    Is this smart?

When I read "navigating with a keyboard and mouse scares the living crap outta me"... that was funny. You will find that PC can beat console at every single thing (or has the ability to) and 2x, except ease-of-use. Consoles were debatabely designed as an ease-of-use system for games. Just plug it in, put in a game and play. PC can be a bit more difficult, but it's better in the long run. Using a keyboard and mouse can be a better experience, especially if you buy a gaming keyboard and mouse. These mouses usually have about 13 buttons or so, allowing for many controls to be mapped and executed very easily, and with ArmA, is an absolute blessing for its many actions. Gaming mice are aerodynamically designed, and flow very smoothly in use. The gaming keyboard has configurable keys for you to use, as well. You can plug in your XBox controller and use it, your PS3 one wouldn't work in the computer as there are no drivers for it, I presume. Either way, PS3 won't work. Many of the controls for ArmA are useless in DayZ, so you might be able to fit all of them on with button combinations and such, but you'd have to be smart about it. I myself deleted all the useless controls ArmA had and remapped what I did use. It doesn't make too much of a difference anyway, but it's nice. A joystick is nice for vehicle controls because it makes steering easy and fun to use, especially in a helicopter. A PC gaming controller will be expensive for a good one, but will be well worth it if you wish to invest in PC from now on (and trust me, you should!). I've always wanted a controller for ArmA jus' cuz, and I have one, but I can't find the disk for the program, and it was hard to configure anyway, because it wasn't a good one.... lesson learned. Advice: watch out for hackers. Do NOT get involved with them whatsoever, or you'll find yourself in a worse place. You might get tempted, but it never ends well, no matter what it is.
  2. You could have a giant clanbase in the hotel, and it'd be awesome. But here's how I think rocket will handle the interior: -what it has now -elevators broken -stairs broken on the stairwell -done.

The good old days of Dayz!

This still happens to me. A lot. It's a lot of fun to team up with them or just help them and wander away. It feels awesome to know that I'm the guy standing between them and death (or a hard time). I rarely shoot anyone unless I'm defending a position with dangerous people around, or they seem really threatening. The old days are still here for me, and I can't wait to see what the new ones bring!

    Too hard since 1.7.5.1

That, or they should run to it, but the sound, so if you move and they don't see you, they don't find you. This happens "sometimes", where I have been able to get away from the area of the noise and avoid detection, but more often than not, they know where "I" am instead of where the sound came from before they can even see the place. Beans. Where's the guy you're agreeing to's post? Beans there too.

    NO MORE BAMBIs!

I've noticed something with DayZ. You find a lot of player bodies lacking something: weapons. Defenseless people that get killed before they have a chance. How can this change? This can change by adding a few simple mechanics to be always available to everyone, especially players without any weapons. Strangulation Basis- A player that is not moving or is moving very slowly can be approached and strangled by another player, knocking the other player out. Features- Success rate will depend what weapon the other player has and how heavy it is, (how many hands they use as well, so unarmed players have a higher success rate) and if either player was moving when the action was preformed. The victim can fight back, but I'm still working on a suitable mechanic that won't break DayZ atmosphere to suggest. Disarming Basis- A player can knock a weapon out of another player's hand. Features- If one or both players are moving fast, the disarm will simply knock the weapon away. If they are moving slowly, the player can take the weapon from the victim, with the same success rate applying. If the player already has a weapon, he throws the one he disarmed away. There is no retaliation mechanic, but I think a quick-time dodge or even just pressing 'x' or 'z' to dodge should work. Pushing/Shoving Basis- A player can slow or knock zombies or players to the ground and off ledges. :3 Features- If a player is being chased and just wants to get away, he can preform a push or a shove, which slows or knocks the enemy down. This can resolve a lot of around the corner combat, as one guy goes down and the other has time to get away. This should be simple, and should have no definite success rate, with no modifiers to it. Doesn't matter what weapon or anything. If you noticed, these mechanics work together. You can shove someone to stun them, and strangle/disarm them. If you also notice, it does not let you KILL anyone, so new players would still not be lethal, unless they shoved you off a ledge. Adding these mechanics, in my opinion, would enable unarmed players to survive if they took advantage of it. Right now, it's pretty impossible, which isn't fair. If this is added, things are now fair, even if you died. As a plus, shooting doesn't always have to be an option, since you could see someone, knock them out, take their stuff, and be on your way. It doesn't have to end in death now! That one single zombie that just won't quit following you, after the 5 others did, you can now knock to the ground and get away before they get back up! So what does the community think?

