Binding a player to one server?

Server offline? Server out of date? Can't play! No thanks.

    225 km2

Who uses that notation? I thought metric units notations were pretty standard and I have always km^2 defined "square kilometers." (See my screenshot above).
  3. Oh you're totally right; my bad. Although damn, 0.89% chance for a pile and 0.99% chance it will have morphine? That's a 0.0088% chance that any given residential or office loot pile will hold morphine! You will find it faster crawling to the nearest hospital...

By the way, 100m is approximately 20s of run time at full speed. So you can calculate run times: Cross map in a straight line: 15,000m = 50 minutes Cross map diagonally: 21,213.2m = ~71 minutes Of course, no two interesting points on the map lie at those distances. Zeloogorsk to Berezino is about 13,000m or about 43 minutes dead run.

  6. Google 'dayz loot cheat sheet' and read it. It draws directly from the latest files in the mod itself. It will be more accurate and more up to date than the wiki. I promise. Morphine spawns in 'medical' and 'hospital' type loot piles which only spawn in hospital building types or at very low rates in military and barracks types. The wiki is probably authored by players who, as I've stated, will have found plenty of morphine in other buildings as players roam around and leave it lying there because their inventory is full. Remember we used to have 1000s of morphine pouring into the game every second as new players spawned, now it only comes from loot piles. People are just realizing how rare it is...

Okay, am I being trolled now? Or are we just getting really lucky and all the people who haven't taken geometry in middle school yet are finding this thread at once?

