    Night time In Dayz SA and your thoughts?

    Yep, nights are very quite in Chernarus =) Without source of light you are not able to see a damn thing, but it's ok when you have no light pollution around and when you position is somewhere in middle latitudes. I beleive most of players don't play on night time servers as if they'll activate some source of light they'll become easy targets. And it's hard to spot loot at night time, even with light on because lighting is working strange inside buildings.
  3. Actually, this has been discussed several times. And it is probably a subject to change I beleive. I'll just leave a part of an old post here: Let’s take a look at basal metabolic rate. According to Harris-Benedict equation we’ll need approx. 1800 kcal a day for a 75 kg 175 cm 30 years old male. We’ll need to make it double if he’s having heavy physical activity. So, let’s pretend that we need 5000 kcal for our survivor a day with all this stress and running and fighting zombies. He’s sleeping, let’s say, 8 hours a day and is spending approx. 600 kcal while sleeping (summer, +18-23 DegC at night, for example) and is spending approx. 275 kcal/hour while awake. Our man has approx. 70000 kcal of inner reserves that can be spent without any serious harm so we can last for days without food, so enough with hunger – nothing interesting here. But we have to mention that we’ll lose blood when starving. Probably it’s not a very good mechanic. Let’s take a look at thirst. In, practically, worst scenario, our survivor will be losing probably no more than 20 gr. of water a minute. That makes 1.2 L per hour. Our man has roughly 50 L of water in his body. He’ll lose 1.2% in half an hour and will feel thirsty with his mouth dry. He’ll lose 2.4% in one hour and will feel sleepy with his reaction times lowered, skin red at some places and body temperature slightly increased. He’ll loose 7.2% in three hours and will have dyspnea, head ache, no salivation and pricking in arms/legs. And only no less than in 6 hours he can die due to thirst. Worst scenario, lots of physical activity and stress, sweating like our survivor is in hell. But again, as with hunger, we’ll lose blood if dehydrated. And at which level dehydration starts is unknown, but according to status messages you can be dehydrated even in half an hour. That is not correct I believe.

    How to not be killed on sight

    Some usefull advices in this thread actually =) I can add some - one of the most visible moments is when you cross the road, try not to cross roads more than necessary in urban areas. Streets are usually straight and you are seen from a good distance. Stick to the back yards. Take a moments to stand still while indoors and you have your back covered by wall. You'll rest and will have no heavy breathing blocking your hearing so you can listen to surroundings. I beleive more 1/3 of kills is when killer is following target and target just not listening to its surrounding. Not listening is like cutting 50% off perception for me. In urban areas you can always check street from second floor windows - practically no one ever is looking at them. Dangerous moments is when you enter or when you leave the building. Check corners first. Probably there are other advices, can't remember.

    Rare food? Think again. About history - name this examples please, i'm sure you can find endless examples of surviving as a group or as community as well. Let's pretend - zombie apocalypse. 95% of population is dead. Stores and storages in cities are full with canned food and cereals which are meant to be sufficient for the whole population. Same with med supplies. And goverment long storage facilities. The problem is not rarity but how to take that stocks, and it's not easy to take it alone. Hungry people are desperate, not agrressive. Oh, and yes - survival instinct tells you to seek safety, not to run around and expose your body to deadly threats. You'll be a bandit, ok, good for you. A lone bandit trying to kill everyone on sight. You probably will last so very long.

Not so fast right there. 1) I beleive zombies should be able to catch you and food should much harder to find - now it's too easy. 2) Other players always will be a threat. 3) I don't need PvE experience, but let's face it - DayZ sucks as a deathmatch game. 4) Don't know... I usually kill other people if they pose a threat to me or if I need to kill them. No hugs from me. 5) IIRC Rocket don't like DayZ turning into deathmatch and, therefore, he even comes with gear damage mechanics and other. What a surprise! 6) Not me - I can die to hackers but very rare to other players. I usually try to make "clean" kills if I have to. 7) That's what I do. KoS players usually die a lot. I am surviving, KoS mentality players are usually lie rotting.
  7. Kill on sight is a problem. DayZ is not a deathmatch game and KoS is breaking immersion - no one will just shoot for no reason in a zombie apocalypse - it lowers yours chances of survival as you'll draw unneeded attention of zombies, you may be attacked by yours victims friends, you will waste ammunition etc etc. But banditry and killing on purpose is absolutely OK. About you proposals: "Ways to identify a player, by looking at his face up close" I beleive is absolutely OK and is quite reasonable. "A message showing you the name of who killed you" I beleive is not good. You see what you see so no magic knowledge about your killer for you. "HARD TANGIBLE INCENTIVE" - can you make some examples?
  8. Wow, such anger. Let's see... yes, learning curve is higher and that is ok. Survival does not include killing because a) dead body can't do any job for you b) can't became your friend and watch your back c) requires some unneeded risk and expenditure of ammunition d) can draw unneeded attention e) lots of other factors . Rest of the post is unrelated and is a poor attempt to provoke me. Have fun, whine less.
  9. KoS is a part of call-of-duty-deathmacth gameplay and is brought to DayZ by cod-kiddies. Extreme survival situation is not about running around gunning everyone. Not trying to offend but that's true.
  10. Current zombies has "work in progress" state if I remember correctly. But, actually, we are talking about an idea that game should take mental state of survivor in account regarding his approach to grouping/not grouping with other survivors.
  11. It is a real life stuff, it is a real life survival factor. Implementing and balancing it is another story and should be made by specially designated people - we can think out some basic rules, but implementation is completely in developers hands. We are just talking about conception, about idea here. And the idea is a correct one - loneliness has considerable influence on you physical and mental state. Hardcore survival game must take proper account of such factors.

