Player Identification and Classification System

That's a problem for another thread, I'm afraid. This is just laying the groundwork for future additions and mechanics that enhance and expand on player identification. To your point, though, I think you are right - in the current system of distributed private servers the usefulness of this mechanic would be undermined by the sheer vastness of the player base and their transient nature. But, I do not believe this server setup will be the final hosting solution for DayZ - especially when it goes stand-alone. I fully expect rocket to attempt to create a more persistent player community by devising a way to segregate the player base into smaller sub-sections to increase the odds that you interact with the same people more often. Something akin to WoW's "Battlegroups" where a subset of servers are combined - so a single instance of your player can travel between servers within the group freely, but not outside the group. This would vastly increase the usefulness of my system and others like it. Though, in fairness to the concept even today, if you find a server you like and play there consistently I think you would be surprised how often you run into the same players. On my home server we have a long-standing rivalry with another clan who plays on the same server at roughly the same time and this has been going on for well over a month among the same ~20-30 players or so. -

So not only have you demonstrated that you are not at all familiar with the contents of the proposal, but you didn't even finish reading the fucking article itself before posting that the Army was "sick" of the engine and looking for a "complete replacement." Both claims which are clearly your own invention. And you don't see how you're being sensational? Really? Sit down and re-read the article, then read the proposal - the one I asked you to read three separate times during our discussion. I'm sorry I didn't provide a link; I assumed you knew what I was talking about since you're the one who posted the goddamn thing in the first place. Particularly parts like this which clearly state they are not in any way unhappy with the current product and are looking to expand upon it, not replace it: The current GFT flagship product, VBS2, was procured in a competitive source selection in Dec 08. Over the last three years, the product has evolved to include capabilities such as terrain paging, improved graphic realism, IED training modules, insurgent methodology training scenarios, Special Operations Command(SOCOM) enhancements, an improved cultural and language training capability, and a terrain database plug-in that will facilitate incorporation of Synthetic Environment (SE) Core databases. The Government has also invested in several middleware capabilities that provide additional features such as enhanced indirect fire skills training and combat lifesaver and medic training. The required product will provide the User the ability to connect existing and future middleware via an Application Programming Interface (API) or plug-in. This will enable the addition of new training capabilities for seamless training using the Flagship game as the user interface. This will ensure the reuse of a multitude of Governmental and Commercial Off-the-Shelf (GOTS/COTS) products and features already developed. The only people who can possibly claim there are no incentives to cooperative play in DayZ are ones who haven't fucking bothered to try. I have survived 28 and 31 days respectively on my last 2 survivors and both would have died many times over were it not for the help and support of my allies in the game. Between bandaging me when I'm unconscious and bleeding out to sniping someone who was about to ambush me to giving me a blood transfusion after I got drunk and wrecked my motorcycle into boulder... I have literally lost count of the number of times my mates have pulled me back from the brink of death. Every fucking day I have to read a new jackass post that there's "no reason to team up" in the game. Honestly, have you even tried? Really. Be honest. Because my guess is you either have not, or the people you decided to team up with fucking sucked and accidentally shot you in the back of the head instead of protecting you. -

Dude, just read the synopsis of the proposal. It has nothing to do with anything being "broken" or needing to be "fixed" and everything to do with adding on to the existing capability of the system with new features and game modes and up to date equipment. It is a response to emerging needs, not shortcomings of the existing system. If you want to talk about the proposal lets talk about it. It's interesting in and of itself without the need for your sensationalist bullshit. -

I'll be honest, you're completely full of shit. The first post noting that the server was locked in this thread was posted at 12:21AM. I noticed it and made a post at 1:56AM. Checked again at 2:49AM and it was still locked with two players online. Checked finally before I went to bed near 4AM and it was still locked up tight. "About 30 minutes" my ass. You're a shameless, cheating git and precisely what's wrong with the current state of DayZ server administration. You shouldn't just lose your rights as an admin your server should lose access to the hive. I love how you try to take the high road about trying to "provide a better play experience" or whatever. Dupe a ridiculous amount of tents and gear and then when threatened, ban the player attacking you and immediately lock the server to empty your tents "just to get it out of the way" like what the fuck is that even supposed to mean? Just a total convenient coincidence that your clean-up efforts happened to precisely coincide with this thread being posted? Uh huh. Right. You're just looking out for us, right? Uhh, I really don't see anything in either the article or proposal to indicate that they are "sick" of the engine. They've simply issued an updated requirements spec, which I'm sure Bohemia is in a better position than anyone to fulfill on time and budget. But the Army can't just sign them up for the contract, they need to open bidding. In fact, this seems to indicate they're quite satisfied with VBS2 as they expect the new engine to provide the same functionality: The new FPS based game and tools should include, but is not limited, to the components and capabilities of the current FPS game, Virtual Battlespace 2 (VBS2), as described in the Program Description. So basically any competitor would have to build VBS2 from the ground-up before they're even ready to get started on the new engine... by that time Bohemia will have left them in the dust. If they have any interest in maintaining the relationship, I'm sure they will be the ones to take the reigns. Who else even stands a chance? -

No, it actually doesn't. Murdering someone for a gun is infinitely more dangerous than just picking one up off the ground. Murdering someone for a backpack is infinitely more dangerous than just finding one in a grocery store or tent and a larger backpack doesn't make survival that much easier. The 8 slots you start with is plenty to carry food, water and medical supplies necessary. Backpacks are convenient and nice to have, but they are not critical to survival. If you're killing for a backpack you're killing out of greed, not survival. Okay, exactly. So you agree killing has nothing to do with survival. Survival is easy and almost a guarantee. Any killing you do is basically for enjoyment. No matter what you tell yourself after the fact. Uhh. Exactly. Fun. So we agree then? I'm confused. You started out acting like you were disagreeing with me, and then end your post basically saying exactly the same thing I did - survival is easy and killing is what we do to make the game interesting. -

Please re-read the OP. Understand that this system does not permit "everyone" to identify a player after you have done so. This is a player specific, personal system of identification and classification. Only YOU have this information. You can certainly communicate it via voice comm to your fellow players like "Hey, that's the guy I saw murder someone in Cherno yesterday!" but the actual data will not be automatically or magically shared with others - unless of course they too are able to approach and identify the same player on their own. By the way, that quote in your signature is mine, you should give credit where credit is due. ;)
