Rough town. So many macho commandos on leave walking over from the military base. Don't they know it is a school night?

Item Conditions: Which Actually Matter?
somethingbloody replied to Tabris07's topic in General Discussion
Not 100% sure, but my experience with the dud .357 suggests it might be the same for all weapons. It might also explain the occasional innacuracy with "pristine" M4's and the offset people have reported with Mosins. -
M4 in your hands and Mosin on your back, or visa versa?
somethingbloody replied to medium00rare's topic in General Discussion
Fuck it. Too much fiddling. I carry a Mosin, .357 and a 45. If they make the M4 receivers a component I might keep it in my pack for a friend or a freshie who seems trustworthy enough. Actually, that would be quite good. Offer a freshie an M4, drop it on the ground as components. Tell him you will shoot him if he draws it. -
Item Conditions: Which Actually Matter?

So does anyone have the skinny on whether the Mosin, .357, FNX45 or M4 (receiver) actually have damage states or not? The descriptions are just blank. -
Hell yes. I like the idea of a balance choice between bows and crossbows. Crossbows are heavier, more powerful, fire near-instantly, reload slowly and maybe have less deviation. Bows are lighter, quicker to reload but slower to fire, and maybe have a bit more variation and less range. If they implement a more comprehensive holster/lanyard(sling) system, the bow could be placed over the shoulder, while the crossbow would need a sling or take up a "weapon slot".

Item Conditions: Which Actually Matter?

I held a guy up with a .357 once, and afterwards we made him fistfight a zombie and then escorted him around and showed him Rify and the NE-airfield. A few hours later I tried to fire the .357 and it just puffed smoke and didn't fire. I got a good laugh out of that. I bluffed so well even I believed it, I guess. -
It's really a non-issue about "why?". There are many plausible explanations. They are brain-fried. Maybe one saw a bird moving and thought it might be food so he went for a walk and some other zombies saw him set off and thought he might be looking for food and followed him lemming style. The most compelling part of the horde idea is that it breaks up the travelling routes and make your time out of towns more exciting and dangerous. You want to make a bee-line for a loot spot but a roaming horde is passing. You either have to wait and hide, hoping they don't see you, or try another approach. Maybe you're observing a town or airbase from a treeline and zombies start moving through the trees, causing you to change your position. It provides more variety, tension and interesting experiences to the game, and it isn't implausible, so it should be in. It is consistent with Rocket's vision and something he is working towards. There is no compelling reason not to do it as long as it is technologically feasible. I really hope they can make it work.

Night time servers--- THE BEST SERVERS
somethingbloody replied to Space Milk's topic in General Discussion
We were checking out the new settlements west of the NW strip and decided take our chances and run to the strip to check out tent city. As we were running we noticed that the colour had gotten really vibrant and nice. I looked and noticed that the sun was behind us, and realised that the sun was in the west, actually setting. It just kept getting prettier from there. The clouds were pink as we prepared to go into tent city. Once night actually started to fall, everything turned grainy monochrome and and it looked awful. I used my head torch that I had been saving for this occasion and the angle is a bit off, it points below where you are looking. I was really excited to play during night-time and the extra tension was nice, but the lighting engine is pretty rubbish for it. I really hope that the guys who did Arma 3's night lighting get on board. -
Haven't experienced it yet. You say this is more important than fixing server issues, but this is a server issue. Also, please search for threads. There is an identical one right her on the first page of general. If you don't find a thread regarding the same issue, please title your thread with something more informative.

Should we be able to carry two rifles?
somethingbloody replied to Rōnin Rick's topic in General Discussion
Maybe. It needs a balancing factor. One would be introducing weight and encumbrance. Either this would cause subtle changes to your running/sprinting speed and/or cause fatigue and heavy breathing and weapon sway faster. This would make carrying gear a trade off between being a slow pack mule or a light weight fast mover. Also, I don't know about stuffing an M4 in your backpack, but I hope that they make the M4 receiver a component, so you could disassemble an M4 and put it in your bag, but you would need a bit of time to put it all together if you wanted to use it. I also think your backpack contents in game should be automatically minimized, and expanding it causes you to unshoulder the bag to access the contents. If this was implemented I would have no problem with it. Hopefully these features are added. It shouldn't be a matter of just hitting the other weapon in the hot-bar and switching play styles on the fly. -
I'm curious, do you guys ever actually post on the bug-tracker?
-
With the current accuracy of the M4? I reckon they'll have similar engagement ranges. The shotgun might actually be easier for wounding at range depending on the spread. I imagine a one hit kill with one would have to be in close range and land most of the shot in the head and chest. If you can put the sawn off in a chest holster that would be pretty bad-arse.

