I stole from an admin...bad me!
[email protected] replied to Vertisce's topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
I'd say you're pretty safe, I imagine the Day Z team would have something to say about it if an admin tried to ban you or punish you in any other way when he was the one who left himself out in the open. All fair game. -
I know boxes like that spawn at heli crashes (and not all the time, ie there's a percentage chance), so I guess it's possible they could spawn at barracks' too. They tend to either have STANAG mags, or DMR and SVD mags (from what I've seen).

Hi guys, Not sure if this was a bug or not, so thought I'd post here first before submitting it if it was. Walked into an apartment building, announcing myself as I went in (I find the footsteps announce you anyway, so may as well give people a heads up--I'm not a bandit, so feel less guilty shooting them in the face if they stay quiet). Got halfway up the stairs to a dude with an AK-74 facing the other way. Aiming at him, the heartbeat went crazy, so opened up on his back and he died. Problem is I got a murder instead of a bandit kill. His dead body still made the heartbeat going crazy sound (though not AS crazy as I've heard before). So can the heartbeat sound when someone isn't classified as a bandit? I was under the impression it only happens when looking at someone with negative humanity.
-
So if it's to do with them not having bandit 'status' (even though under the old skin system, anything under 2000 was bandit, you had 2500 to start and one kill would usually put it into the negative), when does the heartbeat start? I'm not TOO fussed about my humanity dropping, as we are only testers after all and any really serious playing should really be left for something more stable like a beta. It still is just annoying though.
-
If either of those is the case, there's no point in having a humanity system whatsoever. With the first, it means the "I'M A BANDIT" sign stays with you even though you're not a bandit at all, meaning people who are trying to stop banditry are going to become bandits themselves (I guess somewhat poetic? But flawed). I'm not sure about the second one--one of my friends stalked and killed two bandits (who we saw mow down a survivor), and got 2 bandit kills for it. It was a good 10-15 minutes after they'd shot the poor guy, and they hadn't shot anything since. But if it is the case, it's just as retarded. Surely it should be heartbeat=bandit, or no heartbeat at all.

Sorry to the Church Folk
[email protected] replied to William_Munny's topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
Just by the way, I've found that sometimes people can't hear you/you can't hear them or even both. Type if they don't respond, but obviously not if it's gonna get you killed. -
I'm done with not being friendly
[email protected] replied to VLG Castiel's topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
I'm glad we have a new convert! While I really do understand the multitude of reasons people shoot on sight, there's so much more to gain from helping people. I honestly believe that nearly all of those 90% that shoot on sight are doing so simply because they got shot on sight and decide "that's it, I'm killing everybody"--simply increasing their numbers. I've had to beg my friends not do turn into this, otherwise we literally just become one of them. The best feeling I've had in the game so far was when me and a friend set up the "Chernagorsk City Justice Force", and helped three new players get set up and armed in Chernogorsk in their first couple of days of play. We were set up on the top of the gas refinery in that interior section, and when they finally stepped off the last rung of the ladder, me saluting and saying "you're safe now", the gratitude we recieved was easily worth the risk of leading three noobs through a city full of zombies and bandits. It was a bit of a shame that a bunch of bandits (the clan TFB, or The Bastards--never trust these guys, ever) thought it would be funny to shoot them off the roof about 10 minutes later. We also saved lone survivors from hordes of zombies by shooting them from the town hall roof, and attempted to avenge the deaths of others. I proudly say I've never shot someone without a huge reason to do so, and while it can be a lot harder, what's the point of surviving if you've lost your humanity? May as well be a zombie. -
Just another confirmation, but for me it was a bush. Crouch-running down the hill overlooking NE airfield trying to get a better position to cover my friend, and literally the second I pressed Z to go prone next to a bush (while running, may have been part of it - did that dive-prone though) I was knocked unconscious for a minute or so, bleeding with a broken leg. I assumed a bandit had got me, but then realised I hadn't heard a shot, or seen or heard a bullet impact either. Pretty much confirmed it wasn't a bandit when I had time to sit up, bandage and morphine, then stay prone next to that bush without dying.

