Comparison of DayZ Weapons For New Players

I run into the nearest building to slow zombies down and stop players from shooting me while I'm distracted.

When is it Okay to KoS?

I can see your argument, but then there's the semantics on how the game is supposed to be played. If you're playing Monopoly and your friend says they start with an extra 2 million dollars, do you stop playing or show him the rule book?

    Just saw Rocket again.

I remember the first time I *actually* saw Rocket, in DayZ. I saw him, and was wondering, "What skin is he wearing? I've never seen that before! I must be a hacker!" I emptied a clip of FN FAL in his general direction. He spun around and (I'm guessing) noscoped me with a L1196A1....

Comparison of DayZ Weapons For New Players

280 minutes and a youtube video comparing all the pistols will uploaded. I collected 5+ magazines and 1 of every pistol type and killed a few zombies + a few players (bandits of course). What I found is that all the pistols are in the 1-5 bullet kill range against zombies and 2-6 against players. The weakest, of course, was the PDW per-bullet, but the most effective PvP was the PDW.

    A good pvp friendly server

Check out PastaDeath. It's US east-coast based, but has primarily west European players. Talk about PvP friendly... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UVjfb4eziFg

When is it Okay to KoS?

Furthermore: What do you do when trapped in a giant gunfight, consisting of over 30 people, who you don't know or trust? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UVjfb4eziFg
  10. I'm a giant hypocrite for 2 reasons. 1: I don't like players that KoS, but I kill bandits and ghillie/AMR owners on sight. I'm too paranoid to let bushes with 1-hit kill capability to run around near me. 2: I don't like players that KoS, but if I hear gunfire and come across a fight in a city like Cherno, I don't take any chances; I usually end the fight by killing both sides, unless I know without a doubt who was KoSing who (ie, if I see a bandit shoot a FAL at an unarmed player, or a player that is running away, I only kill the bandit) There's a lot of "Grey" between when it's okay and when it isn't okay to kill people. If I may share a video, as an example of when risks just can't be taken... There was a GIANT gunfight all over the north-east (I think?) of Elektrovodsk. It was ridiculous how many players were involved-it seemed like the whole 60 player server was there. I joined the fight by only killing bandits and trying to save survivors, but it seemed like everyone in camo or a ghillie was out for my blood and shooting at them made good players think I was a prick. I couldn't very well run away in an area FULL of bandits and snipers. I killed 10+ people in 20 minutes. I am not proud... except for the 500 meter headshot on the running bandit. Anyone that shoots that shoots at me dies unless they've got a really good excuse and I'm not already aiming at them. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UVjfb4eziFg

    Proper Kill Counter

Killing zombies isn't fun anymore. One headshot, and they're dead. One false step going down hill, and they're dead. Hide indoors, and they'll slow to a crawl before getting bored and leaving (which I don't mind!). You can hide on a rooftop and hope their pathfinding doesn't locate your ladder. A simple flare makes them go running off (which is fun at night for flagging bandits). What I want to see is a community badge system for the DayZ standalone; I want to be able to put some kind of code on my profile or in my signature that will keep track of how many zombie kills my DayZ account has total and on the current life, bandit kills, humanity, how many blood transfusion I've administered, how many cans of beans I've eaten, how much soda I've drank, and my 2 currently equipped items. JUST MAYBE, if I have not yet asked for too much, I could also get a picture of my character holding his primary weapon that will show what clothes/items I'm wearing and what backpack I have. I feel like making DayZ a little more competitive in this manner will make American/Russian players want to play more, and the Hero-related aspects (bandages and blood transfusions) will give the "Nice Europeans" something to feel good about. I'm sorry if the stereotypes offend you, but I've never been shot on a east-European server (other than Russian ones), or even shot-at without an apology. I personally play American servers for better ping and so I can kill bandits.

Wait, you DO want color-coated items, regardless of what they look like when looted?

    Change Weapon Damage for StandAlone

Really, they are? It seems I'm out of touch, 'eh? :) I like the 9mm bubble rounds. I don't know what their actual name is, but the tip is a blue plastic that breaks when fires and it either fires a "Shotgun spray" of pellets or little slivers, to prevent over-penetration in home defense.

