What ever Happend to the original DayZ?
applejaxc replied to *Exile* Sami's topic in Mod Servers & Private Hives
You forgot: "Free M9SD!" "Full gear!" "Free NVGs!" ...or worse... "PvP BANDITS ONLY NO HEROES FREE AKs!" And everyone is running around with a gold AKS/revolver. I remember once someone let me run his Private Hive server for a week (he was busy and couldn't let his dedicated device run, so he gave me the .pbos and whatnot) The server went from, "Custom weapons, rMOD, free vehicles, super spawns, no zombies" to total apocalyptic hell. Spawns changed 50% normal (They were 300% normal before! WTF?!), and ammo spawning was 25% normal. x3 zombies spawned, and no longer slowed down indoors (I found a fix for getting running zombies up stairs. I wish Rocket would talk to me >.>) I know I'm going to be called an a*shole for "Ruining his server," but everyone on the server loved it-in fact, players per day went up by like 3% or something, which seems like nothing, but it's growth. All the bandits and their precious AS50's ran out of ammo... And the most beautiful thing happened. With the dedicated server stat tracker, I was making a line-chart comparing the number of bandits to heroes (not by hand; I have a PC program for it), and the bandit chart spiked as everyone killed each other for the last bits of ammo (the irony), then nosedived. Instead of getting sniped, you'd find a cluster of bandits with fireaxes and crowbars trying to mug you for beans, but wouldn't get close if you were holding a gun because no one had any bandages. Slowly, even the no-gun bandits disappeared; you saw groups of survivors/heroes mowing down zombies in a giant, dark-age battle of good vs evil. The bandit population went from 9-something% of the total server to 50% on the sixth day, the day before he came back. I remember because I was blasting "What is Love?" by Haddaway when I checked the status. Singing and sit-dancing, as I'm prone to do. :) So my friend comes back, and at first he's like... "Wtf? Dude, there's no ammo in the NW airfield. I've got like 50 ping; it should've loaded by now. Dude, wtf are you laughing for? Dude, wtf did all the bandits go?" It took him another week to find all the parts needed to fix a pickup truck that only needed a windshield, transmission, and one wheel, plus gas. I turned his bandit-obsessed crap server of jerks sucking Private Hive tit for weapons into scared, frightened survivalists in a super hardcore version of the game. I love DayZ. No video game could teach me social dynamics like DayZ. -
Making a game more expensive makes it more likely to get pirated! If I have $20, and a game I want costs $10, I'll buy it. If it costs $15, I'll buy it and probably eat off the dollar menu that night. If it's $20, I guess I'm not going to eat dinner. If it costs $30, I'm going to piratebay. *Hypothetically; the "I" used in the above scenario is a personal pronoun used only for convenience.

This thread blew up while I was off. I didn't "Follow" it and had no idea so many people responded... If I can, right now, make the OP more clear: I do not support online, multiplayer hacking for any reason, be it revenge, lolz, or to gain an unfair advantage over other players. I know the difference between a hacker and a cheater, thus I kept putting it in quotes; I figured people would understand the post better with calling the individuals in question a hacker. We had BattlEYE disable. It was off; BattlEYE didn't open/launch/scan anything or anyone. People with or without CD keys could join, as far as I know. No cheat protection, no connection to the official Banhammers of Banhalla. Once again, I don't support hacking. Who brought up the "Cod nub" thing? Playing Call of Duty doesn't make you become a prick or idiot; you're usually one beforehand. The video was up for about two months before the ban; there was no battlEYE connection. No one needs to be rude to anyone. We can all be friends here. Stay civil, people. Now if I may ask... None of us knew as to how JackFrags/FrankieOnPcIn1080p made their awesome video intros/outros. A lot of us trying googling it, found nothing, gave up, and decided to disable battlEYE on a private server. It was a closed, controlled environment, with as much influence on the rest of the world of DayZ as a fly's fart on the moon of a dying planet ten trillion AU away from Bettlegeuse 5 in the opposite direction from earth affecting the dietary habits of Sloths on the sun. But I guess the end-all be-all rule is, if you modify or play the game the way we don't like, regardless of when/where/how it happened, instaban? That's a little harsh, I think... I mean, that's like getting sued by Ford because you painted the interior of your Ford Fiesta blue instead of black or having your Driver's License revoked because of a stunt you pull in a skating park.

BattlEYE was disabled. The only reason BattlEYE had any connection to the events at all was in the case of the man who misunderstood and reported the video makers.

