Stop modeling DayZ after 28Days Later

If you aren't skilled enough/don't have buddies to watch your back while looting a town, then don't loot the towns. Seriously, know your place. I'm a loner, I dislike global chat and stick to raiding deerstands and only ever raid towns at night. Why would I play like that? Because I know my place, and that is how I survive. If I do find another survivor, I don't shoot them. I watch them - I see if they are going to help me or hinder me, I see how well they avoid zombies, and if I decide that I would be better off being alone I disappear into the forest again. How long you survive is entirely up to the choices you make.

Barbed Wire .. Getting really annoying now

So, you're getting annoyed because someone else sets up a defense and wont let you in? I thought that was the entire point of a defense in the first place. I don't see the problem here exactly, I have taken down many a fence on buildings that I have needed to loot.
  3. If you are one of those players who like to play alone, yet desire chat, then you are pulling at yourself from both sides. You cannot expect to have a good ol' conversation if you are alone in the middle of the forest, you will get bored and you will get lonely. It will make the time you do run into another survivor a big deal, finally you will have someone to talk to, someone to bond with. Doing that from across the other side of the map is just ridiculous. Communication is a game mechanic in this, it is a tool used for people who actually encounter each other. It is not a general chat channel so you can discuss real life politics while you are busy running through the forest to cure your boredom. If you need someone to talk to while running around in the forest I suggest looking at the survivor threads and actively looking for a partner. Zedsdeadbaby: While I know that Rocket never said this was about realism, I think the underlining tone to it is realism. It becomes a gameplay mechanic that simulates realism, you get lonely when you're alone because you have nobody to share experiences with - and this is doing exactly that. It is simulating the feelings that you would normally find in real life with a game mechanic. While it may not be about realism, it certainly simulates it beyond any other game. Personally, I've been playing on both nochat and chat servers since it was first fixed in the old beta patches, chat servers are annoying and take away from the overall experience of the mod. It is the Zombie Apocalypse, it's not about having fun, it's about a lot more than that.

People spawning anywhere destroys tactical play

A spawn buffer around players or cities will be a disadvantage to those trying to log in, you are only switching the boot to the other foot. People could log out hiding in a good spot on a roof or in some bushes, and end up spawning back in the middle of an open field. Instead, these guys have to get their bearings at the same time as finding a good place to hide as soon as they spawn. Not sure what the best solution would be.

no Side chat = Community Growth will be damaged

The only reason you feel the need for global chat is because that is what you have been spoonfed by games for years, if no games had it, you would have adjusted accordingly already and this would be nothing new. If DayZ never had sidechat, you wouldn't be asking to have sidechat, it would just be natural not to have it, and would be using other forms for your social commentaries. You say that this will increase DM because it leaves barely any social exchange left? I say it does the opposite, humans are social creatures and when you starve them of that, they will soon be willing to do anything to have a few conversations instead of blatantly shooting people instead. People who play to PK will always play to PK, nothing will change that.

    Describe a DayZ moment with a gif/img!

Imageshack has this issue, where the URL isn't the same as the URL that needs to be posted to have them show up. Just need to grab the correct one to fix them.

Then it is doing exactly what it is supposed to

no Side chat = Community Growth will be damaged

The entire point is to make you feel lonely, you are? Fucking great, going as planned. Maybe now people wont be so fucking trigger happy the next time they meet up with a few survivors. Now you will actually be able to share experiences with each individual person you meet, instead of the whole map. This isn't supposed to cater to your want of social interaction, this is supposed to be an experience that you create, it is supposed to simulate how you would feel if you were stumbling around in a real zombie apocalypse. Taking away the sidechat helps this along in ways it seems you cannot fathom. Newbies got it hard? I feel for them, but there is a time and place for learning, it's always before you hit start. I remember back in the day when I had to read a fucking 400 page manual on a flight simulator to even learn what the fuck I was doing, try that nowadays with spoonfed kiddies, raised on handouts. When was the last time you had a cert exam and could ask other students or the supervisors the answers? DayZ is a test, to see how well you can do, to prove how good you are. This is meant to raise emotions that other games don't even come close to, and it already does, this is just another one to add to the pile of great ideas that are making this into a unique experience for everyone involved. Don't like it? There are plenty of alternatives that cater for you. Rocket has stated over and over that this was the way he wanted it, and so this is how it will be; he likes your tears, they're delicious. TL;DR You want social interaction? How about stop running around as a loner. If you would rather play alone because you cannot trust people, guess what? You get everything that comes with it. It is going to stimulate emotions no other multiplayer game in the world will. Play along with the experience Rocket is providing, and adapt accordingly.

    Real life by day

There are plenty of offset servers you can join, you just have to find them.

Hunting season 2012 is now OPEN!

