How to make death actually matter more

Why not just prevent you from looting your own corpse?
  2. Soda really should be rarer.

I hadn't even thought of amputees, but that would be pretty cool. Hell, I don't care if people would totally troll and try to make themselves into quadruple amputees. In all seriousness, I'm thinking fingers.

    Encouraging Cooperation Among Players

The warehouse example can defintely go very, very wrong. That's why players should have alternatives, if they're true to life. I would hate to see those areas or items implemented only to encourage teamwork; ie a warehouse door or an inaccessible area atop a ledge. However, if I was able to find an object to climb atop, that would be true to life. As for the warehouse scenario; perhaps there's a switch I can activate, or a window I can shatter to climb in, or my car can be used as a battering ram. Sure, it'd be easier to find a friend to help you quietly lift the door, but as a lone wolf you relish the challenge, and will surely find a way to surmount most obstacles without one. Let's not forget that sometimes, no alternatives exist to teamwork. For example; certain medical situations. First aid should be ruthless. People would be able to treat themselves, but only to a certain extent, as in life. For example, if I'm shot in the shoulder, I'd be able to apply immediate first aid, disinfect the wound, etc etc, perhaps even remove the bullet (stuff someone else could do to me). ie, I'd be fine, but I'd definitely have a few lasting wounds that would heal over time. The challenge begins when it comes to blood transfusions. They would be trickier, and riskier, for the lone wolf, but not impossible.

Gun reliability to be a factor

I hope they provide players with NATO weapons (a rarity, hopefully), but integrate weapon durability in such a way that will reflect the toughness of the AK47. Less experienced survivors would probably opt for the AK, whereas highly militarized groups would surely stockpile on NATO weaponry. I think.

Not if they're forced, ie, not true to life. But if they change aspects of the game such as the featherweight vehicle parts, that would be nice. Mechanics along the lines of squad perks in Battlefield 3 would be overkill. Giving players instances were teamwork is essential would be nice. On the fllipside, people should be able to creatively solve problems in some situations. For example; if I can't climb a fence without someone giving me a boost (a feature I'd like to see), I can always cut through it if it's a wire fence, or plow through it with a car.

Personal transfusion kits could be crafted in hospitals, using certain materials, but have a slight chance of going seriously wrong. :P Again; in real life, it's more difficult to recover from serious injuries when alone than with people who can give you medical attention.

I don't see how this forces players to play with a team. The advantage of being a lone wolf usually boils down to stealth. Lone wolves sometimes exceed in this, and they're aided by the fact that they travel alone, and are thus generally harder to spot. If I want a helicopter and I'm a lone wolf, then I'd damn better find a creative way of obtaining one, because there's no way I'm going to be able to lift a main rotor assembly on my own. Will I momentarily befriend someone and have him help me in exchange for a ride? Will I disarm a survivor and force him to help me? Will I stalk and kill people who are trying to fix a helicopter, after they've repaired it? Lone wolves are not exempt from character interaction. If you want to accomplish certain things in DayZ, as you would in real life, you'll have to sometimes interact with other players; whether it be in a friendly manner or not, that's for the lone wolf to decide.

There's always a way around a fix, but it's a damn hassle and could lead to their untimely deaths. :P

How to make death actually matter more

Does it really matter if teams can bypass the restriction? In real life, a group could loot their dead friends' corpse, and give that gear to a new posse member. While I understand that in DayZ they'll have conveniently found a ''new'' posse member within the time it takes for them to meet up again, the fact still remains that the group would have the advantage of conserving their dead mates' gear in real life. Oftentimes, teams are in a dangerous situation when another team member dies. What often happens is they guard the corpse for the deceased to loot, as opposed to carrying all of their gear, which is often impossible. In most situations it'd be an additional hassle for teammates to let their guard down in order to split up their fallen comrades' gear, as opposed to just guarding it. Hopefully, damage to gear will remedy most of these situations.

It's not forcing lone wolves to play with a team. It's forcing them to adapt, like they would if an apocalypse ever occurred This game is meant to be authentic; you should have more advantages to playing with a team, as you should have certain disadvantages. Carrying a main rotor assembly shouldn't be a one-man task.

    Clever animals

I just hope there are less vagrant farm animals, and wild animals that flee to the sound of your mad sprint through the woods. When a survivor goes hunting, he should be sneaky. If I'm madly sprinting through the woods, I should never even see an animal unless I happen to spot one far, far away.

