Nope; any way you cut it you gotta pay for some version of ArmA 2. Just start saving some cash now for the stand alone of DayZ. By the time it comes out you'll be able to buy it.

Crowbar, useful in scavenging parts from wrecked vehicles.
Penny Sue replied to dirtylemur's topic in DayZ Mod Suggestions
This would be a far more appropriate use of the crowbar. To scavenge (usable!) parts from vehicles you need a bunch of tools. Usually when I resort to the crowbar while working on cars I break something =P I love the premise of the idea; scavenge parts from other vehicles to fix up another one. I just think you should use a tool kit instead of a crowbar. -
[DayZ SA] Will DayZ remain a sandbox game forever?
Penny Sue replied to Penny Sue's topic in DayZ Mod Suggestions
Glad to see people talking about this; it's quite interesting to read some other perspectives here. You really are a witless fucking retard aren't you? Obviously didn't read a damn thing I wrote, which is fine, but don't reply with some insult that doesn't even apply to what I said. THANK YOU! Maybe I wasn't overtly clear on my personal stance with PvP. It's a wonderful thing and should remain a very important part of DayZ SA. A great many people love the competition and challenge. Even many of those who don't enjoy PvP love that it's there because it adds more risk, realism, and depth to the game experience. I highlighted something that struck me there. I'm really glad I got into this game before it goes stand alone and (hopefully!) mainstream. This truly could be one of those rare games that only comes around every decade or so and you'll look back years from now while talking to your friends and say "OHHH man remember when DayZ first came out?!" It could be one of those iconic games where decades from now people ask if you played it 'back in the day'. What I am worried about is years from now we could be saying "It was SOOOO awesome back then!" but it changed for the worse due to all the crybabies. -
hah, true... true... Mass Cure? =^.^=

Considering getting this. But have questions holding me back..
Penny Sue replied to Excelsior24's topic in New Player Discussion
If you got like $30 you don't mind wasting for some entertainment just get ArmA 2 and play the DayZ mod. I say 'wasting' because you'll be buying the standalone game in a few months; not that ArmA 2 or DayZ mod is a waste. It's truly a game style the world has only seen a few times with the likes of Ultima Online and Darkfall. What I mean is a game where the developers are not afraid of placing total freedom in the hands of the players and letting THEM decide what kind of game world they will play in. It's so rare to get any sort of non-linear, sandbox, game ... DayZ delivers and is on the road to great success. Can't afford wasting $30? Wait for the stand alone game. They totally re-engineered the server to client relationship which will eliminate 99% of the hackers / cheaters. Right now way too much of the game is processed locally and shared amongst the clients and server. The same problem Diablo had back in the day and any game that has this architecture. Leaves the game wide open to even the most novice "hacker". I've only ran into three cheaters / hackers the whole time I've played. Here's how to avoid them - Public Hive: Play on low population servers. If you start seeing people, especially the same people, getting kicked by Battle Eye then just leave the server... hackers abound. Go join another one. Hackers are, at their core, griefers and want to grief as many people as possible so they are attracted to higher population servers. They are also inherently lazy thus they rarely put forth effort to join private servers. I've known several of hackers over my life... my generalization is pretty spot on =) - Private Hive: Find some servers managed by good admins (like Planet DayZ and DayZ RP), that have a password, and / or a "whitelist" (which means only those accepted on the list can join the server). For example Planet DayZ runs an extra anti-cheater program, their admins actively look for cheaters both in and out of game, and they have a password. This means that random noob "hackers" won't just join the server... they have to actually put forth effort to go get the password which instantly weeds out most of these knuckle heads. Then if they do actually join and try to cheat the software will usually catch them. Even if they circumvent that the admins will find out about them and ban them. Plus the community is tighter and does not tolerate these tools so they will instantly rat out anyone they find cheating. Playing on private hives I've never encountered a cheater. I'm not saying it never happens it's just so rare and dealt with so quickly that it's a very small chance of it actually effecting you. -
Also note... my new profile wouldn't take hold unless it was clicked on and hilighted when I exited the game! This really frustrated me for a couple days.