Wire fenced Cherno in ANZ1
[email protected] replied to RIGHTLY's topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
They are persistant through restarts. Toolboxes are spawning and aren't really that rare, just check industrial spawns. And while they're probably cheated, wire fencing kits are hardly rare - if somebody decided they wanted to either troll the city it wouldn't exactly be hard to gather a lot of them. It could even be a clan trying to defend the place--I know I've considered it as a possibility for setting up a city 'base' (though not sure how it would work with server hopping etc.). They will have to sort SOMETHING out with them, because spamming them is way too easy now. -
Hi guys, While I do enjoy the atmosphere that the lack of side or global channel creates (the oppressive sense of complete loneliness and disconnection--most of the time you'd never know there were 49 other people in the server with you), I think it really needs to stay, especially while the game is in the Alpha testing stage. There's just too many times that some kind of bug (or what appears to be a bug) comes up, and it's kinda necessary to be able to discuss it with the players in the server first. To find out if it is indeed something that other people are experiencing, or something that you're missing or doing wrong or whatever. This makes the testing experience a hell of a lot less frustrating than having to make your way to the forums to find out how to do something, or whether something is a bug that needs fixing. Just a thought.

Also, it's absoultely awful at long ranges. I've only tried sniping more bandits from ranges or 400-600 metres, and it's next to impossible to land a shot (or, if I'm landing shots, it's really weak at that range). Even ranged more or less correctly, the bullet spread and drop is pretty huge.
-
Definition of BUG OUT intransitive verb 1 : to retreat during a military action; especially : to flee in panic 2 : to depart especially in a hurry Not that it was particularly panicked, but we didn't want to kill the poor bastard for doing nothing more than being near a heli crash (there were actually 2 on either side of the road--I swear in this one area of Chernarus the zombies have EMP technology), but at the same time knew there was about a 95% chance he'd try to kill us for the same reason. _________________________________________________________________________________________________________ Edit: Just went bandit hunting over Elektro with it. It's so ridiculously overpowered for spotting people, but it's visibility range isn't giant, especially on thermal. I did make a group of three bandits (who had just mowed down a survivor carrying a flare with their M4s) all disconnect while my bullets landed on and around them. It's really difficult to see the bullet impacts on thermal, so rangefinding is difficult. Doesn't help when you have about 2 seconds to kill them before they disappear, the bastards.

I just found one today, so I'm fairly certain they're meant to spawn there. Lying next to the crashed chopper just like the FN FAL and the Mk 2 Mod 0 next to it, with 2 STANAG rounds. Moments later is saved me and my friend's lives as I noticed zombies had spawned at a shed a little while away, then I picked up a bright red glowing ghillie suit heading our way, so we bugged out.

The player Greed I believe killed me (Vladimir [Col.Gen-CCJF]) in ANZ8, at around 1:25pm Sydney time on the 22nd of June. No video or screenshot proof as it happened way too fast, but he more or less admitted to it in side chat. Not sure if you can check chat logs or not. Immediately prior to dying, he yelled "FIRE! Czech backpack in the school" (balls0fire was his friend who he was addressing). I was wearing a Czech Pack. I stopped walking (was on the top floor inside the Elektro school) to ask which school, and as I finished typing I instantly died - no gunshot, no blood, just broken leg and shock icon, heard myself fall over then death screen. I mentioned this in chat due to my obvious surprise (i was standing away from the ledge, only possible place I could have been shot from was the hospital roof through the windows which I checked seconds before). Greed then replied with "Hey vlad >:)", an when I asked how I died (or something along these lines) he said "I was invisible". When I said I was going to report him for it, he changed his story saying he only had a flashlight, and thought I was already dead when he saw the pack (even though I was walking), then saw me fall over and he didn't know how. He later said 'for all you know I had a silenced weapon', which is also pretty damning. May have worked it he hadn't already said he was invisible next to me, also apparently without a weapon. He was then asking how to fix his invisible bug. At the absolute least, he is guilty of exploiting his invisibility to scout for items for his friends without being spotted. At worst he was killing people while invisible to take their stuff. There is nothing to suggest he wouldn't do something like this again, given another bug. As we all know, he should have resolved a game breaking issue like that before exploiting it for gain. He was also a bit of an asrsehole. Thanks guys.
-
No idea what was up when I wrote that, it's one of the most incoherent pieces of crap I've seen n a while. But yes, basically he was invisible killing people. Just wanted to report what was said too as it was the most damning evidence I had. I've seen the guy since and he's fixed the bug as far as I know, but probably only after I mentioned he could be permabanned.

