Just be careful, they can get out of hand easily and if you roll it at top speed you will die. I've lost two long term survivors to motorcycle accidents.

idea: players without gun cannot die by other players?
ZedsDeadBaby replied to anton364@hotmail.nl's topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
1anton12 is hands down my favorite poster on these forums. I have never failed to get a laugh out of clicking on one of his threads. Keep up the good work, man. -
You could have taken it somewhere besides the coast, you realize that right? Motorcycles are one of the most powerful items in the game. They carry two passengers, get incredible gas mileage and are very fast and maneuverable on a variety of terrain types. My crew maintains two motorcycles at all times, and any time one of us logs in separated from the group or dies and spawns on the coast, someone else can hop on a motorcycle and go pick them up. Cuts travel time down so much. Plus it's motherfucking fun. So, yes, to answer your question. People bother with motorcycles. You should have hidden it somewhere and kept it safe.

The Bandit Dilemma: An Inner Look at the Economics and Psychology of Banditry and the Inevitable Collapse of Day Z
ZedsDeadBaby replied to Chiefmon's topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
This is my favorite part. "The data and trend do not support my claim, but they will! You just wait and see! So lets ignore the data and instead I'll just throw out some random speculations and baseless predictions but since my post has some charts they will seem more valid." Why don't we just wait until the data exists and do an actual analysis? Since none of the data or trends seem to support any of the claims you're making, don't you think it's a bit premature to start drawing ridiculous conclusions about the "inevitable collapse of the game?" The recent influx of players isn't that massively imbalanced compared to where it was a month or two ago. The game went from 75k to 150k and 150k to 350k with just as much fervor and that was well long enough ago for these people to have fallen victim to your inevitable-banditry theory, yet banditry and murder rates continue to decline. Your chart is an interesting roadmap of your personal subjective experience with the game. None of it matches up with mine, nor I'm sure many people's. You took one path and made certain decisions and had a series of experiences but just because you put them on a pretty graph doesn't mean they're anything but your personal story of DayZ. And here again, your analysis of the "bandit's dilemma" is entirely subjective. Diplomacy isn't even an option for me, for example. I'm not interested in making new friends in the game or forming alliances and because I already have plenty of support diplomacy gains me nothing. It's not a strategy I will ever employ, nor one that's particularly interesting to me as a game mechanic period. I will not engage random strangers in negotiations because even if I can trust them not to shoot me, I can pretty much guarantee you I cannot trust them to play the game near me without endangering my life. I choose my friends carefully based on people I know and trust not to play like a lackwit and get everyone around me killed. Diplomacy doesn't exist in my game. My choices are evasion, elimination, observation, espionage or manipulation. You don't even mention observation & espionage - watching or stalking a player in an attempt to gain information about his companions or potential assets such as hidden vehicles or tents. This is a huge part of the end game for me and my crew. You overlook manipulation as well - attempting to distract or disorient a player using tactics such as driving vehicles nearby or firing weapons in the distance to attempt to draw a target out into the open or scare them off or otherwise change or manipulate their behavior. Sometimes it's literally just taunting - scare them a little bit and make them think twice about what they're doing for no other reason than to see what their reaction is. Still again you list gains from elimination when, for me, there are very, very few. The very rare chance that a player has NVGs, which is the only piece of loot I would bother taking off a body at this point, do not really enter into my decision making process. Elimination for me is essentially profitless. Evasion is always safer, and loot is not needed so the only benefit to elimination is the thrill of it. In essence your analysis is simplistic and assumes that we all have the same motivations and value equally the same types of gains and losses in the game which is exactly the opposite of what happens in reality in DayZ - which is that pretty much every player has their own reasons for doing what they do. There is no common goal or objective so gains/losses are entirely subjective. You know what I value most in the game right now? Crazy-ass interesting things happening. That's it. I don't care who lives or dies or comes or goes I just want "stuff to go down" so I try to put myself in situations where that's likely to happen. I gain memories, so no matter what happens I win. If I try to kill you it's because I think that might result in something interesting happening and if I don't it's only because I think that might be more fun. It's all one big gain to me. So your model breaks down almost immediately. I'm not weighing gains and losses anymore, I'm just trying to get myself into interesting scenarios and see how they play out. My values change on a whim. -
Thanks for your contributions to the Alpha test and best of luck in whatever you decide to try next. Cheers and farewell!