About half of the topics I start mention "OP" at one point, and it doesn't refer to "Over Powered." Are you trying to say "Original Post" and accuse me of illegitimate play, or...? I'm concerned. :)

Luck. All luck. The next 2 videos, some zombies climbed a ladder and threw me off a construction crane. >.>

How can people just run around town with rifles?
applejaxc replied to Wick94's topic in New Player Discussion
How I play: I equip my axe until I find a rifle with at least 2 magazines (hopefully around 60 bullets). When I have said ammo, I keep it on semi-auto and don't shoot unless it's a player; running away from zombies is OKAY; we all do it. All of us. Even me, Applejaxc, who got a headshot at 500 meters on a running bandit during a gunfight of 30+ players in the bandit-ridden town of Elektro while fighting the shakes of pain and a cold run away from zombies. :) For the most part, you shouldn't be killing zombies at all. If you're being chased, learn which buildings in the popular cities have an exit and entrance door, that are on opposite sides. If needed, play ArmA 2 on singleplayer/in the mission editor to explore Chernogorsk and Elektrovodsk. If a zombie chases you, run into a building and let the zombie slow to a crawl, then hide out the other door; they'll get bored, turn around, and go the other way... or they'll keep chasing you, but by the time they leave the building, you'll be far away. Avoid sprinting if you can. Taking the extra 10 minutes to crawl across a field is a good idea as long as there aren't any players around. If you absolutely need to, hit "X" to crouch and run in that stance (with shift, not double-tap W; DTW makes you stand up for a full sprint) Never be ashamed of what you do to survive, lad... Unless it's rape, cannibalism, or unjustified murder. -
Try 1K meters on a pilot going 100MPH in a UH. :)
-
Same here, although I don't kill people just because they have a CZ 550; they're pretty common for coastal noobs.

I'm not a risk taker in Cherno/Elektro/big cities in custom maps. Too many bad memories >.>

Is DayZ scary anymore? Sadly, like Dead Space 1 and 2 (3 was never scary), WaW Nazi Zombies, and many other games, DayZ has lost the chill factor, the fear factor. I no longer get the adrenaline rush of charging into Cherno and getting out with a survival knife like that makes me God. I've resorted to killing myself once a week/playing random private-hive servers to restart, but by the 7th death day, I've got NVGs, a Coyote Patrol Pack (is that the small-looking brown US one that is super awesome?), a hero skin, and a FN Fal, whether from raiding military loot areas or killing a**hole bandits. The first week of DayZ was an emotional roller coaster. I died probably once every day, for various reasons, for my first 3 weeks. Every second near the shore sounded like a car or a helicopter was coming to kill me. I was scared, alone, and afraid; I shot anything that moved, and paid dearly. But now I have learned, adapted, become experienced with A2 and DayZ. I don't for see DayZ SA bringing that fear, so central to the zombie-survival genre, bringing that back, and I feel like that might hurt its reputation among long time DayZ players, who will expect action and explosions and zombies and love and loss and rage and joy, who have already felt and ignored these feelings through DayZ mod gameplay. That doesn't mean I won't be purchasing DayZ SA, of course! I couldn't let all those a**hole bandits live, now could I? Maybe I'm just an idiot, and can't perceive a threat more obvious than a Hollywood "Jump Scare," but the reason I got around to thinking about this is because I recently picked Garry's Mod back up. We're talking a Half-Life 2-based, low-resolution game with very typical FPS controls and no penalty for death. But I downloaded/installed an addon called "Nightville," and THIS http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bKkQ7snKh6U scared me more than DayZ could today. Ask me a few months ago and I'd shudder at the name, "DayZ," or the mention of bandits. But now, I just laugh... Has American Hollywood and independent films (like the Blair Witch Project) ruined horror in general for the world over?

That's the rational I've been using. :)

I have a crazy bi-polar survival instinct that's more confusing than fifteen women on their period arguing about different shades of white. I'll do "Crazy Ivans" (a term that defines sudden, random, and unexpected moves to check behind you/your blind spots, started by General Ivan in submarine warfare because subs are extremely vulnerable to close attacks from directly behind) every two minutes or walk side-to-side when I'm thinking so I don't get shot as easily. I'll sit on a rooftop for five minutes if I hear footsteps. I don't approach cars or helicopters very often. But I always stop to check dead bodies, even if I know there's a bandit on the loose, or I'll chuck random flares to light up "Stealthy 1337 Bandit Ninjas" in the dead of night just to piss them off. I'll go running into a house full of zombies for a crowbar or can of beans when I don't need either. I roll off the tops of buildings when I should stay still. I sprint down stairs (and haven't broken my legs in a long time!). I'll go into *super obvious* sniping/hiding spots in Chero/Elektro and sit up there for the sake of being up there. I'll lead zombies into a dead-end alley to see how many I can kill. It's almost like I have an obsession with my own life, to the point of suicidal jealousy. I'd rather die than be killed... is that... weird?

