Some of the best DayZ moments and memories have involved the side chat, at times its pure comedy gold. I totally understand the desire for realism, but it will remove a lot of fun from the game without it. -

Dying didnt fix the problem for me. My problem started when I ran out of the debug forest to the west.

Ive tried deleting characters, deleting my saved profiles in the arma 2 documents directory, reinstalling the whole game and still no difference.

Got the same problem, completely invisible character both to myself (3rd party mode) and other players.
