Suggestion :Stop asking about Standalone Release
Penny Sue replied to Derpy_Hooves (DayZ)'s topic in DayZ Mod Suggestions
Hey Derpy do you know when SA will be released? IM SO EXCITED *SQUEEEEE* Never-mind I'll just go start a new topic! -
You can't stop the log jam from leaving brown town!

To effectively simulate in-game the fact that IRL you need training and experience to fly a helicopter they should make it very hard to operate a chopper in game. Flying in DayZ should not be effectively possible with only a keyboard and mouse. Require the use of nice joysticks to be able to fly in DayZ. Then only those players that not only spend the money to buy this equipment but must also spend the time in-game to learn how to fly will be the only ones that can use helicopters. This makes the heli much more rare because even if you fix one not many people will be able to fly it.

Combat loggers now get replaced with bots!
Penny Sue replied to Azrail (DayZ)'s topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
Finally! That's awesome. It was silly you could just chill in your vehicle totally safe. -
Absolutely not! They should be persistent when you log out. Guess what will happen when you do something like making secure storage? I know because it's happened on every other game. Eventually everyone has all the stuff they could ever need or want. Nobody needs to help or rely on one-another. The server databases get full of junk nobody even uses anymore. High-end gear becomes more and more common because anyone can hoard it so everyone does. People rage quit when they do actually loose their stuff somehow because they got so attached to it under the false pretense that it was somehow totally secure. Actually I wouldn't mind if they figured out a clever yet interesting way for your avatar to stay persistent! If I had the tools and options to hide my character very well yet not be 100% safe I would TOTALLY love that. As it stands right now you don't have these capabilities built into the game. Alas too many people would shit themselves and punch their monitor if they logged in with the message "You were murdered in your sleep.... should find a better hiding spot next time!" and all their precious little pixels were gone.

Some solid advice in this thread if you truly want to try to avoid detection. Personally I'm less worried about it anymore. Only time I really care is if I know other players are in the area and I don't want to draw much attention to myself. In those cases it's less about zombies and more about staying off the other players' radars. I've also noticed crouch-walking really close to buildings and walls can help a lot. For example if you crouch-walk hugging the wall of a building you'll USUALLY see your indicators telling you you're very quiet and hard to see. Then take a few steps out onto that sidewalk or into the street.... indicators shoot way up and you are a lightning rod for zeds! This doesn't ALWAYS work though; pay attention to your Eye and Ear indicators to get a good sense of how noticeable you are. Only time I go prone is if I have to sneak really close to some zeds or cross a road. Seems like roads are the worst; they make you really loud and really visible. Even crouching across them sucks. Again this is only if I care about other players in the area. Eventually you'll learn how to just sprint through town, loose the zeds near your target, loot some stuff, and GTFO. Ultimately it's more efficient but... the game looses much of it's immersion and luster once you start doing this. This is because you learn how to avoid zombies so easily they are almost no threat anymore =( Here's some things that REALLY draw zeds attention: - Roads! Stay the fuck off them. - Firing loud weapons! Things like Lee Enfields, FN FALs, double-barrels, and other loud guns. - Standing up! Stay the fuck down dude. Only time you stand up is to sprint and GTFO or quickly loose some zeds.

Ya there's already like 100 threads about this...