Those are the people that don't play Skyrim because it has spiders in it (who are arguably the weakest/most laughable enemies in the whole game)

1: Jump scares are scarier when playing. Does a Slender video give you heebie-jeebies? Definitely not. But does playing with 3D turtle beaches in a dark room during a full moon? Kind of. Until you play daylight mode, like me. 2: I personally don't know that feeling of uber paranoia while sniping. I can't camp in DayZ. MY paranoia makes me too jittery. I don't stay in one spot more than 3 minutes after shooting.

Zombies aren't a threat to me at all in DayZ mod. You either run down hill and watch the Zombie Olympians attempt the 100 meter jump or run into a building with a ladder/2 doors and let them line up for headshots. *sigh* EARLY early on, before I had NVGs, zombies popping out of the darkness into a streetlamp made me crap bricks.

I asked why more launchers, not why the RPG. I don't have a problem with the RPG being implemented if it replaced the LAW. I'd make for a bad-ass anti-Bandit ambush. Imagine hiding on a roof of an industrial building in Cherno and making essentially a mortar shot on an incoming GAZ while 4 teammates run along the coast with AKs to clean up survivors.

Converting a cold-war era S12 is easier than cleaning a Glock... And I'm talking the crappy-made, shunt-missing, undrilled, full-block, jamming, crappy S12s that were originally made.

1: I think Sig Suar (?) pistols are very classy, thus their use in a lot of James Bond-esque movies, but I don't think they'd be a functional choice for post-apocalyptic hell. On that note, I think the Makarov is going to be a real b!tch to clean/take care of in the SA. 2: Why the SKS? That's certainly not a super rare weapon. Maybe when Russia learns headshots are more fatal, they started replacing their soldiers with marskmen? 3: M14 w/ ironsights would be fun. The M14, metal or wood, is one of the coolest looking rifles made :)
-
1: Most of the weapons you're suggesting haven't been used since WW2, and some were loans to Russia and are no longer used. I wouldn't suggest any of those. 2: Maybe gas masks against gas? 3: WHY LAUNCHERS? I wouldn't mind if the RPG replaced the LAW, but I don't want both :)

I think you're right... that's why I said if Rocket thinks :)

The bike helmets look like ridiculous pieces of plastic designed to absorb IMPACTS not BALLISTICS. I want to tell Rocket he's an idiot if he thinks a motorcycle helmet will make a difference to a 5.56 at normal assault rifle ranges. Dead is dead, helmet or not helmet. Now maybe vs. melee combat/zombies, a helmet would be nice... I remember when I was little and my dad and I took a HMMWV out into "The Box" of California. If the metal doors of a light-armored US military vehicle couldn't stop my .45ACP, a plastic helmet isn't going to do crap vs. anything smaller than a 9mm. (It MIGHT be able to stop .22 plinking rounds...) I really want to see a player ragdoll (but survive) wrecking his motorcycle, and when he stands up, there's blood splatter all over his helmet but he's okay (other than missing a few hundred blood). ONLY that could convince me to wear a helmet in DayZ. ---Maybe there could be helmets that don't allow NVGs (like motorcycle helmets) and helmets with them built in (like one of the scifi-looking Russian ones in A3)? The ragdolls really need to remain some muscle rigidity when they die; falling backwards and folding your legs doesn't make sense when you're shot in the back.

I want to see Gmod/TF2-style "Tags" you can apply to your gear/clothes to mark them arbitrarily as yours. Just think about what kind of story you could imagine when you killed a bandit and picked up a gun that had 5 notches, a skull-and-crossed-bones, a dragon, and Rainbowdash on it? The problem there, though, is EVERYONE but me would have a giant-ass penis on their gun/spray painted all over Cherno/on your dead body. (Can you imagine a gun with a giant penis on it shooting white tracers?) It was a good idea until I thought about how 99.9% of everyone online is a penis-loving homophobe... Also: What about being able to right-click your hoodie and choosing "Hood up" or "Hood down" ? It wouldn't have any game effect, really... but it'd help roleplaying. "Oh, it's raining. Hood up." "Oh, I'm sniping. Hood up." "Oh, there's a guy. Hood down."
-
That defines how I play almost exactly. Another reason to KoS is if the player being shot is an asshole, though they haven't done shooting. For example: I was in Namalsk one day walking around with a FAL, and I see this "Bush" on the floor with a Fal on his back. I assumed he was dead, so I approached to take his ammo. When no context menu option arose for looting, I realized he was playing dead. So I say: "Well, hello!" rather dis-engagingly, not wanting to kill this man. His immediate reply: "FUCK OFF YE BASTARD!" I know own 2 FALs.

Hold on, go back a step... UKRAINIA? It's the Ukraine. Second: My version of the DayZ story involves America trying to research/stop the Zombie disease from spreading and destroying the world, as it has done. Which allows for the M4 series, M16, and all the other American/"NATO" weapons in DayZ.
