How successful would DayZ be on consoles?
Karmaterror replied to kermo50's topic in General Discussion
I got no probs with it going to console.....Arma 2 supports 360 pad, so mapping buttons is doable. I got a friend who (like most who tried a pad 1st) hates m+k. I try to tell him how much more accurate it is, but no, he only play pad. So i used to just give him the 360 pad to have a go on custom missions :) -
Ok, so i made a thread about this for the mod, and thought id recreate it here. Basic idea is that camp stuff shouldnt be just storage. Storage leads to the hoarding, but what if we didnt build storage. What if we built other things, things that visitors to our camps could use. Some of the equipment im thinking is... Carpenters bench - Allows you to turn cut down tree logs into usable lengths of timber (or even build chairs/ other small items to make a camp look alive. Furnace - Would allow you to melt down soft metals, like alluminium, and turn them into simple shapes. Thinking stuff to help with crafting, also stuff like those little tyre spikes. Small garden - Give us the ability to grow foods at our camps. Water tank - Alright i know this is sort of still storage, but im thinking this could store an lot of water. It could require items from both the carpenters bench and furnace to create. In the mod, when you found a camp, destroying it was the best option. There was never a need to have it stay there. Now if you stumbled across a camp, whos owners had built a carpenters bench, or a furnace then you may want to leave the camp be. Knowing you can always come back and use either....untill you build your own ofc. Thats about it, oh any suggestions for other buildable equipment for camps would be good :)

Ok, so i found my first morphine injector today. I inspected it and it mentioned something about addictive behaviour. Is this in yet, or has anyone had any side effects from morphine yet?

I never played the original, why is there 3rd person?
Karmaterror replied to infiltrator's topic in General Discussion
Day z was never described as an fps shooter game, it was never the next competitive deathmatch shooter. It was a zombie survival RPG, and described as a social experiment in its early stages. 3rd person is an integral part of most RPG games, it helps the player build a relationship with there toon as they see him/her interact with the world around them. Everyone assumes that people are using peeks and looking over walls, well I use 1st for combat and 3rd to soak up the atmosphere while running around. Am i putting myself at a dissadvantage in combat? maybe, but i dont really care...most battles are won based on who got the drop on who. When you are being spotted over hundreds of metres, it dosent really matter. Its not like "omg...he peek'd round that city and saw me!!". For me split servers is an acceptable solution. I have friends that play on both, so i will be making a 1PP toon soon. But i will still always prefer to run around in 3rd, and get a true feel for Chernarus :) -
Color degradation from blood loss has to go (loss of visual fidelity)
Karmaterror replied to alleycat's topic in General Discussion
Lol...after you healed....known bug. Just open up menu (esc), then go configure>video....and watch the blur disappear ;) EDIT- A friend just told me he actually has to change his res to fix it, but mine goes away just opening video options. -
Color degradation from blood loss has to go (loss of visual fidelity)
Karmaterror replied to alleycat's topic in General Discussion
Are you eating inbetween these melee battles? Maintaining the "healing" status? Because if you are not then its understandable you are in greyscreen all the time. When you get the status your health will fly back up, and is it not fair to say you might need a rest to regen hp after these 10 battles. Grey screen would be gone inside 10 mins if you get the status. Colour stauration is a great way to reflect hp loss. At one point someone said that the game skips steps, like blurry vission, passing out or not being able to run in the strait line. Well the screen blurs as it greys, and in the mod you passed out a lot from low blood. Considering the overhaull to the food system im sure these mechanics will get the same treatment.More in depth and just as harsh as now, and that makes me a happy chappy :) -
Im against waypoints, the map shrinks loads when ya use those. I would love a working gps (would need battrys), could let us store locations. Then if you die, and provided the shots didn't ruin it, you could find someone's stash lol. Maybe pen+map aswell to write on it. Also could be looted from ya body, so its a gamble to mark stuff. Or could be used for traps....anything lol

Keep blood bags at 1000, nerf saline to 500 :D Dayz.....harsh environment lol Couldn't agree more, that healing process should take a hell of a lot longer. But now I'm curious, with the health vs blood thing. Could I, hypothetically, be on full "health" with no saturation. But be 1 hit from death due to low "blood".

