It's not random. You're playing on servers that don't yet have access to the hive. rocket comments in this thread, which I sincerely wish the mods would pin.

Rocket, Consider Dogs as a "Humanity System"

Only if my bandit dog helps me sniff out "good guys." Deal? -
Why do we already have so many 24/7 daylight servers?
ZedsDeadBaby replied to Gingerizhere's topic in General Discussion
That's an awfully slippery slope argument when it comes to DayZ I'm afraid. It's a game whose primary goal is to put players in somewhat realistically uncomfortable situations. Lighting up the night like a Spanish carnival (as in that screenshot that is making the rounds like an 18-year-old call girl) is not in the spirit of the title. -
According to, like, reality? This is not unique to DayZ. No game "solves" hacking. You simply do your best to keep it to a minimum. I don't even know what that's supposed to mean. What is a "million dollar payroll?" Do you understand how companies function?

I just run in a straight line. They stop chasing you after awhile. Sooner if you're obstructed (i.e., don't run down the middle of the road in daylight).

Well, obviously a 1-handed melee strike would do less damage, but if you really want to argue about the effectiveness of a one-handed baseball bat strike then I humbly offer to conduct a series of independent trials on your face to see how it holds up. What do you say? :) -

Human eyes do not perceive color like that in low light situations. It looks realistic to you because when you're outside in the middle of night you're probably often around artificial lights which make it possible to see color again. If you go stand in the middle of a field on a dark night, you will not see color like this. You will see in black and white. That's how human eyes work. -

I really wish people would stop spreading that screenshot like an STD. That's not what night looks like to humans. -

The main problem right now as I see it is that the lighting options in the game are anemic and ridiculous. Flashlights are awful. It's like looking through a gun scope. There's no ambient reflection whatsoever which makes hunting around in close quarters with a flashlight incredibly unrealistic, annoying and downright stupid. Not to mention the fact that right now flashlights penetrate solid walls and bleed out into the surroundings announcing your presence to everyone within a 5km radius when you turn one on. Further, I should be able to hold a flashlight in one hand and a baseball bat or similar implement in the other so I'm not completely defenseless while exploring at night. Make flashlights work like real flashlights and add two hands to the game and I think a lot more people would tolerate the darkness. As it stands, it's no wonder people are making daylight servers. Why? Because it makes the game playable and fun, and that's what people want, Alpha or not. -
I just wanted to say good work, and thanks

Why does it have to be one extreme or the other? Yes, it's annoying that people are rudely complaining about what are obviously unfinished game features, but "higher than the mod in every respect?" Come on. That's just silly fantasy. It's obviously a step behind the mod in several areas. -
I would politely like to suggest we change the title of this thread to "Character Wipe on Server Change" or something similarly descriptive and pin it for now. We are getting like two dozen threads a day from people who are suffering from this problem, and so far this is the only thread where rocket explains that it's a known issue and how to avoid it.
-
I wasn't responding to you, mate.
-
Yes, there is absolutely a point in reporting known bugs. More reports provides more information for the developers in determining how widespread an issue is, in what situations it arises, and what different steps can be taken to reproduce the issue.
-
You also seem a little bit confused as to the point of a full, open Alpha release. We are not QA testers. We are players. Yes, the goal of an Alpha release is to identify issues and provide feedback for development, but if people aren't having fun while doing so then the entire system will fail. It is a give-and-take. Players play the Alpha in order to help identify issues in exchange for entertainment. If I wanted to simply test software, I would go get a job doing it and get paid for it. I sure as hell wouldn't pay someone $30 and then work for free. Seriously? Calling people out on their forum avatar? Your attitude is pretty much shit, dude. You're not doing the community any favors by presuming that you speak for us, so please stop acting like you're the official spokesperson for DayZ Alpha, okay? I for one welcome all sorts of players and play styles to DayZ, because I understand that a variety of play styles and opinions is exactly what makes a sandbox, open-world game interesting. If you want to play a game where everyone has exactly the same opinion as you and plays the game in exactly the same way, then maybe you're the one who should be looking for another game to play, eh? If you want to talk about things that are "highly unwanted" I highly unwant blow-hards like you acting like you're way of playing is The One True Way and demeaning new players with your asinine attitude.
-
It is an issue with servers that are new and haven't been "whitelisted" yet. rocket comments on it here. Your best bet is to Favorite servers that you trust and which have been around for a few days, so you can be reasonably assured they're on the whitelist and will save your progress to the hive. Server hop at your own risk.

I really hate that I'm going to say this, because it makes me uncomfortable and I think it's over-used and often inappropriate, but in this case I really do think it applies and say it in a genuine way with little ire or sarcasm: just go back to WoW. You really seem to want a relatively cookie-cutter MMO design model to be applied to DayZ and it's really just not going to happen. You're not going to get what you want from the game, and in the process of asking for it you're going to have a lot of very uncomfortable discussions on these forums. This part I do say with a fair amount of sarcasm: thanks for letting the developers know they couldn't just cut-and-paste your brilliant code directly into the game and have it compile and work. I'm sure they would have tried that and been very confused at the errors it produced. You probably saved them hours of troubleshooting.

That's pretty much the main complaint. People who can't acquire the weapons and those who can but have no idea how to use them properly decide they "don't belong" and come up with a laundry list of asinine reasons why. M4A1 with specialized ammo totally makes sense, but a .50 caliber sniper rifle, for some reason, is completely beyond the realm of imagining. It "breaks immersion" and stuff, eh? Asinine. Basically people just hate getting killed by someone they can't see. It's been the same argument since the first .50 cal kill in the mod and it never made any more sense than "Wahh, wahh, I don't want to die."
-
No, yeah. He definitely did compare it to fantasy MMOs. By suggesting that a game can't succeed without factions, for example. Choosing a faction that you have to stick to for some arbitrary reason forever is pretty much the exclusive domain of fantasy MMOs.
-
Bandits who have killed other military personnel and commandeered weapons, armor, vehicles and supplies. Obviously. Like I already said.
-
Why is that only a choice when it comes to the AS50? There's obviously not a weight limit when it comes to anything else. I can carry 70 pounds of rice around while toting an M4 and 5 mags like it ain't no thang, eh? But once it's a powerful weapon suddenly weight matters. Just say "I don't like sniper rifles" if that's how you feel. You really can't justify it any other way.
-
Right. They have time to ship in HMMVs and an infinite supply of assault rifles, but for some odd reason definitely didn't have time to bring in any powerful weapons. Makes almost perfect sense except the opposite of that.
-
15kg includes the weight of the magazine.
-
It's the end of the fucking world, mate. In the early days maybe they were trying to follow international law but it's pretty clear shit hit the fan at some point. Riding around in HMMVs gunning down sick civilians with assault rifles is probably against geneva conventions to, as well as piling up their dead bodies in giant piles with no attempt to identify them or give them proper burials, right?
-
Conventions ban the use of .50 caliber rifles against human targets. Is it so hard to believe early bandits were using vehicles that required more powerful weaponry? Any distinction you make in the interest of fiction is arbitrary and goofy. They needed heavy assault rifles and infinite rounds of .762 ammo, but sniper rifles were totally uncalled for? Come on. It's senseless.
-
The same kind that uses HMMVs and assault rifles? Also, they weren't just fighting zombies. They were combating early bandits who had much more dangerous weapons. You're just not going to win an appeal to realism. If high-powered assault rifles "make sense" then so do sniper rifles.