Would private hives exist without hackers?

At this point, because everything required for a private server is already out, Rocket couldn't take that power away from us without some bullcrap like tagging official servers with an ID that has to be interpreted correctly to join, and releasing an update for DayZ to interpret that update... Although you could just not update your DayZ and continue private hives.

Install ArmA II + OA for DayZ?

After they both download, copy everything from your addons folder in your ArmA 2 folder into addons for ArmA 2 OA. That'll essentially install ArmA 2 into OA, giving you Combined Operations. PMC and BAF will add themselves to ArmA 2 OA on their own. Get the latest beta patch and install it for OA. In your OA folder, there should be "Expansions, Beta" Take the arma2OA.exe out of beta and put it over/replace the ArmA2OA.exe in your ArmA 2 OA folder. Put everything from DayZ into your addons folder (ArmA 2 OA). Launch ArmA 2 OA. That SHOULD give you everything you need + PMC + BAF. :)
  16. I am a DayZ hero. I have earned the Hero skin both in-game on the "Official servers" and on several private hive servers. And gosh darn it, I'm pretty proud of that fact. I've revived, saved, and tranfused the dead, only for them to wake up and kill me. And it pisses me off-but I always get my skin back, and my gear. I'm not trying to brag. As of the time of writing, there is a 1 hour, 8 minute (or is it 1 day 8 hours?) life span expectancy. I have lived on active servers, running in and out of Chernogorsk and Elektrovodsk with guns blazing, without getting hit by a player or zombie, several times a day. Unlike most people, I played and beat the ArmA 2/OA campaigns on easy and the next-to-hardest setting (hardened?) before I'd heard of DayZ. I make my own missions (for my own use, not distribution) and my temporary folders are so full of unzipped .pbos for editing mods that I'm missing a good 4GB or so of my hard drive. I'm experienced in the vanilla game and DayZ. I wasn't always a Hero. I started out like an a**hole bandit, just like everyone else. It was carefree, it was fun; the very first gun I found was a FN FAL given to me by a man who had just morphined my broken legs. He found two 7.62s in his back. And five minutes later, when he respawned and looted what was left of his body, I found a grenade-primed and at my feet. Talk about embarrassing for a first kill, but also a teachable moment: A**hole's never prosper. I ruined that man's day-through terrible glitches I had deleted his M107 and 10 magazines of ammo from existence and something happened to his FN ammo (don't ask me what; I don't know). I'm rambling, but this is coming to a point: Being a bandit ruins the game, but so does being a Hero. Imagine these two scenarios: Steve (a raging noob) signs into the game after buying CO and nerdgasming over FrankieOnPcIn1080p videos. He thinks, "I'm going to be a Rambo lone-wolf awesome awesomeness and kill all the zombies by myself! WEEEEEE!" He gets lucky and finds a makarov and a can of beans. Then comes Apple Jaxc (a Hero). "Hey Steve, here's a Remington 870 shotgun and (15 slugs*3 packs) of ammo! Also, here's these sodas and a blood transfusion, have a nice day." What went wrong there? Steve struck out on his own and instead in popped me, giving him free shizness without him putting any effort into the game. Even if the weapon isn't good, it makes his achievement of finding the makarov look like a crappy waste of the last 3 hours. I was nice or helping him, but I also impacted his ability to play the game. From thereonout, he'll expect more of that very same interaction, and that eliminates the tension and fear (the fun!) of the game; "Why should I give a dam if Apple Jaxc will just give me an AK next time I day anyway?" Scenario 2: Steve finds his makarov. In comes ApleJacx (bandit): "HEY F**GOT, DIE!" *bang bang bang* Steve has been killed. Now those last 3 hours were a complete waste of time; he has to completely restart! HOWEVER, our Bandit wannabe here has taught Steve the value of life and the dangers of DayZ; the game is now more tense, and more fun because he knows there are a**hole bandits ready to shoot him without warning. Scenario 1, the game was ruined by removing the challenge. Scenario 2, Steve rage quit for 2 hours, then came back eager for revenge. I'm not trying to down play how Heroism can improve the game experience. When I first starting playing, this nice man gave me a blood transfusion after a nasty zombie fight and we rode his boat into Chernogorsk. He showed me how to sneak past zombies and where to look for loot. He became my mentor. We played at least 5 total hours together, and in the end, I had a Hero skin and new the path to greatness in DayZ, without being a bandit a**hole. I had a FN FAL and an ALICE day pack with a AS50 and a few mags of ammo for each gun, hunting supplies, full tool belt, NVGs... Then one day, he was sneaking into Elektro. *Sniff* I was overwatch, and tried to tell him 2 bandits were entering the town from the south railroads. He was too far away, so I tried to scare them away... I pulled out a flare and chucked it as hard as I could-and it stuck to my friend. Hit him in the head and stuck there. Dead of night, and my friend lights up like the fourth of freaking July. I wanted to help him, I did, but all hell broke loose-a bus of 4 more bandits blazed into Elektro. The two other bandits opened fire. All the zombies, for 1 kilometer around, attacked. It was a massacre. A bloody massacre that took my mentor, my friend from me. He had taught me to kill, to survive, to strive; I had repaid him in ironic death. His Heroism changed me as a person, for better or worse. I knew what it meant to players to befriend them, supply them, show them around. If it wasn't for him, I'd have quit DayZ. He met me after 3 bandit-related deaths, falling off a cliff, a satchel charge gone wrong, being hit by a car, and several zombie-related incidents. I wouldn't be writing this article now. Has any bandit ever made you want to play, for a reason better than petty revenge? DayZ would be a really boring game without bandits, but exactly how much do they contribute to the game? Do they hurt your experience more than Heroes? How many Heroes are Bandits in disguise?