Hacked items and if I were to keep them

I love seeing people asking for bandit skins back who apparently didn't play when they were in the game. Banditry was more common when skins were in the game. Murder rates were higher and life expectancy was 25 minutes. Go post here. Visual identification system that doesn't rely on magical faeries that tell you who is naughty and who is nice. Your other suggestions are interesting. Go start threads in the suggestions forum instead of complaining about PvP in General Discussion. -
What kind of landscape would you like to see in a DayZ stand alone game?
ZedsDeadBaby replied to scouski's topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
rocket has actually already hinted that DayZ proper will probably have multiple maps that players can travel between. e.g., the main starting map would be approximately the size of Chernarus but once you are able to find, repair and fuel up a boat you can travel to an island map which is too distant to reach by swimming. So in essence veteran players "graduate" to new areas by acquiring the necessary means to travel there. -

Many different types, of course. -
If you make ammunition more rare, I'm going to kill more people in order to take their ammunition. Even if they have a different weapon than me, I will store their ammunition for my friends or later use. Making the game harder is not going to make me trust strangers any more than I do today. In fact, it will make me more insular, only willing to group and travel with people I absolutely trust 100% and have no doubts in their abilities to remain unseen, unheard and play tactically.

Morale is a decent idea. However, it will not accomplish what you say. I will still play with my trusted friends to gain morale, and shoot anyone else I don't know or trust because morale will not be more valuable than the uncertainty and lack of security that comes from welcoming a stranger into our group. There is simply too much at stake for me to be comfortable bringing any old random jackass I meet in the game along on my adventures. I drive around with 5 friends in a vehicle packed tight with gear and equipment. Why would I put all of that at risk just for a little morale boost? Not going to happen. This keeps coming up in different threads and I keep saying rocket cannot make game mechanics that will make people be friends. There's a reason I'm not friends with everyone I meet in real life and the same is true in games. I befriend certain people because I know and trust them to play the game in the way that I do and work together and not stab me in the back or act like a complete jackass and get me and my friends killed. If I meet someone in game who seems kind of cool, I might exchange contact details and try to make friends with them, but that's a long term thing that's not going to take place exclusively in the game. No amount of game mechanics are going to make me trust random strangers. That trust can only be built the traditional way - over time through proven behavior, human contact, communication and interaction. All things I can do right now without rocket's help. -

Reserved Player Places for Clan Servers?
ZedsDeadBaby replied to Domenico (DayZ)'s topic in DayZ Mod Suggestions
Rocket plans to add a few reserved slots in the future I believe, but sure as hell not 15 per server. You pay for a server to help test DayZ, not to have a free-for-all playground for you and your friends to get together without threats and farm loot all day long. If that's why you're paying for a server, I suggest you cancel your contract next month. -

