  1. I can't think of anything more noobish and dumbed down than sniper rifles. Point, click. That hardly takes any skill. Sneaking up on a guy to get into melee range to kill him is about a million times more "hardcore" than sitting in a bush and playing shooting gallery. If you're too scared of dying to mix it up, you're the one who should be playing Pokemon.
  2. Strangely, I was rewatching LotR recently and noticed this exact scene and thought it perfectly illustrated why not to do it. It's just such a heavy handed effect. I think that shot would have been more effective as a simple long shot that conveyed the impending evil by having everything come to an abrupt stop, the leaves stop moving and the trees become still. That is more scary than a disorienting zoom. This is, of course, my opinion. A lot of directors forget that it is editing that gives meaning, not camera tricks. Lev Kuleshov demonstrated this pretty effectively in the 1920's. http://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kuleshov_Effect#section_1 So whether or not you use shots that some may consider wankery, it's the editing of what images come before and after the shots that give them context and meaning. Keep that in mind and you can get away with some camera trick wankery, just look at Scorsese.

first and last time playing Celle

You are everything that is wrong with DayZ.
  4. The realism argument is not totally bunk. The fact that we have society now is proof that humanity is not a race of psychopaths since there were eras in early human development that were way more harsh than the DayZ world. Anyway, it's a game, so expecting realism is kind of silly. However I do take issue with people who claim that random murder is realistic. It just isn't. People don't work that way. Except for teenage boys playing videogames.
  5. 1) different ranges for direct communication. Like Whisper goes to 10m, Speaking goes to 30m and Yelling goes to 100m. 2) ability to post and leave notes. Could be used for wanted posters, advertising a trading post, no trespassing signs. (in game, not on the map) 3) some form of crafting.

    Did Namalsk get it right?

Has anyone else noticed that every new map seems to push DayZ further and further towards pvp deathmatchdom? Smaller area, more weapons, better weapons. I feel that these maps are not really DayZ. It seems to me that DayZ started with a mature crowd (ArmaII players) who were more patient and less likely to go around murdering each other for the lulz, but as it gained popularity, a younger group started showing up and they lacked the maturity and patience to truly enhabit the DayZ world and have been slowly turning it into a deathmatch game with their in game behaviour and all the new pvp focused maps. I personally do not like the trajectory the mod has been on.
  7. My one suggestion, don't use a dolly zoom (hitchcock zoom). That effect is so artificial and disconcerting that it totally ruins immersion and reminds you you are watching a crafted piece of film. Go totally old school on this and keep the film nerd wankery to a minimum. I'd rather see well constructed static shots than constant camera movement. I'm thinking lots of far shots, making John seem small in the crazy world he inhabits. Maybe come in close for the action, perhaps even go hand held to get that Paul Greengrass action effect, but keep the non action static and lonely. Just a suggestion but please do whatever your artistic vision demands. Good luck.
  8. Not sure what point you are trying to make. You are agreeing with me since the last line of your post, pointing ot that this KOS behaviour is a result of this being a game, is exactly the fucking point I was making. Also, you have confussed psycopaths and sociopaths. So basically you decided to flame me while agreeing with me and then getting the psychopath vs. sociopath thing completely wrong. Seriously dude, learn to read, you little weasel raping fucktard. Can we get some kind of intelligence test you have to take before you post?
  9. Oh sorry, forgot what community I was talking to. Here, this will make you feel better... Hell yeah kos bro! I am freakin hardcore. Gotta be a man to hang out in DayZ son. Go back to Hello Kitty if you can't take it brah. You wussy little carebear. This game is all about the deathmatch bro. Hell yeah, I kill everybody cause I'm so alpha. Like real life bro, I'll end you and your family. Straight up brah. Hardcore! Hardcore! Hardcorrreeeeee!!!!!! Brah.
  10. I believe that posts like this are just cowards trying to defend their banditry as "realistic". There are plenty of places on earth where there essentially is no law and resources are severely limited. And while murder may be more common in these areas, it is nothing at all like the KOS mentallity in a video game. Only a spoiled westerner would even suggest that a video game could in any way simulate that. If this were truly human nature then societies would never have formed in the first place and we would all be living in tribes murdering each other. Early humans were not sophisticated enough to even worry about morality, they grouped together to survive because it is the most advantageous method of survival. Loners and murderers would quickly disappear as the group became larger and more well organized and hunted down those that threaten them. In real life there are no respawns and it wouldn't take long for all the psycopaths to be dealt with. The problem with DayZ is that these people get to respawn and keep up their KOS ways, effectively making it impossible to remove their sub-human tendencies from the genepool, as would happen in reality. TLDR: The fact that we live in societies now is proof that the KOS mentality is an aberration and has nothing to do with reality.