    NO MORE BAMBIs!

Ok, so an official announcement from the OP: This thread is at a standstill to preserve the original idea and keep it from becoming to narrow and linear in how everything should be performed. Discussions can still take place on this, but mechanics will not be added/updated to the original thread, and discussions are preferred to pretain to situations these kinds of things could be used, how it could benefit/not benefit the community, and other opinions on the subject. Stopping the progression of mechanics in this thread will make it an idea more people can agree on and develop themselves, allowing for a wider perspective and more information to actually be put into a finished product (if it becomes a feature). I thank you all for coming!

Ok... when did I ever say anything about skillpoints? You are misinterpreting what I say. I mean player skill. As in real skill. For instance, marksmanship. In ArmA, you get better at marksmanship (hitting people with your bullets) by doing it more often. That's how this feature needs to be. So I think you just misunderstand me. I, however, love that idea in the spoiler. I think it's excellent. Kinda like an MGS sort of thing and I think that it would blend in fine, if using regular ArmA scroll wheels and controls like you say it would.

NVG glasses in 1.7.5.1 [warning: spoiler]

That wasn't my only reason. It was my first post in thread. A lot of people took it a way I didn't mean it. I explained it. Should I now be pestered again by the same thing I already explained? I spent about an hour replying to everyone that quoted it, and anyone that has now can be directed to that post for all informational inquiries on why I can't share a simple opinion without it turning into a giant wall of text. Everyone who attacked it made it bigger than it is, not me. Seen?

