Where do you think is the best hidden place to set a tent?
applejaxc replied to Absmoke's topic in New Player Discussion
That's not going to happen. If it's near a main city, some hilltop sniper will find it pretty quickly. Don't choose ANY locations marked on the map. No Green Mountains, no Kosovotop, nothing. Not even the little red radio towers. Choose some kind of landmark (like "That shrub of trees that looks like a smiley face on the map"). Don't put up barbed wire; everyone will see it. ATM, tents are just camoed enough to almost blend in; giant metal wires aren't going to help you hide it too well, or even protect it; toolkits are pretty common. Off the map in the north-east or north-west areas, where it isn't too mountainous. You can go slightly off map without an invisible wall/barrier stopping you. This stops "hax3rs" from seeing your camp on cheated maps. If it's relatively near the airfield but far enough to be off-map, no one is going to find it; who goes farther north than the NWAF? There's nothing up there of value, except one tiny town! I don't recommend doing this, because only douchebags do it, but you could theoretically run into the NWAF and back to stock up on gear. PLUS: No one hangs out at the NWAF after looting; thus we have "Loot runs." People are too paranoid to stick around for long on populous servers. -
Another DayZ Short Story: The Foreigners, Part 1
applejaxc replied to applejaxc's topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
Did you guess he was part of the AB prior to him saying it? And oh my god, yes. I would love to be a background writer for the SA. I'd do it for free, too... or maybe without being paid physical money, but a community badge and a free copy of the SA? ... You just gave me a beautiful idea. I'll get Part 2 done, then start outlining my SA storyboard. -
The ultimate "Zombie Survival Outfit"
applejaxc replied to applejaxc's topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
I wish I thought of the tactical pants and prybar. However, I'm not a big shotgun person. Slugs and shells are heavy, large, and inconvenient, and you're going to lose a fight vs someone with a rifle. Still, I guess a pump-action (was that a mossberg or Remington?) betas a K-bar/prybar any day. -
3rd Party Interaction, and why it ruins the game

Here's a cookie (hope that the DZ forum doesn't turn it into a smiley) (::) Edit: DZ forum turned it into a smiley.

Standalone - Gun Stores / Police Stations
applejaxc replied to djzombie's topic in DayZ Mod Suggestions
I haven't read anything about this. They're adding more buildings overall, with HUGE expansions on Chernogorsk and Elektrovdsk expanding west, so maybe new loot-friendly buildings will spawn? Although realistically, these places would be cherry picked already. -
can you have more then one version of Day z installed
applejaxc replied to meat pie's topic in DayZ Mod Troubleshooting
Well, the steam download version makes a DayZ file that doesn't run unless you choose "DayZ" on your steam game list. PWS I believe has the mod installed outside of your steam directory, and only runs it when you run DayZ. So yes, you can have them both, as long as you aren't putting anything in your "Addons" folder. -
Players get ability to restore power at houses and more.
applejaxc replied to edzus234's topic in DayZ Mod Suggestions
I know that electrical restoration is planned; I remember a debate on the dev blogs. I think it'd be fun, because at night, you could shut all the lights off, or only light up part of town to concentrate the zombies. Also, maybe flashing SOS signals? :) -
You got the hero skin... by raiding the NW airfield... something doesn't add up about that.

3rd Party Interaction, and why it ruins the game
applejaxc replied to applejaxc's topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
Taking out spawning = no one buys your game, first of all. Second, everyone has died for some dumbass reason before (glitchiness, extreme lag). Third, I'd like to see a mechanism where you weren't allowed to loot yourself/your old body, maybe. Maybe. I can see arguments for and against that idea, too. -

Thank you, Inception. -
That's inevitable in any communication feature. Think about how many people rage in side chat after dying, screaming death threats?

zekken's story of heli crash sites
applejaxc replied to Zekken's topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
You dialed down to 100m? I never go lower than 300; it's pretty accurate, even at near point-blank ranges and I hate losing an emergency shot because I'm on 100 and need to change to 400. In fact, I pretty much just change on 300... a lot of rifles don't allow dialing, like the CZ, so I don't mess with it. -
Food matters! [Food durability, nutrition value, and other effects]
applejaxc replied to Wep0n's topic in DayZ Mod Suggestions
You're challenging realism and balance. You said, "...candy bars thus should have a higher nutritional value" or something like that, aye? Well, I can see your point of "The rarer it is, the better it is," but "Nutritional value" would be a HUGE misnomer. If you wanted that system, you would have to call it something else. And calling it something else would make it a silly mechanic. As for durability and degradability: Cans are made to hold for as long as possible. Butchering animals should give you raw meat. After time, raw meat becomes inedible After cooking it, you have fresh meat. Fresh meat becomes old meat, which is worth less "N value" and has a higher chance of disease. Old meat becomes inedible. Canned goods/bottled water should last fairly long. Processed goods (AKA, candy bars) don't biodegrade correctly. In fact, most "Potato chip" companies can't legally call their thing a potato chip. I won't name any names, but I won't be eating anymore chips out of tubes. These foods are also bad for you. Basically, the longer the food lasts, the more it hurts you. IE, twinkies = death by lack of nutrition -
The ultimate "Zombie Survival Outfit"
applejaxc replied to applejaxc's topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
If DayZ was more realistic about what guns are and are not abundant in supply and ammo, the M4 models wouldn't be great choices; so far the game's assumed story doesn't say that there's American influence on stopping the disease (Although personally I think it'd be cool if American SpecOps had gone in to help, but after America itself succamb to [or saw its first outbreak of] the disease, it had to call all its men back for their own defence). But out of everything in DayZ, if ammo was in supply enough, I'd say the PM901 Bizon or MP5kSD; not too big, not too heavy, suppressed, automatic-capable. If this took place in America... Ruger 700 bolt action rifle, used by hunters, home-defenders, and the SWAT. Glock 17/M1911. The first one for abundance, the second one for power and reliability. K-Bar as my vs. human melee weapon -
I both look forward too and fear this game mechanic. "Yay, I finally killed that psychopath that's been murdering players on XXX server. Time to get his gear." 1 day later "Aaack!" *... has died*