All games are inherently unproductive. That's why they are called games. How is that relevant to whether or not you can be lazy or impatient while playing them? Chess is a game; and it's unproductive. Yet, in order to play you must exercise extreme amounts of focus, attention, patience and calm consideration. Some moves can take 30+ minutes of just sitting and calmly considering the possibilities. So if you showed up to a chess tournament and said "This is bullshit! Where's all the action? You guys are being so unproductive!" then I could rightly call you impatient or lazy. Poker functions similarly. If you want to be successful long-term in poker, you must be incredibly patient and wait for opportunities to take advantage of mistakes made by your opponents. I have played 15+ hour sessions in which I have folded almost every hand I received because I did not see an opportunity to capitalize on a situation. Was I bored? Yes, at times. Did I get impatient and go all-in and hope to get lucky and double-up? No, I waited - and even if the opportunity didn't come I went home and came back and tried again next time. Meanwhile I watch player after player show up drunk, slap down $200 and lose it within 10 minutes because they don't have the patience or fortitude to play the game with proper consideration. That's okay for them. They had fun. Just like the player who runs into Cherno shouting and firing rounds into the air is probably having fun. But just like the drunk poker player is going to go home empty-handed 10 minutes into his session, the crazy Cherno shooter is going to be back at the beach in no time at all... Nothing about a game says you cannot exhibit impatience or laziness while playing and, say what you will, but an unwillingness to devote 10-15 minutes to accomplishing what you clearly feel is a very important task in DayZ - getting together with your friends - shows an extreme amount of impatience and, yes, a fair amount of laziness too. "I want satisfaction now! Why should I have to work for it?" is the essence of your argument. I've said it before (of course nobody in your camp bothered to respond): friends are more important than any other item or piece of equipment in the game. So asking to be able to spawn next to your friends is no different than asking to spawn next to a pile of great loot, food or ammunition. If you want something important, work for it. If you aren't willing to work for what you want, don't expect it for free. It's really as simple as that. This thread can go for another 13 pages but it's not going to change the nature of DayZ. You are meant to start alone, unarmed, and unprepared. Everything after that you need to work for. Don't want to do that? Well I think you know what comes next. Creative and foolish. By the time you "run to the nearest town" 3-4 times over and wait for zombies to kill you, you will most likely have spent more time killing yourself than it would have taken you to run and meet your friends in the first place. -

ZedsDeadBaby replied to Gadget (DayZ)'s topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
Life expectancy was almost 20 minutes lower and banditry and murder rates were higher when the skin and humanity counter were in the game. So, sorry. Not quite that simple. So you just absolutely adore danger and difficulty just as long as there's not too much of it and you know it's coming and can avoid it easily and don't really have to worry about it... This argument is so stale. You have no idea what the intentions are of someone who shoots you. You can't tell the difference between mindful and mindless PvP in the game. You see a guy, you're dead. Maybe he had a good reason? Maybe not. How can you tell? And if you can't tell, how can that make one type exciting and the other type a "let down?" There's no way to tell the difference. -

I'm talking about the fact that "group mechanics" can't make someone a better player or a better listener or a better friend. If you're an idiot, you're an idiot; if you're unsafe and reckless, that's what you are, and no amount of mechanics are going to make me want to spend my leisure time watching you endanger my life and the lives my of companions. I'm all for more team play mechanics. I'm all for more group play. I support every feature and mechanic that requires cooperation and communication and planning and organization and trust and teamwork and friendship. I'm just going to do them with people I already know. People who have already proven themselves reliable, loyal and trustworthy. I'm not going to run out into the dark of the night and expect that some random jagoff I bump into is going to be fast-friends with me, able to communicate, cooperate and participate on the level that I expect (nay, demand). Do what you will. Say what you will. Implement whatever mechanics that you want. You cannot turn an "average" player into someone that I want to spend time with. I have standards and most people don't meet them and no mechanic is going to change that. I'm not saying I'm "better" than anyone or superior. Just that I have a style and I expect to play with other people who share that style, and adhere to it with the kind of dedication and focus that I do. Look, the bottom line is people already know how to talk to one another. They already know how to make friends and plan events and organize things. We've known how to do that since before the internet existed when we had to plan neighborhood baseball games. We don't need rocket to come along and teach us how to do that. We need rocket to give us mechanics that the groups we already have the power to form can use to accomplish more complex and complicated things in the game and have a more lasting and notable effect on the world around us. Make a name for ourselves. Make a story that other people want to read. He can't implement friendship and relationships. That's something we just have to do. He gives those things a place to thrive but it's not his job to create them. And, yes, if I run into people who don't fall into this category, I'm going to open a new cavity in their body with the hopes that one or two of the more important organs in their body will fall out rendering them harmless to me. Maybe I'm not necessarily interested in what their particular hopes and dreams were; maybe I just want to make sure they don't get in my way? And if they see me first? All the better. That crack and that moment of realization as the screen fades and the scoreboard appears. Your heart beating almost audibly in your chest thump, thump, thump and suddenly you're sweating and you don't know why and holy fuck a video game's not supposed to make you feel this way? That's okay. I'll pick up and start over. And maybe one day we will meet again. -