  12. Those who have played ArmA: Armed Assualt may remember the large island in many different ways. Today, though, those who have, and those who haven't get the opportunity to look at the place in a new light. Today, we have DayZ: Sahrani Players of Chernarus may remember seeing the famous billboard of a girl in her bikini, advertising Sahrani as a tourist paradise. The billboard has also been in Lingor, and likely many other maps, as including a half-naked female in part of your creation just adds icing to the cake for most people. Still, whenever I looked at the billboard, I always wondered, "What is Sahrani? Is it real?" I'm here to tell you that yes, it is, and it's a wonderland. You'll notice two things when you spawn in Sahrani. The first one, is that there is nothing telling you your location. The second is: You have never seen anything like this before. Sporting a sort of Panthera-like feel, Sahrani island is dominated by pine trees and forests with small clearings in between. The inspiration Panthera took from Sahrani is evident in the common (but unique) beautiful rockfaces in the mountains. The shores are mostly rocky, steep, or both, but you can find some nice beachfront area to have that picnic of baked beans and coke with that special someone. Though there are not more mountains than you can count like in Panthera, Sahrani has many level changes, though beautifully handled by Bohemia, as the player can easily trek them, and they fit into the terrain nicely. Every tree seems to have its place. The first tall forest you find is like opening a gift on Christmas morning you didn't even know you wanted so much. Among the beauty, though, it soon distracts at the urgency of survival. You don't know where you are, and in Sahrani, that's a big problem. Towns are scarce. Following the road for 10 minutes I found much beauty, but lacking in the kind I can convert into loot. Here was my experience first spawning in Sahrani. From the first second till the imminent server restart. Shots. 5 of them. Now more. AK, 200 meters away. Dust in the air, kicking up dirt... there was a vehicle. There was a man with a vehicle and a gun, 200 meters away, shooting it off. I waited. I heard a slam of a car door, the rev of an engine, and more dust. Through it, though, I could see an offroad. I ran. Darting from tree to tree, I followed the car down the road. I could still see the dust, I hadn't lost it yet, and it looked like it was slowing down. I might get this- It started coming back. Slammed onto the ground, I begged that whoever was in hadn't seen me. They continued on the road, and I got up immediately, repeating my strategy. Sprinting down the street, I was eating the dust from the thing, but atleast I was close. I got to the top of a hill, still on the trail. When I got to the top, the last of it swirled, then faded away. It was gone. I busied myself in getting screenshots at that point. Trying to show off the beauty of the land. In ArmA, the shots looked much better than when translated outside of the game. For a while, there was just a gravel road. Soon, though, I found the next best thing: Right, right, and how could I forget?! As an added bonus, you may spawn with a balaclava! My first town was a small settlement. I first saw it by an enchanting inn just outside of its boundaries. Inside, I found a dead man who looked as if he had been mauled by zombies. He was on the second floor, so burying him would not have done much good.... I grabbed a Lee Enfield, a nice change from my crowbar, a revolver, a few bandages, painkillers, matches, and some food and water. I was a forest ranger in the right place! Built at the base of a hill, between that and the coast, it was a quaint, quiet place. It didn't seem the man with the vehicle has passed through recently. With the server a minute until restart, I sprinted up the hill away from the town, as to not ruin the spawning for anyone who would come after. I was done with the town, but I had a feeling that I would remember it for a long time. As I ran up the hill, I heard a zombie yell in recognition, just as I noticed on the screen: "Session Lost". My first impression of Sahrani is that it's a beautiful landscape full of new things to explore. Woodland survival will be a big part of it, and so will combat in these regions, most likely. No matter if you've played it in Armed Assault or are a "newb" to it now, playing Sahrani DayZ is sure to give you some new experiences with a lasting effect. ----- DayZ Horror has taken the liberty of dedicating a dedicated server to the enjoyment of the community, and development of the map. They house the developers in their own private section in the TeamSpeak, and give them an area on their forums for suggestions for the map. There is a changelog for the patch (v0.21), and you can see the progress in implementing base-building by use of crafting books and resources, as well as some unbanned weapons and other changes, all on the download page! The server averages about 16 players, usually 20 though the afternoon to the evening during the week. They offer a TeamSpeak for players on their servers, as they have general channels, and 2 channels for groups of friends. There are multiple clans that play on the server, trying to stake their claim of the land. If you'd like to join the community, and/or one of these clans, you can head over to http://dayzhorror.com/. Register, customize your profile, and check out the groups! On the homepage, the first announcement has the Sahrani download links for 32-bit and 64-bit systems. The first 2 links are for the installer for the map, and below you will find the manual installs, that will redirect you to another page with the actual manual installs linked, so you'll just have to click on the same link on the NEW page. There is also a video on how to set up Sahrani with DayZ commander, and if you're still having trouble, there is always someone on TeamSpeak willing to help you! You can find our forums linked in a tab on the same page, as well as a description of the clans and applications for them. Applications only take an hour or two at most, provided you apply at a convenient time (i.e. NOT 12 A.M.). If you want to get reviewed faster, head on the TS and tell the group you've done it! The servers either have active admins, or there will be someone on TeamSpeak that can easily rectify the problem. If you have not noticed, the TeamSpeak is quite a motif in the DayZ Horror community. If you join, you get access to support as well as many other things than your would without his open form of communication. Remember: if the channel is locked or you can't poke them, opening a text chat client is ALWAYS an available option. We at DayZ Horror encourage you to join the fun, and help us develop the Sahrani map for DayZ! Become a community member and get the full experience, and have people to play with. Enjoy Chernarus, Taviana, and Sahrani servers that you KNOW are supported and well-looked after. Hackers are not tolerated by any means, and ban appeals are. Just a forewarning. Have fun, everyone, and we'll hope to see you soon!

    NO MORE BAMBIs!