I've heard this complaint. Did it occur after you lost blood? I have the problem where I can hear everything another player hears. If I'm 300 meters from a target and narrowly miss him, I hear the "zeeeeeeeeeeeeernow!" of the bullet whizzing past him and the plink-plink-plunk of it striking metal/concrete. If I shoot near another player, I hear his footsteps while my bullet passes by. It's like I have super ninja bullets.

3rd Party Interaction, and why it ruins the game
applejaxc replied to applejaxc's topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
When you're playing L4D, you are playing a cooperative arcade shooter. When you're playing ACM... you've wasted money, but regardless, it's a cooperative game. Killing Floor? Wave survival, another coop game. Those games already provide the means to communicate. Those games don't have a reason to disallow it. But don't you dare use those games to justify VOIP programs for DayZ; DayZ is not those games, is not played like those games, and is not about senseless killing. It is a game about survival, and the friendship bonds you form while surviving, not calling your friends and being douchebags via VOIP programs. -
3rd Party Interaction, and why it ruins the game
applejaxc replied to applejaxc's topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
:) I love all your posts. And that's what I've been saying since the day Private Hive servers went big; you can't tell the good ones from the bad ones, and no one wants to play in the good ones so the good ones can't afford to run and are shut down. There is no skill in using 3rd party programs, you daft noob! -
I know acquired immune deficiency syndrome is sexually transmitted, but the idea remains: Can I spread cholera by these dead notes?

3rd Party Interaction, and why it ruins the game
applejaxc replied to applejaxc's topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
One change being that these 3rd party metagame cheats be disallowed. Just saying. But yes, whoever originally posted the idea for "Blind servers" is genius. You don't know if you're alone or not. I think that game-wide, every chat function but direct should be removed (it doesn't make sense to have any of them), with the exception of radio-chat. All "...has been killed" messages should be removed. You shouldn't be able to look at a city and go, "Look, a zombie. There's a player in the firestation." No, you shouldn't know you're in trouble until you're balls deep... or upper-thighs deep if you're a woman. -
3rd Party Interaction, and why it ruins the game
applejaxc replied to applejaxc's topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
I don't consider it a tactic, and I'm not saying A2 needs to change their TOS. A2 has WAY too much respect for its community to change its terms of service without a Hell-on-earth Jesus-reincarnate Godzilla-attack level reason. I'm saying that when the alpha is launched for SA, there TS3 ought to be brow beat off the forums and off the community's collective PC. -
I love people like you; I can't be bothered to hunt down dev posts :) So here's the question: What if I make a piece of paper that says: Helicopter Coordinates X, Y, Z Car Coords, X, Y, Z Et cetera, X, Y, Z Then I sneeze on it. So the player goes running across the map to find my "Gear" but all he gets is AIDS?
-
In real life, if you aren't being chased, I can see you searching for a scrap of paper... But I forsee players wasting ammo trying to shoot the things open. But yeah! What if military loot locations had lockers in lock up, instead of sniper rifles all over the floor? Y'know, like real life? And you have to go to a certain part of the base to unlock/get the key? What if not turning the power on/off made an alarm go off? I'd rather see keys, though, I think. One of the most fun things to me in DayZ is when you're looting a dead player, guessing where all his gear came from. "Oh, he probably got this in the firestation right before I shot him. Oh, he must have got this from that other player earlier. Oh," et cetera. Imagine finding a key on a dead body, and running through houses all over town looking for where the key goes? If they were small enough/convenient enough, I'd have like 5 keys on me at all times, so when I'm killed, the player is like, "Fuck..." You could essentially "Troll" by dying in Cherno when all your keys open train station lockers in Stary Sobor. The item in your inventory would just say "Key," and you'd have to scroll through them to test each key on each thing you want to open. FURTHERMORE, what if these safes could be "saved," just like tents and cars? This would promote teamwork city-clearing and strict discipline as to who carries the key under what situations. Imagine you're running from a firefight-gone-bad with your three best friends. You get to the top of the hill. At the base, your friend Mike dies. He has the key to your vault. Your vault has all your food and ammo in it. Do you abandon him/all the awesome stuff in your vault, or turn around and fight like hell?