ZedsDeadBaby replied to RedDedZed's topic in DayZ Mod Suggestions
No they don't. Who told you this? What's your source? Are you a doctor? You have absolutely no basis for this claim. The only thing you know is that they exhibit uncontrolled violent behavior and appear disoriented. They may retain all their memories. They might feel pain. They might be in there right now thinking "What is happening to my body? Why do I feel this way? Why me? Where's my wife and son? Where are the doctors? Why isn't anyone helping me? Wait, what's that? Is that a guy over there? I wish I could call for help but all that comes out is a gutturral groan. Hey, wait, why does he have a gun? He's pointing it right at me. Oh, please no. Don't let it end like this. Not now. Please, no." Tell yourself they lack concsciousness if it makes you feel better about what you do every day, but you don't know that. You have no idea what the effects of the infection are beyond what you observe. Okay? There are different types of zombies. I'm not sure what you think you're proving by calling them zombies when they're infected human beings. You are the one copping out on the discussion. If PvP ruins a game for you, then don't play games with PvP? Nobody is forcing you to play DayZ. Many of us thrive on the presence of rampant, senseless PvP because it adds a constant element of uncertainty and fear. When I play DayZ, I'm always afraid of what might happen. And it's not the zombies. Left 4 Dead, Resident Evil, Dead Island, Plants vs. Zombies, Zombies Ate My Neighbors, etc. they all had zombies and none of them ever made me afraid like DayZ does. Because in DayZ I have to worry about humans too. Terrible humans (even the trolls) who want to do terrible things to me at any moment. Good stuff. I love it. If you don't okay. Go try Chernarus Zombie Apocalypse it's basically DayZ without the PvP. -

In what sense is it a waste? You have your buddy now, and a trusted companion is the single most important survival "item" in the game - more important than any piece of equipment, weapon or vehicle. So in essence asking to automatically spawn near your friends is the design equivalent of asking to spawn next to a pile weapons or medical supplies or food & water. If you want weapons and ammo, work for them. If you want food and water, work for it. And if you want a friend to watch your back, work for it. If you're not willing to spend 15 minutes doing that, then, and I hate to go there, but go play a different game. DayZ isn't about giving you things for free. You should have realized that the first time you appeared on the beach with nothing in your hand but an old flashlight and some ibuprofen. Being alone is more challenging and dangerous. So the "frustration" of finding your friends adds both danger and challenge to the game. Both good things. -

The simple fact of the matter is that we never will and never could. Asking rocket to implement some "tool" that makes it so I will suddenly want to spend my evening with any random 15-year-old, Mt. Dew swilling loud-mouth is like asking him to figure out this whole cold fusion thing while he's at it. Game mechanics cannot create social relationships. only we can do that. I don't group with random people in the game because random people are random, and on average do not play the game with the care and respect that I do. They run when they should walk, shoot when they should wait, stand when they should prone, get lost, turn circles, shoot friends, attract unnecessary attention and generally become a deadly liability as likely to get me killed as anything else. And when I try to give them advice, they ignore it or complain. Nothing rocket can possibly do will change this. People are who they are and no game mechanic is going to make them a different person. I play with people I know and trust. If I meet them randomly in game and they seem to be a reasonable person and we talk and I find out they are in the same time zone and have the same play habits as me, I might start considering sharing out-of-game contact info with them so they can join our circle of trusted friends.