I felt like the healthy thing was an urban myth lol. Earlier today I watched those same vids and within 10 mins healthy status. You really have to cram the food down. I ate maybe 1 bag of rice, 3 tins of something or other then had to wash it down with 2 bottles of water to compensate for rice dehydration. Then 2 cans of drink for the energy value that water didn't give me. Even then i didn't have the status, but i was getting full messages. Five mins later I'v looted more food and drink, then soon as the messages stopped, i gorged again....another 3 cans and 2 sodas. Finally i saw it......Il never get that feeling of achievement from it again lol....but there it was, healing. After a few mins it turned to healthy :)

Day z replicates this perfectly (assuming the Arma 2 mechanics for date are still in). Pitch black nights are either a result of dense cloud or lack of moonlight. It reproduces full moon nights perfectly with added visibility. Locking the server date was a common fix on the mod to stop pitch black nights. I'm not debating that under the right conditions it can be tolerable. But pitch black nights can and do happen, no matter how dilated your eyes are. I agree completely that light souses can be seen for miles around. Using my old example, you could almost make out the people on the top of the mountain form about 1/4 of the way up. I think there is a subtle mechanic for blinding people with torches in the engine. And im sure dilation is in there as well, because in the mod when you removed nvg, everything was pitch and then came back slowly.
-
You are either... 1, not going far enough away from light pollution 2, Hunting in a climate where clear skies allow a hell of a lot of moonlight trough. I live in England, and like Russia, we have overcast weather a lot of the time. Although thinking about it this year i still couldnt see the floor, despite being able to see a lot of stars in the sky at the summit. Without a torch you can still get a feel for the surroundings from the siluettes of the landscape. But no defenition....no tell between a muddy puddle or the path, no seeing a foot tall rock right in front of you. Anything on the floor is just a black void. That should be reflected in the game.

Honest feelings about the Mod & if StandAlone is for me
Karmaterror replied to Marmoo's topic in General Discussion
If your looking for improvments, look to the way the new food/drink system works with the virtual stomach. Or the new (mostly blank) expanse of new map in the north. The % of enetrable buildings will no doubt make those PvP situations all that more intense. But.... If its shiny new features and things that distiguish it from the mod, now is not the time to buy. In many ways this has a lot LESS content than the mod. Most is planned to be added, but (i guess) not for some time. With a predicted alpha period of a year or more, it would be better to wait. Then you can come at it in a year and see whats been done. I would add that if diminished loot was an issue in the mod,i think that will continue into the SA. Making loot much more rare and focousing more on survival. -
Of course the night is dark lol. Have you ever been to a rural area without so much as a streetlamp for at least 5 miles in any direction? Try it, you wont be able to see your hand in front of your face, unless you hold it up to the sky and see the outline against the slightly brighter sky. You wont be able to see the floor, or whats on it, not even the path that you are trying to follow. Most people live in built up areas, or within a less than a mile from some form of light pollution. I remember an old episode of the X files, where they are in some woods miles from the town. Mulder turns to Scully and says, "you know what....living in the city so long i had forgotten how.....dark....night is". Me and my missus laughed because we had the same feeling when we climbed a mountain for new years. Thats something that has become tradition....and we never leave without a headtorch each, and a backup in our bags lol :)

you can buy the "supporter edition" from dayzgame.com (think thats the website....google will help ya ;)) Thats direct from BI from the looks of it, and includes a steam gift of arma 2 complete edition. Its more pricey, but i suppose your getting 2 games :)
-
I like this one. Something else for the loot tables. I can also see funny situations where people left there earplugs in by mistake and carnt hear the guy yelling "get down and drop your guns!" even though hes only a few feet away :)

Hey, i just watched the vids on the health system and it helped me a lot. What i took from it is that there are 3 things to fill....stomach, energy and water. You can fill your stomach but then that takes time to filter into both the energy and water bars. You have to have big stores of both energy and water to regenerate hp. So, put simply, its better to be getting i am stuffed messages and eat/drink when they stop. Apposed to eating and drinking when you get a message that says your hungry :)

Well apart from the street signs, the devs have already said they will focus on everything else you mentioned. Zombies coming trough walls is something to do with the "nav mesh" (they dont use that term, but hammer vet here lol). Something to do with it not being a collision problem but more with the areas on the terrain that are marked for zeds to move within. Theres a lot of posts from the devs about the other things you mentioned so i wouldnt worry, they know it needs fixing and they on top of it :)
-
Share my fave base spots?? no way!! lol :) Mine would be off in the woods in 1 of 3 spots that luckily survived into SA. Building near structures would feel a bit to exposed for me....i like a tight group of lush pine trees to nestle my tents in :)

