Is the server in the same gmt area ? You say low ping, but if the distances is great no matter the connection the ping will still be pretty high.

The unofficial servers save data exactly like the normal ones but you can't transfer your char (because people would most likely create private servers give themselves all the gear and transfer to the official ones)