Better hidden Tents
Penny Sue replied to scottyhead100@googlemail.com's topic in DayZ Mod Suggestions
This is neat and all but also keep in mind that if everyone has an easy way to secure / hide equipment we'll all have caches of equipment and effectively render the game pointless. Only way I'd support this is if your stash disappeared when you died. I like that your stuff is easily stolen. Keeps people motivated to get out there and play the game. -
Next time you have one on your character, switch to sidearm, go to 3rd person view, zoom out hitting - on num-pad.... it's funny seeing that monster hardware strapped to the side of your dudes pack like it's nothing =)
-
Try them out and make your own decision =^.^= Some say Panthera is awesome... I thought it was boring. Some say Namalsk is lame... I think it's a blast and a different set of challenges. Only you will know which map you like best!
-
Overall I agree and like where you're going with this! Some context around how you arrive where you are would be really cool. Even just spawning in different locations would be nice. Why does it always have to be on the coast? Perhaps you wake up in a building in some random town. Love your sinking boat idea! Maybe you spawn inside a wrecked car, chopper, or laying next to a wrecked motorcycle. What about spawning in a hospital bed? T'would be cool if you woke up in a shallow grave, couple of fresh dead bodies with shovels near by and zeds gnawing their brains! I'd like to "spawn", look around, and think.... "Damn, how the hell did I get here? This is weird... what happened? OH SHIT WHATS THAT?!" *RUN*
-
Perhaps what you seek is a non-KOS server? There's still PvP but you have to make contact first thus giving everyone a fighting chance... instead of getting sniped by A-hole McGeez in a ghille hiding in brush hundreds of meters away. I like DayZ RP http://www.dayzrp.com/index.php

Starving to death needs to be COMPLETELY overhauled.
Penny Sue replied to JimJam (DayZ)'s topic in New Player Discussion
Hey JimJam maybe you should read up on how the damn game works before you decide it's broke? You died from ignorance not faulty coding. It's pretty easy to kill animals and render them into usable food once you know how. Frankly it's rarely even necessary as finding cans of food is stupid easy (unless your playing Namalsk map). I usually find so much food and pop I just leave it laying around... I don't need more than 3 cans of anything because before that runs out I'll find a bunch more. -
Whats so entertaining about this mod?
Penny Sue replied to Tomeusz's topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
I was on a server today with Side Chat and player death broadcasting enabled. Two guys randomly teamed up. They did all their communicating over side chan. They took out 7 guys; some of whom were also working together. You don't have to be in some big, fully geared, clan to compete.... just gotta be able to sneak around and aim well. Find a vehicle is a lot of fun; you should try that. I made it a personal objective of mine to find a vehicle, fix it, get some loot stocked in it, and hide it well. This has provided many hours of enjoyable gaming. I've lost several vehicles, found others, hid them well for a day or so, lost them again, found more, explored a lot of the map I'd never seen, found some of my first chopper crashes.... it's really been a whole new aspect of the game. That's what sandbox gaming is all about. We have these tools at our disposal. We have the freedom to do as we please. I chose to go fix up cars, drive them around, give people rides, find better loot, etc. etc. I made my own objectives and ultimately made my own fun experience. I didn't need some quest system, standard mission objectives, or other hard-coded features to lead me around by the nose in order to have fun. I hope the SA brings more things like this into the game world! -
Yeah I hope they polish this off in the SA. I should honestly be able to sling a rifle over my shoulder and pull a side arm while running. Having to stop is pretty lame.

Please don't implement passing stool
Penny Sue replied to Warp Theory's topic in DayZ Mod Suggestions
Can we please be realistic on making the game realistic? There's a line here somewhere, not sure where, but I know having to micro manage poop/pee is over it. You can have sickness in the game without actually forcing the player to go poop, puke, or pee somewhere. Something as easy / simple as a health synopsis about your character. It could list things like how often you've been eliminating, if you're puking, or other symptoms. Pretty sure what he means is that it's silly how often you have to eat / drink in the game and if poop'n is going to be the same it's gonna suck. You can eat 3 times a day and be quite content. You can drink 5 times a day and be fine. But in the game I have to drink an entire canteen like ever 30 minutes and eat about every hour. So what he's saying is if he has to shit every hour in the game it's going to be really annoying. I tend to agree. -
Forget the choppers. People would be firing these things at players, into buildings they knew players were, at vehicles, and anything else that would cause maximum grief. I love how dudes think they can just look at some pictures or even read some instructions and know how to use these things. Yeah you'll figure out how to point it and fire it. That's a FAR cry from operating it with out harming yourself, those around you, hitting a moving target, or even hitting a stationary target. It's already so sad how any idiot can pick up these highly sophisticated long range, high caliber, weapons and shoot them like it's a BB gun with a scope on it. Now we should throw in rocket launchers? NO Enough with the elite military weapons laying all over and stupid easy to use!
-
Love it! It MUST attract zombies though. Like... as bad as firing an FN FAL.
-
It would be fun to flip the bird to social norms and taboos... but you'd have to deal with the consequences. Like would Valve let you release it on Steam? Would you get a bunch of bad press over it and negatively impact sales? Is this product completely disassociated from BI? If not then would this hurt that relationship? It's easy to say "We don't care what anyone thinks; we are making a game WE want to make even if nobody buys it!" which some indie game dev teams do say. Ultimately nobody wants their hard spent time and effort to be a waste and they would like SOME compensation for their work. So they too have to walk the line even if they say they don't have to. =P
-
Pretty neat hardware there. I too would like to see more setting appropriate firearms and less US or western European weapons. T'would be really cool if rifles spawned without any scopes or other add-ons. You'd have to find the scope, flashlight, and other add-ons.