How to make death actually matter more

Being dead tends to do that. I hope, at the very least, a timer of five minutes or so is implemented. Spawn suicides would be reduced (Why would you kill yourself if there's a good chance you'll spawn in the same area again?) and people wouldn't have time to run back to a firefight on the coast. Other ways to make people more attached to their character would be character creation every time you spawn, and other incentives to not getting your ass shot other than ''I'll lose all my gear.'' If I'm told to drop all of my weapons and equipment at gunpoint, I'll probably try killing my captors and die, if only out of spite. But if I've held on to this character for days, and had the scars to prove it, I would think twice, if only out of emotional attachment. Scars, scratches, beards and tattoos (the latter is optional, and beards can be shaved) that you acquire over time would make you really love your character. Imagine befriending another survivor, while you're busy camping a roof in Elektro, you take a moment to share stories of battles fought and won, while removing your hoodie to show them the goddamn scars. Gunshot, claw marks, you name it. ie, there need to be more things that can only be reclaimed by death.

    Run slower without shoes on.

Could be only applied in the woods. But as I said, cutting yourself would mostly occur in urban environments. But, to be fair, sometimes there are sharp rocks and other hazardous things hiding in the grass. :P The idea of having visible hazards did cross my mind, but usually when games implement this they're pretty obvious. It really would detract from the despair of that situation-- wouldn't a post-apocalyptic city be completely littered in sharp rocks, glass, etc? Having random piles of glass here and there are usually very obvious, and easily avoidable. In reality, many people would cut themselves despite their best efforts not to. But hey, if they made the glass shards very subtle and not all in the same generic pile, that'd be great!

    Run slower without shoes on.

Running barefoot could; 1) Slightly decrease running speed when unburdened, and noticeably decrease speed when carrying a significant amount of weight. 2) Footsteps would be much quieter, particularly on concrete and metal. 3) While running there could be a randomized "stumbling" animation and your character would yelp in pain simultaneously. You wouldn't notice anything beyond that, other than the occasional groan of pain from your survivor. If untreated (ie, basic disinfecting and bandaging of cut), your character would become infected and require antibiotics. Over time, if simply ignored, this would be debilitating or even fatal. The chances of being cut and the chances of being infected by the cut would be significantly increased in urban environments. So for your woodland warrior, running barefoot could be an option-- but if you're robbed of your boots in Chernogorsk you should feel the despair of your situation. Shards of glass and other such debris would litter the streets, and you could easily cut yourself on something you can barely even see. 4) Let's not forget cold feet.
  16. I was in DayZ 2017. Nighttime. In my possession was a Lee Enfield and a Makarov-- a combination which made me a force to be reckoned with. I was making my way through Elektro, bound northward, when outside the church I heard gunshots near the school house, and the sky was lit up with flares. I immediately went prone, and as I was crawling towards the church two survivors came running towards me, with nothing but hatchets. I crouched and ordered them inside the church. Upon interrogating them, I found out that a huge brawl was going on at the school house. Hatchets, crowbars, pistols shotguns and even a Lee Enfield were in the fray, I was told-- so I chose to stay away. I ushered my hostages to the altar, when a third came inside. I sent him with the others, and had them face away from me. Bullets were scarce; I took out my Makarov, but they still didn't sense what was going on. One of them peaked over his shoulder and asked if I was going to kill him. For some reason, I said no. Instead, I asked them if they wanted to join me. We'd head west, I told them, into Chernogorsk. They all agreed, and I gave my Makarov to one of them. They were loyal to me; it's amazing at which point DayZ can be a social experiment. I held their lives in my hands, I had the biggest gun, so I was the leader-- even when they all found Winchesters and Lee Enfields. 'Twas the first time I spared the lives of survivors like that. And then we killed a bunch of innocent survivors. Still, closest I've come to being a hero!

    Melee system

Exactly. If I have a hatchet, and successfully sneak up on someone, I should be able to kill him without him turning around and blowing my head off after the first strike. Observational science has shown that a hatchet to the head does indeed kill!

    Melee system

Hopefully guns and ammunition will be scarce enough so that melee will occur regularly.

    The Brave Justiciars

In the early days of the Justiciars, we played on a server which didn't allow killing on sight (KoS). We took it upon ourselves to hunt down bandit clans-- to little success. We had just stumbled upon the leader of a notorious bandit-clan. Hilarity ensued. Expect a lot of panicking, screaming and begging for our lives. After the final SUV flip, I returned to the scene of the firefight and was shot in the head by their leader, who had made his way unarmed to find me. He'd snuck around me, managed to get to my truck, took the shotgun we stole from him out of the trunk and killed me with it (My gun was much bigger, but his cojones prevailed). Definitely the toughest bastard we ever met. I like to think he yelled, "THIS IS MY... BOOMSTICK!" before turning my head into something akin to canned muffins.

    Knocking people out.

I hope they implement tranquilizer guns at some point. Imagine looting a city, and you stumble across another survivor. Incredulous, you both stare at each-other for a few seconds, not quite knowing what to do. A gunshot means certain death-- zombies being an actual threat. Luckily, you have a tranquilizer gun, so you put him down and get the hell out (or slit his throat.) Silenced weapons will hopefully be rare enough that people will opt for the tranquilizer gun when they find one.