  13. Idea just needs correct mechanics behind it. Like when you are not alone you have an "anti-fear", "anti-depression" and "not-losing-sanity" modifiers. Because, let's face it, everyone are iron willed lonewolves in game only while everything is good IRL.
  14. Take a look at depression for example, as loneliness can directly lead to it - thought disorder, movement dormancy, fatigue. Not bad for just a "mood"? That can be easely used in DayZ. Fear and loneliness are very important factors in survival.
  15. A lone human in extreme conditions is more affected by emotional stress. Usually lone survivor has fastly developing reactive psycological conditions, quite often this survivor will get into major depression. In a long isolation people can have auditory and visual hallucinations. So, basically, you really need someone to stay sane. Especially in a zombie apocalypse. Saying "I need no one" is good... while you have a lot of people around you.
  16. I beleive those numbers are not very correct, as our characters have lot's of physical activity, but, anyway, thirst mechanic requires too much water atm. Our daily water needs are around 2.5 L per day, only approx. 1 L from that is received by drinking water. But that is values for convenient climate, weather and normal activity. Ok, let's pretend we need around 2.5 L of water received only by drinking - that'll be 8 soda cans a day, let's even double that - 16 hours of activity and 16 soda cans. I had two game sessions - first one was 2 hours and second one was 1 hour. Water needs to keep status messages away were like can of soda every 10-15 min and that will be even more than 1.2 L per hour. It can't be true when I spend half of time jogging around, 30% of time resting or standing still and only 5% of time fighting or sprinting. Edit: A survivor needs around 20 L of water consumed during one day via drinking? Really?

It’s not so easy to translate fear to numbers but it can lead to depression or panic or neurasthenia or it can influence our survivor in other ways so it’s important. Probably, at the moment, it has no impact on our survivor. So no numbers here and let’s move on. Let’s take a look at fatigue. This one is, probably, our party breaker, to be precise – I believe that overfatigue is the thing leading to unconscious state. It can be caused by physical activity, poor nutrition, fear and a bunch of other factors. I believe we have some conditions that lead to overfatigue and then to unconsciousness, probably it’s mix of energy balance(negative in our case, we receive less calories than we spend), blood level(less blood more fatigue), health level(same as blood) and exhaustion from physical activity(I believe some exponential function). So, it all is added to each other with some coefficients and if it reaches some value we just go to unconscious state. The funny thing is that even in unconscious state our survivor is still can be losing blood due hunger or thirst and he’ll be losing calories as well. Of course our exhaustion will slowly decrease but other factors (hunger, thirst and, maybe, blood and health loss) will be increasing while we are lying on ground in unconscious state. And that can lead to unending unconsciousness. Probably this mechanic is not correct and should be changed. But we don’t know how it exactly works. Let’s take a look at cold/heat. Serious factors when surviving, both can lead to death in different ways. I believe, those two are presented by adding some values to energy/water consumption. I think I remember something was said about sun strike somewhere but not sure. Anyway, probably, just modifying consumption rates so nothing interesting I believe. Let’s take a look at diseases. They are not implemented yet I beleive. And the last one – loneliness or, in other case, communication with other survivors. Probably has no any impact on character state mechanics. If someone has better numbers or some corrections/ideas – post it, maybe that’ll help devs to improve DayZ. TL;DR and conclusion. We have a non player-friendly game here, so, for example, let’s make all numbers x2 against players. But, I believe, we have to stick to some sort of realism and realistic dynamics. So it’s probably a good idea to change/adjust some mechanics.

    FR6 nuke

    * Server this happened on - FR6 * Time that it happened including your timezone - around 00:15 and 01:15(both pretty innacurate) UTC/GMT +4. * What happened during the incident - practically everyone(or everyone - can't confirm) got killed by something like nuke. At first incident some tank spawns were reported by other players on server. So, first time i've noticed nothing suspicious, just some script kiddie, but on second time - player SuspectedInfected connected then everyone nuked then SuspectedInfected disconnected and after that everything remained normal till 3:15 UTC/GMT +4. I don't want to make some accusations but I ask admins of FR6 to read the logs and look if this person connected both times when mass deaths and other shit occured.

Safe logout (while standing and not moving for example) with a timer seems to be a little bit better imo - you are not chased by zombies, not in a firefight so go offline in 5-10 sec(I beleive you can't stand for 10 sec in a firefight or if chased by zombies without big problems afterwards). Or if it's not a safe logout then yes - leave some sort of a ghost for a period of time.
  20. Saiga(lots of different models) or Vepr Molot maybe? I think it fits good because both of guns are made in Russia and, therefore, it is not strange that they are found in Chernarus. Although some of modifications of this guns are too AK-like looking, that will confuse many players.