One of those super-1337 coastal bandits I see. Don't want to play with the big boys where you are more likely to get killed?

    The Importance of CHKilroy

Heard about DayZ from some friends, decided to look it up on youtube and found CHKilroys videos. Bought OA right then and there after the first episode. If it wasn't for his videos, and the way he presented DayZ in them, I would have probably turned a blind eye to it.

You are listening to the wrong people Rocket.

FYI: MrB has a very, very good idea about what he's talking about, it's not the first time we have met He has background experience in the games industry, and those 3 tips are very good ones. But then, anyone who actually reads the forums for any game could have told you that, because forums are chock full of people that generally fit into 3 categories: -People with bugs -People who complain about everything -People who want things their way and nothing more It would be like basing a new shopping mall on the opinions of thieves and rich people. If this was the direction Rocket wanted it to go and just put out the thread to see what reaction it would get beforehand, then good on him. Listening to forum users is a mistake though, if anything, make polls on log in - inside the game. That is the only way to get a good representation of your population, not just the forum users. Sup MrB, is it refreshing that I'm not ripping into you this time? :P

How often are your camps raided?

It's funny, you think those are good places to hide camps, when really they are on some of the highways that a lot of players would use. To get from Berezino to say, NWAF, I would have visited about 5-7 of your sites, just by walking through my normal route - obviously they weren't set up all at once, but you get the idea that any location can be generally unsafe. Where there's one person that travels somewhere; there are about 50 others, probably more, that travel the same way.

Amazing game takes dive. Player worries.

DayZ is one of those games where if night isn't pitch black, then 90% of people wont use any of the ingame lighting items because they can see fine without them, and it might as well be daytime 24/7. It needs to be pitch black to give players that fear, the claustrophobia you desire. You are a careful player so you don't use lighting items incase you are spotted, I see that, but you can't demand that you should be able to see in the dark because of it. There are items, you make the choice not to use them, so you make a choice not to play. I was playing the other night, running around using my flashlight in short 2 second bursts every few hundred meters just to see if I was heading the right way, I could have walked into a tonne of zombies - I didn't. What I did run into was another player using the same technique, except he has his light on for longer periods of time than me, I followed him. I eventually lost him, because it is hard to follow somebody who knows how to use a flashlight. Chemlights are another good example, you can barely see them if you are too far away, they are just a coloured dot a few pixels across - safe to say that anyone that does see you in the distance will eventually lose you in some bush. I agree that night is going to be tough to start out in. There are plenty of offset servers to join if you dislike night time, personally though, I enjoy how it becomes a superhard survival-horror - as it should be. I play alone, I also play in a group, and we all find it a lot more entertaining when we are bumping into each other with chemlights and torches than running around in daylight or full moons. There is just no fear when you can see at night, none.

When you die and you start a new character, you want to get to your old characters status nearly straight away. That is what he's getting at. Old character is dead man, you screwed up somewhere and got killed. You might be lucky to get back to it in time to get your gear, but that is a risk you are going to have to weigh up by running to the NWAF with noob gear. Personally, when my character dies, I pretend its completely gone. Completely forget about it and start over, enjoying what the game has to offer without being paranoid about my gear - I tell you, it's a lot more fun than running around with leet gear looting the same shit day after day. As for the dark, I personally love the claustrophobic feel of having a flashlight and not being able to see anything but a small section of my screen. Game has balls as a requirement, time to start using them son. Easy mode is gone.

    Its been fun

The map really isn't that big, no matter how large you might believe it is. I played on a server with only 3 others online at the time, given the map size, you'd think I wouldn't see any of them. Running through a random forest on the very edge of the map, boom, run into 2 of them. Doesn't matter where you put stuff, it will eventually be found. Forests are the highways of DayZ, it's hard to hide things in the middle of the road, no matter how remote it may be.
  18. flyingmonkey (DayZ)

That's why i dont play in night servers.

I play with my mates, sometimes they cannot see a thing and it is like a sunny afternoon for me. Restarting the server causes everyone to synch up because they have to all join at the same time again.

Got Dew? Mountain Dew Collectors Society v2.0

First can of soda I found that life, lasted 10 days in my backpack until I drunk it before raiding Stary Sobor, got killed. It was my goodluck charm.

[VIDEO] This is why people shoot first

Direct chat is volume based, you were pretty quiet, wouldn't be surprised if they would have had to of been right next to you to hear you.

    Friendly survivor system (hard-coded 'friendliness')

Don't get me wrong, I get what your idea is down to the dot, just seems like you are forcing something that should be organic. People should be able to just up and backstab their entire group that they have worked to gain their trust, it's part of the game. Having to change to FF on to do that is just going to get you shot by the group as soon as you do it. That's where the forced part comes from.
