If you want to call it a "survival" game, fine, but part of survival is surviving other people. So, it's also PvP. Unless you're the last person on Earth, which you're not.

rocket comments on the issue here: http://forums.dayzgame.com/index.php?/topic/155698-serious-database-issue-bug/ I really wish they would sticky this post because this question gets asked like every 10 minutes.

This is not the mod, great. But all the reasons we couldn't choose where to spawn in the mod also apply to the standalone game. I'm sorry if you find the truth rude and counterproductive, but you will never be able to choose where you spawn. It's just not going to happen. And it shouldn't.

This was beat to death in the mod. You will never be able to choose where you spawn.

I'm of the Opinion that KoS will be shorted sight and wasteful....

What the fuck are you talking about? -
Attn: Dev's, Give us a break to help u test the game
ZedsDeadBaby replied to Morbius221's topic in General Discussion
How would it help test the game to set up a scenario that won't actually exist in the game? Part of the alpha is the team collecting metrics on how successful people are at surviving. In order for that data to be useful, they need to place is in the "real" survival situation and let us fend for ourselves, then slowly make changes, balances and adjustments based on the results of their inquiries. Giving us an "easy" start is just going to muck up their data and make the testing less effective. So, no. -
Why are people complaining about KOS like it's a feature issue?
ZedsDeadBaby replied to kragz's topic in General Discussion
Okay. When we're in the actual situation, I'll let you know and you and I can band together and till the fields for planting seeds and build pens for breeding livestock, because that's what I would be doing in the "actual situation." I sure as dogshit wouldn't be wandering around ruined cities and blundering through wilderness in search of old beans and rotten fruit. Until the actual apocalypse rolls around, though, I'm going to spend my evenings locking, loading and blasting the stupid, ugly faces off every random survivor I come across because that's about the most fun money can buy. Deal? Deal. -
There will never, ever be PvE servers. Ever. Those are my thoughts.

Why are people complaining about KOS like it's a feature issue?
ZedsDeadBaby replied to kragz's topic in General Discussion
How can you type this and not immediately say to yourself "Wait, I'm contradicting myself completely." The theory behind the game is to put people in a survival situation and see what they do. It turns out, for many of them, what they do is shoot other people a lot. But, for some reason that goes against the theory of the game? How? You literally just got done saying that it was designed to see what players do. It's loads of fun and I play games to have fun. Therefore I have a "game-based reason" to shoot you. It's really not complicated. -

Then don't play DayZ like that? You don't have to. I don't understand. If you don't want to shoot everyone, don't. There's plenty of clans and squads who have this policy. Join one and have fun. I survived for 45 consecutive days during the mod with over 1600 zombie kills and collected over a dozen different vehicles, all while killing a total of like 3 players. If you don't want to engage players in combat, don't do it. But don't expect to be able to wander up to strangers like a lost puppy and ask them for directions to the nearest smoke shop without getting your head blown off. If you want to avoid combat and combat comes from encounter strangers then here's a shocking tip: avoid strangers. "But I want to make friends!" Tough titties. This isn't The Sims. If you want to play kissy-huggy with everyone you meet, then you've come to the wrong zombie-infested Russian wilderness. No, but some people are trying to force me to play it in a certain way that conforms to their pre-conceived standards. Let me get this straight: I don't give a flying fuck what you do and don't find dull or interesting. You're not me. I'm me. I find the constant threat of player attacks to be the sole source of intensity, drama and fear in DayZ. It's the reason the game is exciting. If people only shot me when they had a "really, really good reason" (presumably one they have run by you ahead of time since you're the final arbiter on when it's appropriate to shoot other players) then the game would be dull and uninteresting for me. You see, there are plenty of other very good games out there that allow you to roam around shooting zombies and collecting loot without PvP combat. Nobody is forcing you to play DayZ either. So if all you want to do is shoot zombies and eat fruit, then you're just as capable of finding another game to play as I am. -
No, you are not used to "near perfect" movement. What you're used to is completely unrealistic, fantasy-based movement as if your body is weightless and friction-less and your avatar is some kind of super-human killing machine capable of leaping in the air, spinning a 180 and accurately firing an assault rifle before hitting the ground. Counterstrike, while a neat game, is not a combat simulator. It's player movement mechanics don't belong anywhere near DayZ.