One hit-kill. How. Many. Times. Do. I. Have. To. Say. It? None of these moves kill you. They only knock you out. They are hard to do, and very situational. VERY. The only way you should be getting killed by any is if YOU made some mistake, making your death essentially your fault. You leave your flank open and unchecked for 5 mins while sniping? Your fault. You stop to loot a dead player in the street and don't look around? Your fault. See what I'm saying? It's not OP. Strangling requires it to be stealth, which most likely in combat, and especially in most situations with newspawns, it isn't. Pushing someone just knocks them on their ass, doesn't even do anything else, allowing for you to get away and not get shot. Disarming.... do you know how hard it is to wrestle a gun out of someone's hands? You're better off putting a finger to their head and telling them to do it themselves, lol. About the chance vs. skill. The skill is you getting close to do the moves. The positions have to be right, the speed has to be right, you have to really know what you're doing and execute it quickly. IRL, even if you do those things, they might still go wrong. And they do- a lot. Not only with the fact that it might not matter if you were really skilled and you still failed, but that simulating skill in this kind of combat in a game has not been done very well at all, unless the game has tons of quick-times in which that shows reflex, not strength, quick thinking, and strategy which you need more of in a fight than anything. I think it's better to simulate it based on your chances if everyone was in the same boat. Sometimes you just don't win, and there's no reason why. Not to mention, that some players aren't good at quick times and button mashing. You can't really get better at those things. There's just a certain point where you stop, and it's a skill in terms to the player that not everyone is equal at (which is good) but you can't improve on (which makes it unfair) as if it's a skill and meant to be used this way getting better at it should be an available option. There isn't one I can see that fits DayZ. So I dunno what you want from me.... Lee. And sorry for the immaturity in the last post (and maybe a bit in the beginning of this one) I was pissed off.

If you would like to quote this, would you atleast, oh, I dunno, read through a few more pages? I have replied to the same, misunderstood bastard so many times, that I'm beginnning to think most people who come to this thread (like you) are quite daft, and unable to atleast skim through anything but the first page! Why don't you go read what I said to the others, hm? Before you waste my time coming here to find another guy like you trying to get a +1 on me by mocking my post and saying the same thing so many others did. Do what you learned in elementary and READ. You have a HUGE advantage over those elementary kids, but reading won't be removed, now will it?

NVG glasses in 1.7.5.1 [warning: spoiler]

Lol, a lot of my posts are about people sucking it up and realizing that this is a survival game, and that you aren't always meant to be OK, and that you need to survive whatever is thrown at you. But this just isn't realistic. These NVGs give such a clear picture. They allow people with them to do so much. It takes away from the survival part of the mod. You can't survive something that you can't see. You have no control over it. It is so easy to take advantage of things when you have those glasses. And the gamma. Remove abusing gamma and lower the effectivness of NVGs so they're fair, and I will not have ANY problem whatsoever. It's just ridiculous right now. I spent 4 hours on Dobry with a DMR and NVGs looking at Electro, and I knew exactly what was going on all the time. I could see anything I wanted clear as day. If I was going to pop anyone, they had no defense. Doesn't matter if I was a sniper or not. If I'd gone down with my AK they couldn't do much either so long as I didn't do anything stupid I wouldn't during the day. The point is, you can't talk about this mod being difficult in regards to this, because you can't really survive someone with NVGs unless they miss, or are stupid and you figure out they're there. Otherwise you're at that mercy, and there's nothing you can do. Nothing difficult about it.

    NO MORE BAMBIs!

The point is it's hard. These moves aren't supposed to be OP, that's why. They're a second line of defense. A last resort. Or, a new way of doing things. A way of neutralizing targets without killing them. If they're in, trust me, you'll find a use for it.

    NO MORE BAMBIs!

