Searching hosters for NZ DayZ servers does mean it's getting really close now to alpha release, doesn't it? Doesn't it? -

Go donate some blood, they check your blood type, values, they even check for diseases for free. And you do something good! Edit: That's how it is around here, at least. Don't want to say something wrong, but seriously, it's a good thing to do. -

Seriously though, did you guys and girls see this? Q: Perhaps you could do a stream tomorrow to give us a better idea of what to expect from the alpha because it seems like you don't want to surprise us. Rocket: Fair point. I should do something (perhaps a stream) soon to discuss progress and demonstrate the challenges we've solved and the ones we still face. I would love that. Rocket is doing an awesome job keeping us informed at the moment, seeing things for ourselves is something different though. -
Another Quick Update 5 December 2013
Tempus (DayZ) replied to rocket's topic in Mod Announcements & Info
So... when does Season 2 of The Walking Dead Adventure finally release? Just kidding! Looking forward to the alpher release! A lot of people are very eager to see it released, but honestly, take your time. I know it won't be released in a perfect state, but it won't be free either and as you charge for it there are specific standards the game must meet, in my opinion at least. -

Agreed, but on the other hand, maybe that's one of the reasons for the massive performance issue with zombies at the moment. -

Are you guys aware there is a discussion on this whole mask-thing in these here forums, in which Rocket even explained his point of view? If not, here you go: http://forums.dayzgame.com/index.php?/topic/153278-dean-sort-it-out-man-losing-your-way/ I already explained my feelings in detail in that topic. On this topic: Still seems to be pretty heavy testing going on, I hope performance and stability are doing alright. 2013 or 2014 release, nobody knows, I got some sweet games in the Steam sale that will keep me entertained until standalone releases either way! (Still very much looking forward to it, just saying) -

Fair enough. A great variety of people playing the mod right now has led to a plethora of different maps, mods of the mod and general ways of playing the mod, though, somewhat losing focus of vision. I think a lot of players are looking forward to a more no-nonsense, down-to-earth and survival-heavy focus of the standalone, which seems to be generally confirmed by devs and testers. Those people might be confused by the addition of seemingly goofy and immersion-breaking items I suppose, as it just contradicts their expectations of the standalone's shifted focus. Either way, I'm excited to see how it'll turn out in the end! -

Well, these kinds of masks are added as easter eggs – and honestly it's the purpose of these things to break immersion. To me personally, it really depends on the game with those. In something like Fallout or Grand Theft Auto, where there is a very cynical, satirical feel to things, easter eggs and references don't annoy me at all, I quite enjoy them. But if games appear to be very serious, no-nonsense or realistic, the silliness of immersion-breaking easter eggs annoys me more than anything else as I don't want to be taken out of the game like that. There's nothing confirmed about the addition or rarity of these masks and there are more important things to get worked up over, so it doesn't need to be dramatized. However, I do hope the overall feel of DayZ standalone (not regarding mechanics or gameplay) won't diverge from that of DayZ mod too much. -

I actually agree with you, I'm not very happy to see that kind of stuff either. To me, it seems rather silly and doesn't really suit the feel of the game. But I'm optimistic enough that I can't see them getting carried away with it, making it feel like a WarZ-style hat/mask fest, which would be sad indeed. You should work on your phrasing and homophobia though. It's not helping your cause I assume. Edit: The horse beat me to it. -

There seems to be heavy testing going on at the moment: http://steamdb.info/graph/221100/ Hope the tests go well, everything proves to work alright and alpha release is imminent. :) -
I disagree, especially if character appearance and gameplay are as heavily intertwined as they are in DayZ. But even if they weren't, special ingame items for certain editions in general are absolute horseshit in my humble opinion. To me, cosmetics and aesthetics (and character individualization in particular) are universal and important parts of every video game. I never really got the "purely cosmetic" argument for anything other than free-to-play games who live on selling this kind of stuff. If you want to buy a "special edition" because you are a collector or a die-hard fan, cool. You shouldn't need a reward other than a presentable box, some cool goodies and the satisfaction of supporting your game, though (the latter being the only reasonable argument for any "special edition" of a digitally distributed game). It would be a very thin line between including exclusive outfits and individually charging for special pieces of clothing. There are enough full-price games that charge you for something that's already technically included or won't let you play certain game modes unless you pre-ordered them. I for one find this to be a very sad and dangerous trend.

That still happens from time to time, don't let it discourage you. Trust me, it used to be much worse in the beginning. If it occurs repeatedly, try to check out a different server. Cool, have fun! And don't get attached to your gear too much. ;)

Also, these from reddit: So they are pretty silent, but they do still exist. Also, no release date there. #conspiracyitshabbening

I like almost all of the developers' ideas for the standalone and I'm looking forward to it while doing a pretty decent job at keeping my excitement and expectations under control. As what I've seen from the game so far isn't final at all and I haven't been able to play it myself, I'll have to abstain from giving my "opinion" on it for now. Other than that, this is exactly how I feel about the standalone:
-
Check out this pinned thread, it has everything you need to know. Most importantly, this written guide and these videos, if you prefer that. Some of it has to be outdated by now, but I'm sure most of it is still accurate and important to know. But what I'd honestly really suggest is doing the basic tutorials of Arma 2 and Arma 2 Operation Arrowhead (you know, the games you actually bought :P ) to cover the fundamentals of controls like movement, inventory management and using a weapon. Other than that, you can discover and learn everything you need to know by playing the mod and experiencing it for yourself. :)

Welcome and have fun!

I don't get this at all. Why would using an optional auto-run button automatically make you lean back and stop observing your environment? You can lean back and be inattentive while holding down one button, just as you can carefully watch your surroundings and be on your guard while using an auto-run mechanic. Therefore I would like to have this option as well (and I only play Vanilla DayZ). I don't think its absence adds anything to immersion or difficulty, it only makes things more tedious (in regards to controls, not gameplay mind you), which is never a good thing in my opinion. Auto-run button ≠ Fast Travel mechanic.

Because they tend to be assholes who treat their food like the average DayZ forumer does information regarding the standalone.
-
Honestly, I'm glad those aren't meant for the standalone. I'm not against adding a larger variety of animals at all, but I do think there are more important priorities. It doesn't mean they aren't adding them somewhere along the line. For the time being, they are working on something more substantial than cats and horses I think.