How to stimulate an Emergent Economy in DayZ - discussion
Karmaterror replied to Roshi (DayZ)'s topic in General Discussion
For me trading is fine as is. Its an extremely high pressure moment, and always should be. We have a great and varied economy, where one day a car wheel could be worth your sniper rifle and ammo. Then the next day you would happily give away the car, for something as small as a morphine shot lol. Well thats in the mod, but i see it going that way as more loot, vehicles and features in general get added :) -
I refuse to believe that so many of humanity would turn to mindless killers in the apocolypse. We are social animals by nature, and in the apocolypse we would be more united but the us vs them aspect. I think for real that many more would avoid killing, as there is no debate that it effects the mind. Saying there is serial killers irl dosent really fly either. I mean if theres so many then why do 90% of the worlds population get on with life, deal with whatever anger they have, and manage not to kill people. I think that the gaming generation has been desensitised to (what they think) killing would be like. When really no one has any idea of what its like to kill another. An example of how hard it is to make one human being kill another (even with just cause) is soldiers. They are trained to control there emotions and shoot when ordered. Yet in Vietnam a staggering percent of new soldiers either fired high, shot to miss, or didnt even shoot at all. Now if someone can do that, after all that training, then i think we can see the true nature of most humans. Beyond your own concious there isnt a way to curb peoples attitude in game. Theres too much of an emphasis on the "kill shot" from other games. Too many just want that instant endorphine rush from getting a kill, because thats what they have been spoon fed for years from "normal" fps games. In the end i hope that dayz gives us other things for the player to get that rush from, and im sure it will. Giving us more to do than just pvp. Im all for bandits randomly killing me, but as it stands, the numbers just dont feel "authentic".....and that is what Dean says hes going for.
-
Both would get a chance, dont judge a book by its cover lol. Make them see me from a distance, then lower my wep. If they shoot, return fire/run. But that's pretty much what i do every time lol I think most shoot because they don't want to loose gear, but if you show fast its not your intention, you sometimes get the same reaction. Them knowing you could have, but didnt, seems to help aswell :)

What do you think of fresh spawns being able to punch?
Karmaterror replied to Chungmugong's topic in General Discussion
The punching is great IMO. Just needs balancing. It isn't easy to knock someone out with 1 punch, but a lot is down to the person receiving said punch lol. The force is different based on where you land and again, who your hitting. Don't forget aswell how easy it is to break bones in your hand when using bare knuckles. Hence why boxers (pre-gloves) only used body shots (and large amounts of whiskey) to save there hands during a match. Even today its possible to break a bone in your hand or wrist when wearing gloves, (though quite unlikely). Maybe 3-4 hits to the head and you would be unconscious. Taking body shots shouldn't knock you down but, when introduced, drain your stamina. Making it harder to run away :) EDIT - Just thought of little addition, body shots should drain stamina, and your punches should get weaker, aswell as the decreaced run speed with low stamina. With all that in you could effectively subdue someone, rob them, beat them in the gut a bit so they carn't chase after you and leave :) -
Yeah in the mod there was only tents at first. Later we got stashes that were much more concealed, but held considerably less. Also you could always have driven a car somewhere and popped the tyres....instant tent :D They didnt persist over servers. Im hoping for the SA though they move away from just storage items, and give us more utility things to build. If we get that then we could find people just visiting our camps and leaving them intact.....so they can come and use the facilities without building there own. Or untill they build there own....then trash it. In the mod the only thing to do really was trash the camp (denial of enemy resourses we used to call it lol). Or you could skim some ammo every few days and hope they didnt notice. The best way to do it was put everything you want in one of the vehicles....blow the rest and then crush the tents before leaving. With utility, just destroying everything may not be the first choice :)

Im sure some of what im going to say has already been said , so sorry in adavance :) I got no problem with PvE servers....in fact on the mod i had one in my bookmarked list for when i just wanted some laughs with people. But i am against tem doing it on the public hive, for reasons i know have been mentioned. Like, Gearing up in safety and swapping servers (thats also one of my problems with the pub hive its self, but back on topic...). Id say that if you rent a server on the pub hive, then make it PvE, is that not akin to cheating. I mean dont get me wrong, most would probably use it as intended, for some interacting when your tired of getting shot by every single player you meet. But many would abuse it. The server provider is then technicaly providing the platform for cheating, so is it so different from getting a VAC ban and loosing your initial spend on the game. I do know from experiance that the constant tension is completly lost when playing on these servers. Its just not that "DayZ" feeling. But thats no reason for them not to exist. Now when private hives arrive, there should be the freedom for admins to enforce PvE if they want to. Not trough server settings or anything (i mean it shouldnt be a built in feature) but trough something like a whitelist, so they can get a community of like minded players who will enjoy the moments repreve form the KoS fest. Private hives....come and save us :)