Non-permadeath server option in the future?
somethingbloody replied to minime1000's topic in Suggestions
So, what are you asking for exactly? You have a mosin with a long range scope and a hundred rounds, a tactical vest, hunting backpack, TTsKO clothing, canteens, compass, food, med-kit, etc. Then you get shot, and you respawn on the coast with all that gear except for the bullets and supplies you used in the fight? What happens to your body? Does it still have all that gear? Is the gear damaged from the firefight? Does this mean your friend can just shoot you in the face and duplicate all your gear? Will everyone just be fully geared all the time? Do you even spawn on the coast or is there a death timer before you wake up again? There are so many incompatibilities with the DayZ gameplay. People are going to rage at you, but I'm just wondering if you've really considered what you mean? -
Me and a buddy were talking about this while running through a forest on our way somewhere. I was talking about hunting game, and how they could make it pretty exciting with realistic hitboxes and behaviour. A deer for example has a fairly small brain, so going for a headshot is not as easy as with a human being. A good hunter aims for the heart, generally just behind the front leg (I think), and if you hit it, it will run for a few seconds and fall to the ground dead. If you miss the heart a deer can run very far, sometimes kilometers before the adrenaline runs out and it finally succumbs to it's wounds. If they incorporated that into DayZ hunting it would reward accuracy and real world knowledge, and missing a vital area would mean tracking a bleeding deer cross country to earn your meat. Hope you're not starving. We also talked about wolves, and how terrifying it would be if you were moving through a forest and a pack was actually tracking you, waiting for an opportunity to attack. Especially at night if you could see the shine of their eyes. STALKER had a fantastic system for mutant wildlife AI. They would move in groups, hunt and fight eachother, get wounded and run away. The AI system was called A-Life if I recall, a fairly complex system for animal (and bandit, stalker and soldier) AI spawning and behaviour. An animal like a dog would make a decision whether to attack you or not based on factors such as "Am I hungry?" "are you armed?" "are you wounded?" "have you fired your gun?" "Do we outnumber you?" "Are you looking in my direction". That sort of system for DayZ wildlife would be incredible when mixed with DayZ's complex systems. You could be in a forest, with a pack of wolves tracking you from a far, you get wounded and bleed, and they would become bolder and move closer. Then your friends arrive and bandage you up and keep overwatch and the wolves are outnumbered and they back off again.

Why buy the standalone ??
somethingbloody replied to africanhungergames's topic in General Discussion
The A3 engine is designed for large scale military gameplay, organised squads, etc. It has features to promote this like squads, comm channels, a giant map, military gear and more. A mod for it has to work within the systems provided. Survival elements are clumsy and hatcheted in. DayZ SA is a similar engine, but being redesigned for a much more consistent and detailed simulation of survival. They can tailor the UI and gameplay to provide this in a more focused and efficient way. Unnecessary and immersion-breaking elements of the mil-sim have been stripped out. The online experience is being tailored and refined. The inventory in it's current state already supports more detailed information and a smooth crafting system. The lead dev, Rocket, has survival experience and a particular vision of the kind of game (or "anti-game") he wants this to be. The Chernarus terrain from Arma 2 and the DayZ mod is being redesigned and worked on constantly to provide the right atmosphere for an apocalypse. There are more reasons, but the main one is that it is only going to get better from here on out. If it is the kind of game you want, then buy it now for cheap if you can handle the bugs and lacking features, but it and keep it in your steam until you hear something has been added that you like, or don't buy it and make a decision at a later date. Over the next two years you'll probably be hearing more about this game as it goes through different development stages so you'll have a chance to make an informed decision. I like Arma 3, but honestly it is much better suited for what it is designed to do. If you can find an Invade and Annex server with a good community of mods/transport pilots you will see what I mean. -
How do you protect yourself against betrayal?
somethingbloody replied to jimmyjoerocks's topic in General Discussion
If you speak to them and they don't reply but come towards you. Fuck no. Either warn them to stay back or shoot them. You have half a second to decide. Other people will disagree here, but whoever has the gun pointed first is in control. I have had people at gunpoint, and I ensure my safety and let them know they can get out of this alive if they stay cool. It is not like a movie where two people will have a stand-off with guns pointed and sort it out. That sort of tension is going to explode at any moment. If you are at gunpoint and you get a sense they are going to torment you. Don't pull your gun out, they will kill you before you have a chance to point it. If you can, run for cover before getting your gun out. It is strange, there is actually a lot of body language to be observed in Dayz, as limited as it is. As an example, if you hold some-one else up from a hidden position and tell them not to move, and they use their headlook and stay silent, they are probably trying to find you to turn on you. If you are holding some-one up and trying to avoid killing them, be careful with your tone. Be firm, but don't act like a massive bad-ass. Don't laugh at them like they are a play thing. Mutual respect is an important thing to establish. And then again, there is always the chance that a fuckwit is going to use this kind of playbook to fuck with you. It's all dangerous and exciting. -