Want to hear a secret? Ok... here it is: (Life's not fair!) Sometimes guys sneak up behind you, chop you in the neck with their hand, and you have no way to defend yourself. Now for the real reply. Why your argument is invalid (in my terms). 1) It's hard to do the moves. Well, there you go. If you were a good player, you would know the guy was coming to try and CQC you. Basically, it's just at that point up to you're luck and his luck. You can both get out of it, or do it, sure, but whether you succeed is based on luck, and that close, if both know what they're doing skill doesn't really matter. It's gotta be player skill, the main reason. 2) When this happens to you, most likely you are trying to kill someone or are dangerous. If you get CQC'd in a town that you KNOW has someone in it, you deserved it. It's not that hard to watch, and the victim moving drastically decreases the success rate. 3) Minigames in DayZ? Pfffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffft. Lol, that would be stupid. What happens when your wrestling on the floor and a zombie comes over? Another player? Yeah, good luck coding that in, getting it to work, making it fair, and making it liked. It's gotta be fast and simple, or it doesn't work. If the victim has time to struggle (which in my idea means they get away), then your opportunity is gone. 4) I did a thing where the player character shouldn't know what's going on if the user doesn't. Your character shouldn't start countering automatically, you should do it yourself, otherwise not. That guy who came outta nowhere just lost for even a more BS reason than chance, just because you knew it wouldn't matter, when you got the damn button tapping you could easily do it and win. 5) We're not talking to Mr. Death, here. All these moves do not kill you, so chance isn't to bad, put up to your life. They could shoot you afterward, but if they had gotten any gun, even not yours, they would have done it anyway... so it really wouldn't matter there.

Takistan... sucks. You're too loud, too visable, can't get rid of zombies in the buildings because just about every single one will get you trapped. Fallujah... sucks, same reasons, and has a giant airfield everyone goes to and just milks the barracks for weapons. Starts killing everyone... Try again? Ok.. Panthera. Rural. Crashes. Everywhere. 2 (or 3, maybe) airfields as well.

What if rocket (or ANY other dev member, out of the what, 500?), being the smart man he is, realizes this, and removes the ability to raise your gamma? Say he tested it, any any computer with a reasonable brightness already should be able to run the game with the default gamma, and actually have it be a bit bright? I think it's definitely possible to remove this kind of thing, or keeping it from being abused. I don't raise my gamma. That's BS. I expect others to have the kind of decency not to piss and whine that it's dark and deal with it. Nighttime sucks, but you live with it, you don't raise your gamma.... Now what? Now that gamma is gone, are NVGs better? Now how will everyone see in the dark oh god our bullshit baby way has been thrown out the window someone call the cops this guy is trying to kill me. Think about it if players can't abuse their settings. I think I second the guy who said that AS50s and their whole family don't belong in a survival game. The last of them sure would not be in Chernarus, that's for certain. An AS50 is so heavy, you have to fire it while laying down or you'll probably be herniated, and it definitely won't be accurate. The spotter has to carry ALL the gear because just the gun is heavier than both their gear combined. You would move at a speed of 5mph running as fast as you could with this big, bulky .50 cal anti-matierial rifle that has no business being in a game where there is no need for such a gun. Except maybe helicopters, but you can take that out with an LMG just fine. Or even a DMR.

    DayZ Standalone Discussion

Well, sure, as in every multiplayer alpha game, when the players start to pour in after the CLOSED testing, with (example to DayZ) 1000 players, going up probably 75x that, the game will be absolutely crushed. People will cry the game is dying. Other than crashes, I don't expect much more problems to last that long except the bugs that are the cause/post effect of them. Still, we'll see, and I don't plan on crying, so I guess this alpha will set my standard of expectation. I think you mean a bit more of what the game has become, and that makes sense too. But, if you follow the rocket example, you think you can do better, you do it, so until I can, I'm not going anywhere, and I'd hope others feel the same.

I give many, many reasons so that by the time you're done reading, hopefully your argument is invalid. I don't care what you think. I do what I do, and I have no problem with it. You do? Well the only argument I have there after explaining myself is, I really don't give a fuck. You still read it, anyway.