Day Z should be a constant battle for the resources you need, not a constant battle for something to do.
Penny Sue replied to Silent331's topic in DayZ Mod Suggestions
While some PvP because they can and it's fun.... others do it because it's really the only thing left to do. I agree; we should have more stuff to do besides shooting at each other. I'd like to have the tools to create things to do (read: sandbox gaming). Minecraft is a great example... they gave you tools and building blocks... now YOU go figure out what you want to do. I don't want a quest; I want the tools to build a mission other people can do. I don't want a "home base"... I want the tools and resources to build a base that my friends and I dream up. I don't want to find a vehicle... I want the tools and resources to build a vehicle or fix up existing ones. ' We need tools, resources, and freedom to create and enjoy DayZ as we the players see fit. -
Feedback on status of infectious diseases in DayZ
Penny Sue replied to rocket's topic in DayZ Mod Suggestions
I was thinking a little bit about this too... how about a synopsis every time you log in or every day? I mean we don't actually do a lot of the natural things people have to do nor can we actually experience all of them; like pain as you point out. So when you log in you get a quick synopsis of how your character is feeling since you last logged in. Something like... - You've only peed once in the last 24 hours. - Noticed your urine was darker with a red hue. - Coughing sometimes produces a nasty tasting junk! - There's a persistent, burning, pain in your chest and abdomen. You'd read this and have to decide... am I sick or just dehydrated? If I'm sick than what is it? What kind of medicine should I seek? Maybe you're both dehydrated AND sick? Drink a bunch of liquids and drink more regularly. Then your synopsis changes... - You've urinated 5 times in the last 24 hours. - The urine looked relatively normal. - Coughing sometimes produces a nasty tasting junk! - There's a persistent, burning, pain in your chest and abdomen. Hmmm... looks like you were dehydrated AND sick with some respiratory infection... Thankfully you're now hydrated but... still sick. -
Feedback on status of infectious diseases in DayZ

