I bet that KoSer was pissed off!

No, that's not exactly what I'm doing right now. I didn't insult anyone. But, sick burn? I guess.

You obviously had fun and came away with a good story and a proud victory. Yet, still for some reason definitely needed to call your opponent a "piece of shit" and bring up Call of Duty for no fucking reason. If only you had a chance to talk to him. Your encounter probably would have been like three times as boring and half as memorable. But, hey, then you wouldn't have had a reason to insult a stranger you know nothing about so that would be no fun for you, I guess?

    Constantly losing character progress

Thanks; glad to see some others picking up this copy pasta.
  4. In other words, you want to break the game for 3rd person servers so they have to play 1st person? You probably already realize there are features that rely on 1st person; why even suggest this? Anyway, can we please just let this thread die? They've already said 3rd person is not going to be removed. This dead horse was beaten to a pulp in the mod. If Dean had any intention of taking 3rd person out entirely, he could have done it a year and a half ago. Arguing about it now is just pissing into the wind.

I love this game, the heart pumping, adrenaline rushing

These are my favorite sorts of threads, because everyone will shower you with beans and tell you congratulations and how awesome your story was, and then go off and complain how "KoS is ruining DayZ" ignoring that that's basically all that happened here. Two dudes tried to KoS you and it basically made your night.

    Lost it all!

It's a common issue apparently to do with a server's ability to remain connected to the hive. Also, some servers have not yet been "white-listed" and so they will not have permission to access the hive yet and will not store your progress (or be able to retrieve your data from the hive, so logging in to these servers will effectively "wipe" your character). rocket discusses the issue here: http://forums.dayzgame.com/index.php?/topic/155698-serious-database-issue-bug/ Here's the tracker issue: http://feedback.dayzgame.com/view.php?id=78 You should go there, vote it up and add comments about your own experiences to increase visibility on this relatively critical issue. In the meantime, I suggest you use the "Favorites" function to flag servers which reliably store your progress, then only play there.
  7. Because that's a long term solution to a short term problem. You fix bugs by fixing the code, not by fundamentally changing the server hosting rules.

Tents, are they coming? any ETA?

I'm not sure tents specifically have been discussed, but "player constructed storage" is absolutely on the roadmap. It's one of the first things Dean talked about when discussing his hopes for standalone features. Here's hoping the duplication bug is a thing of the past. :D

which type of instances would you prefer?

I tended to think of it like this: choppers were delivering supplies either into or out of Chernarus, and one of the people on board was infected. Mid-flight the pilot was attacked and crashed, leaving some infected survivors to roam the area. It's a bit of a stretch, but it worked for me at the time.
  11. I really ought to make an album of all the senseless, baseless and malicious insults that have been slung in my direction in this thread so I can refer back to it when people claim that those who value PvP are "CoD kiddies" or whatever the trend will be then. It's amazing. Why don't you go tell Dean you think he's a sex-starved, angry little man because he's the one who made DayZ the way it is and insists that PvP be enabled and unrestricted at all times? Would you do that? Give it a shot and see if he doesn't knock a couple of your teeth out. Not that it's any of your business, but I have two wonderful children and a very satisfied wife and they would all attest to the fact that I'm not at all an angry person. I'm not a troll and I'm not doing what I do to ruin anyone's fun. If you read what I've posted in this thread, I think I've made it pretty clear why I do this and why I encourage others to. DayZ is made whole by murderous, sadistic behavior. It doesn't make sense, it's not "realistic" and it is sometimes frustrating and stressful. That's the point. You're not supposed to feel safe and comfortable in Chernarus. You're supposed to stare at the screen occasionally and ask "Why?" in an exapserated voice. Then you put your head in your hands, shake your head a bit, and then you suck it up and Respawn and get back to work. Everyone loves to talk about how DayZ without PVE is "just Battlefield" but turns around and ignores the other side of the same coin - that DayZ without PvP is "just Left 4 Dead" or whatever. To get DayZ you need both together at the same time. And no, it's not enough to include only the PvP you're comfortable with ("Banditry is okay I just hate KoS!" well, tough). People only love day because night is so scary. It's only cool to be a hero because there are so many villians. Yin gets awfully lonely without Yang. Fish need chips. And so on, and so forth.

which type of instances would you prefer?