Comparison of DayZ Weapons For New Players

I don't like to rely on the PDW, although it is nice. :)
  18. Are you saying lootable clothes should changed colors based on what faction you're in? IE, 100% of the hoodies automatically turn red for bandits or blue for heroes, and all pants are tan for bandits but jeans for heroes? Something like that? I don't like idea for 2 reasons: 1: It breaks the fourth wall. I want the new challenge of telling friends from foes. 2: It makes machinimamating impossible. What if you want 4 very distinct characters for a cinematic DayZ series? The tough guy in all black, the farmer in a plaid shirt and jeans, et cetera? If everything is color coated, individuality is impossible.
  19. We live, die, laugh and cry. DayZ makes us throw our hands in the air in bursts of excitement and smash our keyboards with fists of anger. We take screenshots and videos to commemorate and remember our times, good and bad, whether they be wins or fails. So why don't we give each other a good laugh and share our experiences? Instead of crying, let's see someone ELSE fail for once, and laugh at them! Jerry Springer style, I want to bring joy to the forums. Submissions to the Win and Fail Competition can have no more than one picture and video per post. If there is just a picture, provide a SHORT explaination of what happened, and title your post "My Win," "My Fail," or something along those lines. My Double Fail http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kMPwAdYIv4o Skip to about 10 for the first fail, and 35 for the second. (or watch the whole video?) I discovered gravity and the power of zombies.

    DayZ Wins and Fails Competition

I made an AMAZING chopper landing a few weeks ago. I braked from 120mph to 5, although I fucked up the chassis when I hit the dirt. 12 of the 20 in the chopper bailed (it was a huey in Takistan) before a hacker teleported us to about 100 feet up and away. Like the idiot I was, I had landed instead of hovering; there wasn't enough time to spin the rotors back up before we wrecked. :(

    Proper Kill Counter

What if you rigged a camera to fire bullets (that don't do damage/hit anything), or what if the shutter going off attracted zombies away from you?

    Change Weapon Damage for StandAlone

I really appreciate the picture, man; I haven't found a good way to explain it before. And I guess I'm wrong... I thought the reversing piston was placed slightly forward/down. Now that I think about it, MY version of the AK107 is really dumb. :)
  23. I only "KoS" people with the bandit head wrap, or if they have a ghillie suit and a sniper rifle. I wish zombies weren't a continuing spawning thing, and I'm really glad that DayZ standalone is going to spawn each zombie at server start so there's a finite version per restart; a team of snipers clearing out the edge of Elektro followed by some M4SDs or something to mop up the zombies inside buildings would be amazing.