    I love this thread already.
  10. Yes. You know how in walking dead peope's loyalties to each other are constantly put to the test' date=' up to and including killing each other just for a chance at surviving a little longer? Do you remember when they encounter other survivors whose intentions they are unsure of? You know how those are the most compelling parts of the story, those tense moments when you as the reader/watcher are also unaware of what's going to happen? Yes. Do you remember the part in 28 Days Later when they finally arrive at the military base and supposed safety, only to realize that the men inside cannot be trusted in any way? They grow suspicious, and then fearful, finally culminating in sexual violence and the iconic scene in the movie which is not zombie-on-human but human-on-human violence. Do you get it? That a central theme there is that humans in this situation would be every bit as dangerous, savage and unpredictable as the infected? That's, like, a central theme to the entire film and something rocket has captured incredibly well in just a short period of time. Did you read The Road? Did you get to the parts where people eat each other to survive? Did you get to the parts where they encountered other humans and were so afraid that at one point they inadvertantly murder a man in fear for their own safety? Remember? Once again we see the theme of uncertainty, and inhumanity that results form the struggle for survival and fear for ones wellbeing. Okay, so what? Does everyone have to play the game exactly like you in order for you to enjoy it? Why not find people who think like you, group up with them, set some goals and begin accomplishing them. The other people in the game, the ones who are completely free to play the game they want to play, will make things more interesting for you and your friends in a lot of ways. Let them. It's not a bad thing if you have to play strategically or think about your own personal safety before you go wandering off into the wilderness. There's not?
  11. No. Morphine spawns in hospitals, medical crates and at a very low percentage in military buildings (including deer stands). You will not find morphine in residential buildings (apartments, grocery stores) or industrial ones. Any morphine you found in these buildings in the past was left there by someone else who probably dropped it to pick up another item. You can google 'dayz loot cheat sheet' and see all spawn percentages for each type of building in the game up to date with the latest version.
  12. Right. But who do you join in 3rd part chats' date=' and how? And can you trust them? And are they the sorts of people you want to spend time with, and have watching your back on a regular basis? Are you even comfortable speaking on TS or Vent with a stranger? These are all challenges, questions, and obstacles you must face because of the mechanic rocket has put in front of you. A much more interesting and complex question than "Can you press the / key on your keyboard?" Everyone keeps bringing up 3rd party chat programs like they're a trump card. Like "Oh it's about realism but people will just circumvent that." But rocket never said it was about realism. I don't think it is. I think it's about taking chat out of the hands of the UI and putting it into your hands. YOU figure it out. Take on the challenge and come up with a solution that works for you because the game is not going to provide one to you on a silver platter. It's really not nonsensical, though. I provided the sense right there along with my post. An entirely new survivor you can trust to watch your back is much, much, much, much more valuable in terms of survival than ammunition is. So communication - your route to linking up with other survivors - is a tool that is at least as, if not more, important than ammunition in the game. So comparing "unlimited ammunition" to "unlimited communication" is very accurate. I know that breaks people's comfort zone because they're so used to thinking of CHAT as something separate that they get in addition to GAME and it's just there to help them organize their play and pass the time when they're bored. Well, rocket says fuck that. He says effective communication is PART of the game now and you have to work for it. It's not free anymore. And that's pretty awesome.
  13. Can server owners give unlimited ammo? Can they grant permanent relief from hunger or thirst? Why should server owners have power over one of the most powerful tools in the game' date=' the ability to communicate with your fellow survivors? [b']rocket is taking communication out of the realm of interface and into the realm of game play mechanic. It is honestly unprecedented in the world of online gaming and we should all be hailing the risk he is taken and keep an open mind about the kinds of scenarios that will arise as a result. Please? Can we, please? Just give it a few weeks. A month. Try it out and see what happens before you start treating it like it's just another interface element again. You're supposed to be afraid. Welcome to DayZ. Now, find ways to work through that fear. Triumph over it. You will thank yourself and it will be so much more satisfying than had rocket just done the work for you.
  14. Okay. I'll pause the personal attacks and calmly explain why I am being hostile. Read the three quotes above, in sequence, and think momentarily about what they say. You posted a video in which, by your own admission, you are not trying to survive. However, based on the fact of your death, you make a forum post claiming it is "necessary" that the design of the game be fundamentally altered in such a way as to permit you to act in this way with impunity, knowing ahead of time whether the person in the video is going to act in the way that they do. It's like trying to play basketball with a bowling ball and then going to the head of the NBA and saying "You need to make the hoops shorter and the floor should be made of rubber." Like, okay, we could do that. We could. Definitely. But, instead, why don't you try actually playing the game in a manner consistent with its intent and then we will discuss whether or not you feel those alterations are appropriate? Do you see how the situations are analogous? And why, having read your thread headline and then watched your movie that I, as someone who is so in love with this game and so afraid that people like you with your incessant demands for asinine changes might spoil it before it has a chance to blossom, might get a little hostile and perhaps tell you where you can stuff your little video? I apologize for being harsh. But, you deserved it. :)
  15. If you did not intend to engage him and did not know his intentions, why are you running toward him in the open instead of taking cover and trying to use direct communications to make contact and ascertain his intent? Why are you that close to someone whose intentions you have not verified? Why would you turn your back on someone whose intentions you have not verified? Why did you make no attempt yourself to indicate that you were friendly and weren't yourself about to turn around and start firing at any moment? Why are you running along the coastline at spawn instead of directly inland to cover, supplies and much more likely survival scenarios? Failing all of these things, why are you surprised you got your careless little brain pierced like a pig on a spit? What do you expect when you run around like a linebacker, completely exposed, totally unprotected and completely unaware when there are potentially hostile players in the area? And why, please oh sweet mother tell me why. Why for one single motherfucking second do you think that the game should help you clean up the ridiculous mess that is your game play by holding your hand and pointing out in giant red letters who you need to avoid and who you can go charging past like a mutt in heat in search of your next eminent and inevitable demise at the hands of zombies. Which, had you survived, I'm sure you would be here complaining about instead. If you're going to play the game like a bloody idiot, please don't come knocking on rocket's door asking for help. Take the diaper off, grab your favorite soda, sit down, and try really hard to play DayZ again. Avoid players whose intentions you are unsure of. Make contact in ways other than physically exposing yourself to injury. Gather basic survival supplies, weapons and ammunition quietly in a group you can trust before trying to engage other players. Move quickly and quietly from cover point to cover point. Try to be aware of your surroundings at all times to call incoming player and zombie targets to your friends. Move to meet and then work in a group with at least one other person. If you do not know someone personally whom you can convince to play, try logging in to the teamspeak servers that many, many servers offer free of charge and finding someone there. No, you cannot be sure they will treat you fairly - but it's a much better bet than just randomly stumbling into people in the game. Learn the map and learn how to use the tools to find your way around the map so you can move quickly from one area to the next and effectively meet up with other players based on landmarks, direction, etc. A useful tip is that running 100m takes 20s and the smallest grid lines on the in-game map are 100m apart. So 2 blocks on the map = 40s, 3 is a minute, and so on. Use this to gauge where you are. Travel quietly. Scout ahead before you move. Listen carefully for gunfire. Be vigilant above all things. Do these things. Do these few simple things. Practice them and when you make mistakes learn from those mistakes and try again. When you've done all this and still find the game to be frustrating, THEN you may return and start demanding sweeping game design and balance changes. But as long as you're going to bound down the beach like a kid's birthday clown then please, for the sake of the forums and the future of this game, just shut up and click respawn.
  16. I hate to be melodramatic, but honestly this is rocket's biggest obstacle in the design of this game I believe. It's an incredible design conundrum because you don't want to impede a player's progress getting into the game as efficiently as possible, nor do you want to upset the integrity of their "most recent state," but at the same time the possibility that at any moment, anywhere, a player could just appear from the ether and start firing - all elements of tactics, planning and strategy suddenly come up against an inevitable statistical wall. Not every time, maybe not even often - but some percentage of your deaths will be directly attributed to someone logging in at the wrong time. No matter how careful you are, no matter how far you plan ahead, no matter how much you strategize, one person logging in with a frag grenade in their hand could take out you, your friends and a vehicle with the click of a mouse. But what can you do? Saying "Oh you can't login right now someone's near that spot" is prohibitive - who knows when they're going to move, and you could keep someone offline indefinitely if you knew where they logged out. You can't just randomly teleport people around the map. It's like an immovable object and an unstoppable force. I don't see a really clear way forward. In a game with permanent death and potentially hundreds of hours on the line, it's going to get very interesting when people start losing their livelihoods to the login rogue more and more often. I'm optimistic that rocket can find a solution, but he's got his work cut out for him that's for sure.

    Weapon Spawn Rate Reduced?

Some rates were reduced. Some by as much as half. You can google the loot cheat sheet and compare to previous versions.

Stop modeling DayZ after 28Days Later

Seriously I have trouble not just raging when people start spouting off about what the game is "supposed" to be. How about we let the fucking people making the fucking game decide what it's supposed to be and we stick to testing? If you have a minimum of 2 people with you at all times then you have nothing to complain about. Zombies are still stupid and slow indoors. Line them up and take turns shooting. Job's done. No YOU spend half your time doing that because you are terrible at avoiding zombies. Try going prone once in awhile it still works wonders even in 1.7.1.5.