Just combine the two. A hospital truck crash site where there's a horde of zombies (the patients that were in the truck) guarding nice loot (guns from the truck drivers and medical supplies from the truck). Crash sites were like this in the mod, but it didn't make a ton of sense. 20+ zombies around a helicopter that could only hold 6-8 people.

    Geared players on the coast

You literally just got done describing what was I'm sure a pretty exciting encounter for that person. Why wouldn't they come back to the coast? At some point, listening to the wind in the trees gets a little boring.
  15. If I'm speaking as the "real me" and not a hypothetical sadistic murderous bandit who kills anyone and anything all the time, then yes, we absolutely agree. Where survival is concerned, remaining undetected is obviously the most reliable method to live to see another day. But the person I was responding to was arguing that PvP is interesting while KoS is not, which implies that there is some kind of interaction which KoS eliminates, so I was speaking to that logic. Surely if the alternative is never seeing me at all or even knowing I'm there, then me attempting to hunt you down and kill you is MORE interactive and MORE exciting than me just crouching in the bushes and watching you silently pass like I'm some kind of post-apocalyptic groundhog. I assume this person would consider it "KoS" if, for example, he were to enter the same room as me in a house and instead of waving and saying "g'day mate!" I shoot him in the stomach instead. You're arguing for what some people call "Kill on Detection" or so, which I honestly think is the ideal if your plan is to live as long as possible. But, still, I'll argue until the end of Chernarus that the game would be far less interesting if there weren't at least a few people playing with what people like to call a "CoD mentality." Just like the zombies, these "all murder all the time" players make the game more interesting, not less.

PvE Server - Killed by a Human

    Stream Sniping A Huge Problem

You're playing a survival horror game with completely unrestricted PvP. If you stand up and announce your presence to the world, expect to get the top of your brain pan shot off. It's not complicated. If you were a bank robber and streaming your latest crime, are you going to complain when the cops show up to bust you?
  18. This argument is so prevalent, it's stunning. I don't understand it for a minute. If my plan is to eliminate you, then doing it when I see you and before you see me (on sight) is tactically ideal. If this is a "SURVIVAL" game as so many claim, then acting while I am still concealed is the absolute best thing I can do. It maximizes my chances of surviving the encounter. You expect me to step into the open, announce my presence, greet you, and, then what? We engage in some kind of verbal exchange whereby I attempt to justify why I'm about to murder you? In what way is that superior to me simply killing you when I see you and getting it over with? There's only one possible outcome. If my decision is to eliminate you, then that's not going to change after we sit down and have a little chit-chat over a can of beans, so why bother? All it does is vastly increase my odds of being killed and waste both of our time. Conversation is not the path to avoiding KoS. It's remaining unseen. You can't be killed on sight unless you're sighted, and it's not that hard to stay out of sight. Don't run on roads, don't stand in the middle of fields, and don't perch yourself on top of high buildings like a bleeding weather vane. Move quickly, move quietly, and keep moving. Stay in cover when possible and don't stay in one place too long. In short, learn how to survive. You want to play a survival game so badly, but asking you to learn how to survive the presence of people who want to kill you (yes, on sight) is somehow too much? Come on. That's the entire challenge of the game. Suck it up and figure it out.