What is the "In-depth story-line" to SA ?
ZedsDeadBaby replied to toddmh's topic in General Discussion
Yes, that's rather misleading. I've never seen rocket suggest any kind of artificial "story line" or mission system. He's often mentioned expanding on the background story of the game, and doing so in interesting ways like leaving clues around the map for players to find like news clippings or images, but I've never seen him suggest a "mission" system or any kind of story-based quest system. That would really go against the spirit of the game which is that the players make their own stories based on how they want to play. -

I love trading. I'll trade you one bullet to the head for literally everything you have. Fair deal? No? That's okay, it wasn't actually a question because you're dead already and lying face down in your underpants. -
Why are people complaining about KOS like it's a feature issue?
ZedsDeadBaby replied to kragz's topic in General Discussion
That's fine, but who cares? Why is it so important to you to establish the difference? Players are free to do both, as they should be. What a crock. You might not like the challenge, but that doesn't mean there isn't one. Unless you're telling me you win every fight you've ever been involved in in DayZ, a claim upon which I would levy a heavy dose of bullshit-calling. -
Here's a full list Guns, Vehicles, Items etc. currently in SA. Most are disabled and yet to be enabled in the current build. {Spoiler}
ZedsDeadBaby replied to JDM (DayZ)'s topic in General Discussion
Because those were trademarks, not copyright, and images from brands that rely heavily on their logos to market their brands. There's a big difference between a trademarked Coke logo and a text-only copy of a science fiction book written 109 years ago. If any of the copyright holders do happen to take issue (unlikely), the most they would do is politely ask it to be removed from the game, which would take a few keystrokes. It's really not a big deal. -

ZedsDeadBaby replied to JDM (DayZ)'s topic in General Discussion
Eh, not really. Most of those books are older, and considering the medium I doubt they would have to pay full licensing fees (it's not like they're marketing the books with the game). I wouldn't be surprised if they aren't even licensed. This isn't the sort of usage that's likely to attract the attention of copyright lawyers. -
If you're finding pieces, I imagine the plan would be to eventually allow you to combine them into a single full map, but that's just a guess.

Right, which is what I imagine rocket is referring to with his "balance adjustments" and "proper loot" mechanics. Yes, I think we will move away from the mod strategy of looting a building, running away, and returning immediately for more loot. That said, I also recognize that no loot respawn at all is impossibly restrictive, and timing it with server restarts gives people too much information (i.e., knowing when a server restart occurs gives you knowledge about loot that you shouldn't have). An ideal system will balance the frequency of loot spawning with the number of active players, and include some element of randomness so that nobody will truly know when loot returns. Higher value loot targets like military barracks should also have longer respawn cycles and less predictability to ensure that these items are rare and difficult to obtain.
-
Because two designs for one system means twice the testing, twice the bugs, and twice the maintenance cost when it comes time to make changes. rocket has already declared the text system to be "shit" so I think he's going to replace it with something more to his liking.

Has Rocket/any Dev addressed on chars. wiping and spawning on the coast?
ZedsDeadBaby replied to icefluid's topic in General Discussion
Yes. But there is another problem which is resetting characters outside of the "normal" resets. If you play on a server before it gets white listed or when it loses a DB connection, you will lose your progress: http://forums.dayzgame.com/index.php?/topic/155698-serious-database-issue-bug/ -

It's not the character wipe. I've lost like a dozen characters this way. -

Yes. He posts in this thread: http://forums.dayzgame.com/index.php?/topic/155698-serious-database-issue-bug/ -
It's not a "bug" but it's also not intended functionality. It's placeholder. rocket said this is not how loot respawning is going to work:
-
What's bad about that? That's a perfect first impression of the game. "See somewhere interesting? You're probably going to die there" seems like an awesome lesson to teach people on their first day in the game.

how long do i stay in game after i log out ?
ZedsDeadBaby replied to Dougel's topic in General Discussion
You were probably playing on a server that was not white-listed or which lost its connection to the DB. See this thread for rocket's explanation of character loss.