Any industrial building is pretty good. I find car parts ALL the time in buildings near the piers. The big machine sheds, the small sheds, the large buildings with the cat-walk along the outside wall, and the multi-level industrial buildings are all GREAT places for car parts. Run along the coast till you see some peirs. Get just close enough for zombies to spawn which also means loot is spawning. Wait for a good opportunity (like when the zeds disperse away from the buildings). Then just run up to them and start looting! Not near the coast? Seek out the nearest town with industrial buildings. Execute the same procedure. Try to get a jerry can or two as well. You'll need it to refuel later.

Pretty soon you'll have it figured out to where it takes about 5 or 10 minutes to get acceptable gear. For now enjoy the thrill and mystery! Read up on some of the very well written and comprehensive Tips & Tricks.

Some good advice in here. I'll keep mine short.... don't give up on people. Yeah, 9 out of 10 times you're gonna die. Frankly that's DayZ. Tired of loosing your gear? Get used to it. That ONE time out of 10 can be the most awesome experience you've had in DayZ yet... totally worth it in my book. Some of the best times I've had were those rare people who say they are friendly, actually are friendly, and we go on an awesome adventure.
-
People gotta sleep SOME time! Just like leaving your car or tent... roll the dice man! Or get organized and have real people doing real patrols following real shifts. Want to protect your awesome stuff? Get some ppl together from different time zones to keep an eye on it most of the day & night.

Oh, no, he really is that stupid. I'd wager at least three times more stupid than he tries to portray himself. Dude has obviously never owned a BB gun or a bow. I mention these because the BB and arrows actually move slow enough to where you can witness these physics in action. You also have to leverage this knowledge to be more accurate at even relatively short distances. Kids these days... I guess they don't grow up with guns anymore... and look what we end up with?

Sounds like a typical Big Government program to me. The War on Drugs The War on Poverty The War on Zeds luuuulz