Passing out every time i log in
[email protected] replied to Travis (DayZ)'s topic in DayZ Mod Troubleshooting
It happened to me once when I logged out for about 10 minutes on the top leve of a Berezino apartment building, no zombies, no players. I did die about 15 minutes later to a bandit though. Bastards. -
PvP balance/punishment suggestion
[email protected] replied to babyrats's topic in DayZ Mod Suggestions
I've always thought some kind of insanity (perhaps not quite as dramatic as you suggest, especially the laughing/screaming) would be a pretty good option. Or at least some kind of mental illness effects, not necessarily insanity, because clearly people who enjoy murdering people for the sake of it (in a game where murder means a hell of a lot more than in something like GTA) have some issues going on. -
I'm not sure I necessarily agree with using side chat as a tool for communication within the game (after all, that's pretty damn unrealistic), though in saying that it's probably not a terrible thing to have in that regard until they introduce some kind of 2-way radio system, which I'm sure they will. Or until they allow you to 'yell' or something, or at least make direct not the equivalent of wispering at someone 10 metres away from you. As for the bug reporting stuff, what you're missing here Zoop is that this is an alpha test for a game. You're not actually playing it to enjoy yourself (though that often comes with it, which is why this mod is so popular), you're playing it to test new features and make sure everything's working. Usually alpha testing isn't done publicly, and the alpha testers are all in contact with each other to discuss what's going on. As for examples, there's tonnes. There's new players (testers) coming on, having little idea what to do (even after reading the guides, which become outdated on a weekly basis), and they can hardly adequately test the game without knowing the basic functionality of it. But if you subscribe to 'noobs are noobs and should figure it out themselves' (which is very narcisistic), it also applies to new stuff coming out in all the patches. If you think it's conducive to a good alpha test to have to jump on the forums when you first come across a hatchet and can't pick it up because you don't know it takes up a primary weapon slot now instead of a slot on your toolbelt (as of the last patch at least), then you're wrong. Similar with patches which introduced massive FPS hits--is it your computer, or the patch? You either have to jump out of the game, log into the forums and see if somebody's posted about it, or you can open up side chat and say 'Is anybody else getting horrible FPS?' and everybody will say yes, or no if it's on your end for whatever reason. Basically, these examples are endless, and that's more or less all I ever used side chat for after I got the beta which made direct chat more or less reliable. As I said, in a final version (or even a beta) you're not going to want to have a side chat, because that ruins the atmosphere that the game is trying to create. But for now, it's very condusive to alpha testing. It's not exactly something that needs to be 'tested', disabling side is always going to work.