PvE Server - Killed by a Human

    *rubs hands together* *grins maniacally*
  20. That is absolutely not it at all. That's completely false. I absolutely support people who do not want to KoS in the game, and think they should play the game the way they want to. I think that people who refuse to KoS are just as important and vital to the DayZ experience as the sadistic killers who shoot people for no reason. Both are necessary components of the "true DayZ." If you're going to accuse me of being "excatly the same" as the people making these servers, you're going to have to wait for me to rent a server and call it "KoS only," or something. Which isn't going to happen - because I understand that DayZ is about both sides of this coin existing in the same world at the same time. A Chernarus with KoS only is just as big a violation as one with no KoS at all. Neither alone make DayZ. They have to exist together and interact for the game to be truly complete. Point of fact, when I play on regular servers, I don't actually KoS. It's just not something I like to spend my time doing. I will kill people who threaten me or my squad, or who I perceive as a potential future threat, but I don't hunt down and kill players for sport. I survived for 45+ days in the mod with over 1700 zombie kills and had only 3 player kills, each of which were in self defense. Show me a "No KoS" server, though, and you're going to see my sadistic side. I will bring the ying where they want only yang. They're the ones attempting to imbalance the universe by taking out the dark half, so I'm putting it back in for them. I don't buy the "bug testing" argument for a second. Even at 40/40, Chernarus is a 140km2 playground. There's plenty of room to go and test things if that's what you want to do. Get off the coast, grab some items, and go test to your heart's content. You don't need a PvE server to find bugs, and game-play related feedback coming out of a "PvE server" is worse than useless for the developers. It's actually corrupting. I also don't buy that I'm "ruining" anyone's experience by shooting them. Zombies do nothing but KoS, and nobody accuses them of ruining the game. Why not? Somehow it's okay that their only conceivable reaction to a player is to immediately attempt to kill them. They make the game better and everyone loves zombies. "More zombies!" goes the hue and cry. "We need more brainless entities attempting to kill us!" they say. This game would be better if it had two, five, or ten times as many braindead, shambling hordes attempting to kill us at any moment. Unless, for some reason, they have a human brain. Then all of a sudden my game is ruined and I'm not having fun. Why? Is it because zombies are easier to kill than a player? Is it because you find it disconcerting to imagine that a human can be a more troubling and deadly presence than an undead terror? It's ridiculous. If you love zombies, you should love sadistic killers even more. One sadistic bandit is worth 1,000 zombies. I find it telling, by the way, that I'm supposedly the immature, childish, bad guy, asshole, douchebag, twatface here, yet all I've done is suggest people play the game by the rules that Dean has set up for us and for it have received no end of verbal abuse, name-calling and vitriol from those supposedly more sophisticated, mature and socially well-adjusted than myself. It's good I have a thick skin or I might come away from this thread with a thoroughly bruised ego. I'll continue with my plan. I think I'm doing Dean's work. I think he understands that DayZ shines most brightly because it puts these two sorts of people in the same world together and asks them to somehow figure out how to play the game at the same time. That's the heart and soul of the game. The entire point of its existence is to pit these two forces against each other and observe the outcome. Trying to pull out one of these forces altogether and still play the game is like taking the tires off your car before taking it for a test drive. I'll conclude with a quote directly from Dean himself which I think is pretty relevant:
  21. Yeah. I bet that's what they're doing. "Testing things." That's the ticket.
  22. Private hives are already disallowed; so it's assumed that people running private hives don't really care about the official rules.
  23. I just firmly believe you shouldn't feel safe when you play DayZ. That takes the soul of the game and pisses all over it. Dean's prime goal for the game is to put people in uncomfortable, dangerous and unpredictable situations. I genuinely think these servers undermine the spirit of the game, and I will do what I can to reinsert that spirit where I see it is missing. Yes, you can be friendly. You can not KoS. You can group up, work together, feed the hungry and clothe the poor. You can be a Wasteland Doctor or a traveling bard singing songs to the lonely survivors you meet. What you can't do is do these things in a safe little bubble away from the threat of other humans. If that's really what you're after, then you're not after DayZ. If Dean had wanted PvE to be an option, he would have included it long ago. It wouldn't be hard. There's a reason he didn't do it, and I think we should trust that it's a good reason and not try to change the rules for him. So, I'll continue to deliver uncertainty and death to these servers. Call me "childish" or whatever if that's really how you feel. I don't see it that way. I'm not punishing people for wanting to play in a certain way, I'm just making sure that when they're playing, they're playing DayZ.
  24. Yes I am. I'm not telling them how to play. They can play however they want. They can be friendly and not KoS and role play and do whatever else they want. I'm not telling them what to do at all. I'm just shooting them sometimes.
  25. No, actually they can't. They agree not to kick anyone when they sign up to host a server. If they do so, they're violating the rules and their server should/will be blacklisted form the hive. The only person I'm controlling is myself. They can play any way they want. There's nothing stopping them from "role playing" under normal server rules.
