So basically, a game mechanics enforced bandit skin? -
Traps to be added in a later patch - thoughts?
flyingmonkey (DayZ) replied to S1ippery Jim's topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
Are they going to despawn if a play isn't near them (keeping an eye on their trap) so that We don't randomly run into hundreds of placed traps later on when everyone is using them? I'd love to be able to fill a town with traps and just sit there watching from in the bushes. But if I were to place all those traps, then piss off to the other end of the map, some hapless group shouldn't all be insta-crawl 2 hours later because of what I did. Though, that would be funny for the people who were watching said group. You'll just end up seeing places like NWAF covered in these with nobody caring to stick around to watch. -
Why is an old wives' tale being used as a game mechanic?

Here's a real world situation for you right now: I don't get sick, like ever, it's just gone winter here and overnight the temperature plummets. I wake up and the only warm spot in my bed is where I already am, the rest of the bed is so cold that rolling over on it feels wet. Suddenly, sore throat and coughing up a lung. I haven't been doing anything differently lately, no contact with any other sick individuals. Just my bad luck and the cold dry air. IMHO though, Rocket needs to fix the temperature numbers to be decimals rather than whole numbers, with it starting at 37 and have it heading 1.5 change each way. Although, other than requiring you to dink more while running, I don't really see a point to having higher temperatures. -

Crawling Zeds are just infected paraplegics. At least that's what I tell myself. -
Humanity System - Rocket, have a minute?
flyingmonkey (DayZ) replied to Miyo's topic in DayZ Mod Suggestions
Dislike sight cues as obvious as armbands would be, and anything like scars or slightly paler skin wouldn't really be noticeable before you are already hitting the pavement. I think Rocket has a good thing going with utilizing sound cues, they aren't overly obvious, and will require you to be very vigilant of the surrounding noises to pick them up. IMHO, much more immersive. -
20 words or less: Super-Low Humanity Detection
flyingmonkey (DayZ) replied to rocket's topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
Yes About the only way to bring that instinct to a game setting without making it overly obvious as sight cues. -
20 words or less: Very Low Humanity = Flies/Crows
flyingmonkey (DayZ) replied to rocket's topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
No I'm not a bandit, but even I think this seems like a silly fix. Keep thinking. -

What is your Personal Best for Longest Days Survived?
flyingmonkey (DayZ) replied to S1ippery Jim's topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
10 days, was searching Stary Sobor for a coyote Backpack. Repost from another topic: I was sitting in the trees scoping out the military camp, when I saw someone come in via the grass, I watched him enter a tent and I diligently threw a smoke grenade towards it - to my surprise none of the zombies went for it, I was kinda pissed. I decided to watch him some more as he moved off to raid the other tents in hiding. Curiosity got the better of me and I moved from my hiding spot to the grass beside the tents, slowly crawling and looking inside each one trying to find my target. All of a sudden shots hit the dirt beside me; I roll towards the fence but I have already been hit, fearing my prey would come out and also start shooting me, I decide to run straight to the shooter. He was hiding up amongst the trees I had just came from. Shots ring out around me as a few zeds conga line behind me, I run past my shooter and the zeds give chase to their new target, he had some pretty bad shots and had only hit me the one time. With the zeds gone I duck behind a tree and start to bandage the wound, knowing I have enough meat to recover from my nearing death, as the animation begins to finish, a lone crawling zombie eats my foot and I die. Although I lost some good loot, I'm glad I died. I was beyond paranoid at everything, had some fun on the coast after that, died a few times. Fourth life back on the coast and guess what I find, a coyote backpack - suffice to say, time to become lonely and paranoid again. -

I dream about dying in DayZ
flyingmonkey (DayZ) replied to hurka's topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
Dayz is the first game I've have had a dream about. Dream went something like this: I had logged out with no water in my inventory, on my 10day old character, and when I logged in again it was flashing. Running around the town trying to find anything to drink but only finding empty cans and no water sources. Slowly just died of thirst, a very sad way to lose a relatively good character. When really, I had logged out with 2 water bottles in my backpack xD -
This is the MOST antisocial game ever
flyingmonkey (DayZ) replied to jani.ehro@gmail.com's topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
People forget that bandits don't exist anymore, we're all just survivors doing what we can. Some are murderers, some aren't. There are no teams, so why make them. -
Just shoot them in the legs.

If you make a kill with a sniper, you shouldn't be sitting in the same place for long.

I feel for you, but I'm the guy who congratulated the person that killed my 10day old character. Although I lost some good loot, I'm glad I died. Even though my character was only 10days old, I was beyond paranoid at everything, at least now I have a chance at having some mindless fun on the coast again, getting back-stabbed and the like. It's a release.

Then why even bother with a reply. The OP has some good points in it, if you are too lazy to take a break and have a read, then don't bother posting in the thread. You aren't contributing in the slightest, only telling others how lazy you are. Ontopic: Increasing the zombie count was okay, it did stress the servers a bit, but the players hated how often they respawned. Balance out respawn time and a larger amount of zombies, and you'll make firefights have their own penalties just from starting one up within earshot of a town. -
The Psychology behind taking a life (long read)
flyingmonkey (DayZ) replied to Theonerayman's topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
Humans are social creatures, there is a reason solitary confinement in prisons works. If you were to run around killing everyone you came across, as people do in this game, you wouldn't only have the guilt of killing people - but the extreme loneliness of the entire situation would make the effect worse. That guy you just took out without him even knowing? Could have kept you company for a little while - sharing stories, helping you raid, watching your back. Eventually, living weeks alone will drive you just as insane as PTSD would, and that's even without the need to kill someone. People claim that they feel raw emotion when deciding when they are going to kill another player, the only reason those people pull the trigger is because they know the guy they're about to take out will be all set on the beach in 10 seconds ready to start over. This game doesn't even come close to affecting your emotions as real life. Sure, you get attached to your pixels and would do anything to keep them safe, but taking out another guy is just not comparable to real life. You cannot do it in a game. In the end, I believe it boils down to this: The game is too easy to survive alone. There needs to be a lot more zombies, make teaming up a practical requirement. A guy with a CZ who sits and takes out a survivor from afar does take some risks, but when you looks at the populations of the servers and the size of the map, it's only blind luck that someone is going to get the jump on him doing his thing. Make dead players attract zombies - While they shouldn't go Usain Bolt towards the corpse, they should at least make their merely way toward it, making it that much riskier to loot the corpse. For a short while after killing a player, reduce his aiming accuracy - Don't make it gamebreaking though. This is about as "forced" as I feel comfortable with, simulating the thoughts going through the players head into his character. We all know that no matter what you are thinking as a player, you are fine at aiming a reticule at whatever is on your screen. This would reflect those thoughts running through your own head, even just slightly. Just a few ideas that came to my head while reading the thread, I agree with the OP, but not the ways that people have suggested to implement it. We have been a social species for millenia, it wont change just because there are suddenly less of us. -
My two cents about humanity, bandit skins, and general PK.
flyingmonkey (DayZ) replied to dego locc's topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
It's gone to shit because we only have half an update, so to speak. For now, he's removed the visibility of humanity, and any way to keep track of it - but it's still there, do not forget that. Everything you do is still being recorded down against your humanity score, so just think of the shit that's going to happen when the rest of this humanity update is going to roll by. All those would-be survivors turned killing machines because they have no punishments? I'm sure they will get their just desserts when the time comes. Personally, I wouldn't have removed the old humanity system to add the clothing options until I had figured out a decent replacement, but this is Rocket we're talking about - and your tears are all very delicious.
