You could try DaiZy. It's a single player mod of dayz. I've started playing it since hackers have become so rampant. You can play with or without ai survivors and bandits. There is also a base building system implemented where you can use wood, wires, sandbags, etc to build buildings for bases. I also like being able to save my game and not worry about losing my camp or vehicles due to glitchy server restarts.

Don't forget you start with a flashlight. It is easy to spot from a distance so take care how you use it.

Military areas are also often dangerous. As a new player I suggest barns for starter weapons. You can usually find a shotgun, enfield, or crossbow in them. When you get a better handle of the game or on lower populated servers check the military tents in cherno or starry. The best loot in the game is found in helicopter crash sites. They usually have billowing black smoke making it easy to find.

I'm looking to join a more realistic group to play with too. I'm 26 and normally play evenings after work (est time zone). Send me a pm if you get something going.