The arma engine does support that, but not with a keyboard as far as I know. You can use rudder pedals (used for driving games/heli sims) to do gradual leans, or you can set a TrackIR to follow your head as you lean. -
Name weapons that should be in DayZ SA
somethingbloody replied to Grenadier36's topic in General Discussion
A fairly rare lever action in .357 would be nice. Who needs a TV in a zombie apocalypse? And an incredibly rare modern model with rails for mounting acessories. They can be chambered in a shitload of calibers, though. .44 included. -
I do enjoy both, but I avoid PVP in 3PP servers. Funnily enough, the 3PP helps me do that. I won't use it to kill people because it feels cheap, and I've been killed by it when I should have had the advantage. I was exploring the hangars, and a friend told me two guys were approaching. I didn't have time to get back into the prison/barracks where he was, so I stayed inside by the door. I switched to first person to aim my M4 at the doorway, rather than 3PP exploiting to see them coming. I hear the footsteps getting closer, and closer, until he's on the other side of the doorway. I was perfectly still and not out of breath so he couldn't have heard me. The footsteps stop for a moment and then the two guys enter, one sprinting past to draw my fire and the other rounding the corner with his M4 raised, pre-firing at me. I autofired into both of them before I died. My friend came to check if they were dead too, they had logged to avoid death. So he waited for them to reappear and shot them. Interesting that the same guys who used 3PP for an advantage they didn't deserve also logged.

Yeah, they need to reposition the eyes a little higher. It would be crap to be hiding behind a wall and get domed because your proprioception is way off. The stance adjust system is a definite must-have. The sitting position is great for seeing over grass but still keeping a low profile, and the raised-standing would be useful for firing from the top of a building. Not to mention getting the right angle to shoot out a window. That system would make first person much more engaging and tactical. -
The very first kill. Do you remember yours?
somethingbloody replied to skoms's topic in General Discussion
I just remembered, the guy I beat to death for being rude wasn't my first kill. When I got the SA, my first life I was lost. I went inland because I had heard that survivors will likely kill you, and I wanted to explore an unfamiliar landscape. I passed through forests and towns, grabbing food, finding a mosin, grabbing a canteen in a gas station, then I was lost. I couldn't see any towns, but I could see a castle in the distance. I decided to climb it to look for my next destination. I took a look around and couldn't see any towns, just a road snaking through the forest. That seems wierd to me now, it must have been black mountain, and I know you can see Krasnostav from there. Anyway, I came down and headed in the direction of the road, running across fields and forests until I found a train track. I followed that for what seemed a long time until I came on a dirt road, and a small unenterable military style outpost, with a broken wall and one of those little guard towers you can't see down. So I followed that road, and sure enough I came upon an airstrip. I checked it out, got a nice backpack, a gas mask and some camo clothing. I think I had been playing for about three hours, and the world was so lonely and desolate I decided to make my way back to the coast if I could and try and meet some-one. I found Rify where I got a med-kit and took some nice screenshots, before heading inland again. I ended up in Berezino, and saw my first player running to the construction site. Once he was inside I made my way over. I circled the building to make sure he hadn't bolted out the other side. I'm sure he heard my footsteps, so I called out to him and waited until I saw him come out with a shovel in his hands. I assured him I was friendly, that I was looking for some-one to show me around. A zombie attacked me from behind, and I shot it point blank with my mosin. Turning back to him I saw him running at me, swinging. "Motherfucker", I thought, and pointed my rifle at him. "click". That bullet I used on the zombie was my last. I pulled my splitting axe and we danced around, drawing blood, and another zombie joined in. My screen was going grey. I thought, "fuck this shit" and sprinted in the other direction, opening my pack and refilling my mosin as I ran. I turned and shot him in the chest. I saw him go down before I passed out and died from blood loss. -

After a woman with an axe snuck up on my while I was looting a northern town, I missed my mosin panic shot and was killed. The two guys I were with had gone upstairs down the street to look for a Mosin spawn. So after listening to the ensuing fight I spawned at Komarovo again and decided to do a quick search for a pack and something to drink before heading back to meet up. While I was searching a house another fresh spawn ran into the house. I said hello, and waited for his reaction. He stayed silent. I asked him how he was going. He sat down on the ground, so I figured he wasn't much of a threat. Then he moved up into a crouch position and flipped me off. I just stared at him for a moment before realising that he was in crouch doing a gesture, so I could get my fists out before he could. I punched him in the head, said "BE POLITE." and punched him a few more times before tearing his shirt into a bandage and going on my way. That was my first and only kill in DayZ. -
I'm more excited about the possibility of new environments that aren't pure pre-fab. If it is just concrete docks and cranes like Berezino, Cherno and Elektro, that's not really exciting and I don't care. If it is more of a varied dock with wooden piers, with some for fishing boats and tugs and another more fenced off area for yachts I would be a bit more excited. More unique locations are something I'd really like to see increase as development continues.

The controller is a limitation. Maybe you could do it, but a lot of stuff would have to be re-mapped to clumsier contextual cues and probably longer interaction lists operated with the d-pad (probably). Would the Real Virtuality engine even be compatible with the PS4? I know it doesn't use the old Cell architecture, so... maybe? Does the PS4 have the same patch implementation/certification costs as the Xbox? If so (and maybe even if not) you're not looking at DayZ on PS4 for at least another two years, if it ever happens at all.

I don't mind if you want to play offline to familiarize yourself with the controls and mechanics, even though you could do that on a zero pop server easy enough, and there are a lot of guides already. However, I don't think development time should be spent implementing human AI. It is more complex and time consuming than the Zombie/Wildlife AI we sorely need.