Here's a simple way to look at poisons and diseases I use in table top gaming. Pathogens: Virus Bacteria Fungus Supernatural Delivery Method: Contact (inhale, engulf, spit, etc) Injury (bite, sting, slash, pierce, inject, etc) Ingested / Digested (ate, drank, forced ingestion, etc) Effects Damage Ability Drain Unconsciousness -
To me one of the most important pillars of a sandbox game is freedom. Freewill and choice given to players where very little is dictated or hard-coded to limit freedom. Other games have tried this but so far all of them eventually caved in and went down the road of limiting freedom. Will the developers of DayZ do the same? If they do not then how will they deal with the constant, and large volume, of complaining about those who use their freedom to negatively impact other players? Will they try to encourage some semblance of balance between positive and negative interactions and choices? If they do HOW will they do that while minimizing limitations on freedom? It's really difficult to stem the rampant death match mentality in online games. Ultimately there are no permanent consequences of your actions. So what if you shoot someone and take their stuff? They just respawn on the beach. Who cares if they shoot back at me and I die? I just respawn on the beach. Who cares if I have a bandit or hero skin? Even if I didn't people would still shoot me on sight... and I respawn on the beach. Looking back on Ultima Online it was rather similar in it's approach when first released. The game was based largely on freedom and sandbox gaming. Players were free to lie, cheat, steal, and murder their fellow players with very little consequence. People quickly learned it was actually easier to just kill other players to get what they needed and wanted. Soon PvP and killing on sight was rampant. Most players were murderers and thieves. A lot of people did stand up to them and became anti-PK players; some out for justice and others just wanted more PvP. When you died all your loot was on your corpse and anyone could take it. People could steal right out of your backpack and even those who weren't murderers or normally wouldn't steal from a live player flocked to corpses like flies and picked them clean; ultimately there was no consequence for doing so why wouldn't they? Of course players whined and complained incessantly about this. Eventually the developers capitulated and started implementing consequences and systems to squelch the rampant PK'ing. Months and years go by with more and more strict consequences and systems. They did little to turn murderers into good little boys and girls but rather those players just stopped playing as it became harder and harder for them to be murderers. They had NO interest in playing nice with others. There is a very significant amount of people who game like this; PvP is the only real challenge to them and no mater what you make for PvE content they take zero interest in. Some PvP purely for sport and the challenge, some do it to grief you, others do it because they are lazy so it's easier to just steal your shit than get it themselves. Don't get me wrong; I'm not passing judgement on their play style. I'm just explaining that there are a lot of people who enjoy this style of game play. A lot of what the UO devs tried to do was put justice in the hands of the players. If an anti-PK could kill a PK then the consequences would be applied to the murderer. So then you saw more murderers grouping together. There was safety in numbers because if you didn't die you could ultimately circumvent most of the consequences. The whining continued and the devs kept reacting. Eventually they split the entire game world into two. One was this utopia where nobody was allowed to do anything harmful to another player. The other was a wonderland of freedom where these fiat consequences did not apply. Do I have to tell you where the vast majority of people flocked to? (Hint: They did not embrace freedom...) I wonder if the grand developers of DayZ will remain steadfast when the tides of tears roll in about rampant "KoS" or even just PvP / PK'ing? Or will we have a short lived, epic, experience of true open and free gaming that will eventually be swallowed hole by good intentions? Right now it's pretty easy to just say "QQ and go find more loot, it only takes 5 min". Here's a significant difference in UO but a lot of people are asking for it in DayZ: fortifications and things that take a lot of work to obtain or build. In UO you could buy large and small houses, place them in the game world, and it was YOURS. There were no instances... it was right there in the game world for all to see and lust for. Inside was all of your precious loot you had spent hours, days, weeks, and years accumulating. The one day someone sneaks in or kills you and steals your key... they steal all your stuff... in moments years of work was gone. People will loose their fucking minds and rage on the forums all day and all night when this happens in DayZ. THAT'S when it gets hard for the developers to hold fast and say "QQ and go find more loot, we aren't changing a damn thing..." When some clan looses a fort they spent weeks building. People will QUIT when this happens. They will punch their monitor, throw their keyboard across the room, and never log in again. How then will the devs respond? Will they cave in? No doubt they will say to us now "Oh, don't worry, we won't capitulate..." The time to worry is when pressure starts boiling over from the community, sales / subscriptions start to drop due to people quitting, they bad-mouth the game to potential new customers, and the developers start saying things like "Well all this rampant murdering doesn't really fit the vision we have for this game." I guess this is largely rehtorical... again it's easy for people to say right now they won't give in. It's much harder when thousands of players are complaining day & night.... and when you have stakeholders pressuring you with stats of declining revenue.... we'll find out in the coming months and years. It will be an epic journey with many grand adventures along the way but we won't know until we look back and analyze how it went. Good luck and I beg you choose freedom!

See if he can buy a physical CD / DVD of ArmA 2. Then you can copy the DayZ mod onto physical media (flash drive, external HDD, DVD, whatevs) and send that to him. Still he'll be waiting days for things to ship.... so not really saving any time =P