The ONLY Realistic Way to Prevent Deathmatching: Make DayZ a Living Hell
Penny Sue replied to Time Glitch's topic in DayZ Mod Suggestions
I'm all for making the game more difficult. Right now it's not hard at all. Once you realize zombies are virtually zero threat it becomes very easy to "survive". Finding loot... even good loot... isn't difficult. Just making the game harder isn't going to squelch killing people on sight. As some have indicated it may actually get worse. This would be because your loot is now much more valuable. As it stands now there really isn't that much to do beyond PvP. The only real challenge in the game is fighting other people. We need more options, more tools, and more freedom. Give us more stuff to do but better yet give us more tools so WE can generate things to do. We need more challenges to try and overcome beyond killing each other. PvP should remain a big part of this game but right now it's like the only thing to do. -
All great advice above. I would ask not to use online maps yet. Learn the game and the map first. You should be able to spawn on the coast and find Elektro or Cherno with out ANY map! Online or in-game.... you should learn the coast very well. Learn to use the in-game map as you find them. There are a lot of subtle land marks both on the map and in the game you should really learn well. That way it won't matter where you spawn on the map you can just take off running to get where you need to go. I usually find maps in supermarkets, churches, and apartment buildings. Same place you'll typically find matches and a watch with the rare compass. These buildings are nice little treasure troves; seek them out as soon as you spawn! Sounds like you are running off into the woods with out a map and no real idea of where you are going. Bad idea. For now stick to the coast and run to one of the big cities along the coast. Once you get near one just run into town, find any high-value building and loot it! Zombies? Pshh... nut up son... just run into the building, grab some shit real quick, and GTFO. Snipers or other players? Cowboy up and go for it... you got nothing to loose anyway so who cares if you die? Fire house Supermarket Church Apartment building Hospital You hit a couple of those in a single town and you should have almost everything you need. Absolute essentials: With these essential items you could theoretically survive in the woods indefinitely. It's actually really boring but you are now "surviving". Weapon & Ammo: Beggars can't be choosers, grab the first one you find. Hatchets work just fine! Markovs suck but it's better than nothing. .45 revolver and M1911 are actually an acceptable weapon; OK damage and not extremely loud. Tools: Hatchet, knife, matches (you now have what you need to kill animals, gut them for meet, make a fire, and cook a bunch of food!) Drinks: Canteen / water bottle. Yes you can survive on pop but you can refill canteens from lakes, ponds, and water pumps. Great for surviving in the woods. Try to find two because sometimes it's a long run between water sources. Food: Get a can or two in your pack; you're set for a while. Important Items: With these items you could not only survive but also start adventuring out into the rest of the map. You have the tools and supplies to get more food and drink as needed. With the in-game map you can now start navigating around more easily. Time to start going after better gear and find a vehicle! Tools: Map, toolbox, compass Drink: Pop is nice to have for those long runs between canteen refills. Bandages: You start with a couple so that should get you by for a long time. Ideally you won't be using them very often. I carry between 3 to 5 with 2 or 3 in my mediate inventory and maybe a couple in the backpack. Big Gun: While those pistols are nice you'll want something with more kick and maybe some cool features! Whole huge debate on what gun to get but again something is better than nothing. So get something and upgrade when you can. Anything not yet listed I would classify as "Nice to Have". Yep; that even includes medical supplies! Some would argue these are absolutely necessary or at least very important. They have their reasons; I won't debate them. They are more important if you are all about PvP and especially squad vs. squad PvP. In these cases you will be using medical supplies much more often and will mean the difference between wining and loosing. If you are more of a scavenger and rarely PvP then they are less important. I'm more of a scavenger / survivor and if I'm in a situation where I may need medical supplies (other than bandages) I'm prolly gonna die anyway. I typically run around with an EPI pen, morphine, and blood bags.... and I've rarely used them. It's more often I just end up dead =P

Choices, choices. What guns to use?
Penny Sue replied to David375's topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
If you do want night vision I would recommend NOT getting FN FAL AN/PVS-4 NV. I've had a couple and it's really a waste. It's useless during the day if you play on servers with out cross hairs. At night you only get night vision through the scope so you are still bumbling around in the dark. Getting separate night vision goggles would be far more useful. Also the FN FAL is so fucking loud. Zombies and players com running from miles around! Also the recoil is insane. Would much rather have: L85A2 with AWS. M4A1 CCO (SD version does same damage) M4A3 CCO These rifles have nice optical gear, do significant damage, aren't crazy loud, and have low recoil. With some NVG you'd be much better off than the FN FAL AN/PVS-4 NV. -
Recommended? It's the only way to go IMHO. Pl@net DayZ is based in Sweden, active, and a great bunch of people. DayZRP seems to be very active! I'm in the process of getting whitelisted on there so no real experience yet. fpdayz is a fun server but not very popular. 112 vehicles so it's kind of a different gaming experience... more like Grand Theft Zombie =) Spend some time here: http://dayzmod.com/forum/index.php?/forum/64-private-hive-discussion/ Read players feed back. Go look up the stats on them... timezones, player activity, etc. You'll find some good places no doubt.

