I think you have to balance realism with playability and fun. Realistically you would be down after getting hit once with any gun, but that wouldn't make the game particularly fun. I think the balance is pretty good as it is. Although perhaps pistol damage could be bumped up a bit considering their effective range is very short.

I really don't think the issue is with GPU performance with DayZ. I'm running on a Phenom II X6 3.2ghz -HD5770 OC-12GB ram setup and I get 40-50 FPS and 20-30 in cities on High setting with post processing effect turned off. I see people posting with GTX600 series chipsets getting only slightly better results. I think the peer to peer zombie AI and poor servers are the culprits. Since they are completely changing the netcode architecture and simplifying the zombie AI, I think there will be a huge performance increase with standalone.