    Endgame content in Standalone

Toe the line Inception! You must have the same opinion as everyone else or you shall be ostracized and forced to cross out your post and beg for forgiveness from the self appointed guardians of DayZ! Nevermind, I see you've done it already. Good boy.

    Calling "friendly!" in towns

They use carebear cause they saw it on the forums and they think using it makes them hardcore. Leave the children alone and let them have their fun. Don't you listen to this guy you teenage badasses, keep calling everyone carebears and dream of the day you don't have to do what mommy says anymore.

    Do you trust Rocket's vision?

I get that. I was just pointing out that if it wasn't fun, no one would play it. I think there are some who want DayZ to be a griefer's paradise. Maybe that's Rocket's vision and maybe that will be fun to some people. I wonder how well a game designed for sociopaths who enjoy other people's misery would sell? Maybe Rocket has discovered an untapped market, the sociopath market.

    Do you trust Rocket's vision?

So you want the game to be not fun? There are plenty of not fun games, like "Poke Yourself in the Dick with a Switchblade." That game is mega hardcore but no one really plays it. Is that what you want for DayZ?

    Do you trust Rocket's vision?

Absolutely. No worries. I was a bit sarcastic at first, so I probably deserved it. My point is that the focus should be on the quality of the experience, not some impossible goal like realism. So yeah, we do agree for the most part although I would endorse wholly unrealistic features if it made the game more fun or more engrossing. I don't think everyone shares that opinion as it seems to me that some people do not want the game to be more fun. Often these people use realism as their excuse, so I may have unfairly lumped you in with them. Cheers.

    Do you trust Rocket's vision?

Interesting post until you had to start calling names. (It's the internet, so I should expect it.) And I wasn't trying to flame, I was makig the point that the term realism in a video game is pretty meaningless. If you had said "immersive" I would have understood. I believe that is more what you are talkig about. "Realism" is impossible, immersion is not, and some of the features which would enhance immersion are inherently unrealistic. This is what I was wanting to point out. Anyone using the word realism to describe a videogame just doesn't get it or hasn't thought it through. Screw realism, give us more immersion.

Don't listen to the casual gamers

So what is the definition of a "hardcore" player? I know for a fact that many of the people who consider themselves hardcore were the AS50 duping Cherno deathmatchers, and that seems to be exactly not what I would consider "hardcore."
  18. Bongofish

    Do you trust Rocket's vision?

You did it wrong. Repeat after me: Carebear, carebear, carebear, carebear, carebear, carebear, carebear, carebear, carebear. Now you are e-hung!
  19. Bongofish

    Do you trust Rocket's vision?

So I assume that once you die you will never play the game again? Cause nothing is more unrealistic than respawning after you are killed. Also, I assume that you don't use team speak and that you never log out, choosing instead to let your character idle somewhere for 8 hours to simulate sleep. Oh wait, yes you do and yes you will, because it is a GAME. There is no realism, just features, and these features make the game either more or less enjoyable to play.

    Do you trust Rocket's vision?

Everytime you use the term Carebear your e-peen grows by an inch and you win 20 internet badass points. Way to go!

    Do you trust Rocket's vision?

Is that seriously a considered feature? There are so many bigger issues that need to be addressed before he creates Shit Simulator 2013, like giving us a reason to keep playing beyond killing each other. Which, as the player numbers will attest, gets boring really fast.

What Does DayZ Mean To You? (PvP or Survival)

What I want out of DayZ is a unique experience, a place to have interactions with other players that would not occur in other games. KOS ruins this and I don't understand why those people don't play other shooters. I think it's because in those other shooters everyone is on a more or less even playing field and when they don't have an advantage, they don't do so well.

    Do you trust Rocket's vision?

I get nervous when he uses bullshit terms like "anti-game.". That is a meaningless buzzword that brings to mind ignorant people in business meetigs throwing around "synergy" and "dynamics" or whatever the buzzword of the week is. Truth is, it's a sandbox game, although it isn't even much of a sandbox right now due to the lack of features. Private hives are exploding because people want some structure, some purpose. Heaven forbid, it's like they want to play a computer GAME. He's made a great skeleton for a game, now he needs to flesh it out. I think if he gets over the "I'm making something that's never been done, an anti-game!" bullshit (you guys swinging from his nuts and parroting this bullshit are not helping) and realizes that people play to have fun, then he could end up making a unique and fun game. If he insists on portraying it as something deeper than that, then he'll totally miss the opportunity to create something that can endure. Ultimately it is his and he can do whatever he wants, but I'd like to see making the game more enjoyable and more social be a priority. Ps - I am not saying easier, just more enjoyable. For instance, I'd like to see a bounty system implemented, and a system to encourage kidnapping and robbery over murder, and something to help organize the building of groups and then encourage these groups to fight over resources. I would say that the emergence of all the private hives backs this point up.
  24. This whole post is dripping with lame. Yawn.