What is you favourite Dayz video youtube maker
Penny Sue replied to Candylol's topic in New Player Discussion
DaSquirrelNuts aka Squirrel makes some good stuff. Production value is great; high res, well edited, music is nice and used with tact. Calm, cool, collected seems to describe their group; especially Squirrel. -
Big fan of DayZ Commander as well. Not only can you save favorites or tell which servers you played on recently but you can also make notes about servers! I do this all the time to mark terrible servers so I know not to ever go back on them. Also annotate good servers that I may like but not well enough to put on my Favorites. You can also make some notes about what you had on you, where you logged out, location of a tent or vehicle you hid. This has helped a lot bouncing between private hives where everything is totally separate. On one server I may have hid a couple of vehicles and noted where I stashed them. On a different server I logged out in a very bad spot so I made a note to remember "Hey you logged out in the fire house in Cherno, be careful!" About doors... No, pretty sure they have no response to opening and closing doors. I do it all the time RIGHT by them and they don't care one bit. If one is pursuing you outside and you run in then close the door... don't think that will stop them! They will still come right in =P However they can only walk inside buildings so it will slow them down enough to get a good shot or simply loose them as you run out the back. Also a great way to break Line of Sight on zeds chasing you. About crawling and noise. Yes you sound noisy but the ear indicator tells you that you're being quiet. So zombies really do have a very hard time hearing you while crawling even though you sound loud over your speakers. Crawling is a great way to get across streets where you'd be very visible and loud while crouching. I don't crawl around much as it's so slow and hard to react quickly but it's nice to use in some cases. Usually just walk around crouched and stay close to buildings, walls, and other large things that block line of sight. You'll notice as you walk along a lot of buildings and walls your visibility and noise levels are MUCH lower than if you were out in the open or even a couple meters away from a building / wall. This is VERY useful in dense urban areas with lots of zeds. They can be just a few meters away and totally unaware of you because they don't have LoS and can't hear you. You can even follow rather close to a zed if you stay behind him and walk along that building / wall! Don't feel too bad about starting over... it's going to happen... a lot. I know it sucks when you loose some nice gear but just take a deep breath, get over it, and start your new adventure. Sometimes it's almost relieving to start over as there's no pressure to not loose your gear. You can now just sprint into town and grab some stuff because you got nothing to loose!

I bound a key to use mic over Direct Communication channel ONLY and found it to be VERY useful. You can do it under options and controls then edit the keyboard hot keys. This is because you don't have to use " . " to switch to the right channel and THEN use your mic to talk.... you just hit the key and bah-bam you are talking over Direct Comm. Plus you never accidentally use voice over Side Chat / Command Chat which is forbidden on like every server that uses those comm channels. Also you don't keep cycling CAPS LOCK on and off which gets damn annoying. Terrible idea to make a default hot key bound to caps lock.

Opinions on letting people go
Penny Sue replied to unkillable94's topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
Sounds fun to me! I actually wouldn't mind being left somewhere even without a gun. Just drop me off with something to drink and I'll figure out the rest. A new adventure begins! Dropping me off somewhere I would die of starvation / dehydration before I found anything would be really lame. Other than that I'm cool with it. -
How about... instead of trying to limit every other 3rd party VOIP app... DayZ always broadcasts what is being said over any microphone into direct comm? This way if you were talking over Skype it would also be picked up by DayZ and broadcast over Direct Comm channel in game. There's no need to figure out every VOIP app people use and somehow limit it. Should include any input interface that's receiving a signal so people don't try to 'cheat' and use a different microphone for Vent vs. DayZ. This would include USB devices as well! I'm sure there are negative consequences for my idea so please bring them up and discuss them! Thanks

I wouldn't mind 3rd person if it wasn't able to allow people to see over, around, or through things they otherwise shouldn't be able to. If that's not possible then 1st person only. Personally I wouldn't mind being forced into 1st person. However I would really like 3rd person while operating vehicles as there is so much blocking your field of view inside a vehicle. That being said you still run into the challenges I mentioned above. My biggest complaint about 1st person view (and this isn't a DayZ / ArmA exclusive problem) is the lack of peripheral vision. The 3rd person view does help simulate that. Also it helps while being prone. I can't hit a key to push up with my arms, extend my neck, and try to look over tall grass... so going to 3rd person view again kind of simulates that. Yes I know about peripheral dots and that's a neat trick but it's not peripheral vision. It's telling you there's something in your peripheral vision that you can't actually see because you have no real peripheral vision in the game.