Consequences for killing players/playerbodies attract zeds
[email protected] replied to EnermaX's topic in DayZ Mod Suggestions
It's a new idea as a solution for it (as far as I've read). And, in my opinion, it will require some kind of solution at some point. Otherwise the playerbase will start to dwindle significantly due to sheer frustration. I know after I get killed for no reason while sneaking along with a bunch of good shit, I don't feel like playing for a while. I do believe in the whole ultra-realism thing, but I'm not sure I believe that mass murderers would go 'unpunished' (mentally or otherwise) in a real life situation like this. Either that or I have an overly naive comprehension of humanity, in which case it's a miracle that we've managed to create civilisations and inhabit a relatively stable world. Basically, if you're gonna go with realism, there have to be factors that take into account the people who say 'hey, it's just a game, anything goes' and ditch all their moral codes. That's the part that isn't realistic. -
Suggestions to solve the biggest issues
[email protected] replied to super pretendo's topic in DayZ Mod Suggestions
I suppose that it's good that you at least admit you're a bad person, but there's still no need for you to express your clearly narcissistic, sociopathic mental state in the way you are doing here. Why are you even angey enough to be so a abusive over defending your right to play a game to fulfil your dreams of non-consequential murder? Abuse does nobody any good. I could go on to refute most of what you've said, but I long ago learnt that arguing with crazy people is rarely worth it. So I'll just say that you should consider being a reasonable, civil person, or just keep it to yourself. Queue the obnoxious 'I can do what I like, I don't care about anything but what I think' response. -
Suggestions to solve the biggest issues
[email protected] replied to super pretendo's topic in DayZ Mod Suggestions
I think you guys are talking about different kinds of bandits. Pretendo I believe refers to the kind that don't play the game as zombie survival, and more of 'let's kill the guys trying to play zombie survival because it's easy and funny'. I saw a guy on a server the other day on top of the Chernagorsk town hall throwing flares out all over the place, and shooting anybody that showed up in them with his CZ. THAT is what is bad, not bandits killing other people for their gear or to secure their safety or whatever (no matter how dickish that is, I can at least see it happening). I don't get people that shoot others literally for the sake of it and wasting ammo. Though at the same time, when I see someone running through the streets holding a flare, and then stop in the middle of a square to loot the 5 bodies there, I really feel like shooting them just to teach them a lesson in common sense. But yeah, this has all been said to death and unless someone comes up with an ingenious solution, we can probably give it a rest as I imagine Rocket and the team are doing their best to find a solution that is reasonable to everybody. Also Thesryn, just so you know, you're a bit of a cock. And by a bit I mean a lot. -
Please overhaul Inventory and Item Management, its atrocious
[email protected] replied to EhJay's topic in DayZ Mod Suggestions
Unfortunately it's also how Arma II works. So that's with Bohemia, not with Rocket. Not sure much, if anything, can be done about it. -
If you've been playing since the first Arma game, you would well know that the Radio (in the way it's presented by the OP, as the little walkie-talkie thing) is a standard item on soldier units. So it does exist, and you can take it from things or give yours away. While it's clearly not overt 'proof', your 'proof' that it's fake is straight up wrong.

Suggestions to solve the biggest issues
[email protected] replied to super pretendo's topic in DayZ Mod Suggestions
I agree in principle with pretendo, but I'm really not sure how it can be applied to a computer game. That's the main difference, and what causes the huge bandit problems that occur, is that killing someone in a game is something you don't even think about. Whereas in real life you would (very, very hopefully) think twice about killing someone for the sake of it. Or even to survive, without even asking for help or something first. Maybe the problem will be a long way towards being solved by just fixing direct chat (which I understand is being worked on). As is, communication between you and a guy around the corner is ridiculously difficult if direct voice isn't working, which means that 90% of the time it's way easier to shoot someone incase they shoot you. If you do decide to try and communicate first, it's lost in the sea of side chat and you become infinitely more vulnerable simply by opening the text box. Further, it's a hell of a lot easier to type 'friendly' and be lying than to convince someone by voice. I've personally been in situations where I've desperately needed some kind of supply (usually painkillers), and seen someone. Easiest and by far safest solution at this stage in the game would be to shoot him and hope he has them (as my friends on Skype were urging me to do), but in the end I risked using the chat system to ask if he has any and would help me. He did, which made my friends reconsider and agree that it was probably better I didn't shoot him (except for one of them, but he's a dickhead). So if I could have just asked him easily over direct, while keeping my gun on him, and gotten a response there would have been a lot less risk involved. Sorry this is so long... apparently I'd rather be writing essays on how vital communication is to humanity, than one on what issues TV journalists are facing in 2012 (due tomorrow!). -
Reading what the message ended up being just made me incredibly and inexplicably sad.
